Labour Party denies ‘Agreement’ with Tinubu over 2027 Presidency

by Folarin Kehinde November 22, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Labour Party (LP) has denied reports that the party leadership is partnering with President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.

The reports alleged that the LP has agreed with Tinubu to deliver his second term if he decides to contest.

However, in a statement released on Friday, the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Mr. Obiora Ifoh, dismissed the claims as baseless and unfounded.

Ifoh said the party has consistently denied allegations of any partnership or collaboration with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“As a matter of fact, the Labour Party is the most visible opposition party today, and our National Chairman, Barrister Abure, is the leading voice in the opposition camp, consistently criticizing the present government,” Ifoh stated.

Ifoh also highlighted the party’s efforts to reposition itself and deepen participatory democracy in Nigeria. He noted that the party has established an Electoral Reform Committee to promote credible, fair, and transparent electoral processes. Additionally, the party has introduced e-membership registration, which has attracted thousands of subscribers.

“All these efforts to reposition the party, for someone to be demarketing such a party in such an unguarded and callous manner, is most ridiculous and unfortunate.

“We are therefore challenging Deji Adeyanju and any other person to come up with facts and proofs that either the party leadership or Mr. Abure intends to work for President Bola Tinubu or his party, the APC in the 2027,” he stated.

BREAKING: Tinubu writes Senate, seeks confirmation of Oluyede as Chief of Army Staff

by Folarin Kehinde November 22, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Tinubu has sent a letter to the Senate seeking confirmation of Lieutenant General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede’s appointment as the substantive Chief of Army Staff.

Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s spokesman, revealed this in a statement on Friday, November 22.

He said President Tinubu is seeking Oluyede’s confirmation by the provision of Section 218(2) of the 1999 Constitution as amended and Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act.

President Tinubu appointed Oluyede as the Acting Chief of Army Staff on October 30 following the illness of Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja. General Lagbaja, however, died on 5 November.

“President Tinubu is confident about the leadership qualities, professional integrity, and experience of Lt. General Oluyede to lead and inspire the army to ensure national security and stability,” Onanuga stated.

Before he was appointed Acting Chief of Army Staff, Oluyede, a member of the 39th Regular Course, like his predecessor, served as the 56th Commander of the elite Infantry Corps of the Nigerian Army, based in Jaji, Kaduna.

He was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1992, effective from 1987. He rose to Major-General in September 2020. Since his commissioning as an officer, Oluyede has held many command positions.

Tinubu names Onanuga, Bwala, Dare joint spokespersons

by Folarin Kehinde November 20, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Tinubu has reassigned the roles of two recently appointed officials in the State House media and communications team to improve the efficiency of the government’s communication operations.

In the new reassignment of roles, three Special Advisers are to serve as joint spokespersons for the Bola Tinubu-led administration.

The Special Advisers includes Bayo Onanuga, Sunday Dare and Daniel Bwala.

As part of the reorganization, Sunday Dare, formerly the Special Adviser on Public Communication and National Orientation, has been appointed as the Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications. Meanwhile, Daniel Bwala, who previously served as the spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar’s Presidential Campaign Council, has been named the Special Adviser on Policy Communication.

This was contained in a statement by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Monday, November 19.

The statement reads: “President Bola Tinubu has re-designated the positions of two recently appointed officials in the State House media and communications team to enhance efficiency within the government’s communication machinery.

“The restructuring is as follows: Mr Sunday Dare – hitherto Special Adviser on Public Communication and National Orientation is now Special Adviser, Media and Public Communications.

“Mr Daniel Bwala – announced last week as Special Adviser, Media and Public Communication, is now Special Adviser, Policy Communication.

“These appointments, along with the existing role of Special Adviser, Information and Strategy, underscore that there is no single individual spokesperson for the Presidency.

“Instead, all the three Special Advisers will collectively serve as spokespersons for the government.

“This approach aims to ensure effective and consistent communication of government policies, decisions, and engagements.”

Tinubu seeks approval for fresh N1.77trn loan

by Folarin Kehinde November 19, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Tinubu has asked the National Assembly to approve fresh N1.767trn external borrowing plan in support of the 2024 Budget.

The president conveyed his request in a letter written to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas.

The presiding officers read the letter during plenary, on Tuesday.

The president said if approved, the loan would be used to partly finance the N9.7trn deficit in the 2024 budget.

He said his request, which has been approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), aligns with Section 21(1) and 27(1) of the Debt Management Office Act.

Tinubu has also forwarded the Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper (MTEF/FSP) 2025-2027 to the National Assembly and the National Social Investment Programme Establishment Amendment Bill, to make the social register the primary tool for the implementation of the federal government’s social welfare programmes.

The Federal Government had approved a $2.2billion external borrowing plan last week.

The president’s letter outlined three potential financing options to raise the required funds which include issuance of Eurobonds, Sovereign Sukuk and Bridge Finance/Syndicated Loans.

On Eurobonds, he said Nigeria could raise all or part of the funds through Eurobond sales in the International Capital Market (ICM).

President Tinubu noted that the ICM remains accessible to countries like Nigeria, citing recent issuances by Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, and Cameroon in 2024.

written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Tinubu on Friday conferred a post-homous award of the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) on the late Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja.

He made the declaration during the interment in honour of the late warrior at the National Cemetery in Mogadishu, Abuja.

The President extoled the virtues of the late warrior, eulogising his contributions to national security.

According to Tinubu, the appointment of Lagbaja as the COAS was one of his finest made so far.

The event had in attendance Vice President Kashima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Defence Minister, governors and top military officials.

Last week, Tinubu announced Lagbaja’s death, saying the late warrior passed away in Lagos after a period of illness.

Born on February 28, 1968, Lagbaja served as the Chief of Army Staff for one year and four months. President Tinubu appointed him to the role in June 2023.

He played pivotal roles in numerous internal security operations, including Operation ZAKI in Benue State, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Udoka in Southeast Nigeria, and Operation Forest Sanity across Kaduna and Niger States.

50kg bag of rice hits N100,000 as hardship bites harder under Tinubu

by Folarin Kehinde November 14, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

There seems to be no end in sight to hike in food prices driven largely by the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu.

A survey by Peoples Gazette on Tuesday, showed that the price of a 50 kilogram rice, a staple mostly consumed by households in Nigeria, has crossed the N100,000 mark.

According to the survey, Caprice now goes for N123,500, Disney Princess N102,000, Saelony N110,000, Big Bull N113,000, Mamas Pride N114,000, while Tomato Gold is N148,500.

Meanwhile, consumers have recently started becoming familiar with Big Bull sachet rice which costs N300, although N200 was inscribed on the pack, indicating a recent price increase.

Experts linked the high cost of commodities in the country to weak naira, which according to the FMDQ Exchange, as of November 12, 2024, slipped to an all-time low of ₦1689.88 at the official Investor and Exporter window.

They also identified the continued increase in fuel price by the Tinubu government which prior to assumption of office on May 29, 2023, was ₦175 per litre. But it is now N1,030 as of the last hike in October 2024, representing almost a 500 per cent increase within the period.

The development negated the campaign promise of Mr Tinubu in Ogun State to reduce slash petrol pump price if elected.

BREAKING: “Be wary of Wike, he wants to contest in 2027” – Rivers LGA chair tells Tinubu

by Folarin Kehinde November 14, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The chairman of Obio Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, Chijioke Ihunwo, has warned President Bola Tinubu to be wary of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister, Nyesom Wike.

Ihunwo stated this while addressing journalists in his office on Thursday, November 14.

His words: “Wike has plans to run for president in 2027. Mr. President should be wary about Wike.

“His plan is to tell the president that ‘I want to remain in PDP, let me hold the structure for you.’ There, he will be doing follow-up on how to succeed the president.

“He did it to Amaechi, so he can do it to anybody. That’s his style. So, I want to appeal to the president to be very wary of Wike, minister of the FCT”

Reclaim Oyo in 2027 – Tinubu charges APC members

by Folarin Kehinde November 12, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has advised chieftains and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State to close ranks and work together in order to reclaim the state in 2027.

He noted that the state is too important to be missing among the progressive fold.

Tinubu, who was represented by the Minister of Power, Mr. Adebayo Adelabu, made this assertion during the maiden edition of Lam Adesina annual lecture held in Ibadan, the state capital on Monday.

The event was attended by former governors of Ekiti State, Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo and Dr Kayode Fayemi, Senator Teslim Folarin, Senator Abdulfatai Buhari, Chief Iyiola Oladokun, Chief Alake Adeyemo and the APC Chairman in the state, Alhaji Olayide Abas.

Others are the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Apostle Sunday Popoola, Senator Olufemi Lanlehin, Barrister Bayo Shittu, Engr. Rauf Olaniyan, Elder Wole Oyelese, Hon. Aderemi Oseni, Sen. Adesoji Akanbi, Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, Chief Akin Oke and Professor Adeolu Akande.

Leading reporters reports that Adesina was the governor of the state between May 1999 and May 2003.

The APC lost the state to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2019 and 2023 general elections.

The minister noted that the best way to honor the former governor is to ensure that the leaders of the party work as one in a bid to reclaim the state in the next elections.

He said, “Lam Adesina stood for high democratic ideals that underpin the democratic system of government. Ideals that are essential for ensuring that power is held by the people, either directly or through elected representatives.

Senate reveals date for Tinubu’s 2025 budget presentation to National Assembly

by Folarin Kehinde November 11, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nigeria’s 2025 budget presentation to the National Assembly could be postponed until December 2024, with no clear timeline set by the executive.

As of early November, essential documents such as the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) have yet to be submitted, a significant delay compared to previous years when these documents were typically ready by October.

The budget estimates were presented in previous administrations by the first week of October, following the National Assembly’s review of the MTEF and FSP.

However, this year’s delay in submitting these key fiscal documents has raised concerns, with the process already running behind schedule.

Senator Sani Musa, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, clarified that President Bola Tinubu’s administration determines the timing of the 2025 budget presentation.

“The decision lies with the executive, not the National Assembly,” Musa said.

He explained that the National Assembly had recently engaged with figures like the Minister of Finance and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPCL) CEO to discuss the performance of the 2024 budget.

“They are working on the 2025 budget, and once completed, it will be forwarded to us,” he added.

While the delay in submitting the MTEF, which outlines critical fiscal parameters such as oil price benchmarks, exchange rates, and inflation projections, has raised concerns, Finance Minister Wale Edun remains optimistic.

“The economy is taking good shape, and we see positive indicators,” he remarked following a recent interactive session.

Senator Musa also noted a reduction in Nigeria’s debt-to-GDP ratio as a sign of ongoing economic reforms. He assured the public that significant improvements would materialise within 16 to 18 months.

The delay in presenting the 2024 budget resulted in its late passage, and President Tinubu signed it into law on January 1, 2024. As the executive branch finalises the 2025 budget, the National Assembly will be ready to scrutinise the document once it is submitted.
