Former presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso have formally joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), urging party members to shun litigation and prioritise national development.
The opposition figures made the appeal on Sunday in Abuja during their official reception into the party, amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi announced his defection shortly after confirming his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which he joined in December.
Speaking at the event, Obi said their decision to align with the NDC was motivated by the need for a stable and crisis-free political platform.
He pledged commitment to building a united, secure, and prosperous Nigeria, adding that the new platform would prioritise inclusiveness and opportunities for all citizens.
Obi also commended Kwankwaso’s contributions to education, healthcare, and poverty reduction, noting that both leaders share a vision of creating a country where merit, rather than connections, determines success.
The former Anambra State governor further appealed to the current administration to refrain from actions that could destabilise opposition parties.
He accused the government of contributing to internal crises within opposition platforms, which he said had led to persistent legal battles and forced repeated defections.
According to Obi, efforts to find stability in previous parties were unsuccessful due to unresolved disputes and ongoing litigation.
He expressed optimism that the NDC would remain free of such challenges, urging stakeholders to preserve unity and avoid legal conflicts in the interest of strengthening democracy.
