CITAD launches book to mitigate impact, response to vaccination in Nigeria

by Folarin Kehinde August 18, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) on Friday launched a book documenting the COVID-19 Vaccination Experiences of Northern States in Nigeria to mitigate impact and response to vaccine acceptance in the country.

Executive Director, CITAD Dr. Yunusa Ya’u represented at the book launch by the Coordinator Public Education of COVID-19 Vaccine, Hamza Ibrahim stated the book is important to decipher the issues of disinformation and misinformation regarding response to vaccine.

Ya”u, noted that during the last COVID-19 pandemic that ravaged the nation, people were reluctant to accept the vaccines due to rumors about its effect which was widely spread on social media.

He further explained that the issue of hesitancy is not only around COVID-19 vaccine, but it’s also around immunisation and a host of others hence the need to document
experiences regarding vaccination exercise in the 19 Northern states while taking into consideration various hindrances and challenges specific to the entire states.

His words:

“The prevalent misinformation or disinformation or hindrance to accepting the COVID-19 will be different from one state to another. And we think this, if documented, can help in future initiatives aimed at addressing the future pandemics.

“So these are experiences of vaccination exercises from nineteen to northern states. And they are beautiful experiences because they have been collated from the primary health care development agencies.

“There are many issues and this is the reason why we came up with this book, and we highlighted the number of strategies that different states developed and has worked for them in the vaccination exercises.”

He added that the book will serve as a learning tool and serve as a way for people to respond to vaccination issues in future.

“In case anything comes up in the future, this book really vital, it is well-detailed with several strategies that can help to respond to vaccination issues.

“Today we are happy to say that we are formally unveiling the book to be distributed to different states and libraries for people to read and benefit from what has been implemented”.

Adeleke Hoarding 3,000 Bags Of Rice From Osun Residents– APC State Chairman Lament

by Folarin Kehinde August 18, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

A dispute has ensued between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Osun State Government regarding the alleged withholding of palliatives by the Federal Government aimed at mitigating the impacts of the removal of fuel subsidies.

The leadership of the APC in Osun State, represented by its state chairman, Tajudeen Lawal, voiced their concerns on Thursday, accusing the state government of holding onto 3,000 bags of rice meant for residents for twelve days.

According to Lawal, “It was authoritatively learnt that five trader-loads of rice with other items donated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration were sent to the Osun State Government as the state shares of the people’s palliatives to cushion the effect of the biting effect of the subsidy removal on fuel. Up till today, the state government has not deemed it fit to announce the federal government gifts as palliatives for the people of the state.”

“I can’t fathom the reason why Governor Adeleke is finding it difficult to announce the arrival of the federal government palliatives to the state and also why it has been pretty difficult to distribute same. Is Governor Adeleke waiting for the people of the state to die of hunger before he deems it fit to make the palliatives available to serve its purpose at the right time?”

“Adeleke is trying to play fast politics on the palliatives from Abuja by inscribing ‘Imole De Rice’ on it. We shall resist it by all legal means. I wonder if Governor Adeleke and his co-travellers are not ashamed that his government is nauseatingly too slow on the handling of the palliatives for the people of the state when other states have since finished distribution and even started the second batch of cash transfer of =N=10,000 to citizens and civil servants. “

He added that “Adeleke must bring out the palliative rice from Abuja that he has been hoarding if his government is finding it difficult to provide its own palliatives for the people of the state.”

But contrary to these claims, the Osun State Government dismissed the allegations from the opposition party.

The Osun Commissioner for Information, Kolapo Alimi, clarified, “Federal government approved a total of three thousand bags of rice palliatives to Osun state. Six hundred bags were loaded per each truck and disbursed through four trailers: making two thousand and four hundred received so far.

He explained further that, “Out of the five trailers of bags of rice palliative to the state, we are waiting for the completion of the palliative supply before the announcement and distribution. Members of the public are also informed that the Commissioner of Ministry of Special Duties, Dr B.T Salaam has received four out of the five trailers and the state is awaiting the last batch of six hundred bags of rice palliatives, to complete the three thousand bags earmarked for the state.

“Governor Ademola Adeleke is a passionate and accountable governor who will never hurt or deprive the citizenry of its palliative. The governor is concerned about the welfare of the populace, and will not fail in its delivery.”

Godwin Emefiele breaks down in tears as court postpones arraignment for fraud

by Folarin Kehinde August 17, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The suspended CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele was in tears on Thursday as the High court of the Federal Capital Territory adjourned his arraignment to 23rd August, 2023.

The arraignment which was initially scheduled for Thursday was stalled due to the absence of some of the defendants joined in the charge.

Emefiele who was present in court, was charged alongside Sa’adatu Yaro, a female CBN employee, and her company, April1616 Investment Limited, on 20 charges bordering on procurement fraud, conspiracy and conferring corrupt advantages.

On July 25, he was arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on “illegal possession” of firearms at a federal high court in Ikoyi and was granted bail in the sum of N20 million.

Nicholas Oweibo, the judge, had ordered that Emefiele be kept in the custody of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions.

But the DSS insisted that Emefiele must return to its custody — a development that led to the face-off between the secret police and prison officials.

After the face-off, DSS rearrested Emefiele on the court premises.

The secret service proceeded to file an application before a high court of the federal capital territory seeking to further detain the suspended CBN governor.

The application was struck out after it was withdrawn by the service over jurisdictional concerns.

On August 3, the federal government also filed an application before the federal high court in Lagos, seeking leave to appeal against the order granting bail to Emefiele.

Again, FCT indigenes hope dashed as Wike becomes first Southerner to be appointed FCT Minister in 47 years

by Folarin Kehinde August 17, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

With the appointment of former Governor of Rivers, Nyesom Wike Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday, it marks the first time a southerner is appointed into such position in 47 years.

The first time a southerner to be appointed as FCT minister was in 1976 when former military head of state, Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo appointed Mobolaji Ajose-Adeogun.

Ajose-Adeogun was appointed by a southerner into that position, so also is Wike, who was appointed by a southern president, Tinubu as FCT minister.

According to a former presidential spokesman, Reno Omokri, “it has taken forty-seven years for a non-Northerner to occupy that position again and coincidentally, just like in 1976, the person was appointed by a fellow Southerner.

“Sadly, the original indigenes of the area now known as the Federal Capital Territory have never been appointed minister.

“Hopes had been high that the President would appoint the first FCT indigene ever nominated as a minister, Zephaniah Jisalo, to that position. But we have seen the way the cookie crumbled.”

Tinubu to swear in new ministers Monday

by Folarin Kehinde August 17, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Tinubu will on Monday swear in the new ministers who have just been assigned portfolios.

According to a statement by the office of the secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), the ceremony will take place in the conference room of the State House at 10 am.

William Bassey, the director of information in the office of the SGF, who signed the statement, said the ministers are to come with two guests each.

Earlier, the presidency released the list containing the names of the new ministers and their portfolios.

In the list, Nyesom Wike is appointed as the minister of the federal capital territory (FCT).

Wike is the second southerner to head the FCT after Ajose Adeogun, the only person from the region, who was appointed in 1976.

The president appointed Gboyega Oyetola, former governor of Osun, as the minister of transportation.

The list shows that the north-west has 10 ministers, while north-east has six. The north-central and south-west have eight and nine ministers respectively, while south-east and south-south have five each.

According to the portfolios assigned by the president, Tinubu made Bosun Tijani the minister of communications, innovations and digital economy and Wale Edun the person heading the ministry of finance and coordinating minister of economy.

On July 27, Tinubu forwarded a list of 28 nominees to the senate for screening and confirmation.

Again, on August second, the president sent the list of the second batch of ministerial nominees to the senate for screening.

While the senate confirmed the nomination of 45 persons on the list, three nominees, including Nasir el-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna — Stella Okotete (Delta) and Danladi Abubakar (Taraba), were not confirmed due to issues relating to security clearance.

‘We shot down NAF jet in Niger’ terrorist boasts

by Folarin Kehinde August 16, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

A suspected notorious terrorist, Dogo Gide, and his members have claimed responsibility for shooting down a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) helicopter near Chukuba Ward in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

Gide, and his group are little known to Nigerians before yesterday. The group sent out a viral video allegedly recorded at the site of Monday’s Air Force jet crash, claiming responsibility for the accident.

In the less-than-three minutes clip, the terrorists claimed they killed dozens of soldiers on the plane.

The video showed terrorists wielding AK-47s. The aircraft had the inscription NAF 582.

The narrator said: “These are bodies belonging to soldiers of the Nigerian Army who attacked us with the intention of causing us harm.

“They did this to see the downfall of Dogo Gide and by God’s grace, he is still alive and won’t die.

“These are dozens of soldiers as you can see them. This is their airplane. Repent, we have no business with anyone except those who try to come for us. This is God’s work. We used an AK-47 to bring down this plane.

“Take a look at them. Let this be a lesson. You all should repent. It is not our intention to kill but for everyone to be enlightened and have the fear of God. Leaders who sent these soldiers our way to be killed by us should repent.

“We won’t surrender from pressure or even an aeroplane. Dogo Gide, who is their target, won’t die now. He is still alive. These are the AK-47s we used to bring down this plane.

“N2 million ‘enjoyment allowance’ for senators too small” – Says Ogun PDP Senatorial Candidate

by Folarin Kehinde August 16, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

According to PDP candidate David Aderinokun for the Ogun Central Senatorial District, N2 million is too little for a senator in Nigeria to receive as a vacation allowance.

This was mentioned by Aderinokun on Tuesday in a post made using his verified X handle.

“The $2 million that was given to senators is not a big deal,” he said. Even a senator would find it inadequate. What can a family guy buy with $2,000? Why do we make a big deal out of it.

“But they ought not to have made it widely known. Making it public is a little inconsiderate to Nigerians’ plight, he continued.

Recall that the Senate President Godwill Akpabio, during a special plenary session of the screening and confirmation of President Bola Tinubu’s ministerial nominees, had informed the senators that the Clerk to the National Assembly (CNA), Magaji Tambuwal, had wired money into their individual bank accounts in order to enjoy their annual holiday.

Akpabio had said, “In order to enable all of us to enjoy our holidays, a token has been sent to our various accounts by the Clerk of the National Assembly…,”
The Senate President’s statement met with interruptions from the senators, who were apparently dissatisfied with Akpabio’s public disclosure.

Akpabio, however, took a pause as he withdrew the statement, while he rephrased the information.
“In order to enjoy your holidays, the Senate President has sent prayers to your mailboxes to assist you to go on a safe journey and return,” Akpabio said in the alternative to calm down frayed nerves.

BREAKING: Nigeria’s inflation hits 24.08% as food prices rise

by Folarin Kehinde August 15, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nigeria’s annual inflation rate rose to 24.08 per cent in July from 22.79 per cent in the previous month, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Tuesday.

The NBS said on a year-on-year basis, the headline inflation rate was 4.44 per cent points higher compared to the rate recorded in July 2022, which was 19.64 per cent.

“This shows that the headline inflation rate (year-on-year basis) increased in July 2023 when compared to the same month in the preceding year (i.e., July 2022),” it said.

According to the report, the food inflation rate increased to 26.98 per cent in July from 25.25 per cent in June.

Although the prices of food have been on the rise across Nigeria in recent years, the situation deteriorated due to the impact of government policies such as the removal of subsidy on petrol, among others.

On 29 May, during his inauguration, President Tinubu announced the removal of subsidy on petrol. This development has caused hardship for many Nigerians with its attendant increase in the prices of goods and services.

Apart from the removal of subsidy, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) also announced the unification of all segments of the forex exchange (FX) market as part of efforts to engender transparency in the markets and boost investors’ confidence.

The policy has been widely applauded as well-intentioned and necessary but it has put additional pressure on the local currency and manufacturers, with ripple effects on prices.

Inflation has remained high in Africa’s largest economy, prompting the apex bank to hike interest rates to their highest levels in nearly two decades.

In July, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), raised its benchmark lending rate to 18.75 per cent.

The bank said, “hiking the interest rate has made a lot of difference in moderating the rate of inflation”.

It noted that the option to continue the hike in the policy rate, albeit moderately, also presented a strong alternative premised on the expected liquidity injections into the economy from the recent efforts to unify the nation’s foreign exchange markets.

JAMB staff to spend 6 months in prison for stealing laptop, blames the devil

by Folarin Kehinde August 14, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

A Magistrate Court in Kado- Life Camp Abuja has sentenced a contract staff of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to six months in jail for stealing a laptop belonging to the board.

The culprit, Emmanuel Odey, allegedly stole the laptop on Thursday, 13 July 2023 at the board’s Zonal Office in Abuja, contravening Section 287-289 of the Penal Code.

This was revealed in JAMB’s weekly bulletin which was published on Monday.

The bulletin read in part, “Odey, a cleaner employed for cleaning services at the Board’s FCT Zonal Office, broke down in tears and admitted before the court to stealing the HP laptop worth N350,000 to pay his house rent that has expired.

“While pleading for leniency, he confessed that he had acted alone but blamed the devil for his act and begged to be given a second chance. “

According to the bulletin, during the court proceedings, the senior magistrate Egbe Joshua recognized that Odey was a first-time offender and that he had shown remorse for his crime.

“The defendant, a first-time offender, had shown remorse and had not wasted the precious time of the court and recognized youthful exuberance as a possible factor in the crime.

“The Senior Magistrate summarily tried and convicted the defendant under Section 112(8) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, and sentenced him to six months imprisonment with an option of a fine of five thousand naira, ” it added.

The Board added that in an earlier bid to find the missing HP laptop, it set up an investigating team headed by Superintendent of Police, Joy Abuma, whose “painstaking investigation” led to the arrest of the defendant and his eventual confession that he had hidden the laptop at his sister’s residence.
