All you need to about money laundering (Part 1)

by Folarin Kehinde February 1, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

In my experience, neither regular citizen nor those employed in the financial industry really have a clue about what money laundering is or how investigators can follow the money trail to un-coup many other types of crime.

People commit crimes for many reasons i.e. Love, Hate, Politics, Revenge. But mostly, they do it for the money. Every time a crime is committed and money is generated, a bad guy is faced with a problem. That is, how he can conceal the fruits of his crime. He needs to clean up the proceeds of his crime. He needs to launder the money. He needs to make the transaction looks legitimate. All these need to be done for him to be seen as the good guy.

Money Laundering means taking money derived from an illegal act and then putting it through a number of steps so that ultimately that same money appears to have been derived from something legitimate.

History of Money Laundering

The term “Money Laundering” was first coined in the 1930s by the U.S Treasury Agents who were trying to lock up AL Capone. In those days, very few people had running water, much less a washing machine, so commercial laundries were very common. Capone and his mob owned hundreds of laundries in and around Chicago and they disguised the earnings from their Liquor business as money honestly earned from operating the laundries…

We live at the mercy of organized crime every single day of our lives and most people (Nigerians) never even noticed it. It affects everything that we do. Think about a typical day in your own life. You get up in the morning and get dressed; you put on that new shirt that you just bought and a button pops off as you button up.  You paid as much as N25,000 for that choice shirt of yours, because it has a label of one of the famous  Italian designers.  In fact, you actually paid more for the shirt because of the name and the label. And what you don’t know is that the shirt wasn’t manufactured in Italy but in Aba, in a factory controlled by a politician that manufactures knock offs of everything from shirts to car spare parts.

You get into your car and you drive to work, Traffic is terrible. A car has broken down and is blocking traffic, the engine has stalled because there is dirt in the fuel gas line. The car owner bought fuel at a small fuel station that purchases its product from a company that is controlled by organized crime. And these organized crime guys buy low quality fuel, bribe the authorities whose responsibility it is to check the quality of the fuel imported and smuggle it into the country and sell it at a reduced price to small independent marketers who in turn sell same to you.

A little later on traffic slows again, contractors who were originally awarded the paving contract had mob connections and were able to rig the bid in the tender process so they came in with lowest price. But to make money at that price, they only put down half an inch of asphalt instead of the full inch that were supposed to. When the inspector from the city came to check the quality of the work, whether it tallies with what was agreed on, they gave him some money and he looks the other way.

The whole thing is giving you heartburn you can’t take it anymore after a long hectic day, you head for your favourite bar but it’s closed, out of business. It seems that they just couldn’t compete with the bar across the street, a new place where they don’t seem to be that interested in making a profit, why? Because it’s owned by the organization that imported the pot that your son got caught with, and they are using the bar to launder the proceeds of their drug sales or political loots.

Organized crime touches us all every day in ways that perhaps you never even consider. Keep your eyes open….. (To be continued)

Oshiomhole’s Doomday (Part 1): May face prosecution over N50b; N14b Sure-P Fund, $54m LGs fund

by Folarin Kehinde February 1, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

Karma is at the doorstep of every man.  Only time tells when everyone will receive his own fair share of it.  The immediate past National Chairman of the ruling All Progress Congress party and the former Governor of Edo State, Adams Aliu Oshiomhole has every reason to be sad, depressed, and frustrated as his past involving diversion of over N100billion and $75million may soon be brought bare before him in the court of the land.

Allegations of corruption, diversion of public fund and falsification of his academic credentials may drown him from fairy national stance. Untamed corruption that allegedly characterized his administration as the then Edo State Government are being currently revisited by the anti-corruption agencies, LeadingReporters can authoritatively reveal.

Among the corruption cases of criminal diversion of public funds hanging on the shoulder of Oshiomhole are N70billion loan, N20billion ecological funds that accrued to the state between November, 11, 2008 to 2014; US$273 loan, N35billion Edo State Water Storm project, accessed from the Nigeria Capital Market.

Other allegations contained in a detailed report titled “Oshiomhole’s black book” which is believed to be currently with the anticorruption agencies and which was sighted by LeadingReporters Lead Investigator include:

  1. Diversion of $54million being Federal Government’s contribution to Power Sector Special Sector Intervention Fund which, Oshiomhole allegedly cornered to his pocket.
  2. N130billion Internally Generated Revenue which was allegedly cornered by Oshiomhole using proxies
  3. Diversion of N3billion received from Bank of Industry for small and medium enterprises SME in Edo State which was allegedly diverted into personal account by Oshiomhole as the then Governor of Edo State.
  4. N5billion Millennium Development Goal fund which was allegedly diverted by the then Governor of Edo state and the immediate past Chairman of the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC party.

Oshiomhole’s critics say his vituperations may not save him as reality of his perennial ignorance and larger-than-life attitude have dawn on him. “The era of touts are over”, one of his critics who did not want his name on prints said.

Group calls for closure of 7-Up factory in Abuja and sack of top NAFDAC officers over safety concerns

by Folarin Kehinde February 1, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

A Non-governmental Organization, Transparency Advocacy for Development Initiative TADI, has called on the Federal Government and the anti-corruption agencies to sack, probe and possibly prosecute top officers of National Agency for Food, Drug Administration Control, NAFDAC over what it terms selves over national safety by the officers of NAFDAC.  The group alleged that NAFDAC officials have compromised the safety of Nigerians by failing to wade into the safety and unhygienic dispositions of 7-Up Bottling Company Abuja, despite several petitions to that effect.

In a Press Release by TADI, through its Executive Director Ambassador Yomi David which was exclusively obtained by LeadingReporters, the group asserted that basic cleanliness is an absolute necessity for a people to lead healthy lifestyles.  But when this safety is thrown to the winds by the organisations that should place safety and good hygiene in the front burner, infections, diseases and deaths become the lot of the people, especially the consumers of those compromised products.

“In recent times, record has shown that due to lack of proper hygiene and clean environment, the world has lost over two million people in the second quarter of year 2020.  Mostly affected are Children 70%, Women 20% and Men 10%.

“We are calling on the Federal Government to sack the principal officers of NAFDAC, due to lack of regular and detailed assessment on the manufacturing companies like 7-up bottling company and their facilities, lack of disciplinary action on offenders among other unpatriotic negligence exhibited by NAFDAC officials.

“Instead of carrying out their duties patriotically, money has become another god that veils the conscience of these government officers and this has put the lives of countless Nigerians in danger who consume the product of these companies that care less about the wellbeing of Nigerians.

“Our investigations showed that these officials have abandoned due diligence for pecuniary gains at the detriment of the health and well- being of Nigerians who consume Seven UP products.

“Therefore, the Transparency Advocacy for Development Initiative uses this medium to call for the closure of Seven –UP Bottling Company Ltd, our investigation has found to be culpable.

As a civil society, we believe that the health of fellow Nigerians is paramount, hence, the need for seven Up to sit up and begin to right all the wrongs by immediately upgrading its facilities and improving the environment in other to prevent further danger to the health and lives of Nigerians.

11 Staff of water resources Ministry tests positive to Covid-19

by Folarin Kehinde February 1, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

No fewer than 11 staff of the Ministry of Water Resources have tested positive to the ravaging new strain of Corona Virus, LeadingReporters can authoritatively report.

As it stands now, according to an insider report, the Ministry looks like a haunted office as staff have flee their offices, with many going into self-isolation.

The new strain of the virus is believed to be more lethal as the number of Covid-19 deaths continues to increase across the nation.

There are indications that Federal Government may not entirely shut down the country as that may have a devastating economic effect or even lead to another round of protest that many believe would be worse than the #EndSars protest.

However, there may be extreme enforcement of Covid-19 safety rules across board if the number of affected persons and Covid 19-related deaths continue to rise.

COVID-19: FG attribute delay of vaccine to politics and logistics

by Folarin Kehinde February 1, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nigeria says the first batch of 100,000 doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine against COVID-19 is delayed because of  “politics and logistics due to no fault of Nigeria.”

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed who disclosed this in Abuja on Sunday, said the issue of vaccine was a serious one to government which had put every needed infrastructure in place for its storage.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the minister said: “The fact that these vaccines will now come in February is not due to Nigeria’s fault.

“We are very ready to receive the 100,00 doses and we have the infrastructure, even when it is going to be preserved at about -70 Degree Celsius,’’ he said.

The minister said the ultra-cold freezers to store the Pfizer vaccine candidate doses upon their arrival in the country had already been acquired before the companies said it had to wait till February.

Mohammed, a member of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19,  said government had also accessed the African Union (AU)  and other international agencies for vaccines.

He assured that in the next two years, they would be able to vaccinate about 70 per cent of the population.

The minister underscored the need for sustained advocacy campaign against the position of some people who had bad-mouthed the vaccines that it had a lot of resistance.

“We have to appeal to our traditional, religious and political leaders to understand that as of today, there is no other silver bullets than the vaccines.

“They are the only option  that can save humanity from the deadly virus and the elites must take the lead in this campaign.

“We must disabuse our minds from the campaign of naysayers that the vaccines are dangerous, it can cause impotency or meant to depopulate some parts of the world,’’ he said.

Mohammed said that Nigeria would strive like other countries of the world to access enough vaccines for its people.

He said the WHO had certified the vaccines to be safe and efficacious, therefore, the concern should be availability, affordability and logistics for distribution.

He reiterated that the vaccines were the most effective and quickest way for the world to resume normal life of restraints and restrictions.

The minister said the spike in the cases of COVID-19 and fatality was largely because Nigerians had refused to abide by the basic non-pharmaceutical intervention principles.

He said Nigerians were not heeding the basic principles, including wearing facial masks, not gathering in places, keeping social distancing, washing of hands regularly and using hand sanitisers.

Mohammed said that while President Muhammadu Buhari had signed the COVID-19 Regulations, Nigerians must take personal responsibility for their safety.

SON alerts on under dispensing of medical gases – Warn plant owers

by Folarin Kehinde February 1, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has issued an alert to the public on recent complaints received on under-dispensing of oxygen and other medical gases by plant owners in some parts of the country.

A statement from the office of the Director General, Mallam Farouk Salim described Oxygen as a critical product in the treatment of respiratory ailments in emergency situations, particularly in the management of the COVID-19 pandemic, stressing that its use by certified medical personnel is strictly in recommended volumes and dosages for effectiveness in treatment.

According to the SON Chief Executive, the inadequacy in volume and dosage of oxygen and other medical gases has been reported to have consequences on the treatment of patients in the country resulting to loss of lives in some cases.

He therefore warned Gas Plants across the country to ensure accurate volume in the sale of oxygen and other medical gases to Customers as a matter of responsibility.

Mallam Salim admonished health institutions and Practitioners to carefully and regularly check the pressure of Oxygen and other medical gas cylinders for strict compliance with labelled specifications.

He disclosed that SON Offices across the 36 States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory have been directed to ensure close monitoring and strict compliance with standards of volume in the sale of oxygen and other medical gases to Customers by Gas Plants

The SON Director General warned that any Gas Plant or Dealer found to be under-dispensing oxygen or other medical gases would be made to face the full weight of the law as enshrined in the SON Act No. 14 of 2015.

The Tottering Nigeria Ship of State

by Folarin Kehinde January 30, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

All watchers of the Nigerian political space must be agreed that at the present, the Nigerian ship of state is tottering.

Yes, Nigeria is a clearly wickedly structured country designed to fail. It has since its origin been seen as an unworkable union sustained by the greed and avarice of the political players.

Ahmadu Bello, the Premier of Northern Nigeria never believed in it and said so clearly and also said that if the new country would be acceptable to him and his tribesmen, it must be as an extension of the Estate of Othman Dan Fodio, the grand patron of the Fulani tribe.

Chief Obafemi Awolowo did not mince words in describing it as a mere geographical expression on paper. Conspiracy theories mentioned him to be behind Nigeria’s first military coup and to have planned other insurrections to end the evil arrangement.

Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe lamented at one time that if this union would not work, let’s peacefully close it up and go our different ways.

Today, Nigeria is popularly called a “contraption” instead of a country.

All those who have seized power in the Nigerian political space be they the Nigerian military or politicians has never been mandated by majority of Nigerians. They have either shot their way to power with the gun in military coups or stolen the mandates through election rigging and brigandage.

It is obvious that Nigeria has done nothing with the huge human and mineral resources it has than to totter as a drunken man because like the irresponsible drunken man, the rulers has displayed the highest form of irresponsibility in their misuse of the huge financial and human resources of the country concentrating more on stealing money with open bravado from the national treasury or wasting what they cannot steal.

Meanwhile, never has there been a time in the history of Nigeria when the Nigerian ship of state has been in the state it is in today. The tottering of Nigeria under the Presidency that is being run in the name of Muhammadu Buhari is like a floating piece of paper in a whirlwind. The only prospect one can see for Nigeria today is the likelihood of the piece of paper in a whirlwind falling into a bonfire, the sea or on the highway where fast moving Dangote trucks are struggling to navigate out of muddy potholes.

It is clear that shipwreck and bonfire is going to consume Nigeria in not so distant time and if those fail, the Dangote trailers would certainly bury the piece of paper in the muddy potholes in all of Nigeria’s roads.

The worst part of our condition is that the so-called elite in the academia are waiting to be bribed. They are not willing to do anything because they can find food to eat at present. They cannot see beyond their nose that before long some hungry Nigerian youth who they call hoodlums would soon come for them.

The political hawks and vultures are having a field day on the carcass of the dead elephant (Nigeria). They cannot see beyond their noses. They strongly believe that they can pay for enough firearms to keep the hungry, listless, hapless and disoriented youth at bay. These are the blind and brainless rulers of Nigeria. They are so blind and brainless and also deaf that they could not see or hear or remember what happened in Central African Republic in 2013 when Fulani rogue rulers like them took over that country and proceeded like they are doing in Nigeria now to expropriate and subjugate the rest of the populace politically, economically and religiously.

Perhaps the worst failures are the Nigerian youth who have over the years demonstrated a failure to use their brain. Demographically, the youth age people of Nigeria are more in numbers than the rest of Nigeria. Yet they sit back helplessly and watch rogue rulers rubbish our commonwealth and the only thing they do is to seek for ways to join them. One of the worst of the groups is the youth of Niger Delta. Nigeria is hanging on a single hinge – the oil. The oil is extorted from the Niger Delta. The youth of Niger Delta like their older generations are satisfied to receive bribe from the Fulani minority overlords – a bribe paid for by the oil money coming from their own land where they cannot farm or fish again. That they are satisfied to be bribed by the Fulani with cash and scholarships abroad and sidelined from having access to the wealth coming from their own land is what I cannot understand how a people would sit by and let it happen.

One of the most worrying parts of the whole joke of a country is that the people and youth mainly are afraid to die and yet through the instrumentality of the Nigeria Police Force and Military, they are being killed on daily basis. This is why I said in past write-ups that “Nigerians are dead people who are afraid of being killed.” I cannot understand.

Well, history is not on the side of Nigerian politicians, rogue rulers and the Fulani. They have ignited a whirlwind that must destroy all of them. The time is coming and not so far away when the hapless youth would discover that it would be better to die fighting than to die like fools and chickens for sacrifice.

My advice to the Fulani and their comrades-in-arms rest of the rogue political class in Nigeria is to know that there is enough and to spare in this country when equity and rule of law is allowed to reign in it.  You need to redress your steps now before it is too late.  You think you have the Nigerian military and Police behind you.  You must know that it is only a few of the military and police who are enjoying the loot with you and that when the revolt shall come, the largest majority of the men and women under arms are going to turn those guns on you and cause your blood and those of your wives and children to be spilled on the streets of Nigeria.

The above is not my plan.  It is what happens in history.  Remember the theory of the species.  Once one particular species starts over-exploiting the ecosystem, nature engenders a revolt that changes it all.  Avoid having to be on the run like the Fulani from Central African Republic.  Wake up and learn.

President Buhari’s nephew Sabiu Tunde allegedly joins NIA for diplomatic immunity

by Folarin Kehinde January 28, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Buhari’s nephew Tunde, as he is fondly called, has by this, joined other cabal members to look for diplomatic shield and immunity that may protect them from the scimitar of law in the event of any eventuality or should President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure ends and a probe is launched against his tenure by President Buhari’s successor, a discreet source revealed. The new job offer is discreet and would only be leveraged when the need arises.  He would still remain President Buhari’s personal assistant in the villa.

Unlike other members of the inner caucus popular called the “Villa Cabal” like the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami and Minister of State for Aviation Sariki Hadi who, this platform learnt are vying for governorship positions in their respective states which will grant them immunity from prosecution if they win, Sabiu Tunde Yusuf on the other hand would seek for his own ‘shield’ from NIA as he would be immediately deployed overseas where he diplomatic immunity would shield him from any prosecution or probe in Nigeria.

President Buhari‘s nephew appointment, from our investigation would enable Yusuf exit Nigeria and enjoy diplomatic immunity from any form of prosecution should Buhari’s successor chooses to probe President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure, especially the cabal members.

Recall that critics and some prominent Nigerians have continued to raise their voices against the prevailing insecurity and the President’s refusal to sack the service chiefs amidst untamed corruption and other forms of criminality which has bedeviled Nigeria for some times now.  Another major concern is the accusation that President Muhammadu Buhari left governance in the hands of unpatriotic elements who have put selfish and personal interests above national interests.

Nigeria’s rising debt profile, and the President’s untamed quest for foreign loan have been described as the Nigeria development greatest threat.

Recently, President Buhari’s closest ally and the Executive Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir Ahmed El-Rufai has recently spoke up against the increasing debt profile of Nigeria. El-Rufai, who is known to be a strong pillar of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration said that Nigeria has reached its borrowing limit. He said that Nigerians should be concerned about Nigeria’s rising debt profile.
