Sanwo-Olu approves over N73 million for Tinubu’s portrait, N44 million for vegetables

by Folarin Kehinde November 21, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Available documents show that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has approved the sum of N73.1 million for the production of the official portraits of President Bola Tinubu.

The project which was executed by the office of the Chief of Staff was awarded to Flolizvi Connect.

Tinubu was sworn-in as President on May 29, 2023, after defeating Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Alhaji Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

Sanwo-Olu also started his second term tenure on the same date.

According to available information on the website of the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, there are less than 150 MDAs in Lagos.

Lagos State Government also approved the sum of N44.8 million for the clearing of vegetables within the Epe Mixed Development Scheme.

According to records from the state’s Public Procurement Agency (PPA), the project was awarded in May to M/S Obak Nigeria Enterprises by the Lagos State New Towns Development Authority.

According to report, Sanwo-Olu had also approved the sum of N7.5 million to replace liquid fragrance in his office and N3 billion to purchase rechargeable fans for the office of his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat.

Some public affairs analysts and netizens have described the governor’s action as insensitive to the plight of the people amid the current economic hardship in the country.

But this is just a tip of the iceberg as further checks revealed that some questionable spending was approved by the state government.

The office of the Chief of Staff also got approval of N80.8 million on June 19, 2023, for the procurement of ten units of foreign used vehicles.

The same office got approval of N440.75 million for the purchase of a brand new Lexus LX 600 Bulletproof Sport Utility Vehicle.

Also, the office got N18.5 million for the supply and distribution of 2,000 broiler chicken across the local government areas and wards in the state.

Again, 400 million was approved for flying hour expenses on an ad-hoc charter plane.

The government also approved N152 million for the restoration of water supply at Iduganran palace, the official residence of the Oba of Lagos.

Records also showed that the state approved N581 million to renovate Saint Andrews Anglican Church in Oke-Popo area of the state.

JUST IN: Panic as FHA reveals plan to demolish 677 Houses in Festac

by Folarin Kehinde November 21, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Housing Authority (FHA) has disclosed a plan to demolish 677 houses, while 744 others will be partially demolished over infringement by a developer in Phase 2, Festac Town, Amuwo-Odofin area of Lagos State.

FHA’s South-West Zonal Manager, Mr. Akintola Olagbemiro, disclosed this during a visit to the affected area to assess level of disregard to building codes and the environment.

According to Olagbemiro, despite letters and stakeholders’ meetings, the developers have continued to build on the swampy land without meeting the requirements.

He said: “After so many years of trying to get into the property belonging to FHA, which we labelled as Festac Phase 2. There has been encroachment and illegal development and it’s turning the place into a slum. We are trying to see how best we can resolve it and make people live in a more serene environment. Unfortunately, there have been cases of illegal developers and land grabbers.”

Deputy General Manager, FHA, Urban and Regional Planning, Southwest, Francisca Michael-James, said: “We have given the residents several notices but to our surprise, works are still going on, without regard to the law.

“Now we have the permission of our management and we will ask for security back up and start enforcement. We will start removing structures from the roads and those on pipelines set back.

“We will also remove the buildings constructed after the stakeholders’ meetings where we agreed that everyone should wait until we are done with our assessment but some of them continued to build and concluded that we will regularise, but regularisation is not automatic. Now, the ones that did not meet regularisation will have to go.”

Speaking on punishment for contravenors, she said: “In the law, if we demolish, we are supposed to penalise the owner of the building and charge for the fees for the cost of carrying out the operation. Assuming any of the buildings collapsed, the landlord will be charged for manslaughter but the first point of call will be pointing accusing fingers at the agency so, as to avoid that, that’s why we want to carry out the enforcement. The enforcement will be done soon.

“The first thing we are doing is to clear the road; some of the buildings will be partially demolished for right of way. 677 houses will be demolished and 744 will be demolished partially.”

Wike Fumes, Slams Bishop for Failing to Recognise Him as FCT Minister in Port Harcourt

by Folarin Kehinde November 21, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed his displeasure with the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Niger Delta, Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Oko-Jaja, for failing to acknowledge his presence as FCT Minister during a church service in Port Harcourt.

The incident occurred at the rededication service of the 2023/2024 Legal Year of the Rivers State Judiciary.

At the event with Wike was the State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, with the meeting serving as their first encounter since their fallout became public.

Wike, who was angry at not being recognised, warned that anyone who is not a politician should be careful not to be treated like one, emphasising that those who drag themselves into politics will be “rubbed in the mud of politics.”

“I saw the preaching; I was watching the preaching of Bishop Oko-Jaja yesterday. I watched the prayers you prayed,” Wike said.

“As a Minister of the FCT, I came to the church; not even the courtesy of recognizing that the Minister of FCT came in, and I laughed.”

He further stated that when he was Governor of Rivers State, the Anglicans were praising him.

“When I was Governor here you were all praising me here and there, saying I did this, I did that; fake!” Wike exclaimed.

Wike reiterated that he is a politician and not a clergy, and that they each have their own roles to play.

“I tell people. I am a politician and not a clergy. We have our own roles,” he said.

“As a clergy, you have your own role. I have never asked anybody how do you preach. I have never told anybody this is what to preach.”

Wike warned the clergy to be careful not to drag themselves into politics, as they would be subjected to the same treatment as politicians.

“If you are not a politician and don’t want what happens to politicians to happen to you, be careful. Because, once you drag yourself into politics, the mud will also be rubbed on you,” Wike said.

Meanwhile, the bishop delivered a sermon titled “Fear Not,” where he encouraged judicial officers to fearlessly uphold the truth in their duties and to overcome the spirit of fear.

“I Got N2m, Not N2bn For Rechargeable Fans”, Sanwo-Olu’s Deputy Breaks Silence

by Folarin Kehinde November 21, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, has faulted the claim by the Public Procurement Agency that his office got N2 billion to purchase rechargeable fans, rechargeable lights and fridges.

Hamzat in a memo addressed to the Director General of the procurement agency, said the approval for the project was N2m.

He also claimed that his wife got N2.5m each for her monthly outreach to indigents and empowerment programme as against the N30m captured by the agency.

Daily Trust reports that the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and his deputy, Hamzat, have come under criticism for approving N7.5 million to replace liquid fragrance in Sanwo-Olu’s office and N2bn to purchase rechargeable fans for the office of Hamzat.

However, Hamzat in a memo signed by Director, Finance and Account, Tola Ekemode on behalf the Permanent Secretary in the office of the deputy governor, said the report by the agency was untrue, mischievous, fake and unfounded.

“It is important to state that truly, the office did get approval and awarded the provision of supply items (rechargeable fans, rechargeable lights and fridges) for the sum of =N=2,017,840 (Two Million, Seventeen Thousand, Eight Hundred and Forty Naira) as against the =N=2,017,840,000 (Two Billion, Seventeen Million, Eight Hundred and Forty Thousand Naira as reported by Doherty in his purported letter

“In addition, the report that the office through the Wife of the Deputy Governor spent =N=30,000,000 monthly for outreach to indigents is inaccurate as the amount stated covered the whole year. It is =N=2,500,000 per month. Same for the Empowerment programme by the Wife of the Deputy Governor which also =N=2,500,000 per month as against =N=30,000,000 monthly reported,” read the memo.

He called on the agency to take immediate action to take prompt action in addressing the issue by giving the general public a true account of what was approved.

“The Office of the Deputy Governor wishes to state in unequivocal terms, for your immediate action and the attention of millions of readers that the report is untrue, mischievous, fake and unfounded.

“We are compelled to write this letter due to the inaccuracies it conveyed; as the story was completely different and not a true reflection of what we have in our records. Also, we would not allow some individual(s) and journalists with mischievous inclination to bring the personality and name of the Deputy Governor, his wife and the office to disrepute,” he said.
