Niger: ‘We lost N13bn weekly due to border closure’ Northern traders lament

by Folarin Kehinde August 14, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Northern traders have lamented the loss of about N13bn weekly due to the closure of borders in the region over the ongoing crisis in Niger Republic.

It would be recall that President Bola Tinubu had on August 4 ordered the closure of all borders with Niger Republic which the Nigerian Customs have now enforced. The borders include Jibiya in Katsina state, Illelah in Sokoto and Maigatari in Jigawa.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Sunday, the chairman, Arewa Economic Forum Ibrahim Yahaya Dandakata, said the economic consequences of the closure is becoming unbearable for traders, while urging the federal government to open the maje-illo border in Kebbi to allow traders bring in goods to the country.

“Since the order by the President to close all the borders with Niger Republic following the announcement of the coup, the consequences have been huge. Northern traders loss N13bn weekly.

“Trade between Niger and Nigeria is usually informal especially in perishable goods and only last year alone, it is estimated at about N177bn in goods and services like livestock and food items

“Therefore, further closure of the border will be detrimental to the huge trade going on between these two countries.

“We hereby appeal to President Tinubu to open the maje-illo border in Kebbi state to enable traders bring in their goods into the country and empower customs to collect import duty thereafter,” he explained.

Also speaking, a trader and member of the forum, Hamza Saleh Jibiya, said since the closure of the border, about 2,000 containers laden with perishable and non-perishable goods have been trapped and cannot be cleared due to the closure

“The average value of a container is between $20,000 to $70,000 which in our estimation will be about N140bn trapped in those containers.

Flooding, A Disaster that has come to stay

by Folarin Kehinde August 14, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Egwuje Dorcas

Nigeria, despite her economic, political and financial prowess still battles with flooding, a disaster that is no longer news as every year, the government, citizens and major stakeholders look forward to another disaster waiting to ravage the nation.

While the meteorological agencies predicts cases of emerging floods both nationally and internationally, the country and her citizens still loose billions of dollars to the disaster including lives that would have been saved.

What is more worrisome however is, why would there be preventive measures rather than curative?

According to report, the 2022 flood was the worse ever recorded since 2012, which affected many parts of the country. From the Federal Government Data, the floods had displaced over 1.4 million people, killed over 603 people, and injured more than 2,400 persons. About 82,035 houses had been damaged, and 332,327 hectares of land had also been affected.

Recently, Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) warned that at least 31 communities across 14 states of Nigeria would experience heavy downpours that may lead to devastating floods. They urged stakeholders to take precautionary measures to forestall its impact.

This looks like a deja vu of last year’s experience when floods ravaged many communities across different regions of Nigeria. The floods were described as the worst in decades. According to the Federal Government of Nigeria, it claimed over 600 lives, displaced over 1.3 million people and more than 200,000 houses damaged.

While there are many other causes of flood, especially in Nigeria, it is important to understand the critical role that climate change plays in the entire flooding episode. There is no doubt that climate change has contributed immensely to incessant precipitation. This is basically caused by unusual warmth around the planet, leading to warmer ocean waters and more moisture in the atmosphere thereby producing rains that could lead to flooding. Thus, don’t be surprised when the same drainage system that contained the penultimate year’s rain is unable to contain this year’s downpour.

With the unpredictable nature of climate change across the world and the fact that the phenomenon has come to stay, there is no better time to educate young people, communities, schools, and community-based organisations on how to mitigate the potentially devastating impact of climate change, especially how it affects developing countries like Nigeria.

While there are general geography subjects in secondary schools, this is an opportunity to review the curriculum to include practical courses related to climate change and how it impacts even the school and surrounding environments. This can be achieved via laboratory sessions, showing how climate change can lead to flooding and how it can be mitigated. While schools are used to excursions to fancy and historical locations, an empirical experience of locations that have been or are vulnerable to flooding due to climate change will also go a long way in improving understanding of the process. Beyond experience-sharing sessions in schools, educating students on climate change could also trigger service projects supported by educational trust funds amongst others.

Community-based organizations also have a responsibility to educate members of their communities on actions to take in order to mitigate the negative impact of climate change. There is a need to integrate social and behavioural change communications into strategic programming on climate change to ensure beneficiaries take necessary actions that can help mitigate impacts like flooding. For instance, training on action points can be stepped down to traditional, religious rulers and other community influencers in a bid to promote more compliance among citizens of vulnerable communities.

Beyond just flooding as an important effect of climate change, there are immense opportunities to develop a comprehensive toolkit on every other aspect of human endeavours that climate change can potentially influence. A climate change education repertoire will not just decentralise knowledge about the potential impact but will prompt the right actions to prevent the escalation of any negative impact.

Citizens who are mostly affected should prioritize their safety by not building on water-ways or dumping refuse indiscriminately on dredges and all adhere to all government instructions.

Governments at all levels must take intentional steps by investing in both human and financial resources to decentralize climate change education ensuring climate change effects are cushioned. Thus, ministries, agencies and departments must develop a strategic framework and put the right structures in place to enable individuals, groups and communities to take effective action to mitigate the effects of climate change.

It time however for the government at all levels, stakeholders and citizens begin preventive measures rather than wait headlong for another flood to consume us all.

[14/08, 07:06] Mr Tayo: UK Warns Of Possible Terrorist Attack In Sweden

The UK Foreign Office on Sunday warned UK citizens of a growing threat of terrorist attacks in Sweden.

The office alerted the citizens that such attacks could happen in places that are frequently visited by foreigners.

“Terrorists are very likely to try and carry out attacks in Sweden.

“Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by foreigners,” the ministry said.

There is overall a “heightened threat of terrorist attacks globally against UK interests and British nationals” emanating from “groups or individuals motivated by the conflict in Iraq and Syria,” the statement read.

Swedish National Security Advisor Henrik Landerholm said the Swedish government and law enforcement bodies were monitoring the events and working with international partners to counter the spread of hate messages about Sweden.

On Thursday, Swedish police chief of counter-terrorism, Magnus Sjoberg, said that Sweden, along with Denmark and the Netherlands, had become a target of terrorist groups after it allowed demonstrations in its territory involving the burning of the Quran.

Several Quran-burning demonstrations have taken place in Denmark and Sweden in recent months.

Pastor Ashimolowo quits preaching after 40 years, commences real estate business

by Folarin Kehinde August 14, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

After preaching the Christian gospel for over 40 years, Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo, founder of Kingsway International Christian Centre, KICC, has found a new calling: real estate business.

Unknown to many, the televangelist has retired from full-time Christian ministry and is now one of the biggest land owners in Lagos. Although he has been acquiring real estate from the age of 27 when he aquired a small parcel of land, he expanded it to include about 900 acres of land in the Mowe area of Ogun State, where he built six estates before moving on to aquire more parcels of land in Ibeju Lekki coastal area of Lagos.

In addition to owning several properties in Pinnoch Estate, Lekki, Lagos, where he lives, in a luxurious, smart-enabled mansion, he also owns several acres of land scattered around Lagos where he is making a kill.

He is currently building one of the biggest luxury estates in Lagos via his Makarios Luxury Properties. The luxury estate known as Makarios:

The Luxury Place, is a dream city as he would like to call it, a world class project, an absolutely outstanding luxury place to live in that he hopes will rival the Dubai Marina. It sits on 95 acres of land where many rich people are now buying service plots.

The estate, which is being constructed by a German company, will feature about 11 number, 10 floor high-rise buildings, 192 terrace houses, 18 detached houses at completion. He has earmarked almost 300 parcels of land on the luxury estate for sale. While he has a full-time pastor managing the Lagos branch of his church, his first son, Tobi, is in charge of the London branch and headquarters of the church. He is ably assisted to ensure the smooth running of the church by his wife, Pastor Yemisi.

This affords him the opportunity to expend enough time and energy on his real estate business and complete the Makarios: The Luxury Place in record time. When he is not busy holding online early morning preachings and dishing out prophetic declarations, the 71-year-old finds time to impact knowledge on the real estate business.

‘We Saw Increase Of N1000, Not N10000’ —Imo NLC Begs Uzodinma To Implement Salary Review

by Folarin Kehinde August 14, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) Imo State chapter has lamented to the State Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma over the non-increment in the salaries of workers.

This was contained in a letter written to the state governor, dated 10th of August 2023 and signed by the Union’s Chairman, Rev Dr. Nwansi Phillip.

The governor had in July raised the minimum wage of workers in Imo State from N30,000 to N40,000, a step he took to cushion the effect of subsidy removal from petrol.

“There shall be an immediate upward review of the salaries and wages of workers in the state. The minimum wage is hereby raised to N40,000 with discretionary consequential adjustments,” the governor had said.

But the reviewed salary is yet to be implemented as the state chapter of the NLC in its letter said that there has been many complaints from Imo workers on the implementation of the new minimum wage.

It said, “The leadership of Organized Labour in Imo State wish to humbly bring your notice sir on the above subject matter and to inform you that there has been a lot of reports among the Imo workers on the implementation of the pronounced N40,000 minimum wage and its consequential adjustment from GL 07 to GL 14 to cushion the negative effect on the removal of the fuel subsidy . “

Phillips said that most workers in grade level 07 to grade level 14 saw no addition in their salary, while some saw just an increase of N1000

The letter added, “Since after the last salary payment for the month of July 2023 for most workers of the state mainly from Grade Level 07 to Grade Level 14, there has been reports of no addition in the net salary of the category of these workers . It was expected that addition of extra N10,000 to the National Minimum Wage of N30,000 and it consequential adjustment could have added much increase to the net take home of most of these workers.

“It is also observed that the only additions on the salary of workers this cadre is less than N1,000 and some no addition at all thereby painting the good intentions of Your Excellency of alleviating the pains of Imo State workers due to the removal of the fuel subsidy.

“The leadership of Organized Labour in Imo State is very appreciative of Your Excellency’s kind gesture to improve the welfare of Imo State workers including the palliatives the Governor rolled out to cushion the effect of suffering of workers as a result of the increase of cost of living in the country .

“We therefore suggest that a Committee of Government and Labour be set up to consummate it into a Government Salary table . This will enable each workers of the State know how the increase has reflected on their take home since the only salary table in place in the State is the 2011 National minimum Wage of N20, 000 .

Niger Coup: ‘Send me as Peace offering to Ibrahim Traore’ Cossy tells ECOWAS

by Folarin Kehinde August 14, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

While the ECOWAS forces are set for military action against the coupists in Niger, Nigerian actress and singer, Cossy Ojiakor has her sights on Burkina Faso’s military ruler, Ibrahim Traore, saying she can be used as a peace offering sent to him.

Cossy openly confessed her love for the Burkinabe leader, crushing on him with some seductive words.

“I love this man, Ibrahim Traore. He is so cute, intelligent and brave. Incase Nigeria/ECOWAS want to send a peace offering to him, I am available. I present myself as a peace offering. Will he take me? Africa really has good looking, brave men, tall, dark and handsome, ” she said.

“Nigeria, an oil producing nation does not have a refinery. Our Nigerian men are not that brave. Especially, all those politicians in Nigeria, most of them are just good in girls matter.

They have coconut heads. I don’t want to mention names.

Recall that when the Chibok girls’ abduction by Boko Haram was still fresh, Cossy had offered herself as a sacrifice for their release.

“Pray that God kill me if I use demonic powers’, Adeboye tell worshippers

by Folarin Kehinde August 12, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

In an apparent move to silence some of his critics who say he uses demonic power to do miracles, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye has asked that God would take his life if their claim is true.

He made the prayers at the ongoing convention of the church in the early hours of Saturday, August 12 while also urging the congregation to pray in that direction.

Adeboye who said he never wanted to respond to his critics, said he had to reconsider his stance because according to him, “some people may believe their claims.”

He said he got to know that some people were saying on the internet that he uses demonic powers to do miracles and carry out some of his operations on Redemption Camp.

His words, “Usually I don’t like responding to some so-called prophets especially when they talk about me. I just ignore them. But I got to know that some of them are saying that I use some demonic powers to perform miracles.

“I did not want to respond to them. But when I was praying about three days ago, I felt the leading that some people might believe the claims of these people. I now felt that we need to put an end to this. So I will ask you to pray that if I consult any devil anywhere that God will kill me before sunrise.”

The RCCG G.O. also urged the congregation to pray that if his critics are wrong in their claim that he uses demonic powers, God will increase the power in his life sevenfold.

The congregation rose in unison to make the double prayer requests.
