Female police officer sacked for getting pregnant while unmarried

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has sacked a female corporal identified as Olajide Omolola for getting pregnant while being unmarried.

According to a report by The PUNCH, the NPF announced her dismissal in a wireless message that originated from the department of finance and administration in Ado Ekiti.

The document was addressed to the divisional police officer (DPO) at Iye Ekiti where Omolola is based.

In the message, the chief financial officer in Ekiti was asked to relay the information of her dismissal to the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) to ensure that her salary is stopped.

Section 127 of the Police Act and Regulation against women police getting pregnant before marriage W/PC (woman corporal) Olajide Omolola passed out of Police Training School on 24/04/2020 attached to yours contravened above provisions,” the statement read.

“She stands dismissed from the force. Dekit her. Retrieve police documents in her possession with immediate effect. O/C CFO Ekiti only. You are to relay signal to IPPIS Abuja for the stoppage of her salary with immediate effect.

“DECOMPOLS (deputy commissioners of police)/ACPOLS (assistant commissioners of police)/HODs/DPOs Ekiti State only. You are to lecture women police. Treat as very urgent.”

Omolola had completed police training on April 24, 2020, and was attached to Iye Ekiti.

Section 127 of the Police Act states that: “An unmarried woman police officer who becomes pregnant shall be discharged from the Force, and shall not be re-enlisted except with the approval of the Inspector-General.”

In September last year, President Muhammadu Buhari signed into law the Nigeria Police Act, 2020, which repeals the Police Act, 2004, however the young woman was still sacked based on the repealed act.

NASS stops 10bn Covid-19 vaccine spending by Health Ministry

Chairman Senate committee on health, Ibrahim Oloriegbe said that the 10 billion Naira was appropriated for a different purpose insisting that other parties involved are yet to meet their part of the MOU.

The minister of health, Osagie Ohanire, had last week announced at the presidential task force meeting that, 10 billion naira was made available, to support domestic vaccine production to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

The lawmakers, therefore, asked the minister of health, to furnish the committee with the relevant documents and memorandum of understanding, signed between the government and private partners.

Buhari appoints new Service Chiefs

They include Leo Irabor as Chief of Defence Staff; Major-General I. Attahiru as Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral A.Z Gambo as Chief of Naval Staff; and Air-Vice Marshal I.O Alao as Chief of Air Staff.

The President congratulated the new Service Chiefs, and urges them to be loyal and dedicated in the discharge of their responsibilities.

President Buhari in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina thanked the outgoing Service Chiefs for what he calls their “overwhelming achievements in our efforts at bringing enduring peace to our dear country”. He wished them well in their future endeavours.

NECO reschedules dates for 2020 external school certificate examinations

This follows requests by candidates to be given more time to complete their registration process.

In a statement by NECO’s Head, Information and Public Relations Division, Azeez Sani said the examination which was scheduled to hold from Monday, February 1, 2021, to Wednesday, March 3, 2021, will now start on Monday, February 8, 2021, and run till Wednesday, March 10, 2021.

The Council said candidates, who missed some papers during the 2020 SSCE due to the #ENDSARS protests in some states, should also take note of the new dates and report for the examination accordingly at their various examination centers to be designated soon.

Yobe State NUJ chapter suspends journalist for defiling 4 year old girl

At an emergency meeting of the Yobe NUJ chapter in Damaturu, the state capital on Monday, the chairperson of the union, Rajab Mohammed said Uche is suspended from the union until he is cleared by the courts of the allegation.

The chapter chairperson added that the police has arraigned the journalist before a magistrate’s court after five days in police custody.

He said Following the failure of Uche to meet his bail conditions, he was taken to the Potiskum Medium Correctional Facility pending further police investigations.

Mohammed noted that NUJ officials had initially waded into the matter after being informed of Uche’s arrest until the medical report of a hospital which examined the girl confirmed bruises on her genitals.

He said the NUJ as a critical stakeholder in the fight against gender-based violence, rape and other related offences, decided to allow the law to take its course on the matter.

Our reporter gathered that Uche was arrested by the Yobe State Police Command last Friday, after an allegation by his neighbour, a soldier, accusing the journalist of raping his infant daughter.

As at the time of this report, no reaction has been received from the management of Peoples Daily newspapers on the matter.

Medical expert urges researchers to use vaccine fund judiciously

The #10b released by the federal government to support domestic vaccine production for Covid 19 has been described by medical experts and public affairs analyst as a welcome developments if only the funds will be used judiciously.

Our report shows that Nigeria has the capacity to produce the vaccines but urged Nigerians to take the Covid 19 guidelines seriously pending when the vaccine will be out Irene Obuzor, is the Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association, she said since the emergence of Covid 19 early last year, there has been measures internationally to contain the spread of the virus and Nigeria is not an exception.

She urged those saddled with the responsibility of producing a vaccine that will effectively take care of the coronavirus to use the funds for what it was meant for.

Obuzor, advised Nigerians to adhere strictly to the Covid 19 protection guidelines, pending when the vaccines will be produced.

The suspect confessed to the Police that he gets supplies of the ammunition from Niger Republic.

The arrest of the suspect is coming less than a month, after the Katsina State Commissioner of Police, Sanusi Buba, read the riot act to bandits, terrorizing the state and its environs, to either surrender, or face the full wrath of the law.
