FCT Primary School Teachers Begin Strike Over Unpaid Arrears

by Folarin Kehinde September 11, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The FCT wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has directed its members across the six area councils to embark on an industrial strike from today; September 11, over non-payment of 25 months arrears.

They are also protesting the non-implementation of a 40 per cent peculiar allowance by the council chairmen.

The union gave the directive in a communique issued at the end of its emergency State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) meeting held at Teachers’ House in Gwagwalada.

The communique was jointly signed by the NUT state chairman, Comrade Stephen Knabayi, and secretary, Margaret F. Jethro.

The communique added that the council chairmen had also failed to pay other outstanding allowances, which they said included non-implementation of promotion arrears, non-upgrading of concerned teachers, non-implementation of annual increments, non-implementation of promotion letters released for teachers, among others.

“And having explored and exhausted all available avenues of getting these outstanding demands of the concerned teachers met without the desired result including non-commitment of the councils to the welfare of primary school teachers, the SWEC in-session resolved to direct all primary school teachers to embark on an infinite strike action from Monday; September 11, 2023,” the communique read in part.

The union vowed not to call off the strike until its demands are met while calling on parents across the FCT to remain guided by keeping their wards and children safe at home.

Scientists Develop Artificial Kidney To Eliminate Dialysis, Transplant

by Folarin Kehinde September 11, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Scientists at the University of California, San Francisco, have created a device that could employ the human kidney cell in the lab and mimic some of its key functions, capable of eliminating the depressing kidney transplant and dialysis being undertaken in humans.

Sufferers of kidney diseases are often put through dialysis and transplant in some cases with high financial cost and in some cases poor results.

With an increasing number of sufferers on the waiting list, there have been concerted efforts to deepen research and bypass the strenuous existing management of one of the most vital organs of the human body.

To achieve this lofty feat, scientists at the University of California have advanced their research revealing via a statement on its website that the artificial kidney otherwise known as a bioreactor device could one day eliminate the necessity for dialysis or the need for harsh medicines to suppress the immune system following a transplant.

The device has been successfully tested in pigs for a week, according to the experts, with no evident side effects or concerns, adding that, “The next step will be month-long trials, as required by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), first in animals and eventually in humans.

The Kidney Project which is jointly headed by UCSF’s Shuyo Roy, PhD (technical director) and Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s William H. Fissell, MD (medical director), said the device can work silently in the background, like a pacemaker, and does not activate the recipient’s immune system to go on the attack.

Shuyo Roy, a Bioengineering Professor at the UCSF School of Pharmacy, said they are focused on safely replicating the key functions of a kidney.

The bioartificial kidney will make treatment for kidney disease more effective and also much more tolerable and comfortable, the creators have said.

“We needed to prove that a functional bioreactor will not require immunosuppressant drugs, and we did.

“We had no complications and can now iterate up, reaching for the whole panel of kidney functions at the human scale,” he noted

The statement read partly “Eventually, scientists plan to fill the bioreactor with different kidney cells that perform vital functions like balancing the body’s fluids and releasing hormones to regulate blood pressure – then pair it with a device that filters waste from the blood.

“The aim is to produce a human-scale device to improve on dialysis, which keeps people alive after their kidneys fail but is a poor substitute for having a real working organ.

“More than 500,000 people in the U.S. require dialysis several times a week. Many seek kidney transplants, but there are not enough donors, and only about 20,000 people receive them each year. An implantable artificial kidney would be a boon.”

G-20 Summit: Tinubu woos Volkswagen, other manufacturers back to Nigeria

by Folarin Kehinde September 11, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on the sideline of the G-20 summit in India, met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to boost Nigeria’s car manufacturing sector.

Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

Tinubu noted that expanding Nigeria’s economic partnership is vital to his administration.

He called on the German government to explore new incentives for foreign investments in Nigeria.

“It is not, for us, only a matter of designing the financial architecture for an expanded economic partnership. It is also about the practicality of aligning the perspectives of your large-scale manufacturers, such as Volkswagen and others, with the reality of the new incentives my government is putting in place for them to come and prosper across multiple value chains and sectors inside our country”.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz acknowledged the mutually beneficial nature of an escalation in the scale of economic ties with Nigeria.

“Thank you for this important discussion, Mr. President. I appreciate this opportunity to advance our economic relations. Your market is unique, and our companies have a history in Nigeria. We acknowledge the business-friendly reforms you have put in place. I am happy to inform you of my desire to visit you in Nigeria in October, which will allow us to carry forward these initiatives,” the German leader stated.

Tribunal sacks Imo Reps member, Ikenga Ugochinyere [DETAILS]

by Folarin Kehinde September 11, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Imo State National and State House of Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal has sacked a member of the House of Representatives, Ikenga Ugochinyere.

Ugochinyere contested the election under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The tribunal ordered a supplementary election within 90 days in the state as it declared that Ugochinyere was not qualified to contest the Ideato North/South Federal Constituency election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, declared Ugochinyere winner of the election with 13, 026 votes.

Obi Chigozie of the Labour Party, LP, came second with 5,696 votes, while the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Abazu Benson. came third with 2, 368 votes.

The APC candidate, Benson, approached the tribunal to seek a redress with a petition marked: EPT/IM/HR/10/2023.

INEC, Ugochinyere, PDP, candidate of the Labour Party, Obi Paschal Chigozie and his party, the LP, were listed as the 1st to 5th respondents.

In the petition, the APC candidate insisted that Ugochinyere was not qualified to run in the election and also argued that all the votes that were credited to him were wasted votes.

The APC candidate told the court that contrary to the provision of the Electoral Act 2022, the PDP conducted its primary election at a venue that was outside the constituency.

In a unanimous decision on Sunday, the three-member panel of the tribunal which conducted its proceedings in Nasarawa State, held that Ugochinyere was not validly nominated by the PDP to contest the election.

Delivering its judgement, chairman of the panel, Justice Anthony Akpovi, specifically directed the electoral umpire to conduct the supplementary poll within 90 days.

The tribunal also noted that the PDP and its candidate should be excluded from the supplementary election.

Niger military deploys forces at Beninese border against ECOWAS invasion

by Folarin Kehinde September 11, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

A video has emerged indicating that the Niger republic’s coupists have started deploying military along its border with neighbouring country, Benin, amidst imminent military intervention by the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS.

The development was disclosed by a counter-insurgency expert and security analyst in Lake Chad, Zagazola Makama.

Leading reporters recalls that ECOWAS had threatened a possible military action against the junta who seized power in Niger and suspended the constitution.

Last month, ECOWAS ordered its standby force to restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger.

The order followed the resolution of ECOWAS on the Niger coup after its extraordinary meeting in Abuja.

However, the regional bloc’s army is yet to invade Niger.

Makama on his social media platform X, on Monday, posted a video that showed Niger’s military were deploying at Beninese border in preparation against the military intervention by the ECOWAS.

“Niger deploys Military to the Niger- Beninese Border amidst eminent Military intervention plans of ECOWAS,” he wrote.

Man stabs friend to death over food in Lagos

by Folarin Kehinde September 8, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

A man identified as John has lost his life after his friend, Akinola Adeleye, allegedly stabbed him to death over an argument on who to pay for a plate of food.

Punch reports that the incident happened in the Ifako Ijaiye Local Government Area of Lagos State.

It was gathered that the two men had a misunderstanding over who should pay for the plate of meal Akinola had eaten, and in the course of the argument that degenerated into a fight, Akinola stabbed John to death with a knife.

Some residents in the area said that the sad event happened two weeks ago on Idiagbon Street adjacent to the local government headquarters.

It was further gathered that the victim had been squatting in the suspect’s house when they had the fallout over who would pay for a plate of food.

A resident in the area, Ugochukwu, who narrated what happened, said, “It happened that Akinola went and ate a plate of food in their usual buka, and after eating, instead of paying, he asked them to add his bill to the account of his friend who wasn’t there with him at that time.

“So, when the victim went to eat at the local restaurant, they informed him that he owed them for the food his friend ate. He was surprised and angry that his friend would ask them to bill him without telling him about it.

“So, he quickly finished his meal and went home to confront his friend about the debt that was passed down to him. That was how they started quarrelling. As they were fighting over the matter, Akinola, out of anger, asked John to pack out of his house immediately but John refused, and the fight intensified.

“Before anyone knew what was happening, Akinola left the scene of the fight, rushed back with a knife and stabbed John. We had assumed the fight was over when Akinola left, only for us to see him rush at John with the knife.

“Before we could do anything, John was on the ground, and blood was gushing out from his body. Everywhere became scattered in confusion.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident, adding that the suspect had already been taken to the State Criminal Investigations Department.
