NAHCON officials arrested over diversion of 2025 Hajj Funds

by Folarin Kehinde August 20, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Commissioner of Policy, Personnel and Finance (PPMF) at the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Aliu Abdulrazak, has been arrested and detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged fraud, Daily Trust can confirm.

Specifically, Abdulrazak, who was detained alongside the agency’s Director of Finance and Accounts (DFA), Aminu Y. Muhammed, was still in the custody of the anti-graft agency as of when filing this report last night.

It was learnt that both officials of NAHCON honoured an invitation extended to them by the commission, and they were later arrested after their failure to refund some funds allegedly diverted.

According to reports their arrest came amid a series of allegations bordering on the mismanagement of some funds during the conduct of the 2025 Hajj exercise.

The Forum of Chief Executives of State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Boards/Agencies/Commissions recently described as “a total failure”, the Hajj operation under NAHCON chairman, Prof Abdullahi Saleh Usman (popularly known as Professor Pakistan).

The anti-graft agency had earlier this month quizzed other senior NAHCON officials, including Abdulmalik Diggi, Deputy Director (Accounts) and special adviser (General Services) to the Chairman/CEO.

Others were: Sirajo Usman Salisu, Deputy Director in the Chairman’s Office, and Barrister Nura Danladi, the commission’s Legal Adviser.

Credible sources revealed last night that Abdulrazak and Muhammed are also under investigation for their alleged involvement in another case of fund diversion dating back to the tenure of former chairman, Ahmad Jalal Arabi.

Alleged fraud: Court freezes ex-NNPCL boss Mele Kyari’s N661m in four bank accounts

by Folarin Kehinde August 19, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered a temporary freezing of four Jaiz Bank accounts linked to the former Group Managing Director (GMD) of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kolo Kyari, over allegations bordering on fraud.

Justice Emeka Nwite issued the order on Tuesday while ruling on an ex parte motion marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1641 brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which was argued by its lawyer, Ogechi Ujam.

Although the EFCC had urged the court to freeze the account for 60 days to enable it to conclude the ongoing investigation, Justice Nwite limited the tenure of the order to 30, which he said could be renewed if necessary.

Ujam had told the court that the temporary freezing order was necessary because the accounts were currently being investigated in a case involving the offences of conspiracy, abuse of office and money laundering pending the conclusion of the investigation.

She identified the accounts as Jaiz Bank account number: 0017922724 with account name: Mele Kyari; Jaiz Bank account number: 0017922724 with account name: Mele Kyari; Jaiz Bank account number: 0018575055 with account name: Guwori Community Dev. and Jaiz Bank account number: 0018575141 with account name: Guwori Community Development Foundation Flood Relief.

Ruling, Justice Nwite said, “I have listened to counsel to the applicant and gone through the affidavit evidence with the exhibits and written address attached.

“I find that this application is meritorious and it is hereby granted as prayed,” he said.

The judge then adjourned till September 23 for the EFCC to report on further developments.

The EFCC predicated its motion on three grounds, to the effect that the bank accounts are subject matters of ongoing investigation by the commission in relation to misappropriation of funds.

It stated that the preliminary investigation conducted thus far revealed that the bank accounts are linked to the suspect, who took advantage of the complainant to be a contract facilitator and launder proceeds of unlawful activities.

The EFCC added that there is a need to preserve the funds in the identified bank accounts pending the conclusion of the investigation and possible prosecution,” it added.

It stated, in a supporting affidavit, that officials of its Special Investigations (SIS) unit received a petition dated April 24 and filed by a group, the Guardian of Democracy and Rule of Law, against Kyari.

It said investigation so far revealed, among others, “that N661,464,601.50, which are suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities, warehoused in four different accounts.

“These funds were traced to the suspect Mele Kolo Kyari, who is the former Group Managing Director (GMD) of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

“The suspect opened various accounts in Jaiz Bank, which have been used to receive suspicious inflows from NNPC and various oil companies that have dealings with NNPC.

“Bank records revealed that these accounts are controlled and managed by Mr Kyari through his family members who are acting as fronts.

“Further investigation revealed that the said transactions in the various accounts were disguised as payments for a purported book launch and activities of a non-governmental organisation (NGO).

“The commission (EFCC) has written to Jaiz Bank, where the four accounts referred to are domiciled, for the hard copies of the comprehensive account details.

“While responses of the banks are being awaited, the commission has written to post a no debit instruction on the accounts, which will only last for 72 hours.

“An order of this honourable court is necessary to freeze the said accounts clearly described in schedule 1 to the Motion paper for while investigation is ongoing.

“It is in the interest of justice to grant this application,” it said.

NCAA Bans Phone Use During Flights

by Folarin Kehinde August 19, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Following recent unpalatable airport incidents, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has mandated that all passengers must switch off their phones during civil flights.

At a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, NCAA Director General, Chris Najomo, said all phones must be switched off during the critical aspects of flight takeoff and landing in all airports in Nigeria.

The directive by the civil aviation regulator followed a recent controversial brawl that involved a passenger, Comfort Emmanson, and an Ibom Air flight attendant.

The NCAA boss said this would further put a stop to different rules by airlines, which have caused some sort of confusion among passengers of late.

“As a takeaway and to avoid ambiguity and confusion, all mobile phones and other portable electric devices should be switched off during the critical stage of flight on all Nigerian airlines. Switch off. Nothing like flight mode any longer.

“Nigerian air operators are therefore required to amend their operators’ manuals to reflect this requirement and submit to the NCAA for approval,” he declared.

We remain alert to future reviews of this requirement as aircraft technological enhancement improves.

“It remains the responsibility of the crew to communicate this requirement to the passengers and the responsibility of the passenger to comply with crew instructions,” he added.

NNPP Cannot Align With APC – Galadima

by Nelson Ugwuagbo August 19, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

A chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Buba Galadima, has dismissed the possibility of any political alliance between the party’s leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and President Bola Tinubu’s All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking in an interview with Channels Television on Monday, Galadima pointed to the ongoing Kano Emirate crisis as evidence of deep divisions between the two sides.

“How can Kwankwaso be a friend of the APC with what they are doing to us in Kano? Appointing two emirs in one town? There is a Federal Government emir and a state emir. Who has the responsibility to appoint emirs and pay them their salaries?” he asked.

Galadima further accused security agencies of being deployed to protect one faction of the Kano emirate while neglecting the worsening insecurity faced by residents across the state.

“They have their emirs. They have not less than 40 pickup vehicles filled with mobile police guarding the Emir (Ado Bayero). In some localities in Kano, people are being killed and their handsets taken, while the police are tied down. Are they not ashamed?” he queried.

Anambra Govt Condemns Assault on NYSC Member, Arrests Security Operatives

by Nelson Ugwuagbo August 19, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Anambra State Government has condemned the assault on a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Ms. Jennifer Elobor, by operatives of the state’s security outfit, confirming that those involved have been arrested and detained.

The incident, which sparked outrage after a video went viral on social media, showed armed operatives storming a corps members’ lodge and accusing the occupants of internet fraud despite their display of NYSC identification cards and uniforms. The footage further revealed the officers beating Ms. Elobor, tearing her clothes, and leaving her partly unclothed.

Reacting to the development, Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s Special Adviser on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, described the attack as “unfortunate and unacceptable” during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Tuesday. He confirmed that the operatives had been taken into custody and placed under investigation.

According to Emeakayi, the incident occurred during a joint security operation known as Operation Udo Gatchi. He explained that the operatives were pursuing suspected cultists on motorcycles when they entered a residential compound and began conducting searches.

“In the process of searching the houses in line with their mandate, the unfortunate incident involving the corps member occurred. While they were acting within the law, their conduct in that instance was unacceptable,” he said.

He added that the state government responded immediately once the assault was reported.

Retired federal workers to earn additional N32,000 monthly – FG

by Folarin Kehinde August 18, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

All retired federal employees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) are soon to start receiving a N32,000 monthly pension increase.

The sum will be paid to each of them from a N758 billion bond approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for clearing all outstanding pension liabilities.

President Tinubu okayed the bond to ensure that the retirees also benefited from the National Minimum Wage Amendment Act 2024 and Consequential Adjustments.

The N32,000 is the baseline every retiree in the education and health sectors, as well as security and the Armed Forces on the CPS will earn monthly, irrespective of his or her accumulated savings.

President Tinubu had on August 6, directed the “prompt implementation of long-overdue pension increases and a minimum pension guarantee, which would provide a safety net for the most vulnerable pensioners under the CPS.”

An official of the National Pension Commission (PenCom) confirmed to The Nation that ‘’with the National Assembly’s recent concurrence with the President’s directive, the bond proceeds will soon be available to settle the retirees.”

Another official of the commission, who shed more light on the initiative, said: “The pension increase for CPS retirees and the minimum pension guarantee means setting a baseline amount that every retiree under the Contributory Pension Scheme would receive, no matter how small their accumulated savings are.

‘’This acts as a financial safety net to protect the poorest and most vulnerable retirees from falling into poverty.”

PenCom’s Director-General, Omolola Oloworaran, had earlier explained how the N758 billion bond for pension payments would be allocated across three critical categories.

She said: “N253 billion of the bonds will be dedicated to clearing accrued rights. These are entitlements due to federal workers employed before the CPS commenced in 2004, and those who had about three years to retirement at the time.

‘’This intervention clears the backlog of accrued rights payments and will put an end to the delays in pension disbursements that have caused frustration in recent months.”

On longstanding arrears, Oloworaran explained that, “N387.5 billion will be committed to pension increases dating back to 2007. That is almost two decades of increments left unpaid. This administration has decided to take the matter seriously and settle all outstanding pension increases from 2007 till date.”

She added that N107 billion has been earmarked for the Pension Protection Fund, which is designed to support low-income retirees.

She said: “This fund is meant to augment pensions for low-income earners to enable them to earn a living wage.

“We are working with relevant agencies to conclude the bond issuance quickly. Once that is done, Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) will credit retirees’ savings accounts, and retirees will be able to claim their entitlements without delay. PFAs have committed to prompt payments once funds are available, while PenCom will provide oversight to ensure beneficiaries are paid immediately.”

According to Oloworaran, the intervention is central to restoring trust in the CPS.

“Confidence in the CPS has waned in recent years due to unresolved liabilities. This payment initiative allows us to rebuild trust and demonstrates that the government is committed to protecting the welfare of ordinary Nigerians,” she said.

The National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) had last year announced the pension adjustment, confirming that retirees would receive an additional N32,000 per month following the passage of the new minimum wage law.

JUST IN: Akpabio returns from London vacation amid health speculation

by Folarin Kehinde August 18, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has returned to Nigeria after a short vacation in London, dispelling widespread rumours about his health.

Akpabio arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at 4am on Monday and was received by senators, aides and supporters at the presidential wing.

His absence after attending the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva, Switzerland, from July 29 to 31, had sparked speculation on social media that he was critically ill and hospitalised.

Speaking with journalists on arrival, Akpabio dismissed the rumours, describing them as baseless.

“There’s nothing like such. I’m fit as a fiddle. I only stopped over in London for a short vacation,” he said.

Paternity Fraud: 25% of fathers not biological parents – Report

by Folarin Kehinde August 18, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nigeria’s leading DNA centre, Smart DNA, has released its 2025 Annual DNA Testing Report, highlighting a surge in immigration-related DNA cases amid the country’s ongoing “Japa” wave, while paternity disputes remain a persistent concern.

According to the report, released on Sunday in Lagos, immigration-related DNA testing rose sharply to 13.1 per cent of all cases between July 2024 and June 2025, a trend driven by families seeking documentation for relocation abroad.

“The increase reflects the growing number of dual-citizenship families securing foreign papers for their children, often as ‘second passport’ insurance,” the centre noted.

The report also shows that Nigeria’s paternity exclusion rate remains at 25 per cent, meaning one in four presumed fathers tested are not the biological parents of the children in question. Though slightly lower than the 27 per cent recorded in 2024, the figure underscores the scale of uncertainty in family structures.

Findings further revealed that firstborn children are most affected by paternity discrepancies, with firstborn sons accounting for 64 per cent of negative results.

The study also pointed to a striking gender divide in DNA test initiations: men requested nearly 90 per cent of paternity tests, compared to just 11.8 per cent initiated by women.

Smart DNA’s Operations Manager, Elizabeth Digia, called for urgent interventions through legal reform, healthcare integration, and public education.

Nigeria lacks specific paternity fraud laws, unlike South Africa, leaving men with little legal recourse after years of financial responsibility for children proven not to be theirs,” she said.

Digia urged that DNA testing be integrated into family health programs and premarital counselling, stressing that misconceptions still fuel mistrust.

“Many believe DNA testing is only for wealthy families or assume physical resemblance guarantees paternity. Our role is to provide certainty through accurate testing while encouraging sensitive handling of this life-changing information,” she added.

The centre concluded that the data paints a troubling picture of family trust, identity, and the socio-economic pressures shaping Nigerian households today.

Ibom Air: I can’t face my real estate business clients – Emmanson cries out

by Folarin Kehinde August 18, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Comfort Emmanson, the passenger at the centre of the altercation with Ibom Air crew members, has said the incident has left her traumatised and ruined her reputation.

In a video shared on her Instagram story on Sunday, Emmanson recounted that she was stopped from leaving the aircraft after the Lagos-bound flight landed on August 10, 2025.

She alleged that the flight attendant who earlier insisted she switch off her mobile phones dragged her back into the plane, tore at her hair, clothes and jewellery, and broke her phones.

She said she was then stripped partially naked as other staff and bystanders recorded her while mocking her.

According to her, being exposed in such a manner and seeing the videos shared online have caused her deep emotional pain.

She lamented that the recordings have been turned into social media content and WhatsApp stickers, leaving her too ashamed to face clients in her real estate business.

She partly said, “Going out of the aircraft, this lady Juliana stopped me. I asked her, why did you stop me? Why are you stopping me from going out of the aircraft? Everybody had left so I needed to go out. She didn’t say anything to me, she was just staring at me with the same bad eye. That was when I remembered that this was the same person instructing me to put off my phone. That was when I started recording and then she backed the person facing me and I told her to let me pass but she didn’t answer me, she ignored me.

“When she noticed I was making a video, she now pulled me back inside the aircraft and dragged my frontal, dragged my gold from my neck, my clothes, and my phones. The phone broke. The pain of doing that to me was when I went to poke her.”
