Billionaire businessmen Femi Otedola and Aliko Dangote have joined prominent figures backing Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Otedola disclosed his support for Hamzat in a post on his X account on Monday, recounting their longstanding relationship dating back to their boarding school days nearly five decades ago.
The businessman said he hosted a dinner in honour of Hamzat, who emerged as the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for Lagos State in the 2027 election.
“Yesterday, I hosted dinner in honour of @DrObafemiHamzat, the incoming Governor of Lagos State. A man of the highest integrity, with whom I shared a bunk bed at boarding school 49 years ago,” Otedola wrote.
He described Hamzat as a man of integrity, citing his honesty, sincerity, fairness and strong moral principles as qualities that had defined their relationship over the years.
The dinner attracted prominent business figures, including Dangote and BUA Group Chairman Abdul Samad Rabiu.
Hamzat secured the APC governorship ticket in May after emerging victorious in the party’s Lagos State primary.
According to the announced results, he polled 657,917 votes to defeat his challenger, Olanrewaju Jim-Kamal, who received one vote.
The deputy governor is now set to represent the ruling party in the contest to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, whose tenure is due to end in 2027.
