Federal Court Nullifies Ebonyi Local Government Elections

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 22, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Federal High Court sitting in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, has nullified the July 2024 local government and councillorship elections that produced the state’s 13 council chairmen and their councillors.

Delivering judgment on Tuesday, Justice H.I.O. Oshomah ruled that the polls conducted by the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) failed to comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act, rendering the exercise invalid.

The court consequently voided the elections and restrained EBSIEC and the state government from conducting further local government polls unless they strictly adhere to the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act.

The ruling followed a suit filed by Mr. Samuel Udeogu and Mr. Isu Amaechi, represented by counsels Hamilton Ogbodo and Chief Mudi Erhenede, respectively.

Reacting to the judgment, Ogbodo said the decision effectively removed all serving local government chairmen and councillors in the state.

“So, in effect, the local government election conducted in July 2024 in Ebonyi State is no more; it has been cancelled by this Federal High Court today,” he said.

He urged the state government to comply with the court’s directive or risk contempt proceedings once the window for appeal closes.

Senate Approves Bill to Establish Nigeria Mines Rangers Service

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 22, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Nigerian Senate has approved a bill seeking to establish the Nigeria Mines Rangers Service, a specialized agency designed to combat illegal mining and enhance security in mining communities across the country.

The approval followed the adoption of a report presented by the Senate Committee on Solid Minerals Development, chaired by Senator Ekong Samson, during Tuesday’s plenary session.

Presenting the committee’s findings, Senator Samson said the proposed agency would provide “a structured framework to monitor mining activities, enforce environmental and safety laws, and ensure sustainable mining practices.”

Sponsored by Senator Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo, the bill aims to safeguard mining sites, regulate operations, and protect host communities affected by illegal mining.

Lawmakers who spoke in support of the bill described the creation of the Mines Rangers Service as a timely intervention to address the rising cases of illegal mining and insecurity in mineral-rich areas.

Presiding over the session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the initiative, noting that the new agency would strengthen existing mining laws and bring order to the sector.

“This bill, when signed into law, will help protect our natural resources, create jobs, and improve government revenue,” Akpabio said.

The proposed legislation now awaits further legislative processes before transmission to the President for assent.

NDLEA Unveils Digital Platform for Drug Tests, Visa Clearance

written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has launched a new digital platform designed to streamline its drug integrity test and visa clearance processes, making them more efficient, accessible, and effective in combating substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking across Nigeria.

The initiative, known as the Drug Integrity Test and Visa E-Administration System (DITViCAS), was officially unveiled during a press conference on Tuesday in Abuja.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), described the launch as “a paradigm shift in our fight against the scourge of substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking — a moment where enforcement meets efficiency, and commitment merges with cutting-edge technology.”

Marwa, represented by the Agency’s Secretary, Shadrach Haruna, emphasized that the project aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. He noted that the NDLEA remains committed to an aggressive, balanced, and uncompromising approach in addressing drug-related issues, focusing on two critical areas: Drug Supply Reduction and Drug Demand Reduction.

Court sends Nnamdi Kanu’s brother lawyer 10 others to Kuje Prison

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 21, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

A Magistrate Court in Kuje, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, has remanded Prince Emmanuel Kanu, the brother of detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, and his lawyer, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, at the Kuje Correctional Centre.

Their remand follows their participation in the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest held on Monday in Abuja.

Nnamdi Kanu’s younger brother, Kanuta Kanu, revealed the development in a post on X (formerly Twitter) shortly after the court session on Tuesday.

He wrote: “The magistrate sitting in Kuje remanded Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, the lead counsel in Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s case, and Prince Emmanuel Kanu, his youngest brother. This is a conspiracy from the executive, legislature, and judiciary to frustrate Kanu’s trial on Thursday.”

A court document confirming the ruling was also shared on X by Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

According to the police charge sheet, the duo were accused of inciting disturbance and breach of public peace in disobedience to a court order.

Nottingham Forest Appoint Sean Dyche as New Manager

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 21, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Nottingham Forest have confirmed the appointment of Sean Dyche as their new manager, following a turbulent beginning to the Premier League season.

The 54-year-old Englishman, previously in charge at Burnley and Everton, has signed a contract running until the summer of 2027. He becomes Forest’s third manager of the campaign, taking over from Ange Postecoglou, who was dismissed after just 39 days in charge.

Postecoglou’s short stint ended abruptly following a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday. The Australian failed to secure a victory in any of his eight matches at the helm, recording two draws and six losses.

He had been appointed as the successor to Nuno Espirito Santo, who was sacked after only three games into the new season.

Forest currently sit 18th in the Premier League table, with just one win from eight matches, as Dyche takes on the task of steering the club away from the relegation zone.

NLC Gives FG Four Weeks Ultimatum To Meet ASUU’s Demand

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 20, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a four-week ultimatum to the Federal Government to conclude ongoing negotiations with unions in the nation’s tertiary institutions.

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, made this known on Monday during an interactive session with labour correspondents in Abuja. The session followed a meeting between the NLC leadership and representatives of tertiary institution-based unions held at the Congress headquarters.

Ajaero criticized the government’s no-work-no-pay policy, describing it as an unfair sanction against members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for embarking on a nationwide strike.

“We have decided to give the Federal Government four weeks to conclude all negotiations in this sector. They have started talks with ASUU, but the problem goes beyond ASUU,” Ajaero said.

He warned that failure to meet the deadline would prompt the NLC’s National Executive Council (NEC) to convene and decide on nationwide industrial action involving all affiliated unions.

“The era of signing agreements, holding negotiations, and then threatening the unions involved has come to an end,” he stated. “The so-called policy of no work, no pay, will henceforth be no pay, no work. You can’t benefit from an action you instigated.”

Ajaero further accused the government of being responsible for most industrial actions in the country, noting that “90 percent of strikes in Nigeria are caused by the government’s failure to honour agreements.”

Nigerians seek Diasporas’ Intervention in Economic and Political Recovery

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 20, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Nigerians, under the auspices of the League of Patriots, have appealed to the Nigerian Diaspora not to abandon their home country at this trying moment.

Speaking during the League’s delegate virtual review meeting on the state of the nation, monitored by this platform, the convener, Mr Light Shedrack, said that the time for all hands to be on deck to revive Nigeria has come.  Mr Shedrack recounted the contribution and the indispensability of the Nigerian diaspora in redeeming and redirecting the vessel of nationhood.

“For some time now, President Ahmed Bola Tinubu and other well-meaning Nigerians have been calling on Nigerians in diaspora not only to invest in Nigeria, but to get involved in fixing the nation.

The truth is that without those diaspora contributions and remittances, Nigeria’s economy may have sunk irrecoverably.  In 2023 alone, the Diasporas remitted over $19.5 billion.  That increased to $21 billion in 2024.

Simply put, we are living on the diaspora’s healing hands.  The rule has been that the person who holds the gold makes the rule.  It is time for the Diaspora to have their mouth where their wealth lies.

Mr Shedrack re-echoed the belief that Nigerians will fix Nigeria and not the other way round.  He said the expertise, human and capital resources, as well as a new culture of accountability, which has been assimilated by Nigerians in Diasporas, are the vital virtues needed at this point to rejig and reinvigorate the economy and governance.

“Recently, we watched a viral video of a Nigerian medical practitioner who lives in Canada.  He shared his experience about how his friend, who was recently appointed as a public servant in Nigeria, acquired a property in Canada, just few months after his appointment.

He said that his friend was on the verge of acquiring more properties in Canada and told him to scout for new homes to purchase.  An average Nigerian living in Nigeria would have seen that as an opportunity.  We are happy to share from the loot perpetrated by our brothers, sisters and friends in government positions. But one thing stood out for me.

The medical practitioner declined to assist his friend in scouting for houses in Canada, describing it as untamed greed and an unpatriotic act.  Having lived and worked overseas, Nigerians have assimilated basic cultures of patriotism, accountability and moral decency to a higher degree.  They know that greater nationhood is not built on an untamed appetite for more riches at the expense of the masses. We want those virtues to rub off in Nigeria and its governance.

For too long a time, precisely since independence, Nigeria has been plagued by leadership crises, corruption, and inefficiency. The result is a nation that has failed to reach its full potential, despite its vast human and natural resources. Mr Shedrack said that getting the diasporas involved would bring about the magic wand and the very needed change that Nigerians at home desire.

“Nigerians living abroad possess the expertise, resources, and wealth of experience needed to drive economic growth and development. They have excelled in various fields, from business and technology to healthcare and education, in their adopted countries. It is time for them to inject their knowledge and skills into the system, bringing much-needed transformation.

“It is time for a new breed of leaders – technocrats with vision, innovation, and a passion for national development. Nigerians who understand how to optimize resources for the common good of all. Nigerians need leaders who can think outside the box, who can develop policy frameworks with a global outlook that benefit the masses, not just the privileged few. What they have achieved overseas and the contributions they have made across the globe could be replicated in Nigeria.

“Unless we want to pretend, the future of Nigeria is in the hands of these new breeds of leaders residing outside of Nigeria. Will they rise to the challenge? The answer lies in their willingness to serve, to lead, and to transform. Nigeria needs radical transformation now, and it’s up to the diaspora community to make it happen.

“I just want to use this opportunity to appeal to every Nigerian who has a sister, a brother or a friend in diaspora to begin to sound this alarm to them.  Tell them to not only send money for the upkeep of their relatives in Nigeria, but they should also invest more, come home to take up leadership positions and thus help in greater nation building.  This is a clarion call.  It seems like the only way out of our current quagmire.

Access Bank UK Funds CEO’s £15m London Mansion

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 20, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria’s banking giant, Access Bank Plc., Mr. Roosevelt Ogbonna has reportedly acquired a £15 million mansion in one of London’s most prestigious postcodes.

Business Hilights learnt that the transaction for the property was completed in August according discoveries from the Land Registry documents.

Already, Access Bank’s UK arm has also issued a mortgage in connection with the site.

The move adds Ogbonna to a host of celebrities and business magnates who have moved to the street nicknamed ‘Billionaire’s Row’, including the likes of singers Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande, Indian industrialist Lakshmi Mittal and the Sultan of Brunei.

According to a property marketplace listing, the huge eight-bedroom home features a swimming pool, a spa, a cinema, nine bathrooms and a lift to all floors, along with a carefully landscaped garden.

he purchase is one of only two property deals completed on the glamorous street amid signs of a slowdown in the luxury market. The £15 million transaction was a discount from the original £17 million price tag when the house was listed for sale in 2022, while another home on the street sold for £8.8 million in June.

Access Bank is one the largest bank in Nigeria by assets, and the largest in Africa by number of customers with more than 50 million.

Ogbonna, who has worked at Access Bank since 2022, is described by the bank as “a thoroughbred and consummate professional” with “a very rich professional cum academic background.”

In August, Ogbonna resigned as a non-executive director of the bank’s parent company, Access Holdings, but remains managing director and chief financial officer of Access Bank.

The properties on The Bishops Avenue are together thought to be worth hundreds of millions of pounds, though several have become derelict and have remained unoccupied for decades, thus raising questions on the intelligence in buying it in the first instance.
