Nigeria records fresh COVID case

by Folarin Kehinde April 21, 2026
written by Folarin Kehinde

A fresh case of COVID-19 has been recorded in Nigeria.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the case was recorded in Cross River State.

Speaking at a news conference in Calabar, on Tuesday, Dr Henry Ayuk, the state’s Commissioner for Health, said the case involved a Chinese national, who worked with Lafarge and flew into the country on March 17, before taking ill.

The commissioner stated that the Chinese’ case became worse at the medical facility of his office and had to be taken to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).

He explained that at the UCTH, his samples were taken and all protocols followed; it was subsequently confirmed that he had symptoms of COVID-19.

“We are, however, happy to report that he is doing well,” the commissioner said.

Ayuk asserted that the ministry of health had, however, been repositioned by the current administration, to handle and manage any situation – diseases or epidemic outbreaks.

According to him, unfortunately, there have been silent infections and clear cases from time to time.

“But we are determined that for every ailment, every disease or outbreak, if it is identified here in the state, there should be no alarm.

“The state will do well in terms of surveillance or containment of an outbreak. Whatever it is, we will do our best to contain it. So, there is no alarm.

“When this case was reported in about three or four days ago, we decided to be careful to confirm and ensure that the processes involved with identifying and confirming every case of COVID-19, are duly followed.

“The protocols have been followed and confirmed that a 53-year-old Chinese who work in Akamkpa Local Government Area of the state has COVID-19,” he said.

On her part, Dr Inyang Ekpenyong, State Epidemiologist, announced that in response to the case, the state emergency response unit had been activated.

She, however, noted that there was currently an ongoing contact tracing and line listing of those the Chinese may have been in contact with.

While noting the last case of confirmed case of COVID-19 in Cross River to be in 2022, the epidemiologist, however, feared that the Chinese may have contacted the virus here in Nigeria.

“The incubation period for this virus is usually between two to 14 days, but the Chinese flew into Nigeria from China on March 17 and started developing the symptoms on April.

“This is well beyond the 14 days incubation period. Like I said, we are doing the line listing of those he may have come in contact with, as part of our containment efforts.

“We have also activated the emergency response center and deployed rapid response teams to Akamkpa, where the victim works.

“There is no way we can stop this disease, but we can stop the disease outbreak.

“It will be wrong not to contain or manage it by ensuring that people do not die,” she stated.

Resident doctors shut down hospitals nationwide

by Folarin Kehinde September 12, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has directed its members to withdraw services from public hospitals nationwide from Friday.

The action followed the expiration of a 24-hour ultimatum issued to the Federal Government to meet its outstanding demands. The ultimatum came after an earlier 10-day deadline, which lapsed on 10 September, without resolution.

On 1 September, NARD had warned it would embark on an indefinite strike if the government failed to address the issues within 10 days.

Resident doctors, who constitute the majority of the medical workforce in teaching and specialist hospitals, have repeatedly gone on strike in recent years over unpaid wages, poor welfare, and inadequate working conditions.

Daily Trust on Thursday that the fresh ultimatum was the outcome of a six-hour virtual meeting of the association’s National Executive Council (NEC) held on Wednesday.

Daily Trust reports that the doctors are demanding immediate payment of the outstanding 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund, settlement of five months’ arrears from the 25–35 per cent Consolidated Medical Salary Structure review, and other long-standing salary backlogs.

Others are the payment of the 2024 accoutrement allowance arrears, prompt disbursement of specialist allowances, and restoration of the recognition of the West African postgraduate membership certificates.

Nurses deny FG’s Claim, Insist Strike Continues

by Folarin Kehinde August 1, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) says its industrial action is still ongoing.

The Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, had announced that the association has called off its warning strike.

Speaking with journalists after a closed-door meeting in Abuja on Friday, Pate said the decision followed agreements reached between the government and the association’s leadership.

But when contacted, the association’s National Chairman, Morakinyo Rilwan, said it wasn’t true the strike had been called off.

“If it was the Minister who organized the strike, then he could call it off. As far as I’m concerned, the strike organized by the association is still ongoing. The Minister didn’t organize the strike, so he doesn’t have the authority to call it off.

“There are procedures to follow, if it is to be called off at all,” Rilwan told Daily Trust via telephone.

The union has scheduled a general congress for Saturday, where members are expected to deliberate on the outcome of the meeting with government and determine the next course of action.

On Wednesday, the nurses began a seven-day nationwide warning strike. The strike, according to NANNM’s leadership, addresses issues including poor remuneration, staff shortages, unpaid allowances, and unsafe working conditions.

This strike comes amid an existing face-off between doctors and the government over welfare and other issues, as reported by Daily Trust. The nurses’ strike, which followed the expiration of a 15-day ultimatum issued by NANNM to the federal government, has disrupted healthcare services across Nigeria.

Health Ministry Warns Against Salt Misinformation, Counters Pastor Oyakhilome’s Claims

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 8, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has cautioned Nigerians against misinformation on salt consumption following a viral video in which Pastor Chris Oyakhilome urged the public to ignore medical advice on the matter.

In a statement released on Wednesday and signed by the Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, Alaba Balogun, the Ministry emphasized the dangers of excessive salt intake and the importance of evidence-based health guidance.

While acknowledging the influential role of religious leaders, the Ministry warned that misinformation could jeopardize public health. It stressed that sodium, though essential for nerve function, muscle movement, and fluid balance, can lead to serious health issues when consumed in excess.

“Excessive salt intake increases the risk of non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, stroke, heart failure, and kidney disease,” the statement read.

Citing recommendations from the World Health Organization and Nigerian health authorities, the Ministry noted that daily salt consumption should not exceed 5 grams (about one teaspoon). However, research indicates that the average Nigerian consumes more than twice this amount, contributing to thousands of avoidable deaths each year.

To address this issue, the Ministry said it is implementing a National Sodium Reduction Strategy, which includes new national guidelines aimed at lowering sodium levels across all food categories. These range from packaged foods to meals prepared at home, in restaurants, and by street vendors.

The initiative seeks collaboration with food manufacturers, regulatory agencies, and the public to reduce sodium consumption without sacrificing taste or nutrition.

The Ministry also stressed the compatibility of science and faith in promoting public health. “Both can work hand in hand to promote health and well-being,” it stated, urging Nigerians to rely on licensed healthcare professionals for medical advice.

It reaffirmed its commitment to science-driven policy and constructive engagement with all sectors of society, including religious groups, to achieve national health objectives.

FCT declares Free Health Insurance, C-Section Services for Pregnant Women

by Folarin Kehinde April 7, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) administration has declared a free health insurance scheme and caesarean section for all pregnant women living in the area.

The FCTA’s Mandate Secretary for Health, Adedolapo Fasewa, disclosed this on Monday while commemorating the 2025 World Health Day at the Gwarimpa District Hospital, Abuja.

Fasewa explained that for pregnant women to benefit from the free cesarean section, they have to register with the FCT Health Insurance Scheme (FHIS), adding that the scheme also comes with infant care after delivery.

Furthermore, she stated that Nigeria records the highest rate of maternal mortality in the sub-Saharan region.

But Fasewa said the present administration frowns at it and is already taking necessary steps to ensure the reduction as well as infant survival,

She urged all women to register for the free health insurance scheme, saying the fight against maternal mortality is not just for the Federal Government alone but requires collaborative efforts.

FG Approves N4.8bn for HIV Treatment Following U.S. Aid Suspension

by Folarin Kehinde February 3, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a N4.8 billion funding package to sustain HIV treatment programs across Nigeria.

Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare Muhammad Ali Pate made the announcement on Monday, following an FEC meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The approved funds will cover the procurement of 150,000 treatment packs for HIV patients over the next four months. This move, according to Pate, reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding the health of vulnerable populations, despite the challenges posed by shifting international support.

“The Presidential Treatment Programme for HIV patients has been approved, with a total of N4.8 billion allocated for the procurement of 150,000 treatment packs over four months.

“This is an important signal that the federal government is committed to ensuring that life-saving treatments remain accessible, despite the changing dynamics in external support,” Pate stated.

The minister acknowledged the contributions made by the U.S. over the past two decades but stressed that Nigeria is preparing to reduce its reliance on foreign aid.

“While we greatly appreciate the contributions of the U.S. government over the last 20 years and look forward to continued collaboration, Nigeria under President Bola Tinubu is focused on transforming the health sector through national systems and domestic financing.

“Our goal is to ensure that no patient currently receiving treatment is left without care,” he said.

Mr Pate also announced the establishment of a committee tasked with developing a transition and sustainability plan for the continuity of critical health programs. The committee will include representatives from various ministries and the Nigeria Governors’ Forum.

FG strategizes to fund Nigeria’s HIV response after Trump halted foreign aid

by Folarin Kehinde January 30, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The federal government has expressed commitment to intensify domestic resource mobilisation strategies towards ownership and sustainability of the HIV response in the country with a view to reducing the risks of donor aid policy shifts.

The Director General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS, NACA, assured that efforts are in place to ensure that the country’s strategic goals and targets in the fight against HIV are achieved.

The agency’s Head of Public Relations and Protocol, Toyin Aderibigbe, said that through effective stakeholder collaboration, creation of favourable policies and enabling environment and advocacy to policy makers, Nigeria is committed to achieving the goal of ending AIDS by 2030.

In a signed statement, Aderibigbe said the Federal government was not unmindful of the concern and anxiety elicited by reports of the Trump administration’s suspension of aid for HIV/AIDS programmes and treatment in Nigeria, even as it said it was tackling the challenges of the HIV/AIDS national response.

The statement reads: “The recent executive order by the new U.S. Administration to reevaluate and realign United States’ foreign aid which includes a 90-day pause on foreign development assistance, has raised significant concerns among our stakeholders with regards to HIV/AIDS and TB technical support and funding.

“Nigeria has the highest number of people living with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in West and Central African region. Over the past two decades, partners in the global AIDS response have intensively supported the Nigerian government and institutions in the country, to scale-up prevention, treatment, care, and support for those living with and affected by HIV/AIDS.

“The U.S government through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has immensely supported Nigeria’s HIV/AIDS response over the years, particularly in sustaining the treatment of people living with HIV in Nigeria. PEPFAR Nigeria remains the biggest donor for treatment programme in the country as their contributions covers approximately 90% of the treatment burden.

“Last week, the Trump Administration issued an executive order halting foreign aid for 90 days. However, on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, the Administration issued a waiver for lifesaving medicines and medical services, offering a reprieve for a worldwide HIV treatment programme. This waiver allows for the continuous distribution of HIV medications (ARVs) and medical services supported by PEPFAR in Nigeria.

“The Nigerian government appreciates the U.S. government waiver and is mindful of the potential change to foreign aid in the near future under the new administration. The Nigerian government would intensify domestic resource mobilisation strategies towards ownership and sustainability of the HIV response in the country with a view to reducing the risks of donor aid policy shifts to the HIV response while ensuring that the country’s strategic goals and targets in the fight against HIV are achieved.
