2023 Elections: SGF Drums Support for Igbo Presidency

by Folarin Kehinde December 20, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha has said Igbo has what it takes to lead the country as President.

According to the SGF, the success story Ndigbo have recorded in merchandise, trade and entrepreneurship can be deployed in leading the country.

The SGF was quoted to have said, “And I leave this with my Igbo brothers; The act of negotiation that you have perfected in dealing with merchandise, in dealing with commerce, in dealing with entrepreneurship, must be brought to bear on navigating your way to the Presidency of Nigeria”

Recall that in the country’s tripod arrangement, only Ndigbo of the Southeast Nigeria have not produced the country’s number one man since Independence in 1960.

While the Hausas and Yorubas have all led at different times, the Igbos have been sidelined.

In the geopolitical arrangement, South East despite its population and contributions to national development is yet to have a shot at the Presidency.

It is not however clear whether the 2023 election will provide the region the opportunity to be compensated over this age long injustice meted to it.

With the national leader of APC, Bola Tinubu showing interest at the country’s top job, despite his South West region ruling the country, it is not clear what the chances of the Southeast will be.

Top Igbo leaders, including former governor Orji Uzor Kalu have received calls to join in the journey for Mr. Muhammadu Buhari’s succession.

UK Black Tech Entrepreneurs Lament Dearth in Funding, Opt for Foreign Investors

by Folarin Kehinde December 19, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

Black tech entrepreneurs in the United Kingdom say they have to rely on foreign investors to get their businesses off the ground.

More than a year after the Black Lives Matter protests prompted the UK government to investigate discrimination against Black business owners, British venture capital firms continue to neglect Black and ethnic minority founders despite a booming startup scene.

“It is clear that the UK is not the place to try and get funding for your startup,” says Rich Serunjogi, founder of Business Score, which matches e-commerce companies with working capital financing.

“Only the very best [UK] VCs are interested. The second-tier funds tend to ignore Black founders and give excuses such as the business’ market size not being big enough or the idea being ‘too niche’.”

Between 2009 and 2019, only 0.24% of all venture capital available to UK startups went to just 38 Black founders, according to Extend Ventures, a non-profit that tracks the investment barriers minority businesses face.

Comparable data for 2020 has not yet been released, but it was a bumper year overall for UK startups trying to raise funds, with venture capital firms investing a record £11.3 billion ($15 billion), according to recent research by Tech Nation, a UK public-private body that helps British technology companies grow.

Buhari made this announcement at the 1st Presidential Summit on Ageing and Awards on Friday in Abuja.

Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola who represented the President at the event noted that the yearly commemoration of National Citizens Day is a further demonstration of our support to the senior citizens and older persons in Nigeria.

“The 5th of October every year will be celebrated as National Day of Senior Citizens in Nigeria in line with the UN international day of older persons celebrated annually on the 1st of October”.

Meanwhile, Buhari explained that the aging population of Nigeria constitute 4.7% of Nigeria’s population which is over 9 million people whose age bracket is characterized by people who has given their best towards the development of our nation.

He lamented that this is one of the most neglected age group in our society today as the aging population which qualify to be called senior citizens are not just been neglected but abused and made to die in silence.

He however assured that the federal government is committed to releasing mechanism towards promoting, providing and ensuring access to varying social services of older persons.

NCDMB Task Media to Upscale Reportage

by Folarin Kehinde December 16, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigerian Content Development Monitoring Board (NCDMB) has charged the media to go beyond the traditional method of reportage but be more proactive and upscale their method through advocacy.

The General Manager, Corporate Communications and Zonal Coordination, NCDMB, Dr. Ginah O. Ginah while speaking in Abuja on Thursday at the Nigerian Content Capacity Building Workshop for Media Stakeholders stated that
there is currently a shift in energy usage to renewable energy and as such the media should also follow the trend and change the narrative through advocacy in reportage.

“So today the question is the media has been giving us our traditional support, but we are now in an unstable environment in a renewable transition, so are we still going to continue the traditional media support? Or we are going to shift gear to something more proactive and effective?

“So that is what has made this workshop more remarkable and so important so we want a change from the traditional media reportage to advocacy, advocating to the rest of the world while Nigeria has to use transitional fuel to the renewable energy”.

“We have to be more proactive this time around, not just waiting for the releases from the NCDMB but running ahead of the operations people, the people implementing the Act, creating openings where we can also follow, so that has made this workshop so much important”.

Ginah noted that the theme of the workshop: Sustaining Nigerian Content Amidst Shifting Energy Landscape: The Role of the Media is apt and timely to educate the media, challenges it to tell the boards stories correctly, inform the public about what they are doing and her achievement to sensitize the public.

“It has become even more important to re-educate the media to this new alignment, we are at a cross road, so the goose that is laying our golden egg is being threatened which means we have to ramp up to this challenge and in doing this, we need the media more than ever before to be able to tell our stories more correctly and the new direction that the federal government wants us to go”.

He added that we are now entering into unstable environment, in which there is a shift in energy usage to renewable energy and our law and indeed the sustainace of Nigerian economy is based on oil and gas and the new shift is threatening our dominance in the oil and gas industry at least in Africa, our main source of revenue.

He however assured that the Board will ensure adequate training and media tools for journalists to enhance their skills and reportage.

“We have taken notes of tools and trainings for journalists, we are going to come up with solutions from that, one of our consultant alluded to the shortage of skills for our media stakeholders”.

Despite Deliberate Policies of Exclusion, Igbos Can Still Call The Shot In Nigeria – Gov. Uzodinma

by Folarin Kehinde December 13, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma has said that Igbos should stop playing the victim and assert a dominance through technology, trade snd commerce despite deliberate policies of exclusion Igbos has perennially suffered in Nigeria.

He admonished the Igbo youths especially to reinvent their creative and inventive wits as a way of dominating the economic landscape of the country. He further told them to refrain from violence as a way of registering their frustration and anger.

“Rather than resort to violence, youths in the South-East region should look beyond lamenting over the marginalisation of the Igbo people and take advantage of the opportunities in Nigeria.

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, gave the advice on Saturday at the presentation of his book titled ‘Reflections On The Igbo Question’ in Owerri, the state capital.

“What I have simply set out in this book is for our youths to appreciate the opportunities before them and embrace such instead of bemoaning the marginalisation of Ndigbo and resorting to violence, which is self-defeat,” he said. “They should come up with pragmatic ways of conquering their fear.

“I don’t want our youths to think that somebody is holding down their destiny. I also don’t want them to continue to be frustrated by the deliberate policies of exclusion. Instead, I want them to be focused on the larger picture of liberation through technology, trade, and commerce through which we can dominate Nigeria and dictate the pace of development.”

Noting that the accurate diagnosis of any ailment is a necessary step towards a cure, the governor believes bemoaning the marginalisation of Ndigbo in the Nigerian project is not as significant as devising a rational and realistic way out of the problem.

In spite of the state of affairs since the 1966 counter-coup, according to him, the Igbo people are still better off staying in Nigeria.

Governor Uzodinma anticipated that although some would not agree with his submission, he explained that going through the book would prove his point better.

He challenges the leaders and youths in the South East to reclaim their rightful place in Nigeria by building on the comparative advantage they have over their compatriots in other regions.

“We have to leverage the special talents bestowed on us by God to ensure that we are accorded our dues in Nigeria,” the governor stated. “One of the talents is technology. The other is commerce and trade.

“Currently, the evidence is there that it was helpful to us in the past and is still at our disposal today. Truth be told, we are dominating in commerce and trade in Nigeria. But we can do far better than that as a people if we put our thinking caps on.”

“In the real estate business in all the major cities of Nigeria, the Igbos are leading. Most standard provisions stores in any remote part of Nigeria are likely to be owned and operated by an Igbo man or woman.

“The second most populous ethnic group in any city in Nigeria outside the indigenes of the city are Igbos. How then do we harness these huge potentials to our advantage?” he queried.

Governor Uzodinma said Igbo students across the globe and in Nigeria were making waves with their technological innovations.

He stressed that individual accomplishments would only make a meaningful impact if they were collectively harnessed and channelled to a massive production hub to set the stage for the technological leap Nigeria has been yearning for over the years.
“We will not release her on bail, we will make sure we get it solved”.

South Korean Eco-friendly Toilet turns poop into Power and Digital Currency

by Folarin Kehinde December 13, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

BeeVi, an eco-friendly toilet that utilizes human excrement to create electricity to generate power, was invented by a professor at South Korea’s Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology

Professor Cho Jae-weon created the BeeVi toilet, which has a vacuum pump that transfers human waste into an underground tank. The waste is subsequently converted to methane by microorganisms in the tank, which serves as a source of energy. This energy is used to power a gas stove, a hot-water boiler, and a solid oxide fuel cell at UNIST.

Biogas is created when bacteria break down organic materials in an oxygen-free environment, a process known as anaerobic digestion. Anaerobic digestion is used in biogas systems to recycle organic waste and convert it to biogas. Biogas is made up of around 50% to 70% methane, 30% to 40% carbon dioxide, and trace quantities of other gases.

The combustion of biogas produces pressurized gas, which spins the blades of a turbine linked to a generator. Magnets rotate within the generator, forcing electrons in wires to flow and generating an electrical current that generates electricity.

A person defecates almost 500g each day on average. This may be turned into 50 liters of methane gas, which can generate 0.5 kWh of electricity or drive a car for 1.2 kilometers. Ggool, a virtual currency invented by Professor Jae-weon, which the students can earn currency after using the BeeVi toilet.

On campus at UNIST, a student can earn up to 10 Ggool each day, which can be used to buy products like freshly made coffee or instant cup noodles, fruits, and books from the campus stores.

Why FG Condemned Vehicles Assembled By Innoson, Others

by Folarin Kehinde December 12, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Government has said that the vehicles assembled by local and indigenous auto companies are not what the government wants.

The Minister of Trade and Investment, Otunba Niyi Adebayo made the disclosure while briefing on the status of some of the signed African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCTA), it’s impact on the economy of the Nation and other key investment updates regarding the Buhari-led Administration.

Nigeria has nine auto manufacturers, according to the National Automotive Design and Development Council

They are Peugeot Automobile Nigeria, Nissan Motors, Honda Motors, Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company, Hyundai Motor Company, Ford Motor Company, GIC Motor Companies Ltd, JAC Motors and Kia Motors.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, Nigerians spent N1.08trn to import used cars and motorcycles between October 2018 and September 2019.

Yemi Osinbajo, Nigeria’s Vice President had said at the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) conference in 2020 that local production has not grown as desired, adding that their limited growth has led to high prices of automobiles.

Adebayo said that the companies have underperformed as expected by the Nigerian government.

He said, “As at today, vehicles are assembled in Nigeria, but they are not what we want because what we are assembling today does not give us a couple of value chain as we want.

“What we have done in the ministry is that we set our self a target. We held meetings with original equipment manufacturers and they said yes they want to set up businesses in Nigeria, however, they need protection for whatever investment they want to make.

“And based on that, we now looked into having a proper auto policy. What we have done is we now approached the Afrexim Bank who have partnered with us and they are funding. We have employed some of these international consulting firms, we have employed them. They are going to be paid by some of the grants we have received from Afrexim Bank.

“They are coming with the auto policy, it is being funded by Afrexim Bank and once that auto policy is ready we will take it to Federal Executive Council. Once FEC approves it, we will take it to the National Assembly and pass into law.

“Once it is passed into law, the original equipment manufacturers- the auto makers will now know that there is a law that protects their investments at that point they will now come and invest in Nigeria.”

The minister also disclosed ongoing plans to revive Tinapa, a business and leisure resort located North of Calabar municipality, Cross River State.

Located in the Tinapa Free Zone and Resort, the project which was built under the Cross River State Governor, Donald Duke, cost N55.88bn.

But the Minister said, “There has been an interest shown in Tinapa by a tech company. I know an approach has been made to the governor of Cross River State, with a view to seeing that they want to take it over and turn it into a tech hub. Talks are ongoing on in that direction.”
