BREAKING: I Will Run in 2027 – Atiku

by Folarin Kehinde August 25, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said he will contest the 2027 presidential election, dismissing speculations that he may withdraw from the race.

He also used the opportunity to defend the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, stressing that although it could not influence the outcome of recent by-elections, it remains a formidable force capable of reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape.

Atiku’s position was made public through his long-time associate and spokesperson during the 2023 elections, Tunde Olusunle, who disclosed the remarks to Thisday Newspaper on Sunday night.

Olusunle explained that Atiku was determined to rescue Nigeria from what he described as “intensive care” under the current administration of President Bola Tinubu.

The former Vice President, who recently resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is aligned with the ADC, a party that has attracted several heavyweight politicians in recent months.

Atiku lamented what he described as the “mega-scale thievery, loss of values, and lack of accountability” under the present government, vowing that the ADC movement would “shock the world” by mobilising Nigerians to upstage the status quo in 2027.

“I will be offering myself to lead the reclamation and reconstruction of our traumatised homeland,” Olusunle quoted him as saying after a private engagement with the former Vice President.

He further clarified that the coalition, which was adopted only a few months ago, could not have been expected to perform spectacularly in the by-elections that were just held. Nonetheless, he insisted that the ADC-led movement was a potent force with the capacity to deliver an upset in the next general election.

Atiku’s renewed declaration also comes amid reports suggesting that he might step back from the race. Over the weekend, Prof. Ola Olateju of Achievers University, Owo, who represented Atiku at a defection event in Lagos, had suggested that the former Vice President was more focused on building a better Nigeria than on becoming president “at all costs.”

However, Atiku has since distanced himself from Olateju’s remarks. From his holiday home in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), he reportedly clarified that the statement was not authorised.

“When people stand in for me at events, we preview my thoughts on the instant subject. In this particular instance, there was no engagement with me to distill my thoughts. Prof. Olateju was not speaking for me,” Atiku was quoted as saying.

“I will run in 2027. Nigeria needs to be decisively rescued from the intensive care unit it has been consigned. The degeneration in our country, the level of poverty and pain, the anguish, is unacceptable.”

Police can search you without warrant if…..— Delta Command PRO

by Folarin Kehinde August 23, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Public Relations Officer (PRO), Delta State Police Command, SP Bright Edafe, has said that police officers have the authority to search people’s pockets and bags without a warrant if there is reasonable suspicion.

Edafe disclosed this in a post on X on Saturday while announcing the arrest of a suspected thief found in possession of a firearm.

“Do the police have the right to search you randomly without a search warrant? The answer is yes; search you and not your houses or your phones. But to search you, your bag, pockets, is allowed.

“This chap was standing at a club around 5am looking suspicious, when operatives of RRS intercepted and searched him, and this gun was recovered. Listen to his reason for taking the gun to the club,” he wrote.

In a video that accompanied the post, Edafe explained how operatives of the Rapid Response Squad on visibility patrol around DBS Road, near Don and Master, intercepted a young man who was carrying a bag in a suspicious manner.

He said, “While operatives of the Rapid Response Squad of the Delta State Police Command were on their visibility patrol around DBS road, just by Don and Master, they saw this young man carrying a bag, he was sighted in a suspicious manner, he was intercepted and searched.

“When his bag was searched, this gun was found in his bag, this is the magazine and these are the ammunitions that were recovered from him.”

“Bassey Udoh did not only have this in his possession. In the course of our investigation, we discovered that he usuaully scale through the fence of people’s houses while they’re sleeping and steals their generator.

“At times use the gate to come out and or also take it out through the fence. The time of their operation are usually between the hours of 4am and 5am,” he added.

Only 7 Local Governments in Nigeria has functional websites –ICPC

by Folarin Kehinde August 22, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has revealed that only seven out of 774 Local Government Areas in Nigeria have functional websites where information about their activities, spending and other critical information can be accessed.

The anti-graft agency specifically said owing to lack of functional websites, there is a transparency challenge across all the third tier of government, saying all the six geo-political zones are culpable.

Musa Aliyu, the Chairman of the ICPC, who disclosed this when he appeared on a Channels TV programme on Friday anchored by a former Presidential spokesman, Laolu Akande, also disclosed that some workers in the health sector and schools also divert donations for their personal use.

Daily Trust reports that the issue of local government autonomy has been on the front burner since last year when the Supreme Court gave a landmark judgment that granted financial autonomy to the third tier of government.

But one year after the apex court’s judgment, the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration has yet to enforce the ruling, as state governments under the leadership of governors continue to have control over the councils’ coffers.

Local governments are saddled with the responsibilities of ensuring the well-being of the people at the grassroots through provisions of primary education, primary health centres, marketplaces, inner roads, parks, sanitation, among other essential services. But over the years, state governments have usurped these roles.

Speaking during the programme monitored by our correspondent, the ICPC boss explained that it would be difficult for Nigerians to enjoy good governance if critical information about LGAs remains shrouded in secrecy.

“Recently, because of the focal decision, we have now initiated a programme we call corruption prevention programme in the local government areas. We are using five thematic areas: One, the issue of open fiscal transparency, open procurements, the issue of corruption control, human resources and citizen engagement.

“Also, we are now trying to say, okay, we developed that each local government should have a website so that they can put out information. What we discovered was that there are only seven local governments with functional websites in Nigeria. That is to say we have a lot of problems because we cannot go all over.

“That’s why we say, okay, why can’t we have a website? Publish these things, so that people will know what you’re doing, otherwise, it will be difficult for us to know, so that there will be transparency.

“All these local government areas are not from one geo-political zone. Almost all the LGAs in all the six geo-political zones don’t have a single functional website. The issue of transparency is now a challenge in the LGAs.

“You will see that a public officer, who is supposed to put a street light for the public to use, will now put it in his house,” Aliyu said.

According to him, the commission would continue to track constituency projects implementation. He also said the agency in collaboration with the EFCC would continue to push for a bill on unexplainable wealth to be passed into a law.

He added, “When you look at it, there is this issue of constituency projects that the National Assembly is doing, and ICPC has what we call a constituency project tracking initiative, whereby we’re following projects that are in critical areas: education, health sector, agriculture or empowerment, to see these things go down to the members of the public, the real downtrodden people.

Fake cowbell milk now in circulation – NAFDAC warns

by Folarin Kehinde August 22, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Friday warned Nigerians about the circulation of counterfeit Cowbell “Our Milk” 12g sachets in the market.

In an alert posted on its website, the agency disclosed that Promasidor Nigeria Ltd, the manufacturer and marketing authorisation holder of Cowbell “Our Milk,” reported the existence of fake products closely resembling the genuine brand.

According to NAFDAC, the counterfeit versions unlawfully carry the Cowbell brand name, packaging design, NAFDAC registration number, and trademark.

The company confirmed that the packaging design used by the counterfeiters was last adopted by Promasidor in September 2023.

NAFDAC advised consumers to note key differences: the authentic Cowbell milk is creamy; the packaging now carries the revised PNG artwork “Our Creamy Goodness”; batch details are laser-printed; coding is done within a specific coding area on the sachet; and the sealing and cutting on the vertical sides are automated.

NAFDAC has warned that the counterfeit Cowbell 12g sachet milk does not resemble real milk and carries several telltale signs of fakery. The packaging uses the old PNG artwork “Our Milk,” batch details are printed with ink instead of laser, coding appears outside the designated area, and the vertical seals and cuts are manually done.

The agency cautioned that consuming the fake product poses serious health and safety risks.

“Such products may contain harmful substances, including toxic chemicals, unapproved additives, or diluted ingredients that fail to meet food safety standards.

NAFDAC has directed all zonal directors and state coordinators to intensify surveillance and remove the counterfeit Cowbell 12g sachets from circulation.

Distributors, retailers, and consumers were further urged to exercise caution within the supply chain, source food products only from licensed suppliers, and carefully verify the authenticity and physical condition of products before purchase.

“Healthcare professionals and consumers are advised to report any suspicion of sale of substandard and counterfeit food products to the nearest NAFDAC office, NAFDAC on 0800-162-3322 or via email: sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng

“Similarly, healthcare professionals and patients are also encouraged to report adverse events or side effects related to the use of counterfeited food products to the nearest NAFDAC office, or through the use of the E-reporting platforms available on the NAFDAC website www.nafdac.gov.ng or via e-mail on pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng,” it said.

BREAKING: Wike Allocates Abuja Old Parade Ground to APC for New Secretariat

by Folarin Kehinde August 22, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has allocated a section of Abuja’s historic Old Parade Ground to the All Progressives Congress (APC), effectively granting the party permanent ownership of the land without the multibillion-naira statutory charges normally required for such allocation.

The Old Parade Ground, designed at the inception of Abuja as a communal arena for Independence Day parades, cultural festivals, sports events, and political gatherings, has now been carved out for the ruling party.

According to official records, on August 8, 2025, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) excised a two-hectare portion of the parade ground, registered as Plot 4742 in Cadastral Zone A01, Garki District, and handed it to the APC.

On the same day, both the right of occupancy and the certificate of occupancy were issued, a process that usually takes years to complete.

The allocation documents specify that the land is to be developed into an office building within two years, indicating that it will serve as the ruling party’s new national secretariat.

Currently, the APC operates from its Muhammadu Buhari House in Wuse II, Abuja. The party acquired the building in 2021 at a cost of ₦2.5 billion and named it after former President Muhammadu Buhari.

However, President Bola Tinubu had, at the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on July 24, 2025, directed that a new, more befitting secretariat be constructed in Abuja.

“We’ll look for an appropriate land to build a befitting secretariat,” he said, tasking the APC National Working Committee, the Progressive Governors’ Forum, and the FCT Minister with identifying suitable land for the project.

Records show that the land premium was assessed at ₦6,000 per square metre, with an annual ground rent of ₦35 per square metre, amounting to about ₦120.6 million in premium charges for the 20,100-square-metre plot.

The speed at which the land was ceded to the APC has also been a concern. Land allocations in Abuja, it so understood typically drag on for months or even years due to backlogs and strict compliance procedures. But for the APC, both the right and certificate of occupancy were processed and issued in a single day, despite the non-payment of dues.

Since Tinubu made Wike minister in 2023, the former Rivers governor has made land allocation a defining feature of his administration, revoking titles, demolishing structures, and citing a commitment to restoring Abuja’s master plan. At the same time, he has been accused of directing prime allocations to allies, family members, and political associates under favourable terms.

No going back on Salary Increase for Tinubu, Other Political Office Holders – FG

by Folarin Kehinde August 21, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Government has insisted on going ahead with the review of salaries and allowances for President Bola Tinubu, state governors, lawmakers, and other political office holders, despite mounting public criticism.

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) on Thursday commenced a retreat in Kano to deliberate on a new remuneration framework for political, public, and judicial office holders across the federation.

In a statement at the opening session, Mohammed Kabeer Usman, Chairman of the Commission’s Remuneration and Monetisation Committee and Federal Commissioner representing Gombe State, defended the exercise as both constitutional and necessary.

He said the 1999 Constitution, as amended, empowers RMAFC to determine appropriate remuneration packages for political, public, and judicial office holders at all tiers of government, stressing that the review was informed by economic realities and comparative practices in other countries.

According to him, the commission had conducted wide consultations, including memoranda from stakeholders, ministerial submissions, and public hearings, before arriving at its recommendations. He added that the process was not only about numbers but also about ensuring sustainability and affordability for government finances.

“The commission has analysed the capacity of government to implement the review package, ensuring that recommendations remain fair, realistic, and sustainable,” he said.

The retreat also mandated the committee to harmonise previous reports and addenda into a single framework for implementation. Usman urged participants to deploy their expertise towards producing a balanced outcome that would strengthen governance.

Those present at the retreat included commissioners representing various states such as Adamu Fanda (Kano), Henry Nduka Awuregu, Aruviere Egharhevwa (Delta), Hassan Usman Mahmud (Kaduna), Hauwa Umar Aliyu (Jigawa), Professor Steve Davies Ugbah (Benue), Abdulazeez Idris King (Kogi), Aliyu Abdulkadir (Nasarawa), and Nathaniel Adojutelegan (Ondo), alongside the Committee Secretary and Director of Fiscal Efficiency, Dr Tanimu Adamu Aliyu.

After 30-day medical trip to the UK, Ganduje returns to Nigeria

by Folarin Kehinde August 21, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, on Wednesday, returned to Nigeria from London.

The former Kano State governor had travelled to the United Kingdom for medical treatment shortly after his controversial resignation as APC national chairman.

Confirming the development to The PUNCH, his former Chief of Staff, Mohammed Garba, said Ganduje arrived in the country in the early hours of Wednesday after spending about a month abroad.

“Yes, he is back in Nigeria today. He is full of life and has returned to his residence,” Garba stated.

He added that Ganduje departed Nigeria for London five days after stepping down from the party’s leadership to undergo medical care.

Ganduje, who became APC National Chairman in August 2023, had reportedly resigned on June 27, 2025, ostensibly over ill health.

He was subsequently inaugurated as the Chairman of the Board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria on July 9, while former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Netanwe Yilwatda, has since replaced him as the APC National Chairman.

Presidency Dismisses Empty Booth Saga At TICAD19 Japan

by Nelson Ugwuagbo August 21, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Presidency has refuted reports suggesting that Nigeria had an empty stand at the ongoing 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama, Japan.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga clarified that President Bola Tinubu’s delegation is attending the summit for high-level engagements, not for trade exhibitions.

According to him, the Nigerian team is concentrating on securing strategic partnerships in key sectors, including power, industry, and agriculture.

The clarification followed viral photos on social media showing an empty space marked “Nigeria,” which drew criticism from the public. Onanuga, however, described the reports as misleading.

“Nigeria is not participating as a trade exhibitor,” he said, adding that while some of the concerns were driven by patriotism, they reflected a misunderstanding of the country’s actual objectives at TICAD9.

Kano Govt To Sponsor Wedding For Repentant Bandits

by Nelson Ugwuagbo August 21, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Kano State Hisbah Board has unveiled plans to sponsor the weddings of repentant bandits as part of the government’s ongoing reintegration efforts.

Commander-General of Hisbah, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, disclosed this development after more than 1,000 youths surrendered their weapons and publicly renounced violence.

According to him, the initiative aligns with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s programme aimed at helping youths who have abandoned crime to build stable and decent lives.

“This programme is part of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s initiative to support youths who have turned away from crime and want to live a decent life,” Sheikh Daurawa said, while urging the youths to ensure their repentance was genuine. He also appealed to others still engaged in violence to embrace the opportunity.

At the event held at the Police Headquarters in Bompai, Governor Yusuf—represented by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya—stated that the police screening exercise marked the first stage of rehabilitation.

“After this, the NDLEA will also screen the youths to confirm the sincerity of their repentance,” the governor noted.

7,000 Nigerians stranded in Libya – NiDCOM

by Folarin Kehinde August 21, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has revealed that approximately 7,000 Nigerian migrants are currently stranded in Libya. Newspaper subscription bundles

Dabiri-Erewa stated this on Tuesday night during the official launch of the International Organisation for Migration Strategic Plan for Nigeria (2025–2027), held in Abuja.

She said: “As we speak, 7,000 Nigerians are stranded in Libya. In 2025, people still travel through the desert to die.”

MEANWHILE, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Nigeria has ranked Nigeria among the highest in the rate of irregular migration, saying that 70,000 irregular migrants have been returned to the country since it started operation in Nigeria in 2001.

Deputy Director-General, Operations at IOM, Ugochi Florence Daniels, revealed this when she paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, at her office in Abuja.

However, a statement, signed by Special Assistant on Communication and New Media, Office of the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Magnus Eze, quoted Daniels as saying that about 27,000 of them had been reintegrated into the society through its Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration Programme (AVRR) within the period.

She gave reassurance that the organisation would be dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for all migrants, as well as accelerating the transformative initiatives to reach the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including the Africa Union’s Agenda 2063.

Also speaking, Odumegwu-Ojukwu reiterated the Federal Government’s readiness to forge better collaboration with IOM in tackling the migration crisis, especially irregular migration.

She blamed the increasing spate of irregular migration, especially among the youths, on the myth of pursuing ‘greener pasture’ abroad, saying that the government sustained a campaign to dispel the myth.

The minister, therefore, acknowledged the longstanding cooperation between Nigeria and IOM in addressing concerns relating to vulnerable migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), while applauding IOM’s strategic direction to save lives, and facilitate pathways for regular migration.

Also, in view of the financial challenges currently facing the Organisation, the minister stressed the need to initiate and execute programmes that address the existential needs of persons of concern to IOM in line with national priorities.

She urged the Organisation to ensure harmonisation of activities with Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and other international organisations, advising the body to leverage its global status to engender novel financial partnership from non-traditional donors.
