by Folarin Kehinde November 20, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Finland aims to increase work-based migration to 30,000 individuals annually, as the country has been actively encouraging international workers to address the growing labour crisis through its initiatives.

Some of the initiatives include the ‘Work in Finland’ and ‘Talent Boost’ programs and it has also positioned itself as a hub of opportunities for researchers, and innovators.

Laura Lindeman, Senior Director and Head of Work in Finland at Business Finland highlighted the initiatives that facilitate the influx of skilled and tech-savvy professionals on a global scale.

She underscored Finland’s commitment to global connectivity, recognizing international talents as valuable contributors to building connections with the rest of the world by attracting a diverse workforce, and promoting internationalization, innovation, and company growth.

Finland wants to attract talent and generate growth, internationalization, and well-being in collaboration with a diverse, international workforce,” Lindeman said.

“The Finnish society is aging; therefore, the country needs more young people to join the labor market”, Glenn Gassen, Director of Immigration Affairs, Helsinki.

According to the Finnish government, the country is proactively backing startups, providing stability, transparency, and resources. The thriving startup ecosystem is further bolstered by numerous accelerators, incubators, venture capital funds, and initiatives like the Finnish Startup Permit and funding opportunities.

Nairametrics learns that to address labor shortages in the startup ecosystem, Finland is specifically targeting talent in sectors such as ICT, digitalization, cleantech, and the social and health sectors, given the challenges posed by an aging population.

Nigeria faces alarming rice shortage as prices surge by over 37% in 2023

by Folarin Kehinde November 20, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

A report from the AFEX Wet Season Crop Production Report for 2023 has unveiled a pressing issue in Nigeria – the exponential rise in rice consumption has far outstripped local production, resulting in an annual shortfall of approximately two million metric tonnes.

Punch reports that this imbalance has led to an eye-watering surge of over 37 per cent in the price of rice within the year.

The report sheds light on the relentless surge in rice consumption, closely mirroring the annual population growth projection of 2.6 per cent, hovering at an alarming two per cent.

“Rice consumption in Nigeria has been steadily increasing, aligning with the consistent growth of the rice market, nearly matching the annual population growth projection of 2.6 per cent at two per cent. This has led to a supply gap of about 2 million metric tonnes annually,” the report noted.

Nigeria has expended a staggering $15 billion over the last decade to fulfil its burgeoning rice consumption needs despite its potential to become a net rice exporter, as highlighted by the report.

Due to various critical factors, rice prices have skyrocketed to their highest levels in nearly 12 years. India’s ban on rice exports and the potentially disruptive effects of El Nino on production in vital regions have significantly contributed to this global price hike.

Moreover, disruptions from rain-induced issues and quality inconsistencies during Vietnam’s summer-autumn harvest have compounded these price fluctuations.

Domestically, the spike in rice prices, surging by over 37 per cent year-to-date, can be traced back to reduced production in 2022, primarily influenced by severe flooding during that year’s wet season.

The report also cites flooding and the consequential impact of global market dynamics as key drivers for escalating rice prices in Nigeria.

Despite these challenges, the report offers a glimmer of hope, forecasting a potential 4 per cent increase in rice production and an estimated up to 32 per cent increment in the price of paddy rice.

Notably, the production of milled paddy rice has witnessed a substantial uptick, surpassing 35 per cent in the country, with an estimated output of 5.4 million metric tonnes in 2022—a marked surge from 3.9 million metric tonnes in 2015.

Although rice cultivation spans all agroecological zones in Nigeria, the Northwest region claims the lion’s share, contributing a substantial 72 per cent of the total rice production in the country.

Experts say this supply-demand imbalance presents a critical challenge for Nigeria, underscoring the urgent need for strategies to bridge the gap between rice consumption and local production to ensure food security and stabilize prices for this staple commodity.

Edo guber: Obaseki is an experimental governor, says Shaibu, declares to run in 2024

by Folarin Kehinde November 20, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu has dared his boss, Governor Godwin Obaseki, by declaring to run for the governorship position.

The Deputy Governor, who has been at daggers drawn with his boss, unfolded his ambition to become next governor on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Explaining why he threw his hat into the ring, Philip, who was recently evicted from the Deputy Governor’s Lodge, said “Edo needs a practical leader.”

He suggested that Obaseki, who has governed the State for close to 8 years now, was an experimental governor.

Addressing reporters in Benin City, Philip said, “With the 2024 Edo governorship election fast approaching, the state cannot afford to experiment again with someone who does not understand the politics of the state or the needs of the people.

“Edo people need practical governance and you cannot experiment again with somebody that does not understand the politics of a good state and the needs of the people.

“So, everything we have to do should be assessed. You cannot know the needs of the people when you don’t live with them. So for me, competence and experience should be the watchwords as we go into the election in 2024.

“Who is competent? Who is more experienced? Who will hit the ground running from day one?

“Are we going to experiment with a new person again? And the person will spend the first four years learning on the job and he will spend another four years trying to embezzle, set up his businesses in the name of consolidating on the gains of the first term.

“Or do we need a governor that from day one will hit the ground running?”

“No Student Will Drop Out of School Under my Government”, President Tinubu assures

by Folarin Kehinde November 20, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that no student drops out of tertiary institutions due to financial constraints.

Speaking at the 33rd convocation ceremony of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) in Ondo State on Saturday, President Tinubu emphasised his government’s dedication to addressing the challenges facing higher education in Nigeria.

The President, represented by Professor King-David Terna Yawe of the National University Commission (NUC), acknowledged the difficulties facing the education sector but highlighted the steps his administration is taking to alleviate these concerns. He pointed to the Student Loan Bill, signed into law shortly after his inauguration, as a testament to his government’s commitment to supporting students.

“My government will not shirk its responsibilities in this area,” President Tinubu said. “We will guarantee that educational institutions receive the necessary resources to effectively carry out their statutory responsibilities. One of my first actions as President of Nigeria was to sign the Student Loan Bill into law to put this into action.”

He elaborated on the provisions of the bill, explaining that it will provide interest-free loans to financially challenged students in all tertiary institutions. These loans will be repaid at the students’ convenience upon securing employment.

“Under my leadership, and as I have outlined in my manifesto, no student will be forced to drop out of school due to an inability to pay tuition,” President Tinubu declared.

Earlier in the ceremony, FUTA Vice Chancellor Prof Adenike Temidayo Oladiji expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his unwavering support of the education sector. She commended his efforts to enhance the quality of education and make it accessible to all Nigerians.

PDP Responsible for Governor Mutfwang’s Sack by Appeal Court, not Tinubu – Presidency

by Folarin Kehinde November 20, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Presidency has blamed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for its failure to adhere to legal processes, which ultimately led to the sacking of Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State by the Court of Appeal.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, pointed out that the PDP’s decision to use an illegal caretaker committee to conduct primaries in Plateau State, despite a court order, was the root cause of the governor’s downfall.

“The PDP should take full responsibility for this avoidable electoral setback,” Onanuga asserted. “Their blatant disregard for the law and their failure to learn from past mistakes have cost them dearly.”

Onanuga drew parallels between the Plateau governor’s ouster and the 2019 loss of Zamfara State by the All Progressives Congress (APC) due to similar irregularities.

“In 2019, the APC lost all elected positions in Zamfara State because of illegal primaries,” Onanuga recalled. “The PDP, instead of learning from this experience, chose to repeat the same mistakes, resulting in the nullification of Governor Mutfwang’s election.”

The Special Adviser added, “Non-compliance with the electoral law and the constitution is also at the root of the nullification of the election of Kano governor, Abba Yusuf. Those blaming the judiciary and being emotional about the ruling should face reality. Yusuf was sacked based on the law. I believe we all want our country to be guided by the rule of law.”

Christmas: Tips to Prevent Fire Occurrences during Hazy Weather

by Folarin Kehinde November 18, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

As the Christmas season approaches, it is essential to be aware of the prevailing weather conditions. One weather phenomenon that can significantly impact the festive atmosphere is haze.

This report aims to provide a comprehensive overview of hazy weather conditions and their implications during the Christmas period.

  1. Definition and Causes of Haze:
Haze is characterized by the presence of suspended particles, such as dust, smoke, and pollutants, in the atmosphere. It is primarily caused by human activities, including industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust, agricultural burning, and forest fires. These activities release pollutants, such as particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and volatile organic compounds, which contribute to the formation of haze.
  2. Impact on Visibility:
Hazy conditions significantly reduce visibility, leading to a blurred and obscured view of the surroundings. This can affect various aspects of daily life, including transportation, outdoor activities, and scenic views. During the Christmas season, reduced visibility due to haze can impact the enjoyment of outdoor decorations, light displays, and festive events.
  3. Health Implications:
Haze can have adverse effects on human health, particularly for individuals with respiratory conditions, the elderly, and young children. The fine particles present in haze can penetrate deep into the respiratory system, causing respiratory irritation, coughing, and exacerbating existing respiratory conditions such as asthma. Prolonged exposure to haze can also lead to more severe health issues, including respiratory infections and cardiovascular problems.
  4. Environmental Impact:
Haze not only affects human health but also has detrimental effects on the environment. The pollutants released during haze formation contribute to air pollution, which can harm ecosystems, vegetation, and wildlife. Additionally, haze can lead to acid rain, which further damages forests, lakes, and aquatic life.
  5. Measures to Mitigate Haze:
To address the issue of haze, various measures can be implemented. These include:

a. Strict enforcement of emission standards for industries and vehicles.
b. Promoting the use of cleaner energy sources and technologies.
c. Implementing sustainable agricultural practices to reduce open burning.
d. Conducting public awareness campaigns to educate individuals on the importance of reducing pollution and haze.

Health and Fire Tips to Prevent Occurrences during Hazy Weather:

  1. Health Precautions:
    a. Stay Indoors: During hazy conditions, it is advisable to stay indoors as much as possible, especially for individuals with respiratory conditions, the elderly, and young children. Indoor environments with proper air filtration systems can provide cleaner air and reduce exposure to haze particles.
    b. Use Air Purifiers: Consider using air purifiers with HEPA filters to improve indoor air quality and reduce the presence of haze particles.
    c. Wear N95 Masks: If you need to go outdoors, wearing N95 masks can help filter out fine particles and reduce inhalation of pollutants. Ensure that the mask fits properly and is worn consistently.
    d. Stay Hydrated: Hazy conditions can cause dryness and irritation in the respiratory system. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water to keep the respiratory passages moist.
    e. Monitor Air Quality Index (AQI): Stay informed about the air quality in your area by monitoring the AQI. Limit outdoor activities when the AQI reaches unhealthy levels.
  2. Fire Safety Precautions:
    a. Avoid Open Burning: During hazy conditions, it is crucial to avoid any form of open burning, including bonfires, campfires, and burning of waste materials. These activities can contribute to the release of pollutants and worsen the haze.
    b. Be Cautious with Candles: If you use candles for decorative purposes during the Christmas season, ensure they are placed in secure holders and kept away from flammable materials. Never leave candles unattended and extinguish them before leaving the room.
    c. Check Electrical Wiring: Inspect electrical wiring and connections to ensure they are in good condition. Faulty wiring can lead to electrical fires, which can be particularly dangerous during hazy conditions when visibility is reduced.
    d. Install Smoke Detectors: Make sure smoke detectors are installed in appropriate areas of your home. Regularly test and maintain them to ensure they are functioning correctly.
    e. Have Fire Extinguishers: Keep fire extinguishers readily available in your home, especially in areas prone to fire hazards such as the kitchen. Learn how to use them effectively and ensure they are regularly inspected and maintained.

During hazy weather conditions, taking necessary health precautions and implementing fire safety measures is crucial to ensure the well-being and safety of individuals. By staying indoors, using air purifiers, wearing masks, and monitoring air quality, one can minimize health risks associated with haze.

Additionally, practicing fire safety by avoiding open burning, being cautious with candles, checking electrical wiring, and having fire extinguishers can help prevent fire incidents during hazy conditions. Stay informed, prepared, and take proactive steps to protect yourself and your surroundings during the Christmas season.

by Folarin Kehinde November 18, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Despite technological innovations and the deploy of high tech components to deliver seamless service especially in banking to Nigerians, the delivery of such services often turn sour as seen in the current state of Access Bank Plc.

What is more worrisome however is the timing of such service collapse which often go on for days.

Residents of Abuja, the federal capital territory were seen in queues to make one complain or the other, while some lament the disruption from accessing access bank ussd code services, others lament the non-availability of network to make transactions.

A resident of the city who spoke on the condition anonymity lamented that he was suppose to pay his employees for service delivered but could not and has received lots of embarrassment in that regard.

Another customer, Saheed Akanni said he could not make any transaction and this has really affected his scheduled traveling for the weekend but had to shelve it.

The social community too on X is not finding the situation funny as many of them are currently lamenting the service disruption.

Without mincing words, the slogan of the bank, “Access. More than Banking”. is actually a mere say as instead of delivering more banking service, service disruption has become the order of the day for Access Bank Plc.
