BREAKING: Tinubu sacks Edun, appoints Oyedele as Finance Minister

by Folarin Kehinde April 21, 2026
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a minor cabinet reshuffle, effecting changes in the membership of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) with the exit of two ministers and the appointment of replacements.

The decision, conveyed in a memo signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, directed the immediate redeployment of portfolios to strengthen governance delivery.

According to a statement issued by Special Adviser to the SGF on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, Mr. Wale Edun has been relieved of his duties as Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy under the reshuffle.

He is to hand over to Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, who has now been elevated to the position from his previous role as Minister of State in the ministry.

Similarly, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, is to exit the cabinet, with the President naming Dr. Muttaqha Rabe Darma as ministerial nominee and minister-designate for the ministry.

The directive also mandates that Dangiwa hand over to the Minister of State in the ministry, pending Darma’s confirmation and assumption of office.

According to the memo, all handover and takeover processes are to be completed by close of business on Thursday, April 23, 2026.

Explaining the rationale for the changes, Akume said the reshuffle was designed to “strengthen cohesion, synergy in governance as well as achieve more impactful delivery on the economy to Nigerians, through the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

He added that the President exercised his constitutional powers under Sections 147 and 148 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) in effecting the changes.

The President expressed appreciation to the outgoing ministers for their service to the nation and wished them success in their future endeavours.

Akume further conveyed the President’s assurance to cabinet members that the process of reinvigorating the government would be continuous and in line with the administration’s policy objectives.

Finance Minister Wale Edun Flown to UK for Medical Treatment

by Folarin Kehinde October 15, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has reportedly travelled to the United Kingdom for medical treatment.

This development comes after the Presidency earlier announced that Edun was receiving treatment at his home in Abuja and might seek further medical attention abroad if necessary.

According to multiple sources who confirmed the development on Tuesday, the minister has now left the country. One of the sources said, “It’s true, he has left already.”

Edun was said to have departed Abuja for Lagos on Monday night via a commercial flight before boarding a British Airways flight to London later that night.

In an earlier statement, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, explained that the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso, would lead the economic team in Edun’s absence, as the minister was “indisposed.”

There had been widespread rumours claiming that Edun suffered a stroke and was flown abroad for treatment, but the Presidency has since denied those reports.

Presidential aides maintained that Edun, a key member of President Bola Tinubu’s economic team, is recuperating and in good spirits.

Finance minister not affected by stroke, as presidency speaks on replacement

by Folarin Kehinde October 13, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Presidency has dismissed claims that plans are underway to replace the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Presidency explained that Edun is currently recuperating at his Abuja residence after falling ill, debunking rumours that he suffered a stroke or was flown abroad for treatment.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that the minister is receiving medical care in Nigeria.

“Yes, he’s indisposed. Wale Edun is about 69 years old. He suddenly fell ill. As we speak, he’s in Nigeria, recuperating,” Onanuga said.

The clarification followed reports suggesting that President Tinubu was considering replacing the minister amid concerns about his health.

Earlier, the Presidency had announced that Edun would not attend this year’s World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C., with the Central Bank Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, leading Nigeria’s delegation instead.

The meetings, which bring together global finance ministers, central bankers, and economic experts, are scheduled to begin on Monday, October 14.

Appointed on August 28, 2023, Edun has been a key figure in President Tinubu’s economic reform agenda, driving efforts to stabilise the naira, curb inflation, and attract foreign investment.

Crisis brews as Tinubu’s Minister, Wale Edun Transfers Social Investment Programmes From Humanitarian Affairs Ministry To Finance

by Folarin Kehinde March 4, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Minister of finance, Wale Edun, has relocated the National Social Investment Programmes (NSIPs) from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation to the Ministry of Finance and Coordinating Economy, SaharaReporters reliably learnt.

SaharaReporters further gathered that a panel hurriedly set up by the minister recommended that the programmes should be resumed to alleviate the sufferings of poor and vulnerable Nigerians but that a new board under the leadership of Edun should oversee the social investment programmes, according to a top document exclusively obtained.

Titled: “Interim Report Of The Special Presidential Panel On Social Investment Programmes,” the paper recommended that a steering committee/board under the leadership of the Hon. Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy to oversee the coordination of programmes should be convened.

“Determine the future of the NSIPA by advocating for a proper review and amendment of the NSIPA act.”

It is not clear if President Bola Tinubu is aware of the minister’s moves.

SaharaReporters gathered that the move by Edun has ignited controversy, especially in light of President Tinubu’s earlier directive that the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation should be in charge of the NSIPs.

Following the suspension of the humanitarian minister, Beta Edu, the previous overseer, the decision to shift NSIP to the Ministry of Finance and Coordinating Economy is raising concerns among critics.

Government officials fear that the move may lead to significant changes within the programmes, potentially involving the dissolution of the current board, removal of state coordinators, and the appointment of new leaders.

One of the concerned officials told SaharaReporters anonymously: “This is not a good move. The social investment programmes are currently domiciled in the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

“They are implemented by the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA) by law.

“The executive bill sent by the Muhammadu Buhari administration to the national assembly, placed the NSIPA, which is in charge of these social programmes, in the federal ministry of humanitarian affairs and poverty alleviation.

“A bill would have to be sponsored to amend the principal act.

“Anything outside of that is illegal and against the laws setting up the NSIPA.”
