Eucharia Anuobi to Nigerian Couple: Don’t Hide Money From Your Spouse

by Folarin Kehinde August 6, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Veteran Nollywood actress and Evangelist, Eucharia Anunobi has encouraged couples to stop hiding their finances and assets from each other.

According to the movie star, there are a lot of disadvantages of keeping away your funds from your partner.

“Let me ask you one question : As a married person, if something tragic happens to you now or you get critically ill , who will be the first person to be called? Your husband or wife right? Yet you hide your money or properties from your husband or wife ? Hmmmm .

Your child has entered puberty , yet you still bath him or her or bath together with him or her or you barge into the bathroom while they are bathing , or their bedroom without knocking , claiming that you are their parent , are you alright? Surely you are not alright !

You are Married, yet you sleep in separate bedrooms, claiming you need your space and peace : why did you get married in the first place ??

Recall that Eucharia Anunobi had stated that sexual intimacy before marriage should be encouraged.

In a video posted on her Instagram page, the actress said the proponents of the no sex before marriage agenda are out of their minds

Eucharia said if couples don’t indulge in sex before marriage, how do they know if their partner is good in bed?

She said, “What is this whole noise about no sex before marriage? How can someone, how can anyone say that someone should not indulge in sexual activities with someone who has already proposed?

“The proponent of this whole wicked agenda of no sex before marriage must be completely out of their minds. If they are not out of their minds, how can they recommend such a wicked thing?

“How do I get to know if my intended is good in bed?”

She also stated that it’s difficult to abstain from sex with the one you’re attracted to.

Hike in Bread Price: FCT Residents Groan, Resort to Cabin Biscuits

by Folarin Kehinde August 6, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nelson Uguwagbo, Abuja

Bread, commonly found in almost every Nigerian home as not just breakfast but at times an alternative is no longer available due to the recent rise in prices of flour.

The hike in the price of bread is affecting everyone from families and young school children who depend on bread as their breakfast, to site workers or office who normally take bread and canned drinks during their break.

It is also affecting the individuals whose main business is the sale and supply of bread. What use is a product that many cannot buy.

LEADINGREPORTERS discussed with various sellers and consumers of bread to hear their own experience and how the increased price of bread is affecting them.

Mama David, a popular retailer in Dape, Abuja told me to look into her store and check if I would see any bread on display. When I checked, there was none, so I asked what the reason was.

She said: “When I went to the Market to buy bread from the person that I normally buy from, they said bread is not available as the price to make bread has increased drastically and only few bakers are able to keep up.

“When I went to another shop, the price they called was way above my budget so I couldn’t purchase it. Even if I had bought it, I know my customers won’t be able to buy it due to the price increase.”

Emmanuel Dauda who is a teacher in Dape said “The price of bread has increased beyond my purchasing power. Right now, you can’t even find bread been sold for 50 Naira. Even the one been sold for 100 naira is paper weight that would not do anything to quench your hunger, so it was better you just saved your money”.

As for Sliced bread, that one should be left for the wealthy as any slice bread you touch now with even little quality, goes for nothing less than 900 naira.

When we asked if he had found any other alternatives to bread, he said:

“No food can really replace the range that bread has, however, now I mostly use cabin to take tea or just eat if I’m very hungry.

Another Seller, Francis Okeke, said due to high cost of bread, bread he purchases now stays in his shop for up to 3 days before he sells everything off.

” Previously, anytime he brings bread, his customers buy it before the end of the day with him not been able to meet the demand.

However, now his bread takes days before they are sold off and he is even considering to stop buying bread.

The reasons for the increase in the price of bread are enormous. A range of factors both locally and internationally have contributed to the increase in the price of bread.

The number one reason is the war in Ukraine. On 24th February, Russia invaded Ukraine, hence a war that lasts till this day ensued. Ukraine is the 5th largest exporter of wheat in the world and major supplier to most African countries including Nigeria. Wheat is used to make flour which is an essential ingredient for bread.

Russia has blocked the ability of Ukraine to export wheat to any country leading to increase in the price of wheat and flour in most globally, Nigeria included. This increase has contributed to a hike in any product made with flour of which bread is chief.

This is expected to continue till whenever the war between Russia and Ukraine comes to an end
another cause for the increase in price of bread is general inflation in the nation.

As at June, the inflation rate of Nigeria stood at 18.6%, the highest since 2017. Also, the naira has been on a free fall against the dollar and as at today, one dollar sells for above 700 naira.

This inflation has led to the increase in cost of so many products, bread not been an exception.

Finally, the most worrying reason for the rise in the increase of bread is a series of quarrels between the trio of bakers’ association, flour millers association and the federal government. Members of the bakers association went on strike to protest the constant hike in the price of Sugar and Flour by the trio of Flour mills, Bua group and Dangote group.

The National Leader of Progressive Bakers Association of Nigeria (PBAN), Prince Jacob Adejonrin, has urged the Federal Government to call the country’s millers to order as he accused them of being responsible for the incessant increment in the price of bread.

He Said: “When we complain to the millers, mainly Flour Mills of Nigeria and Olam about the incessant increase in the price of flour, they tell us it’s the price of wheat. Does the price of wheat increase every day? They are just frustrating us. The price of 50kg bag of wheat is now N30,000. In the last one month, they have increased the price of flour three times. We are expecting another price increase soon.”

Adejonrin who accused Olam of being the major culprit in the price increase saga, said, “Olams is the problem of bakers now because they are always the first to increase price anyhow and other millers will follow.

Nigeria is not the only country importing wheat from Ukraine yet the price of flour is not increasing in those other countries like ours.”

The bakers have returned to work but have pushed the burden to the customers to bear.

Many people have started to find alternatives to bread since they can no longer purchase it. Many now use Cabin Biscuit as a substitute for bread, for drinking tea or with other combinations. For now, the price of Cabin Biscuit stands at 400 naira today. We hope that doesn’t increase too.

Buhari Seeks International collaboration to Tackle Insecurity

by Folarin Kehinde August 3, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday in Abuja commended collective efforts of nations towards tackling security challenges across the globe, and within Nigeria, urging more collaboration to check terrorism, banditry and insurgency.

He spoke at the Presidential Villa while receiving Letters of Credence of Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ambassador James Kingston Christoff and Ambassador of Mexico to Nigeria, Juan Alfred Miranda Oritz.

Buhari told the diplomats that successes in taming insecurity had been recorded through collaboration across borders, and more could be achieved.

“The devastating effect of global insecurity, climate change and the post COVID-19 era has devastated global economies. Nations continue to struggle to recover from these multiple global challenges.

“The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has undermined the progress countries have achieved in tackling food security in the last decade. While, the political instability in Libya continues to fuel terrorism in the Sahel, as well as scuttle democratic sustenance in both West and Central African regions.

“Nigeria is not left out of the equation, as we are fighting to rid our country of banditry, kidnapping, herder/farmer crisis and insurgency. We are, however, making meaningful progress with the support of friendly countries like yours to sustain these fights until we overcome these challenges,’’ he said.

At the regional level, President Buhari said Nigeria had been working with other Member-States of ECOWAS and other regional blocs, to deal with the problems of terrorism, trans-border crimes, maritime crimes such as piracy and illegal fishing on our waters, illicit drug and human trafficking, banditry, as well as unconstitutional changes of government.

“I believe that matters of security have become the business of all nations as these challenges go beyond the abilities of any single country to effectively contain.

“The world must, therefore, work closely together and Nigeria counts on your support in cementing the relations between our countries at both bilateral and multilateral levels to surmount these global threats to civilization,’’ he stated.

The President urged diplomats to monitor political developments in the country, leading to the 2023 elections, but remain true to their professional ethics of non-interference.

He also noted that Nigeria was drawing closer to its national elections and candidates representing their parties at different levels were beginning to build consensus within their respective parties in preparations to the launching of campaigns across the country soon.

“As the drums of campaign begin to rise, I urge you to be guided by diplomatic practice to ensure that your activities remain within the limits of your profession as you monitor the build-up to the elections and the conduct of the general elections,” he said.

The President further advised the diplomats to focus on building on the successes of their predecessors.

“The task before you require you both to build on the successes of your predecessors and further make efforts in the expansion and advancement of the cordial bilateral relations and cooperation between Nigeria and your respective countries. These relations as you all know, span across political, socio-economic and cultural spheres, that have overtime benefitted our peoples.

“I am confident that, in carrying out your diplomatic responsibilities in the course of your tour of duties, you will spare time to appreciate the uniqueness and strength in our country’s cultural diversities, in terms of both human and natural resources, as well as the flora and fauna across the country,’’ he said.

According to him, the cultural diversity of Nigeria “represents our pride as a nation and identity as a people,’’ while urging the diplomats to also build friendship and acquaintances in the course of their stay in the country.

In his remarks, on behalf of the ambassadors, the Canadian High Commissioner thanked the President for the ceremony of accepting the Letters of Credence.

“Today marks formal beginning of our engagement with the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. We will work closely with ministers and officials to start a progressive relationship,’’ Christoff said.

Minimum Wage: Resident Doctors Issue 2-Week Ultimatum To FG

by Folarin Kehinde August 3, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has given a two-week ultimatum to the federal government to implement the new National Minimum Wage and Hazard allowance or face indefinite industrial action.

The ultimatum was issued in a communiqué jointly signed by the NARD’s president, Dr Dare Ishaya; secretary general, Suleiman Abiodun; and publicity and social secretary, Alfa Yusuf, which was made available to Daily Trust at the end of the July National Executive Council meeting and Scientific Conference of the association.

The NARD called on the federal government, the Nigerian Governors Forum, stakeholders and well-meaning Nigerians to prevail on the governors of Imo, Ondo, Ekiti and Gombe states to urgently pay arrears of salaries and allowances owed its members in the tertiary health institutions, lamenting that the matter was becoming embarrassing.

It urged the federal government to expedite action on the payment of the newly reviewed Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) within the two-week ultimatum to enable its members to meet the closing date of examination registration as advertised by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN).

The association enjoined the federal government and all state governments to look into the issue of assault on doctors and thoroughly investigate the ongoing cases and put measures in place to nip the menace in the bud to forestall future occurrences.

The governor disclosed this in an emergency security meeting in Lokoja on Tuesday.

Bello gave the order during a meeting with all first and second-class traditional rulers, including local government council chairmen in the state.

He urged all traditional rulers to guard their domain and ensured all the nooks and crannies of their areas are cleansed.

“Ensuring peaceful coexistence in your domain is your exclusive responsibility. You have the exclusive responsibility to ensure that all nooks and crannies of your areas are free from criminality of all sorts,” said Bello.

The governor also ordered the removal and demolition of shanties in Lokoja, Osara, Zango, Itobe, Obajana, and all other areas in the state.

Bello sent a strong warning to politicians not to be involved in anything that could disrupt the peace of the people and the security they presently enjoy.

“Let me sound a note of warnings to all politicians irrespective of political persuations to desist from anything that could disrupt the peace we are currently enjoying in the state,” he added.

ASUU Extends Strike by Four Weeks

by Folarin Kehinde August 1, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced a four weeks extension of the strike action embarked on by its members since February 2022.

ASUU National Executive Council (NEC) reached this decision at a meeting held on Sunday, which lasted into the early hours of Monday.

ASUU in a statement on Monday said this was following extensive deliberations and taking into cognisance of the government’s past failures to abide by its own timelines in addressing issues raised in the 2020 FGN/ASUU Memorandum of Action (MoA).

ASUU resolved that the strike be rolled over for four weeks to give the government more time to satisfactorily resolve all the outstanding issues.

The union resolved that the strike be rolled over for four weeks to give the government more time to satisfactorily resolve all the outstanding issues.

“The meeting was called to review developments since NEC’s resolution to extend its roll-over strike action by another 12 weeks with effect from 9th May, 2022,” ASUU said.

[AD]

“The NEC meeting took place against the backdrop of government’s obligations as spelt out in the Memorandum of Action (MoA) it signed with ASUU on 23rd December 2020. Specifically, NEC recalled that government’s failure to conclude the process of renegotiating the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, deploy the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS), pay outstanding arrears of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), release agreed sum of money for the revitalization of public universities (Federal and States), address proliferation and governance issues in State Universities, settle promotion arrears, release withheld salaries of academics, and pay outstanding third-party deductions led to the initial declaration of the roll-over strike on 14th February, 2022.

NEC viewed with seriousness the recent directive given by the President and Visitor to all Federal Universities that the Minister of Education, in consultation with other government officials, should resolve the lingering crisis and report to him within two weeks. The Union wonders why it had taken five full months and needless muscle-flexing for government to come to the realisation of the need for honest engagement.

“NEC acknowledged the growing understanding of the issues and the groundswell of support for the Union’s principled demand for a globally competitive university education in Nigeria. Nigerian universities must not be reduced to constituency projects that merely exist on paper and our scholars must be incentivised to stay back and do what they know best, here in Nigeria.

NEC appreciated the historic nationwide protest of 26th and 27th July, 2022 organised by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in collaboration with Civil Society Organisations (CSO) to further create awareness on the antics of the Nigerian ruling class to destroy public education. ASUU renews its commitment to the struggles of NLC in championing the cause of the working and suffering Nigerians.

Insecurity: FCT, Neighboring States Move to Attack Terrorists in Hideouts

by Folarin Kehinde July 29, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Capital Territory Administration said it had taken steps to rejig security operations and collaborations with states contiguous to Abuja to curb rising insecurity in the nation’s capital.

Speaking at the FCT security committee’s meeting, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Sunday Babaji, explained that with the move, security operatives in the neighbouring states and the FCT would take the attack to the enclaves of the terrorists terrorising their territories.

The neighbouring states are Niger, Nasarawa, Kaduna, Kogi, Benue and Plateau.

Babaji believed that the action would help to adequately secure the FCT.

He was quoted to have said these in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the FCT, Anthony Ogunleye, late Thursday.

The statement partly read, “In order to enhance the provision of security in the nation’s capital, the FCT Administration has taken steps to re-invigorate the G7 security operations which involves security collaboration and partnerships with states that are contiguous to the Federal Capital Territory.

“According to the FCT CP, the re-invigoration of the G7 security operations will see the commencement of security actions and procedures by members of the G7, which will involve taking the fight to the bandits and terrorists in their camps which are mostly located in states bordering the FCT.

The Police Commissioner, however, called for the collaboration and cooperation of residents of the FCT whom he urged to provide actionable and timely intelligence to the security agencies while also calling them to be security conscious at all times.”

He also assured residents of their safety and urged them to go about their lawful activities.

Babaji added, “I’m also assuring them that the FCT is safe. Every member of the community should go about their lawful businesses. We are on top of the situation. We have deployed our men both overt and covert and we are doing everything possible in synergy with all the security agencies, with the support of our traditional rulers and religious leaders to make sure that FCT is safe,” he assured.

The Senior Special Assistant on Security to the Minister, Ambassador Abu Mohammed, while corroborating the CP, revealed the readiness of the heads of security agencies in the neighbouring states to participate actively in the G7 operations.

He also called on residents to be wary of fake news especially on the social media which are designed to cause panic amongst the citizenry.
