Eid-el-Fitri: Sokoto Sheik, Sultan Differs on Moon Sighting

by Folarin Kehinde May 2, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Islamic cleric who led his followers to observe Eid-el-Fitri prayers on Sunday, Sheikh Musa Lukwa, has claimed that he got a report that the moon was sighted from impeccable sources.

The PUNCH had reported that the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, declared Monday as Eid-ul-Fitr, saying that no moon was sighted on Saturday.

The sighting of the moon signifies the commencement of the Muslims’ Ramadan fast and the end of it.

However, Sheik Luka faulted the Sultan’s findings, saying that it contradicted the Islamic ethics of announcing a new month in Islam.

The Sokoto Sheikh explained the Sultan shouldn’t have based his decision on scientific findings after human beings reportedly sighted the moon.

He said, “A lecturer at the Usman Danfodiyo University, Dr. Maigari, confirmed the sighting of the new moon at the main campus of the university and there were reports on the new moon from about 10 communities in Jega, Kebbi State, which was confirmed by the Chief Imam of Jega, Malam Bashar.”

“And Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi also confirmed the sighting of the new moon in many places in the country.

“So, we observed our Eid in compliance with the instruction of the Holy Prophet who asked us to fast and to break the fast at the sighting of the new moon. It is agreed that obedience to our leaders, especially, the Sultan, is compulsory for every Muslim but on the condition that he did not disobey Allah and His Prophet (SAW).

“You can’t take decisions based on scientific evidence by astronauts because it is against our religion and even Imam Malik discouraged this.”

The Sultan had announced that the Muslim’s Eid-el-Fitr, which marks the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan, holds on Monday in Nigeria.

Also, Saudi Arabia announced that Eid-el-Fitr would begin on Monday in the country.

Nigeria, including some Gulf states like the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain did not sight the moon, The PUNCH learnt.

The timing of Eid is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon, in accordance with the Muslim’s Hijrah calendar.

100bn UN Climate Funding Still Inaccessible by African Countries – NiMET DG

by Folarin Kehinde April 25, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Kenny Folarin, Abuja

The Director General, Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) Prof. Mansur Matazu has lamented the inability of African Countries to assess the 100 billion naira United Nations Climate Funding to mitigate the impact of climate change in Africa.

Matazu, represented by Engr. Mailadi Misau while speaking at the End of the PRESAS-SS Workshop noted that African countries are unable to assess the funds because of the complexities in assessing it.

“There is a UN intervention for the provision of global climate fund which is supposed to be accessible to all countries, unfortunately African countries are unable to assess this funds because of the complexity of the nature of assessing it”.

“The developed nation have pledged 100 billion naira annually to combat climate change especially in Africa, unfortunately the process of assessing this fund is so tedious and I don’t think any African country has been able to assess anything significant from the fund”.

Continuing, Matazu noted that climate change was caused by the Europeans and Americans, yet the process of assessing funds meant to mitigate its impact is herculean

“And the interesting thing is that Africa did not cause climate change, it was caused essentially by Europe and Americans, they exploited the situation and damage our climate and now we have to bear the impact and we are only on to the money making it difficult for us to assess”.

Meanwhile, Matazu noted that occurrences of erratic weather, which know no geographical boundaries are beyond human control, but maintained that it is possible to adapt to or mitigate the effects of adverse weather if a forecast of the expected weather can be obtained on time.

Also, the representative, World Meteorological Agency (WMO), Dr. Bernard Gomez stated that putting enough funding to mitigate the adverse effect of climate change is a worthy one.

According to Gomez, trying to eliminate effect of climate change may not be possible because what it takes to do that is enormous.

He stressed that the role of WMO is to sensitize government that countries must take precautions to protect their populations

Gomez maintained that the issue of data sharing for better service provision is of paramount importance for members in the region.

“With increasing capacity and capabilities in modelling and use of NWP, focus on quantity and quality data generation and timely sharing is highly commendable”.

“We encourage countries to generate data so that forecaster can have background to make credible data”.

Linda Ikeji was part of the reasons my marriage crashed’ – Carolyna Hutchings

by Folarin Kehinde April 23, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nigerian movie star Caroline Hutchings has revealed that popular blogger, Linda Ikeji was part of the reasons her marriage crashed.

Hutchings was married to billionaire businessman Mohammed Danjuma.

The movie star made this known during one of the episodes of the reality TV show ‘Real Housewives of Lagos’ while reacting to a statement made by one of the housewives, Laura Ikeji.

Laura said she didn’t vibe with the movie star because she insulted her sister, Linda.

That, however, did not go down well with Caroline as she blasted Laura.

“Your sister was so…you what? You can have a blog but don’t hurt people. Part of the reasons my marriage broke was because of Linda,” she said.

“I reached out to her, she did not care. Linda lied about my age, I reached out to her, and she did not care. Linda lied that my daughter was for another man, I reached out to her, and she did not care.”

And you sit down here to defend your family. I have a family too. I have children that look up to me. You can’t sit there and tell me you want to slap me.”

The visibly furious actress also revealed that her daughter has two holes in her heart.

“Don’t talk about my daughter. My daughter has two fucking holes in her heart. Do you think I am happy to be divorced? From the very moment I got married, Linda was on my butt.”

The Real Housewives of Lagos is a Nigerian reality television series showing on Showmax, starring Carolyna Hutchings, Laura Ikeji, Chioma Ikokwu, Toyin Lawani-Adebayo, Iyabo Ojo, and Mariam Timmer.

written by Folarin Kehinde

Kenny Folarin, Abuja

“We use this medium to appeal to political parties to be considerate on the cost of nomination forms for elective offices as it will lead to disenfranchising candidates of goodwill without enough resources most especially the youths who are most affected by leadership dysfunction over the years as they still control a large portion of our voters demography”.

“We are appealing to the political parties to see how the youth can participate due to the hike price of form”.
