More Worries for Nigerian Students As ASUU Extend Strike till August

by Folarin Kehinde May 9, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has extended its ongoing strike by three months.

This was announced at the end of the union National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting which held in Abuja on Sunday.

ASUU president, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, said the union resolved to give the government enough time to satisfactorily resolve all the outstanding issues.

“After extensive deliberations, noting Government’s failure to live up to its responsibilities and speedily address all the issues raised in the 2020 FGN/ASUU Memorandum of Action (MoA) within the additional eight-week roll–over strike period declared on 14th March 2022, NEC resolved that the strike be rolled over for twelve weeks to give Government more time to satisfactorily resolve all the outstanding issues.”

“The roll-over strike action is with effect from 12.01 a.m. on Monday, 9th May 2022. The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) held an emergency meeting on Sunday, 8th May 2022 at the Comrade Festus Iyayi National Secretariat, University of Abuja, Abuja,” he said.

The strike started on February 14, 2022, announced a four-week total and comprehensive warning strike following the inability of the union and the Federal Government to reach common ground on the demands of university lecturers.

Some of ASUU’s demands include the release of revitalization funds for universities, renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, release of earned allowances for university lecturers, and deployment of the UTAS payment platform for the payment of salaries and allowances of university lecturers.

Following the expiration of the initial four weeks of the warning strike, the union had gone ahead to declare another eight weeks saying that it was giving the government more time to attend to its needs.

TURNING MALAMI INTO NIGERIA’S POLITICAL SCAPE-GOAT

by Folarin Kehinde May 9, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Abubakar Malami, SAN, the current Attorney General of the federation and Minister of Justice is always in the news. Painfully, the comments on the Minister’s performance are usually fault-finding. The latest is a report which says he has distributed expensive cars to some of his supporters, ostensibly to facilitate their support for his quest to become the next governor of his home state – Kebbi, Northwest Nigeria. For this reason, many analysts, critics, political opponents and their paid commentators have accused the Minister of corruption with the argument that only a corrupt political office-holder can afford huge sums for the purchase of a fleet of cars to be distributed to supporters. Bearing in mind that empowerment of political supporters is one of the major things happening nationwide now, it is hard to fathom the mischief in Malami’s participation in it.

Thus, one does not have to be the Minister’s supporter to see that he is deliberately isolated for condemnation over a common trend in the political landscape of Nigeria. Everyone knows how huge the cost of contesting elections in Nigeria has become – a development that cannot not be traced to the current political actors, let alone only one of them. While some politicians are distributing vehicles, many others are distributing various other items whose volume easily exceed the cost of the total number of vehicles distributed on behalf of aspirant Malami. It is therefore unfair to chastise only the Minister.

Another evidence of bias against him is the refusal of his critics to listen to the explanation that the vehicles were donated by his friends akin to how other aspirants have received donations both in cash and in kind from friends, family members and associates. If anyone doubts the source of such donation, it ought to be across board.

It has also been suggested that huge funds have accrued to the office of the Attorney General because the Minister and his aides have been operating the Ministry as a corruption centre. Some media reports have even attributed what they called the recent siege by the EFCC on the office to the fact that the anti-corruption agency had become disillusioned by the excesses of the Ministry. Meanwhile some people have already accepted the verdict without verifying from the anti-corruption agency if it had in fact attempted such a siege. Some commentators are convinced that the addition of Francis Atuche a recently convicted Bank executive among those presented for clemency was because the office of the Attorney General was heavily bribed to entertain such an unhealthy compromise. These arguments are infantile because the office of the Attorney General can at best exercise the mandate of compiling a list of applications for clemency. The office cannot by whatever imagination influence which applicant will be successful in a process which passes through several stages to the Council of State.

Whereas no less than three other Ministers have opted to not resign from office before participating in the coming party primaries, Abubakar Malami seems to be the only one that people cherish to condemn for exercising the option only because some powerful haters have chosen to scrutinize only what Malami does or declines to do. Such critics have refused to realize that Malami and other Ministers in the same school of thought on the subject of when to resign from office are entitled to the type of political risks they wish to take. It will also be recalled that Malami has been severally held liable not only for what the executive branch of government does, even the decision of the Judiciary that a part of the new Electoral Act is unconstitutional is still the fault of Malami. Haba!!

The current publicly declared ambition of Abubakar Malami SAN is to become the governor of his state. The only persons qualified to constitute the relevant electorate are made up of two groups, party members in the case of primaries and registered voters in the state in the case of the governorship election. They are in essence the only ones at this point in time that can determine who would win the next governorship election in the state. Those who constitute themselves into political commentators on electoral matters in Nigeria as a whole should kindly leave Malami to grapple with the dispositions of Kebbi voters.

NNPC; why fuel queues have returned

by Folarin Kehinde May 9, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd, NNPC, has revealed that the recent fuel queues in Abuja is likely caused by low loadouts at depots which usually happens during long public holidays.

The NNPC disclosed this in a statement on Sunday night while reacting to re-appearing fuel queues in Abuja.

The Corporation added that it is working with its marketing partners to take necessary measures to ramp up loadouts from all depots.

What the NNPC is saying

Reacting to mild queues in the Federal Capital, they said, “The NNPC Ltd notes the sudden appearance of fuel queues in parts of Abuja. This is very likely due to low loadouts at depots which usually happen during long public holidays, in this case, the Sallah celebrations.

“Another contributing factor to the sudden appearances of queues is the increased fuel purchases which is also usual with returning residents of the FCT from the public holiday.”

NNPC disclosed that the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority in conjunction with its marketing partners have taken necessary measures to ramp up loadouts from all depots.

“We assure all residents of the FCT, and indeed all Nigerians, that we have ample local supplies and national stock in excess of 2.5 billion litres, with sufficiency of more than 43 days.

“The NNPC Ltd hereby advises motorists not to engage in panic buying as supplies are adequate as will become increasingly evident in the coming days,” it said.

Aviation Fuel Hike: 9 Airlines Begin Indefinite Strike Monday

by Folarin Kehinde May 8, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Air Peace, Ibom Air, Max Air, Arik Air, United Nigeria Airlines and four others are embarking on an indefinite strike on Monday, May 9, 2022, as the cost of the aviation fuel hits N700 per litre.

Other airlines affected are Aero Contractors, Azman Air, Overland Airways, and Dana Air.

This was disclosed by the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) via a statement issued on Friday.

The statement, which was seen by Nairametrics, was signed by the President of AON, Abdulmunaf Yunusa and copied the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika and the Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) Capt. Musa Nuhu.

It stated, “It is with a great sense of responsibility and patriotism that the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) have carried on deploying and subsidising their services to our highly esteemed Nigerian flying public in the last four months despite the astronomical hike in the price of JetA1 and other operating costs.

Overtime, aviation fuel price (JetA1) has risen from N190 per litre to N700 currently. In the face of this, airlines have engaged the Federal Government, the National Assembly, NNPC and oil marketers with the view to bringing the cost of JetA1 down which has currently made the unit cost per seat for a one hour flight in Nigeria today to an average of N120,000.

The latter cannot be fully passed to passengers who are already experiencing a lot of difficulties.

EID EL FITRI: Oyeyemi Congratulates Muslim Ummah, Calls for Precaution and Compliance with Traffic Laws

by Folarin Kehinde May 4, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

As the Muslim Ummah end the Ramadan fast , the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr Boboye Oyeyemi has sent his congratulatory message on the successful completion of the spiritual exercise as he calls for precaution and compliance with traffic laws.

In his Eid el fitri message, Oyeyemi preached love for one another, peaceful coexistence and care for the less privileged members of the society, saying these are the values of the Ramadan fast which people must imbibe beyond the Sallah celebrations.

The Corps Marshal called on the Muslim Ummah to sustain the positive lessons of the Ramadan fast, noting that acts of denial; selfless service and love which were practiced in the holy month are central to the success of the safer road campaign by the FRSC.

He emphasised that the wanton destruction of lives and property on the nation’s highways resulting from people’s impatience would been avoided, if people properly imbibe the lessons of the Ramadan fast.

In a press release signed by the Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, the FRSC Corps Marshal was quoted as expressing satisfaction with majority of motorist’s conduct throughout the period of the holy month particularly, with regards to compliance with road traffic regulations.

He therefore admonished the Muslims as well as members of the general public not to jettison the rules in the course of the celebration, but to continue to observe them in order to build on the gains made so far.

The FRSC Corps Marshal urged the Muslim Ummah to use the period of the Eid el fitri celebration to offer special prayers for Allah’s blessings, wisdom and guidance. He restated the commitment of the FRSC to sustaining its present collaboration with other security agencies towards effective enforcement of traffic rules and regulations.

Buttressing his point further, Kazeem quoted him as saying; “This year’s Eid el fitri is coming at a time when the Federal Government under President Muhammadu Buhari is working day and night to have the roads fixed. As such, every citizen must therefore, support the measures put in place by the Federal Government to ensure that the roads are motorable”.

Oyeyemi further reassured that Commanding Officers across the country have been given directives to be on the alert during the Sallah celebration to provide all necessary support to members of the public and to particularly attend to whatever emergencies that may arise.

He called on members of the public to join the FRSC in its ongoing campaigns for safer road environment by promptly reporting any road and other emergencies they notice to the FRSC Call Centre through the toll free line: 122 or directly to the studio of the National Traffic Radio through the telephone lines:08052998090 or 09067000015.

Concluding, the Corps Marshal stated that “I wish all the Muslim Ummah Allah’s abundant rewards for the Ramadan fast, and on this occasion of the Eid el fitri celebration, I pray for peaceful celebration to all,” .
