World Day of Social Justice: NAS Calls for financial security against fraud

by Folarin Kehinde February 22, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

As Nigeria joins the World to Commemorate the 2021 World Day of Social Justice, the National Association of Seadogs (Pyrates Confraternity), Sahara Deck, Abuja has raised concern over the increasing rate of electronic financial fraud perpetrated by fraudsters within the country.

The Capoon, Sahara Deck, Mr. Victor Ofili in a statement over the weekend noted that electronic financial fraudsters operate at will due to insecurity in the system and lack of social justice for victims.

According to Mr. Victor, preventable loopholes such as insecurity, lack of enforcement and sufficient deterrent policies on the part of the government to ensure that financial institutions collaborate with security agencies in getting swift and decisive result in responding to cases of electronic financial fraud which is more often than not being exploited by fraudsters in a transactional process through registered bank accounts should be looked into in order to reduce the billions lost to fraudsters.

He added that in order to curb this menace, there should be a trusted and secured administrative system from the financial institutions in the country and other appropriate financial regulatory agencies on financial security for the benefit of the populace in an increasingly digital economy.

Speaking on the theme, A call for Social Justice for Digital Economy, he stated that of greater worry is the plight of the victims whose hard earned money are lost to financial fraud and are still denied social justice and compensation.

“The pervasiveness of this crime is nothing short of devastating to victims in a Nigerian polity where access to social justice is seen to be a herculean task.”

Mr. Victor thereby call on the government, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and other stakeholders in the financial sector to engage the public on sensitization and enlightenment programme at at nipping the menace to the bud.

“It is our wish that the Federal Capital Territory Authority (FCTA) takes the lead in curtailing this social menace by engaging the public in a developmental role geared towards public capacity building and sensitization program that will serve to enlighten the residents of the Federal Capital Territory of the pros and cons of the inadvertent migration to digital economy as the whole world and human relations are radically transformed to a more remotely day to day activities via online transactions
rather than physical contacts.”

He added that the association will continue to act as a watchdog over government policies and assist victims of social injustice in her quest to promote access to justice.

Greedy Investors Lament Loss in P/H as Ponzi Scheme who Promised 50% return disappears

by Folarin Kehinde February 15, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

Investors in a new Ponzi Scheme called “MONDELEX” got the shock of their lives on Thursday when they returned to the office to collect return on their investments, and found no one in the apartment.

The MONDELEX office around the Eliozu Flyover Axis of Portharcourt was found under lock and key when they arrived there. The telephone numbers of all the management team of the company also suddenly became unavailable.

According to report, MONDELEX had promised their investors 50% returns on their capital within two days of the investment.

The company was barely a week old in Portharcourt, Rivers State, but it had already gathered over two hundred investors, many of who invested more than two million naira each.

The company only received cash payments from investors, stressing that electronic transactions were restricted.

Meanwhile, most investors invested as high as 2.4 million naira while some were said to have put in about eight million naira.

Some of the aggrieved investors narrated their ordeal to THE WHISTLER.  Jerry Noble said he invested N200,000 and was expecting to come and receive N300,000 when he found out he had been duped.

“On getting here yesterday, I observed everywhere was crowded, I assumed maybe it’s because of the crowd that’s why they locked their office. I tried calling one of their staff I paid my money to, but his lines were off.

“I returned here today to see that the landlord of the place is even evacuating things. When I approached him he told me that the people he gave his property on lease happen to be scammers.”

The landlord of the apartment, one Mr. Benjamin, who responded to journalists questions, said: “I am deeply worried as angry investors have waited here for hours since Wednesday without any staff showing up. Most of the angry and aggrieved investors broke into the office and carted away some of the office equipment.

“Myself, wife and daughter also lost N300k to the scheme as I was deceived by the company when they came to rent my facility.

“When the man came, he said they were running a promotion for a company in town. They brought pictures of refrigerators, fans and generators that people will win. I was highly convinced. I started getting worried when crowd started coming here.

“When the company’s official lines were sent to DSS and tracked, they discovered that the MD and his team were already in Kogi State”.

NANS Backs Buhari on IGP Tenure Extension

by Folarin Kehinde February 15, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has supported President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to extend the tenure of the Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Adamu by three months.

President of the Association, Comrade Asefon Dayo while speaking in Abuja on Monday at a press briefing noted that the decision of President Buhari is in right direction considering the current state of insecurity in the country which presently need attention and a capable hand to salvage the situation.

According to Comrade Asefon, the Presidency decided to extend the tenure of the outgoing IGP after completing his mandatory years in service in order to search for a round peg in a round hole that will continue the unprecedented reforms been introduced into Nigeria Policing System by the versatile outgoing IGP in line of duty.
“The NANS leadership throws its weight behind the intention of the Presidency to extend the tenure of a performing IGP with focus in order to look a capable replacement that will continue the process of total reform of the Nigerian Police Force in their bid to maximally protect the citizenry in matured manners as obtainable in developed nations of the world”.

Highlighting the recent achievements of IGP Adamu which include the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and the sanity imposed on men of the Nigerian Police Force to respect human rights during the enforcement of the COVID-19 regulations, he said these giant strides cannot be forgotten so soon.

Reacting to a report by Sahara Reporters who alleged that the IGP paid N2 Billion for the tenure extension, Comrade Asefon noted that it is unpatriotic for anyone to maliciously attack this patriotic servitude to the country with the intent to tarnish his proven integrity as an effective officer of repute.

Similarly, Comrade Asefon said the student body detest the legal action being instituted by lawyers to truncate a smooth process of transition without considering the inherent benefits to the nation if its allowed its due course as Nigerians jointly involve in securing our nation with a responsive police reform and national servitude.

He thereby call on all to join hands together to build a better Nigeria by appreciating the concerted effort of the government even when we disagree with their approach and avoid any form of distraction.

CSO commends Operation Safe Haven over mass arrests of kidnappers, armed robbers, others

by Folarin Kehinde February 8, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

A plateau-based peace and advocacy group, after rising from its monthly peace and security meeting has commended the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Major General Lucky Irabor, on the new operational directive he gave to troops, Operation Accord 2, to ensure that criminal elements were denied freedom of action in Nigeria.

The coalition, operating under the aegis of Coalition of Plateau Peace and Security Advocates (COPPASA), said the unprecedented achievements of OPSH would not have been possible without the operational and professional capability of the Commander, whose leadership drive, it noted, has continued to spur troops to victory against enemies of state in the general area.

In a statement jointly signed by the National Coordinator, Dr. Bitrus Pwajok, and Secretary, Barr. Moses Deshi, the peace advocacy group urged Plateau indigenes and residents to continue to support the efforts of the military task force, to continue to rein-in criminal elements terrorising the state.

This was as they further eulogised the dynamic Governor of Plateau State, His Excellency, Rt.Hon. Simon Lalong, for his constant resolve to ensure peace and security, as seen in his logistical and other support to the military and other security agencies.

“We, the entire management and staff of COPPASA wish to commend the special military task force, OPSH, for its relentless onslaught against criminal elements in the state. This,no doubt, has enthroned the culture of peace and security in Plateau State. The People of the state are greatly enjoying from this now,”the statement read.

Going further, the group said:”This, no doubt, can be seen in the constant onslaught against armed bandits, kidnappers, gun runners, armed robbers as well as militiamen disturbing the peace and security of local communities and villages.

“Only recently, troops of OPSH rescued one Zawaria Mohammed from her abductor, who was kidnapped at a designated point for collection of N2 million ransom demanded from the victim’s husband.

“We also commend OPSH over the arrest of armed robbery suspects within the Rayfield general area of Jos, the Plateau State capital, and Dong village, with recovery of dangerous arms and ammunition by the gallant troops.

“Again, the killing of many armed robbery suspects operating along the Bida Bidi – Zaria road, deserves mention, at least to underscore the efforts by the task force on security to execute its mandate creditably”

Meanwhile, COPPASA has solicited more support from the governor, saying all hands must be on deck,to restore total peace to the Plateau.

“As citizens, we have to take our security seriously and not to leave it to the security agencies alone,”it charged, adding:”We know these criminals in our society and we should expose them before they come after us.”

“We can’t continue to condole criminals and then turn around to blame security agencies,”it said.

In the same vein, the coalition has called on criminal elements terrorising parts of the state to repent and surrender to the military, or leave the state.

“We cannot conclude without calling on all Plateau indigenes and residents to support the peace initiative of our able Governor, Rt.Hon. Simon Lalong and the troops of Operation Safe Haven, whose quest for a secure state is legendary.

“We urge His Excellency to continue in the direction he is moving, while ignoring his detractors, who are envious of his indelible achievements,”it added.

The group added:” As civil society organization working directly with farmers, herders and direct victims of conflicts for the past ten years in Plateau State,we make bold to say that 2020 remains the most peaceful year for farmers and herders in the state. This is inspite of some skirmishes caused by crisis merchants.”

It recalled that before, “Soldiers were not deployed to all the crisis hot spots to nip conflicts in the bud, rather, they were being seen in town harassing innocent citizens. This used to be the case at some point.”

According to the group, “We petition and protest against OPSH then, hence it will be morally wrong not to commend them when they have done so well.”
” Killings by unknown gunmen in our communities have drastically dropped to almost zero percent, farmers and herders have resumed full economic activities.

“We recall with regret that before now, some criminals whose livelihood depends on crises killed about five herders in Maiyanga, in Kwall District of Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.

“We urge Operation Safe Haven and other security agencies to investigate and arrest the perpetrators of this heinous act and bring them to book,” the group added.

Appeal to the Federal Ministry of Education to pay salaries of recruited teachers in unity schools

by Folarin Kehinde February 8, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

We are appealing to the Federal Ministry of Education led by Prof. Adamu Adamu to kindly look into the matter of the nonpayment of the unity schools teachers recruited within the period of 2018/2019.

Over a session has been completed with the full commitment of these teachers to their duty with no hope of IPPIS capturing needless to say payment insight.

We have worked for the past 2years without being paid a dine. The period of lockdown has really been gruesome for our families as there is no money to feed our family.

Many other ministries that recruited at the same time have been captured on IPPIS platform and have since been receiving their salaries.

We understand that teachers in few parts of the country were recently captured, whereas other teachers in the remaining parts of the country have been waiting in futility to be captured.

This delay in IPPIS capturing and the consequent nonpayment of our salaries have made life unbearable for us.

Please, we call on the Minister for Education, Prof. Adamu and the Permanent Secretary Arc. Echono to kindly help us resolve this issue so that our suffering and pain and that of our families can be alleviated. They lamented in tears.

Abducted PUNCH journalist regains freedom

by Folarin Kehinde February 8, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

A PUNCH journalist, Okechukwu Nnodim, who was abducted by gunmen on Wednesday night has regained his freedom.

Nnodim reunited with his family on Saturday night.

“I am back home. I am back,” Nnodim said on the telephone.

His wife, Oluchi, also confirmed the development on the telephone.

“My husband is back. I am happy. I thank you all for the support. God bless you all,” his excited wife said.

Nnodim was abducted from his house in the Arab road area of Kubwa, Abuja, on Wednesday night.

The kidnappers also attacked his neighbours and went away with the two sons of a widow, Mrs Faith Gbeyide.

It was learnt that the two neighbours have also regained their freedom.

Groups such as the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Federal Capital Territory chapter; the International Press Centre and the Media Rights Agenda among others had called for his immediate release.

Narrating the incident on Thursday, Nnodim’s wife, Oluchi, had explained that her husband was working on his laptop when five strange men scaled the fence and entered their compound while ordering them to open the door.

NUJ FCT calls for immediate release of kidnapped Punch reporter

by Folarin Kehinde February 5, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has called for the immediate release of Okechukwu Nnodim, a correspondent with the Punch Newspapers.

Nnodim was allegedly kidnapped by four gunmen in his Abuja home who gained access to his residence by scaling his fence after firing several gunshots in the air.

In a press statement released by the council Friday, jointly signed by Comrade Emmanuel Ogbeche and Ochiaka Ugwu, chairman and secretary, condemns the heinous act in totality and calls for the unconditional release of Nnodim for him to be reunited with his family and colleagues.

According to the statement, “It is unacceptable that a journalist is abducted and held for whatever reason. A fundamental pre-requisite for a free media is that journalists be allowed to move freely in their efforts to gather and transmit information.

“While condemning this heinous act in strong terms, we urge the kidnappers to release the journalist immediately, and charge the security agencies to do all they can to ensure that Nnodim and all those held by kidnappers and bandits are rescued while the perpetrators are brought to justice.

“It is time journalists stop being endangered species for doing their constitutional duties. It is unfortunate that other forms of harassment against the press are becoming frequent.

“It is worrying that journalists have been assaulted while covering events and several others have reported receiving threats over their work.

“As a council, we demand that immediate steps be taken to arrest this ugly development so that journalists can fulfill their constitutional mandate unhindered.”

Signed:

Emmanuel Ogbeche
Chairman of Council

Assets Forfeiture and Valuation: NIESV urges FG to include Professionals in determining market Price

by Folarin Kehinde February 5, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

The President and Chairman of National Council of the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV), ESV Emmanuel Wike has urged the Federal Government to include professional Estate Surveyors and valuers to determine the current market values on the forfeited properties and other assets.

It would be recall that recently, the Federal Government gave the Committee on Disposal of Forfeited Assets Six months to sell off properties in its possession.

Meanwhile, ESV Wike while speaking in Abuja on Wednesday commended the initiative as a step in the right direction especially at this time when Covid-19 pandemic has virtually grounded the global economy.

According to Wike, proceeds from the exercise will be a source of additional revenue for the country at this time that the revenue from crude oil which is the mainstay of the nation’s economy is abysmally low.

He however opined that considering the gloomy economy, the institution insisted that national interest must come before any other consideration in the execution of the initiative.

” We stated that, in the best interest of the country, professional Estate Surveyors and Valuers must prominently involved in driving and executing the lofty initiative”.

“The Institution reckons with the fact that the much desired change in Nigeria will come when the right professionals are fully engaged for services they are trained to perform”.

However, ESV Wike noted that the institution is willing and ready to partner with the Government through the committee in this assignment of national importance.

The Institution urges the Committee to discharge this very important national assignment with utmost dignity, transparency, fairness and responsibility in the interest of all Nigerians.

You risk death, foreign travel restriction if you reject COVID-19 vaccine, FG warns Nigerians

by Folarin Kehinde February 5, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, has warned that Nigerians who refuse to be vaccinated against COVID-19 risked dying from the virus or may be unable to travel out of the country without being inoculated.

Mustapha stated this while commissioning a COVID-19 isolation centre installed at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Tuesday.

The COVID-19 Presidential Task Force (PTF) chairman also spoke on the efficacy and safety of COVID-19 vaccines being procured by the Federal Government, saying ‘‘the vaccines are safe, effective and for our benefit.’’

The SGF said, ‘‘We will appeal and explain to our people that if you do not take the vaccine, the danger of falling terribly sick and eventually dying is there.

‘‘We will be blunt to them that if you don’t take the COVID-19 vaccine, you may not be able to go anywhere in the world, very soon. Even when you want to go and perform your spiritual obligation, that will be subjected to your COVID-19 status.’’

On conspiracy theories surrounding the vaccines, he said: ‘‘I don’t believe anyone will spend billions of dollars in manufacturing vaccines in order to kill us in Africa.’’

Also speaking during the commissioning, President Muhammadu Buhari’s Chief of Staff, Ibrahim Gambari, said it was important for Nigerians to take the vaccines to safeguard themselves.

‘‘The Latin says mens sana in corpore sano, a healthy mind in a healthy body. To keep your body healthy, you have to have a healthy mind and a healthy mind is what is necessary to keep you and your family safe,’’ said Gambari.

WTO D-G: The world can’t continue to fait for US says Okonjo- Iweala

by Folarin Kehinde February 5, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nigeria’s former Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has said the World cannot continue to wait for the United States to give a nod to her candidacy as the Director- General of the World Trade Organisation.

Okonjo- Iweala, who in October 2020 emerged as the WTO consensus candidate said this in a tweet via her official handle.

The 67- year old’s reaction comes three months after the US blocked her appointed as the D-G of the largest multilateral trade block.

The former World Bank Managing Director fell out of the favour of the ex- US President, Donald Trump who favoured South Korea’s candidate, Yoo Myung-hee.

Yoo Myung-hee later dropped out of the race in November last year after the ex- finance minister secured 164 votes.

Trump’s move to block the Nigerian was over issues with China as the US has accused the Asian giant of unfair trade practice at the WTO.

But Scott Morris, US former senior official in the US Treasury during the Obama administration had in an opinion on Tuesday published by The Hills called for the Joe Biden administration to join the consensus.

He said, “The question is not whether Okonjo-Iweala alone will be tough on China. It is whether the administration will embrace the consensus pick in a manner that strengthens the U.S. position in this critical multilateral forum, or whether it will carry forward a damaging legacy of the previous administration by snubbing the will of America’s allies.”

The Center for Global Development on Tuesday also supported the opinion put out by Morris on the urgency to address the hanging issue at the WTO.

Okonjo- Iweala reacting said, it was time to support the WTO focus on more important issues bordering the world in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The ex- Finance Boss said, “Thank you @Morris_ScottA and @CGDev for this timely commentary. WTO is important to global public health  and recovery from the pandemic. Ditto with global economic recovery. Time to support @wto to get to work on important global issues. The world cannot continue to wait.

Okonjo- Iweal who is the current Chair, Board of Gavi, had last month expressed optimism that the Biden administration would join the consensus.
