Army Refuses to Reinstate Officer who Killed over 200 Boko Haram in 5 Hours

by Folarin Kehinde October 28, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

Despite court judgements and interventions of the national assembly, the Nigerian Army has adamantly refused to reinstate Lt Colonel Mohammed Abdulfatai who led troops in the elimination of over 200 Boko Haram terrorists in a Konduga Operation in 2014.

Lt. Col. Abdulfatai was among the 38 senior officers who were in June 2016 unlawfully retired by Army authority in flagrant disregard to the rules of engagement in the military.

On 14 January 2020, Justice Rukiya Hasstrup at National Industrial Court (NIC), Abuja described the compulsory retirement of Abdulfatai as wrongful, unconstitutional, null and void adding: “the Army failed to act with respect to the law.”

Also in May 2020, Justice Edith Agbakogba granted permission that contempt of court charge be filed against the military chiefs over the alleged refusal to comply with a valid order of the court reinstating Lt Colonel Abdulfatai.

Abdulfatai was the Commanding Officer of 195 Battalion at the height of the insurgency in 2014 – 2015 in the Northeast when Boko Haram was seizing territories. He was the Commanding Officer of 195 Battalion stationed at Konduga alongside troops of 103 Battalion.

It was gathered that after the fall of Gwoza, Bama, and Kawuri, Abdulfatai led his men to defeat 8 full-scale successive attacks by Boko Haram in their quest to advance into Maiduguri, as the Konduga was the last standing location on the axis hindering their planned advance into the capital city.

He earned a commendation for gallantry for the defeat of Boko Haram during the aggressive counterattack lasting five hours and where over 200 of the insurgents were killed and many others injured.

The impressive defence of Konduga by Abdulfatai’s troops prompted the then Chief of Army Staff, General Kenneth Minimah to send them special gifts while the then Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State paid a thank-you visit to the location.

In a letter of Commendation, the then Commander 26 Taskforce Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Konduga, Brigadier General (now serving Major General) DH Ali-Keffi wrote that: “On the night of December 1-2, 2014, the defensive position of Task Force Brigade and 21 Brigade which formed the covering force of 7 Division in Konduga front came under Boko Haram Attack.

“The assault was preceded by sustained bombardment for about one hour in which anti-aircraft guns and other heavy calibre weapons were fired at own position followed by six waves of ground offensive utilising vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs) among other assets.

“At the end of the battle, Boko Haram Terrorists (BHT)suffered heavy casualties over 200 estimated killed and a great deal; more injured as attested by strewn corpses and trails of bloodstains all over the battlefield.

“The troops of the two Brigades put up a remarkable performance as only one soldier was killed. The victory achieved was to a large extent attributable to the gallantry exhibited by the troops, top of which was by you (Lt Abdulfatai).

I observed all through the encounter how you professionally handled the forward troops, which was the main focus of the Boko Haram offensive. Throughout the period, you gave firm and effective orders over the radio which ensured that the troops in the trenches, as well as the armoured vehicles, were well-positioned to meet any and every BHT onslaught.

“You equally employed the artillery and mortar in a manner that led to serious degradation of the BHT and in the process also destroyed two VBIEDs. You skilfully integrated most of the battlefield operating systems into a cohesive and effective fighting machine.

“I was most impressed by your leadership as you displayed effective command and control of the troops during the battle. Your calmness and composure over the radio reassured the command and elicited the right response from the troops who met the enemy attack with confidence and morale.

“You equally exhibited rare and uncommon courage as you moved about the battlefield without minding the physical danger that you were exposed to. You were undoubtedly MY HERO OF THE NIGHT. I salute your courage, exemplary leadership, and professional competence.

“It is thus my singular honour and privilege to commend you for conducting yourself in a most professional manner in the face of a determined BHT offensive. You are indeed a credit, not only to your unit, the brigade but also to the whole Konduga sector. Welldone and keep it up,” General Ali-Keffi concluded.

Meanwhile, further investigation revealed that Abdulfatai led his troops in the offensive in recapturing Kawuri and Bama where he earned another letter of commendation for bravery.

His military commander in a letter with reference No: Hq26/TFBDE/G1/300/03 wrote thus: “I am delighted to observe that your action during the offensive operation of that day is worthy of commendation as you not only exhibited uncommon courage but exemplary leadership with encouraged many of the troops including my humble self.

I am particularly honoured and privileged to have engaged in combat alongside such a brave and courageous officer and gentleman like you. You have proved by your action that you are an asset to the Nigerian Army and the country at large.”

FG to borrow N82 billion to buy Mosquito Nets

by Folarin Kehinde October 27, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Ministry of Health has submitted a 2022 budget proposal to the Senate to borrow N82 billion ($200 million) to buy mosquito nets.

The proposal is captured in the ministry’s Malaria Programme, according to its Permanent Secretary, Mahmuda Mamman, who defended it before the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Loans on Tuesday, October 26, 2021.

The official said the fund would be used to medically fight malaria in 13 states.

The coverage is expected to spread across 3,536 primary health care centres in 208 local government councils.

The Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr Faisal Shuaib, further clarified to the committee that the loan covers the importation and local production of mosquito nets.

The Senate Committee expressed strong reservations about the proposal, dismissing it as another money-making scheme that will only benefit creditors.

“Don’t we have local manufacturers of mosquitoes nets and malaria drugs in Nigeria to patronise with the loan?” Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe queried the officials.

Nigeria recorded the highest number of malaria cases (27%), and highest number of malaria deaths (23%) in the world in 2019, according to a World Health Organisation (WHO) report.

The WHO recently recommended the widespread use of the RTS,S/AS01 (RTS,S) malaria vaccine to specifically fight high P. falciparum malaria transmission.

The P. falciparum is the most deadly malaria parasite globally, and most prevalent in Africa where it kills more than 260,000 children under the age of five annually, with Nigeria one of the worst affected.

WHO’s recommendation is based on results from an ongoing pilot programme in Ghana, Kenya, and Malawi that has reached more than 800,000 children, with more than 2.3 million doses administered, since 2019.

RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine is to be provided in a schedule of four doses in children from five months of age for the reduction of malaria disease and burden.

After 14 Years in Kirikiri Prison Resident Pastor Regains Freedom

by Folarin Kehinde October 26, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

After 14 years and seven months in prison, the resident pastor of Kirikiri Correctional centre, Apapa, Pastor David, who was condemned to death, has regained his freedom.

In a special thanksgiving service yesterday at the Celestial Church of Christ Global Genesis, Lagos, the ex-convict, who was sentenced to death for a crime he claimed, he didn’t commit, thanked God for using the Shepherd-in-Charge of Genesis Global, Prophet Israel Ogundipe to bring him out of prison.

David, who was a transporter before his conviction, said he had no case file and was waiting for the day he would be called up to die before Ogundipe intervened.

“I had nobody. I was sentenced to death by hanging by Justice Olusola Williams in September 2013. I didn’t even have a case file. No father, no mother, no relatives, nobody to speak for me. Some people, who came to preach, encouraged me and gave us palliatives, but nobody offered to help,” he said.

During the service, Ogundipe said their paths crossed in 2020, when he was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment for fraud.

Ogundipe, who spent five months in prison, said: “When I newly got into the prison, I was introduced to David, who was the resident pastor. Immediately, he handed over the microphone to me and I began holding church services in the prison. He gave me that opportunity to preach the gospel. As a result of his gesture, when I got out of custody, I didn’t forget him.

“Interestingly, when I was there, God used me to help other people come out of the place for charges they were not guilty of. Pastor David never once pushed himself forward as I was helping other people. He kept serving the Lord in prison and without informing him, I told myself, once I am out of here, I will do all I can to get him out. Getting him out today was not by my own strength but by the grace of God and the entire Genesis Global.”

He noted that God at times allows some things to happen to some people to be an answer to their prayers, adding that it was the conspiracy that led him to prison that fast-tracked David’s release as he had no case file though he was sentenced to death.

As part of an effort to rehabilitate him into society, members of the church who were moved by David’s testimony donated over N500,000, a plot of land, a room self-contain, a bag of rice, a bus for commercial use, household appliances and utensils, among others to resettle him after his prison years.

by Folarin Kehinde October 25, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

Members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council on Monday stormed the Force Headquarters (FHQ) in protest over the mysterious disappearance of Comrade Tordue Henry Salem, a journalist with Vanguard Newspaper attached to the House of Representatives.

The journalists led by the FCT Council Chairman, Comrade Emmanuel Ogbeche, appealed to IGP Usman Alkali Baba to expedite action in ensuring the safe return of the journalist who was last seen on Wednesday, October 13.

The journalists who appeared in black attires marched from the Ministry of Women Affairs to Force Headquarters were armed with various placards with various inscriptions such as “Enough Is Enough”, “Free Tordue Now, Journalism Is Not a Crime”, “Free The Press”, “Stop Attacking Journalists” and many others.

While addressing his colleagues after the submission of a petition addressed to the IGP on the matter, Ogbeche urged the IGP to step up the intelligence and investigation team to unravel the mysterious disappearance of the journalist.

Ogbeche expressed displeasure at the way and manner the police have been handling the matter, adding that there was a need for the Police to give information on the whereabouts of the missing colleague since it was formally reported at the National Assembly police station immediately the unfortunate incident happened.

He lamented the harsh environment where the safety of journalists could no longer be guaranteed despite their constitutional role and responsibility of upholding the fundamental objectives of the constitution.

While receiving the protesters on behalf of IGP, the Police Public Relations Officer, CP Frank Mba, assured that the Police High Command was determined to unravel the mystery behind Tordue’s sudden disappearance, saying that a thorough investigation was in progress.

While appealing for caution on the matter so as not to jeopardise the ongoing investigation, he promised to brief the leadership of the union on the steps taken so far immediately the case was reported at the Police Post at the National Assembly.

According to him, “we are as concerned as journalists and members of the family. We have commenced an investigation and we have done everything humanly and technologically possible to ensure he is found. We have interrogated at least six persons and we have traced the places he visited after he left National Assembly.

“We have spoken with the last person he had an encounter with. We are imploring members of the family, public and journalists that this is an active investigation. We have a choice not to speak so as not to jeopardise our investigation. This has explained our silence over time.”

In her remarks, Chairperson of the House of Representatives Press Corps, Grace Ike, commended the journalists for turning out in large numbers in the search of their missing colleague.

NCC Alert Nigerians on virus that steals Banking Details

by Folarin Kehinde October 24, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigerian Communications Commission has alerted millions of Nigerian telecom consumers of the existence of new, high-risk, and extremely damaging, Malware called Flubot.

The commission warns that the virus steals banking details from devices.

This was contained in a press statement by the commission titled, ‘NCC alerts telecom consumers on Flubot Malware… Lists measures to guard against attack.”

NCC noted that according to the information received from the Nigeria Computer Emergency Response Team, Flubot “targets Androids with fake security updates and App installations”.

How the virus works

The statement quoted ngCERT as affirming that Flubot “impersonates Android mobile banking applications to draw fake web view on targeted applications and its goal transcends stealing personal data and essentially targets stealing of credit card details or online banking credentials.

“FluBot is circulated through Short Message Service and can snoop “on incoming notifications, initiate calls, read or write SMSes, and transmit the victim’s contact list to its control centre.”

“This malware attacks Android devices by pretending to be “FedEx, DHL, Correos, and Chrome applications” and compels unsuspecting users to alter the accessibility configurations on their devices in order to maintain a continuous presence on devices.

Read Also: NCC Extends MTN’s Licences by 10 years

“The new malware undermines the security of devices by copying fake login screens of prominent banks, and the moment the users enter their login details on the fake pages, their data is harvested and transmitted to the malware operators’ control point from where the data is exploited by intercepting banking-related One Time Passwords and replacing the default SMS app on the targeted Android device.

“Consequently, it secures admittance into the device through SMS and proceeds to transmit similar messages to other contacts that may be on the device it has attacked enticing them into downloading the fake app.

“It suffices to say that, when Flubot infects a device, it can result in incalculable financial losses. Additionally, the malware creates a backdoor which grants access to the user’s device, thus enabling the invader or attacker to perform other criminal actions, including launching other variants of malware.”

The NCC hereby wishes to reiterate the advisory of ngCERT as follows:

In view of this discovery and understanding of the process by which this malware operates, and in order to protect millions of telecom consumers and prevent criminal forces, irrespective of location, from using telecom platforms to perpetrate fraud and irredeemable damages, the NCC advised that:

  1. Do not click on the link if you receive a suspicious text message, and do not install any app or security update the page asks you to install.
  2. Use updated antivirus software that detects and prevents malware infections.
  3. Apply critical patches to the system and application.
  4. Use strong passwords and enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) over logins.
  5. Back-up your data regularly.
  6. If you have been affected by this campaign, you should reset your device to factory mode as soon as possible. This will delete any data on your phone, including personal data.
  7. Do not restore from backups created after installing the app. You may contact ngCERT on incident@cert.gov.ng for technical assistance.
  8. You will also need to change the passwords to all of your online accounts, with urgency, around your online bank accounts.
  9. If you have concerns that your accounts may have been accessed by unauthorised people, contact your bank immediately.

by Folarin Kehinde October 22, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

Popular Nigerian billionaire businessman and investor, Femi Otedola, on Friday, reportedly took over First Bank of Nigeria Plc.

It was gathered that Otedola decided to take over First Bank Nigeria because of the internal crisis rocking the bank.

According to The Street Journal, Otedola took over the bank with the acquisition of about ₦30 billion worth of shares, making him the single largest shareholder of the bank.

Otedola, being the largest shareholder, holds the highest voting shares, giving him power to dictate the direction of the bank through his voting power.

Recall that Femi Otedola had in 2019 divested his 75% direct and indirect share holding in Forte Oil, via a merger of his company Zenon Oil and former African Petroleum.

This act made many wondered why he made such a decision especially because of the lucrative nature of the oil and gas sector.

The billionaire had expressed interest in going into refining and petrochemicals as well as investing in the real estate and financial sector.

Ex-Nigerian Billionaire Goddy Anabor Turn Taxi Driver,Explains His Tragic Fall

by Folarin Kehinde October 22, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

In fact, in Lagos Sheraton Hotel, I spent 86million Naira in hosting people from London for one year and three months. I have the receipts, and you can go and ask them there. Today, things are very rough for me and my family; in fact, I don’t even know what to say anymore. I see my name in all the newspapers, and I don’t know why.

I trained people like Chris Sogunro, Tokunbo Sodunke, Dare Babayemi, Wale Awesu, and many of them like that. I made them what they are, and today, they are Billionaires. I’m surprised that they see me in this condition; some of them say I’m pushing drugs, but they can’t help me out. I don’t why they are such ingrates. It is only one man called Mike Biggy who lives somewhere in Akowonjo that has helped me. He rented a house for me and really takes care of me. I wonder why this people decided to treat me this way considering the amount of money I spent on them. There was a time I had N3bn in Equity Bank at Allen Avenue, Ikeja, which I spent on people. Anyway, I thank God for my life. I started colour printing in Nigeria, and I was printing for Thisday Newspaper, Punch, and many others. I also registered a security company which was approved and I had a license. They gave three of us the license. We had Vanni, Gordon and another one. I was even guarding the airport.

You were quite big then; didn’t you invest your money wisely then?

I invested a lot of my money, but because of corruption, mismanagement of the people handling the businesses ran them down. When you have a business, it’s very good to employ people who are reliable and give them some percentage of the investment or profits to get their commitments. That lesson I learnt greatly. I was putting my wife and my family, they ran the business down. My wife, Anthonia was even sharing money with people on purchases and supplies. My workers were building houses from the money they were making from the companies without letting me know.

How did you meet Anthonia?

I met her at a Police Station when I was having a problem then. She was a Sergeant then, very beautiful woman. She was working with Dan Baba then and she was trying to assist me.

Was she your first wife?

No, my first wife is an Ijebu woman called Toyin, and she is still alive. I used to call her Toyin Tomato; she was always with Kolington, Tayelolu and the likes.

Why did you part with her?

I parted with her because she likes parties a lot.

But you were also going to parties then?

I went to parties, but I could not leave my family and go to parties. She used to leave our little son and go to parties. She had three children for me. My first daughter, Bose, is a Phd holder in London. I have another one who is a doctor, and Tunde who is in America.

Are they aware of your situation?

Yes. They’ve tried.

I knew you had properties on Isaac John and Alabi Crescent in Ikeja, what happened to them?

They took advantage of me because they knew I needed money. I was offered N80m by a man called Basorun A.K for a house of about N300m. He has been in jail for about 10 years now because he was a drug dealer.

What about your Guest House on Joel Ogunnaike, GRA, Ikeja?

I rented it, and I gave it to Shina Eddo, who also rented it from the family that owns it. Shina is a very good person to me.

What happened to your fleet of cars because you had a penchant for them?

I had more than 50 cars like Bentley, Rolls Royce and others. I usually bought cars that were newly manufactured. Household enemies are the problems of my life. God has made me to see that the people I trusted don’t even care about me.

Why do you think everyone neglected you?

It’s corruption, distrust. I gave at least 60 percent of all I had to people. I’m so happy on the street because people like Ade Balogun take care of me.

What about Dare Babs; who was he to you?

He was my driver. I brought him from Abeokuta to Lagos when I was working at the Breweries. We had a problem because of some little money of $5m, which was stolen by one Kenny, though we’ve settled it. He’s a very good person, but I haven’t heard from him for some years now.

What’s your relationship with Oghadiome?

He is my village brother; in fact, my compound brother from Fuga in Edo State. The late Admiral Akhigbe was the governor of Lagos State then; I think he was the one that made Oghadiome to become a deputy to Lucky Igbinedion of Edo State then. When he became the Chief of Staff to Jonathan, I went to Abuja to look for him. I was thinking he would call me for something important because when his mother died, I was there. Even when they were building the secretariat in Fugar, I was the one that contributed the most and they named a hall there after me: Godwin Anabor Hall. Today, none of them recognises me, and it’s very funny.

Do you think what is happening to you is Karma because you used to ‘obtain’ people then?

In the Bible, God says ”if you believe him, he will give you joy. And for those that don’t believe him, he will give them power to acquire, but those who believe in Him will take it from you.” God gave me money; I did not obtain, it just came. If I obtained, they would have arrested me. I’ve never been on trial; or jailed for any offence. I don’t have such a record.

For your information, I know I will come back again; that’s why I’m speaking like this. I will come back again because you’re bound to go up and down seven times and still have the grace. I believe in God.

What is your greatest joy in life?

My joy is that I did not die and give people opportunity to say good things about me when I’m gone. I’m alive to see how people are treating me when I don’t have. In fact, people that I taught how to make money then and who are now rich don’t want to touch me.

Ambassadors of foreign countries used to attend your parties, what was your connection with them?

It’s because I’m honest. If you’re honest, people will come to you.

Tell me about your background, where are you from?

I’m from Fugar, Auchi in Edo state, but I was born in Kano, and grew up in Osogbo.

What about Ade Bendel, I learnt he is your friend?

He is like my brother because he is from Owan in Edo State; I met him in Lagos. I heard that he had some problems and he’s in prison; that’s all I know about him so far.

If you come back again, what lessons have you learnt in life?

I want people to know that the friend you have now is not your best friend; in fact, your household enemy is your family. It’s just you and God, believe me. Always watch your back.

Who is left with you now?

It’s God, and He is working because I’m living and enjoying. I still believe in Philippians 4:13. ‘I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.’

There was a report that you are now driving cab, is that true?

People are just writing whatever they like. A lot of people want to give me cars and other things. When God has blessed you, he has blessed you. Did you not see my driver, yes, he drives me in a Toyota call Pencil Light, but I’m not the one driving or doing kabukabu with it. I’ve learnt to live with my condition after all; I’m alive to see it all.

What is your greatest prayer to God now?

My prayer can be found in Psalm 1 which says, ‘Blessed is the man who does not walk in the midst of the wicked.’ He says he will bless them and make them like trees planted by the riverside. That’s what I prayed that I became a rich man. Forget about gossips.

How old are you chief?

I’m 55, and I was born on February 19.

Where is Anthonia and your children now?

They’re in London.

Tell me your last word?

My last word is that everybody should watch their back, because there are household enemies.

How A.A. Rano, A.Y.M. Shaffa, Others Allegedly “Use” Bandits To Dominate Gas Import From Republic of Niger

by Folarin Kehinde October 22, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

While countless lives continue to be wasted on grounds of banditry, and other socially disruptive activities around Northern Nigeria, popular oil merchants like A.A. Rano Nigeria Ltd and A.Y.M Shaffa Ltd are allegedly cashing out as they continue to dominate importation of ‘cheap gas’ from Republic of Niger, which they in turn sell at outrageous rate to Nigerian users, a discreet investigation has revealed.

Investigation carried out by LeadingReporters revealed that 80% of gas used around Northern Nigeria, imported from Republic of Niger are for industrial use but due to scarcity of the product, are being used as cooking gas.

The gas trade within this axis, as uncovered by this platform is currently being controlled by a few Northern Oil Moguls, using the instrumentality of banditry. Republic of Niger borders Nigeria in Katsina State, the home state of President Muhammadu Buhari.

This axis has been perennially engulfed in banditry and other forms of criminality which has resulted in the death of countless Nigerians.

While this menace surges on, and in line with the popular belief that war is money, major oil dealers, especially from the Northern Nigeria like A.A. Rano and Oil and Gas Ltd and A.Y.M. Shaffa have taken control of gas supply business from Republic of Niger.

A discreet source who spoke to this source said that the scarcity of gas and the skyrocketing prices of the product were artificially created by these oil merchants.

“They buy cheap gas originally meant for industrial use from Republic of Niger and sell same in Nigeria on dollar-value. They upset every other gas merchants with bandits such that only them call the shot in that axis”

One gas merchants who spoke on the condition of anonymity said that his last attempt to import gas from Republic of Niger almost grounded him as he did not only lose the product and his truck, but also lost millions of Naira to the bandits who are working for the major oil and gas merchants from Northern Nigeria.

“Because of what happens in that axis, I employed the services of a Northern Oil Dealer to help me buy gas from Niger Republic. He charged me more because, according to him, he has to sort out bandits who would never allow other merchants except the bigwigs like A.A. Rano and A.Y.M. Shafa to buy gas from Niger.

“Unfortunately, that transaction became the nightmare that almost grounded my business. The truck and product were seized by bandits on the orders of the big merchants. I never had the gas or my truck back”. The victim said.

All efforts to get the response of the oil and gas merchants were unsuccessful as at the time of filing this report.
