FG restores Power to Northern Nigeria after days of blackout

by Folarin Kehinde October 31, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Government has fulfilled its promise to restore power to the northern part of the country that has been in darkness for more than 10 days.

Special Adviser, Strategic Communication and Media Relations to the Honourable Minister of Power, Bolaji Tunji made this known in a press statement on Wednesday.

Tunji stated that restoration was achieved on Wednesday, October 30 as bulk power supply was restored through the 330kV Ugwuaji-Apir transmission line 1 as of 4:56pm, following the completion of repairs on the vandalized section of the line and in line with the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu’s promise that power would be restored within three days.

He gave the promise on Tuesday while speaking with the Senate Committee on Power.

The blackout which affected 17 States occurred when vandals damaged the Shiroro-Kaduna transmission line, which is the main power supply line to the north.

With the restoration of this line, the Apir-Lafia 330kV transmission line 2 is now operational, while bulk power transmission has been restored to Lafia, Makurdi, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Bauchi, and Gombe States.

The engineering team will also continue restoration work on the affected sections of the vandalized 330kV transmission line two. All necessary materials for the repairs are on hand, while work will begin as soon as the site is secured for the safety of personnel.

In the meantime, teams of linesmen will re-patrol the 330kV line 2 to ensure that no other sections are impacted as the repair works progress.

Addressing the Senate, the Minister said to prevent repeat of the recent incident, urgent measures must be taken to secure the nation’s assets from being vandalized by bandits and terrorists.

He had also informed the lawmakers that the ministry was working in collaboration with the National Security Adviser (NSA) and other security agencies to ensure that normalcy was restored.

“What we are witnessing, particularly with regard to the power situation in the north is unfortunate but worrisome. I also want to inform you that it is far from grid collapse but purely sabotage and vandalism. The transmission line that takes power to the north was destroyed by bandits and terrorists and what can we do about that? It has happened before. This same line that transmits power from Shiroro to Mando and Kaduna was vandalized and we fixed it without anybody knowing about it. But this time around, it is extremely bad. The bandits also threatened our contractors, who were to fix the vandalized line and that is why we sought the help of the NSA and other security agencies to get the line restored”, he said.

“We have explored an alternative route, which is the Bauchi route though that one also was vandalised anyway but that is easier for us to deal with and that is why we can say that in two to three days, there will be electricity supply to the north”.

FG reveals timeline to restore electricity in Northern Nigeria

by Folarin Kehinde October 29, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Government has said within five days, electricity will be restored to the 17 northern states that have suffered blackout due vandalisation of the Shiroro-Kaduna transmission line.

Adebayo Adelabu, Minister of Power, said this while briefing State House correspondents after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja, on Monday.

He said the disruption of electricity supply to the northern part of the country was due to vandalisation of Shiroro-Kaduna transmission line, the major line that supplied electricity to the north.

He, however, said the transmission line would be repaired within three to five days.

Mr President has instructed the National Security Adviser (NSA), the chief of defense staff, the chief of Army staff, Chief of Air Staff, to provide the required security for the people that will fix the demolished line.”

“With the provision of full security, the TCN staff will have the confidence, together with the contractors, to go to the field and fix it.

So, I’m just appealing to our northern brothers and sisters, fathers and mothers, to bear with us that very soon, light will be restored, and we must all collectively protect our national grid to avoid further vandalisation,” said the minister.

He added that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) had earlier given approval for the ministry of power to upgrade the Shiroro-Kaduna transmission line, one of the oldest transmission lines in Nigeria.

He said once the upgrade was done, the north would enjoy more stable electricity than what was being experienced now.

He promised to convene a meeting with the chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), and all the Distribution Companies (DISCOs) to ensure that customers in the north were not billed during the period they suffered blackout.

Adelabu explained that the national grid collapsed twice in recent times due to explosion of the transformer at Jeba plant.

He said before the explosion, the last disturbance on the grid was about four months ago.

“Let me tell you the truth of the matter is we have old infrastructure. We have a national grid that is more than 50 years old.

“We have national grid whose transmission lines are weak, the towers are falling, and the substations, the transformers are old.

“We have national grid whose transmission lines are weak, the towers are falling, and the substations, the transformers are old.

“In fact, the transformer that actually exploded in Jeba was 47 years old. We’ve been trying to revamp this, to change them, but they cannot all be changed overnight,” he said.

He said the ministry would continue to manage the grid to prevent frequent disturbances, until it was completely overhauled.

BREAKING: FG Drops All Charges Against Binance Executive Gambaryan

by Folarin Kehinde October 23, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The federal government has dropped all charges against Tigran Gambaryan, a Binance Holdings executive who has been detained since April and facing trial for money laundering.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) announced the withdrawal of charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday morning.

It should be recalled that the judge, Emeka Nwite, had previously denied Gambaryan bail twice, citing flight risk concerns.

Gambaryan’s health had reportedly deteriorated during detention, with prison officials describing him as “very sick”.

Gambaryan, a United States citizen and former IRS agent, was arrested in February while visiting Nigeria to address regulatory concerns about Binance. He was accused of money laundering and operating an unlicensed financial institution.

The prosecution’s lawyer stated that Gambaryan was merely an employee of Binance, not involved in the company’s broader financial decisions.

Mark Mordi, Gambaryan’s defence lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria agreed with the prosecution’s assessment.

It is understood that there were intense diplomatic efforts between Nigerian and US government officials to secure Gambaryan’s release.

US lawmakers had campaigned for Gambaryan’s release, writing to relevant authorities to intervene.

BREAKING: FG reacts to CNG car explosion in Edo state

by Folarin Kehinde October 18, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The federal government has finally reacted to the recent CNG-powered vehicle explosion at the NIPCO filling station in Aduwawa, Benin, Edo State.

Speaking on TVC this afternoon, the Director General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Joseph Osanipin, urged Nigerians to prioritize safety when converting their vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

The explosion, which occurred on Wednesday, left three individuals severely injured, including a motorist who suffered significant eye injuries.

According to a filling station attendant, a woman was critically injured with her stomach ripped open, while another person had to undergo a foot amputation due to the blast.

All injured parties are currently receiving treatment at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).

The incident was traced back to a cylinder that had been improperly fabricated by a welder lacking the necessary approvals.

Osanipin reiterated the importance of using only accredited CNG conversion centers to ensure the safety of both vehicles and their occupants.

“If you want to convert your vehicle, go to accredited CNG conversion centres to ensure safety; don’t go to roadside mechanics,” he advised.

He pointed out the government’s efforts, noting that six agencies are currently working on the Presidential CNG Initiative to bolster safety measures and expand the service network for CNG-powered vehicles.

Osanipin urged all Nigerians to remain vigilant and informed about the risks associated with unregulated CNG conversions, stressing that safety must always come first.

FG to Tackle Poverty, Plans Cash Transfers for 20 Million Poor Nigerians

by Folarin Kehinde October 16, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Government has unveiled a comprehensive plan to provide cash transfers to 20 million poor Nigerians in a move to address poverty and improve living standards.

According to Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, the social investment program aims to impact 60% of the poorest citizens, directly supporting 20 million households.

He made the disclosure at a panel session titled ‘Fiscal Reforms for a More Secure Future’ during the 30th Nigeria Economic Summit in Abuja on Tuesday.

He said the government’s economic reform agenda focuses on reducing inflation, creating jobs, and stimulating growth in key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, oil, and housing.

Edun attributed the increased revenue to the effective application of technology, which has reformed the civil service and improved domestic resource mobilization.

He said, “In terms of revenue, the number one place to look was inwards, domestic resource mobilisation. That’s where the government started. By the first half of this year, revenue had doubled.

“Aggregate government revenue was more than doubled. And that was achieved by applying technology very robustly.

“We have applied technology in a way that essentially reforms the civil service. Rather than waiting for compliance from government ministries, departments and agencies and government companies, we looked at what the rules and regulations were, how much a company was allowed to spend on its revenue, and then how much of its surplus it had to provide to government.

“The social investment programme is spearheaded by direct transfers to reach 60 per cent poorest in the population. And right now, 20 million households are being supported directly. And it’s going to rise to, well, 20 million people, four million households so far, and it will rise to 15 million households who will be paid directly by the government.

“That is how President Tinubu’s government is spending the money which is being yielded from better oil production.”

Edun also revealed that the government is focused on agriculture, manufacturing, oil, and housing as vital drivers of the country’s economy.

“We are looking to food production to help bring down inflation,” he explained.

“We aim to make food more available, affordable, and to reduce the cost of living for Nigerians.”

‘It is now compulsory, All Students Must Graduate with 2 skills” FG

by Folarin Kehinde October 11, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The federal government said with the new curriculum set to roll out for Basic and Senior Secondary Education in Nigeria, every student must graduate with at least two skills.

The Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman who stated this said the new curriculum is designed to incorporate knowledge, skills and values at Basic and Senior Secondary Education levels.

He stated this at the 68th National Council on Education (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Thursday, with the theme, “Innovation, Digital Technology Entrepreneurship: Tools for Educational and National Development in the 21st Century. “

He said the new curriculum is designed to incorporate knowledge, skills and values, especially with a special focus on skills, so that students, when they graduate, will have skills that they can connect with the economy and have a productive life.

He explained that today, they share a common challenge that the country’s educational curriculum is all in danger of becoming obsolete as technology is disrupting every industry, including education.

“A well-designed and effective curriculum determines a sustainable development, quality, and the relevance of education. This is the main reason why this administration places priority on the institutionalisation of curriculum development in the overall context of education,” he said.

The ministry, according to him, is implementing the Education Transformation Agenda of Mr. President designed to comprehensively overhaul the education sector to ensure quality learning, skill development, access and equity.

Prof Mamman reaffirmed that government has the primary responsibility of protecting and ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education at all levels for all learners.

“The government therefore, is committed to observing all relevant international protocols, conventions and treaties for the protection of our learners, teachers, learning institutions and facilities from attack and any other instrument on education, which the country has domesticated. “

Earlier, in his welcome address, the Minister of State for Education, Dr Tanko Sununu said any nation that is desirous of growth must in essence embrace the new culture of creative ideas, entrepreneurship and the use of digital technology.

He said: “To meet the challenges posed by new technological development, we must ensure that the educational system is structured and made more relevant to the needs and aspirations of the society.”

Sununu noted that new and relevant ideas must be injected into the system to enhance national development, adding that education at all levels needs renewal in order to meet up with the present globalisation.

Also, the Chairman Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund, Muntari Mohammed said digital literacy must be a fundamental component of the curriculum, adding that their leadership remains focused to ensure stability in the education sector.

We’re not responsible for petrol price hike – FG

by Folarin Kehinde October 10, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Government has said it is not responsible for the hike in the pump price of petrol.

On Wednesday, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) raised the pump price of fuel from N897 per litre to N1, 030 in Abuja; from N855 to N998 in Lagos; N1, 070 in North-East; N1,025 in other South-West states; N1,045 in South-East and N1,075 in South-South.

This had triggered reactions among Nigerians who asked President Bola Tinubu to work towards reversing the increment.

But in a chat with Daily Trust, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the government should not be held responsible for the latest hike in petrol price.

The minister explained that the NNPCL made the decision in response to prevailing circumstances in the energy industry, emphasising that it did not act on any instruction from the federal government, as the government can no longer fix prices of petroleum products, in line with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).

He said with the subsidy regime ending since May 2023, the NNPCL had only been paying differential to keep the price within the range it had been, but the company said it could no longer absorb the losses.

“The differential you’re seeing is a result of different factors. One of them is the crisis in the Middle East. There’s volatility in the market. Therefore, the prices of petroleum products are going up, consistent with what is happening with other operators in the industry globally.

Secondly, NNPC cannot continue to absorb these losses for Nigeria because as a limited liability company, it would be operating at a loss,” he said.

The minister urged Nigerians to continue to show understanding with the NNPCL and the government, assuring that in the long run the prices would ultimately come down.

FG increases cost of number plates, driver’s license

by Folarin Kehinde October 9, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Amid the economic hardship in Nigeria, the Joint Tax Board (JTB) has announced revised rates for national driver’s licenses and vehicle number plates, set to take effect from November 1, 2024.

Under the new pricing structure, Nigerians will now pay N15,000 for a three-year motor vehicle driver’s license, while a five-year license will cost N21,000.

Motorcycle and tricycle operators will also experience a price hike, with the three-year license now set at N7,000 and the five-year option at N11,000.

In addition to the driver’s license rate adjustments, the cost of vehicle number plates has seen a considerable increase.

Standard private and commercial vehicle number plates will now be priced at a minimum of N30,000. Fancy number plates, often used for personalized identification, will be sold at N400,000, while motorcycle number plates will cost N12,000.

Dealer motor vehicle number plates have been set at N100,000. Government vehicle number plates have also been affected by the revision.

The government fancy motor vehicle number plate will now cost N120,000, while the standard plate will be N80,000. For motorcycles, the government fancy number plate is priced at N50,000, and the standard number plate is at N20,000.

According to the JTB, the new rates will support the implementation of enhanced security features aimed at improving the identification processes for both drivers and vehicles across Nigeria.

Olusegun Adesokan, Secretary of the JTB, emphasized the importance of public awareness and education concerning these changes.

He said in a circular: “The secretariat has requested that the FRSC notify the JTB of its public engagement and sensitization plans.

“This is to enable relevant inputs where necessary, as we are confident that a very robust engagement arrangement will ensure the seamless implementation of the revised rates as approved by the board.”

FG denies approving Dangote Refinery as sole supplier of Aviation Fuel

by Folarin Kehinde October 9, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Management, Festus Keyamo has denied saying that the federal government approved the Dangote Petroleum Refinery Company as the sole supplier of Jet A1 fuel to domestic airlines.

The minister made the clarification in response to reports quoting him as saying that the government approved the 650,000 barrels per day refinery as the only approved refinery for the job.

Keyamo appeared on Channels TV interview, which aired on Tuesday, where he said “The airline operators just met recently. With my blessing, it’s a decision from the airline operators in Nigeria that they should only buy from Dangote refinery Jet A1.

“You can see that yesterday we started naira-for-crude purchase with Dangote. It’s all Naira, no Dollar component.”

He also said sourcing petrol from Dangote would shield airline operators from the impact of crude oil price fluctuations.

But in a tweet seen by THE WHISTLER, the aviation boss clarified that the decision was not made by the federal government.

According to him, the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) made the decision and not the federal government.

He clarified, “This is a misrepresentation of what I said. The correct position is that the Airline Operators of Nigeria voluntarily decided they would patronise Dangote Refinery in their purchase of JET A1 Fuel.

“Not that the federal government approves Dangote Refinery as sole supplier. that is not correct.”

Nigeria @64: FG plans low-key celebration as Nigerian youths protest against hunger

by Folarin Kehinde September 30, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

While the Federal Government is planning a low-key Independence Day anniversary celebration, the EndBadGovernance protest organizers have also concluded plans to stage protests across the country.

Leading reporters reports that for the second time after President Bola Tinubu took over the leadership mantle in 2023, the FG on Thursday, September 26 announced that the October 1 Independence Day would be on a low key basis due to the mood of the nation.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator George Akume told newsmen that President Tinubu’s government was aware of and sympathized with all Nigerians over the economic conditions they were passing through, hence the treason for a low-key celebration.

However, some activists clamouring to end bad governance in Nigeria are seeing the event as a fertile ground to continue their protest against the high cost of living and other lingering challenges bedeviling the nation.

Economic hardship

For most Nigerians, the economic situation of the country has aggravated to an unbearable stage.

Leading reporters reports that currently, there is no end in sight to the untoward hardship imposed on Nigerians from May 2023 after President Bola Tinubu announced the removal of fuel subsidy.

On Friday, September 27, the National Bureau of Statistics revealed that the prices of Beans, Rice, Bread, Egg have continued to rise across the country.

NBS, in its data, indicated that one Kilogram of Beans rose by 271.55 percent on a year-on-year basis to N2,574.63 in August 2024 from N692.95 recorded the same period last year.

Also on a month-on-month basis, the price of Beans increased to 5.31 percent to N2,444.81 in July 2024.

According to NBS, the average price of 1kg Local rice sold loose went up by 148.41 percent from N 737.11 in August 2023 to N1,831.05 in August 2024, while there was an increase of 3.65 percent on a month-on-month basis.

It also stated that the price of medium size eggs (12 pieces) experienced significant price increases by N121.92 percent from N1,031.55 in August of last year to N2,289.19 in August 2024.

Our correspondent gathered on Saturday that the price of a 50kg bag of rice has jerked up to about N100,000.
