Imo government rescues widow forced to drink water used to bathe husband’s corpse

by Folarin Kehinde October 27, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Imo State Government has rescued a widow, Mrs. Chika Ndubuisi, from the hands of her husband’s kinsmen who forced her to drink from the water used in bathing the corpse of her husband to prove her innocence over his death.

The incident, which took place at Awo-Omamma in Oru East LGA of the state, attracted the attention of the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare through an alarm raised by a women advocacy group that exposed the action of the said kinsmen.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner in charge of the Ministry, Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu, condemned the action, which she described as an inhuman widowhood practice that has become outdated.

The Commissioner expressed shock that such a practice still exists in the present-day society, where a widow, who is already undergoing the trauma of losing her husband, would be coerced by her late husband’s kinsmen to partake in a ritual involving drinking from the water used in bathing his corpse.

She frowned at the act, describing it as barbaric, cruel, and completely unacceptable in a civilized society.

In her reaction, the wife of the state governor, Chioma Uzodinma, directed that an immediate and comprehensive investigation be carried out to ensure that those responsible face the full weight of the law.

According to our correspondent, the widow, who was detained with her husband’s corpse, was accused by her in-laws of being responsible for his death.

Her husband’s family, as it was gathered, allegedly tried to compel her to drink from the water to prove her innocence, but the swift intervention of the Commissioner, the Local Council Authority of the area, and security agencies halted the attempt following the alerts raised by the women’s group.

Lady Ugwu informed that the Ministry’s action, in collaboration with the Chairman of the Local Council and some Non-Governmental Organisations, facilitated the rescue of the widow and her children, as she confirmed that some arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

“Normalcy has been restored, and a detailed investigation is underway. Mrs. Ndubuisi and her children are under government protection,” the Commissioner added.

JUST IN: National Assembly Approves Creation of 6 New States

by Folarin Kehinde October 27, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nigeria is set to have six new states as the National Assembly joint committee on Constitutional Review has approved the proposal for their creation.

The approval was one of the major outcomes of a two-day retreat held in Lagos, jointly chaired by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu.

A unanimous decision was reached by the committee after reviewing 55 separate requests for state creation from across the country.

The lawmakers also considered 69 bills, two boundary adjustment proposals, and 278 requests for new local government areas during the retreat.

According to the joint committee, one new state will be created in each of the six geopolitical zones: North West, North East, North Central, South West, South East, and South South.

If the recommendation sails through all constitutional processes, Nigeria’s number of states will rise from 36 to 42.

Speaking during the session, Senator Barau Jibrin noted that the committee’s decision followed years of consultations, engagements, and public hearings involving citizens, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders.

“We have been in this process for the past two years, engaging our constituents, critical stakeholders, institutions, civil society organisations and interest groups in town hall meetings, interactive sessions and public hearings, harvesting and synthesising views and perspectives which has ultimately culminated in what we have here today – 69 bills, 55 state creation requests, two boundary adjustments and 278 local government creation requests,” he said.

However, the proposal is expected to be forwarded to the full chambers of the National Assembly for deliberation and possible constitutional amendment.

If approved, the geopolitical balance across the country would be altered, giving each region at least six states.

BREAKING: Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor Collapses In Kuje Prison

by Folarin Kehinde October 26, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Aloy Ejimakor, Special Counsel to detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, has collapsed while in custody at the Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja.

This development is happening barely 24 hours after the presiding magistrate, Abubakar Umar Sai’id, allegedly refused to sign his bail bond for release.

Ejimakor was said to have slumped after complaining of weakness and difficulty standing.

Prison medical staff rushed to attend to him. His condition is believed to be getting worse, and authorities are considering transferring him to a hospital for urgent care.

Ejimakor is among 13 individuals arrested earlier in the week during the “#FreeNnamdiKanuNow” protest. Those arrested also include Nnamdi Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu.

They were reportedly tear-gassed, beaten, and taken into custody before being moved to the notorious SARS detention facility known as “Abattoir”.

On Tuesday, they were taken to the Kuje Magistrate Court without their legal team present. The magistrate ordered their remand, and despite granting bail the following day, he allegedly disappeared without endorsing the bail documents.

Human rights activists have since raised concerns over the treatment of the lawyer and others arrested, accusing security agencies of intimidation and abuse of power.

However, lawyers and supporters are demanding immediate medical attention and full respect for their legal rights.

Alleged Coup: Tinubu Appoints Yoruba Officer as New CDS

by Folarin Kehinde October 24, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nigerians have expressed strong reactions following the removal of Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and other top service chiefs, barely a week after reports emerged of an alleged plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s government.

In a statement by Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, General Musa was confirmed to have been replaced by General Olufemi Oluyede, who hails from Ekiti State.

The shake-up has sparked widespread debate on social media, with many Nigerians linking the dismissals to the alleged coup attempt.

X user, @IkukuomaC, noted, “The sacking of service chiefs can only mean one thing — the coup attempt was real. Now he switched his CDS to a Yoruba officer… Interesting times.

User @Its_Olayinnka tweeted, “The rumour about the coup was true then. This is a very good development! We cannot have another military rule.”

Similarly, @Ohamadikae wrote, “This means the coup rumours weren’t false! For the first time, I’m pleased with President Tinubu’s choice. Baba, safeguard your loins. Despite our political differences, your safety matters and democracy must thrive.”

However, others expressed scepticism over the suddenness of the changes, suggesting that more may be occurring behind the scenes.

@djokaymegamixer commented, “There is absolutely nothing wrong with exercising presidential powers. After all, that is what presidents do.

“The real curiosity here is what suddenly inspired this burst of executive energy. Was there a midnight revelation or a nudge from somewhere we’re not supposed to mention? When things happen this abruptly, there is usually a juicy backstory waiting to drop.”

Opinions on the implications for national security were also divided. While some Nigerians viewed the shake-up as a reinforcement of democratic resilience, others raised concerns about military stability.

@Chridtian_1994 remarked, “That means there was indeed a coup attempt. It’s time to surround himself with his fellow tribesmen, but what he always misses is that all men love power, and when it’s time to seize it, they will do so irrespective of tribe or religion.”

BREAKING: Court grants Sowore, Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, 11 others #6.5m bail

by Folarin Kehinde October 24, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

A Magistrate’s Court sitting in Kuje, Abuja, has granted bail to publisher and activist Omoyele Sowore, alongside Aloy Ejimakor, one of the lawyers representing the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, as well as Kanu’s brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, and ten others.

The court, on Friday, ordered that all thirteen defendants be released on bail in the sum of ₦500,000 each, with two sureties in like sum.

They were arrested and arraigned for allegedly inciting public disturbance and breaching public peace during the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest held in Abuja on Monday, October 20, 2025.

According to reports, while Ejimakor, Emmanuel Kanu, and the other ten defendants were apprehended during the protest and subsequently remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre, Sowore was arrested later on October 23, at the premises of the Federal High Court in Abuja, where he had attended Kanu’s terrorism trial to show solidarity.

The activist’s arrest sparked widespread reactions, with several political figures and civil rights groups condemning what they described as an attempt to stifle peaceful dissent.

Among those who criticised the arrest were former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and some northern advocacy groups, who called for restraint and respect for citizens’ constitutional rights to peaceful protest.

The court’s decision to grant bail has been welcomed by supporters of the defendants, who view it as a reaffirmation of judicial independence and a step towards ensuring fairness in politically sensitive cases.

Further proceedings in the matter are expected to continue as the police carry out additional investigations into the circumstances surrounding the protest and the alleged offences.

BREAKING: Nnamdi Kanu’s Lead Counsel Resigns from Trial

by Folarin Kehinde October 23, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The lead counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), has withdrawn from representing him in court.

Agabi told the Federal High Court in Abuja that the defendant had decided to take back control of his case, leading to the withdrawal of all the Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) who were part of the defence team.

Confirming the development, Kanu told the court that he would represent himself for now. When the presiding judge asked if he wanted a lawyer to be assigned to him, Kanu politely declined, saying he would continue on his own.

During the proceedings, Kanu argued orally that the court had no jurisdiction to try him. He maintained that his continued detention and trial were politically motivated and unconstitutional.

The development comes amid renewed tension over Kanu’s case. LEADING REPORTERS gathered that earlier this month, security operatives dispersed protesters in Abuja who were demanding his release. According to reports, the police fired tear gas and arrested several demonstrators near the court premises.

In recent rulings, the court had also rejected some evidence presented by the Federal Government, saying the statements were obtained without legal representation for Kanu.

Kanu’s decision to dismiss his lawyers marks another dramatic turn in his long-running legal battle with the Nigerian government.

Ex-NNPC boss loses US property to court over $2.1m bribery case

by Folarin Kehinde October 23, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

A United States District Court has ordered the interim forfeiture of a California property belonging to Paulinus Okoronkwo, a Nigerian-American and former General Manager of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), now NNPC Limited, after finding he acquired it with proceeds of bribery.

The ruling, issued by Judge John Walter on October 3, followed Okoronkwo’s September conviction on charges of transactional money laundering, tax evasion, and obstruction of justice.

Prosecutors alleged that Okoronkwo received a $2.1 million bribe from Addax Petroleum, a Switzerland-based subsidiary of China’s state-owned Sinopec, in exchange for granting favourable drilling rights in Nigeria during his time at NNPC.

According to U.S. court documents, the payment made in October 2015 was wired to Okoronkwo’s law firm trust account in Los Angeles and disguised as consultancy fees.

Investigations, however, revealed the funds were bribes facilitated by Addax executives who allegedly falsified records, misled auditors, and dismissed staff who questioned the transaction.

Prosecutors further told the court that Okoronkwo, who practiced immigration, family, and personal injury law in Koreatown, Los Angeles, used nearly $1 million of the illicit funds as a down payment on a luxury home in Valencia, California. He also failed to declare the income in his 2015 tax returns, violating U.S. tax laws.

The forfeiture order covers the property located at 25340 Twin Oaks Place, Valencia, California 91381, described as Tract Number 45433, Lot 12, with Assessor’s Parcel Number 2826-143-004. The court found a “clear nexus” between the property and the crimes listed in Counts 1 through 3 of the indictment, which involved money laundering in violation of 18 U.S.C. §1957.

In its judgment, the court ruled that “any right, title, and interest of the defendant” in the Valencia property “is hereby forfeited to the United States.” It also authorized the U.S. Attorney General or a designee to seize the property pursuant to federal forfeiture laws.

The U.S. government has since published a public notice calling on any individual with a legitimate claim or interest in the property to file a petition within 60 days of the announcement.

Okoronkwo’s sentencing hearing has been scheduled for December 1, where he faces potential prison time and further financial penalties. The case has drawn attention in both Nigeria and the U.S., spotlighting renewed international efforts to combat corruption in the oil and gas sector and trace illicit financial flows across borders.

If upheld, the forfeiture will mark another major U.S. enforcement action targeting foreign bribery linked to Nigeria’s oil industry an ongoing challenge for authorities seeking to recover assets looted through corporate and political corruption.
