JUST IN: Enugu Governor Peter Mbah dumps PDP, joins APC

by Folarin Kehinde October 14, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

After months of speculation, Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has finally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The governor made the announcement on Tuesday at the Government House, Enugu, during a live broadcast attended by top APC leaders, including current and former governors, National Assembly members, and party executives from across the country.

Governor Mbah described the move as a moment of reflection, gratitude, and renewal, saying leadership sometimes demands difficult decisions in pursuit of greater goals.

The governor explained that the defection was a collective decision involving National Assembly members, State Assembly lawmakers, members of the State Executive Council, councillors, and over 80 per cent of the former PDP structure in Enugu.

He said the decision followed years of reflection and a desire to align the state with what he called a platform that respects our regional voice and supports our vision for development.

He assured the people of Enugu State that his defection would not disrupt the state’s development agenda but instead amplify the state’s voice at the national level.

The governor formally completed his APC membership registration and received his party card, marking what he called a new beginning of development and growth for Enugu State.

COP30: Africa Must Lead on Fair Transition Mineral Governance – NRGI

by Folarin Kehinde October 13, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Africa Deputy Director at the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI), Ibrahima Aidara has called on African nations to seize the opportunity presented by the global demand for transition minerals.

Aidara emphasized a shift from mere extraction to value addition, local job creation, and sustainable economic diversification.

Speaking at a press briefing ahead of COP30, Aidara stressed Africa’s critical role in shaping a more equitable global mineral supply chain.

“Africa’s role in the global supply chain for transition minerals has largely been confined to raw material extraction, with limited value addition or local job creation,” he stated. “But for African producing countries, the rising demand for these minerals could help diversify economies and meet urgent energy needs.”

Aidara urged the Africa Group of Negotiators, under Tanzania’s leadership, to take decisive action.

“We see everything in place for the Africa Group to adopt specific proposals strengthening the global governance of transition minerals ahead of COP30.

They should table these proposals, starting today at the Pre-COP in Brasilia, and reach out to other Party groupings,” he said. “We need leadership, the stakes are high.”

Anabella Rosemberg of the Climate Action Network on her part emphasized the need to shift from rhetoric to implementation on just transition, while Angela Asuncion of the Resource Justice Network highlighted the risks faced by communities and defenders in mineral-rich regions like the Philippines.

Angela Asuncion, Asia Pacific Coordinator for the Transition Mineral Accountability Working Group at RJN, warned of the mounting risks faced by communities in mineral-rich but vulnerable regions such as the Philippines.

“Transition mineral-rich nations such as the Philippines remain among the world’s most climate-vulnerable and deadliest places for land defenders and activists,” she said. “The insatiable demand for mining under the guise of the energy transition only heightens the risk of violence for those courageously protecting their livelihoods and our future.”

Asuncion called on COP30 negotiators to confront the material dimensions of the Paris Agreement, ensuring that human rights, environmental safeguards, and equity are prioritized throughout the entire mineral supply chain.

Seyi tinubu distributes one million Bibles to celebrate 40 years birthday

by Folarin Kehinde October 13, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

One million copies of the Holy Bible are set to be distributed across Nigeria in honour of Barrister Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The initiative was announced during a thanksgiving service held on Sunday at the National Christian Centre, Abuja. The event was organised by friends of Seyi Tinubu and coordinated by Hon. Belusochukwu Enwere, National Chairman of the Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN).

Organisers said the Bibles would be shared through churches and community groups nationwide to promote moral renewal, ethical leadership, and civic responsibility among young Nigerians.

Hon. Enwere explained that the initiative was conceived to inspire moral transformation rather than to mark a personal celebration.

“The one million Bible project is a gift to the body of Christ and a seed for moral transformation. Through this effort, we hope to restore integrity, compassion, and love for humanity among young Nigerians,” he said.

“The one million Bible project is a gift to the body of Christ and a seed for moral transformation. Through this effort, we hope to restore integrity, compassion, and love for humanity among young Nigerians,” he said.

In a message read on his behalf, Seyi Tinubu expressed appreciation to the organisers, noting that faith and moral education remain essential for responsible citizenship and national development.

The first set of Bibles, which will be distributed to churches, schools, and youth ministries nationwide in the coming weeks, were presented during the service.

Finance minister not affected by stroke, as presidency speaks on replacement

by Folarin Kehinde October 13, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Presidency has dismissed claims that plans are underway to replace the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Presidency explained that Edun is currently recuperating at his Abuja residence after falling ill, debunking rumours that he suffered a stroke or was flown abroad for treatment.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that the minister is receiving medical care in Nigeria.

“Yes, he’s indisposed. Wale Edun is about 69 years old. He suddenly fell ill. As we speak, he’s in Nigeria, recuperating,” Onanuga said.

The clarification followed reports suggesting that President Tinubu was considering replacing the minister amid concerns about his health.

Earlier, the Presidency had announced that Edun would not attend this year’s World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C., with the Central Bank Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, leading Nigeria’s delegation instead.

The meetings, which bring together global finance ministers, central bankers, and economic experts, are scheduled to begin on Monday, October 14.

Appointed on August 28, 2023, Edun has been a key figure in President Tinubu’s economic reform agenda, driving efforts to stabilise the naira, curb inflation, and attract foreign investment.

‘You lied, 139 million Nigerians not living in poverty, FG tells World Bank

by Folarin Kehinde October 9, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Presidency has faulted the World Bank’s latest economic report, which estimated that about 139 million Nigerians are living in poverty, describing the figure as exaggerated and disconnected from the country’s prevailing realities.

LEADING REPORTERS gathered that the new figure by the organisation represents an increase from 129 million in April 2025.

President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, in a statement posted on his official X handle on Wednesday, said the World Bank’s poverty estimate must be “properly contextualised” within the framework of global poverty measurement models.

“While Nigeria values its partnership with the World Bank and appreciates its contributions to policy analysis, the figure quoted must be properly contextualised. It is unrealistic,” Dare said.

According to the Presidency, the global lender’s estimate was based on the $2.15 per person per day international poverty line, set in 2017 using Purchasing Power Parity (PPP). It said the figure should not be mistaken for an actual headcount of poor Nigerians.

The statement explained that, when converted to nominal terms, the $2.15 benchmark equals about N100,000 per month at the current exchange rate, which is significantly higher than Nigeria’s new minimum wage of N70,000.

It added that the PPP methodology relies on historical consumption data—Nigeria’s last major household survey was conducted in 2018/2019—and often fails to account for the large informal and subsistence sectors that sustain millions of Nigerian families.

“There must be caution against interpreting the World Bank’s numbers as a literal, real-time headcount,” the Presidency said. “The figure is an analytical construct, not a direct reflection of local income realities.”

The Presidency, therefore, described the World Bank’s estimate as a modelled global projection rather than an empirical reflection of living conditions in 2025.

Dare stressed that the administration’s focus was on changing the trajectory, not debating static figures, adding that Nigeria’s economy was now on a recovery and reform path aimed at achieving inclusive growth and social protection.

He noted that the administration has expanded a number of social welfare and economic initiatives under the Renewed Hope Agenda to cushion the impact of recent reforms while laying the foundation for long-term prosperity.

These, he said, include the Conditional Cash Transfer programme, which now covers 15 million households nationwide with digital verification through the National Social Register; the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme targeting all 8,809 electoral wards with micro-infrastructure and social projects; and the strengthening of National Social Investment Programmes such as N-Power, GEEP micro-loans, and school feeding schemes to support jobs, businesses, and education.

He further cited food security initiatives involving the distribution of subsidised grains and fertilisers, mechanisation partnerships, and the revival of strategic food reserves to stabilise staple prices.

The Renewed Hope Infrastructure Fund, he said, is financing key road, housing, and power projects to lower living costs and create jobs, while the National Credit Guarantee Company is expanding affordable credit access for small businesses, women, and youth entrepreneurs through risk-sharing arrangements with commercial banks.

The Presidency maintained that the Tinubu administration was tackling Nigeria’s poverty challenge by addressing the structural distortions that have constrained productivity and inclusive growth for decades.

It explained that ongoing reforms such as the removal of fuel subsidy, exchange rate unification, and fiscal reallocation of funds toward productive sectors were “painful but necessary choices” aimed at fixing the root causes of poverty rather than its symptoms.

It noted that even the World Bank had acknowledged that these reforms are already restoring macroeconomic stability and growth momentum.

The government emphasised that economic recovery alone is not enough unless it translates into real welfare gains for ordinary Nigerians. According to the statement, the administration’s medium-term priority is to ensure that macroeconomic stability leads to affordable food, quality jobs, and reliable infrastructure.

It added that major investments were underway in agriculture, manufacturing, and power, including new gas-to-power projects and skill development hubs expected to boost job creation and reduce living costs. “Nigerians should begin to feel visible improvements in food prices, income, and purchasing power as these programmes mature,” the statement said.

The Presidency also revealed that efforts were ongoing to consolidate the nation’s social protection architecture under a unified, data-driven framework to enhance transparency and ensure that no vulnerable community is left behind. It said the administration was expanding the National Social Register and scaling up existing social investment schemes to provide targeted support to poor households.

The Presidency reaffirmed President Tinubu’s commitment to building a resilient and inclusive economy that directly improves living standards. “Nigeria rejects exaggerated statistical interpretations detached from local realities. The government remains focused on empowering households, expanding opportunity, and laying the foundation for a fairer, more prosperous nation,” the statement said.

Uzodimma’s Imo Miracle: How Do We Ensure That the Momentum Is Not Lost?

by Folarin Kehinde October 8, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

By Oruruo Samuel Okechukwu

Imo State’s transformation under Governor Hope Uzodimma has been nothing short of remarkable. From a state weighed down by insecurity and fiscal distress, it has become a story of renewal and direction.

The recent working visit of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu further affirmed this progress and drew national attention to Imo’s new standing.

Concerns still exist about inclusiveness and whether all communities feel the impact of growth. These concerns, though sometimes overstated, are healthy reminders that development must be sustained, trusted, and evenly distributed.

Under Uzodimma, fiscal stability has taken root. State records show that public debt dropped from ₦259 billion to ₦99 billion, while internally generated revenue rose from about ₦400 million to nearly ₦4 billion.

This fiscal discipline has powered a wave of infrastructure renewal across the state. More than twenty major road projects now link Owerri, Orlu, Okigwe, and the coastal communities. The governor’s “Shared Prosperity” agenda has redefined Imo’s potential. His recognition as both Digital Governor of the Year and Infrastructure Governor of the Year by The Whistler Newspaper in 2025 was no surprise to those following the state’s trajectory.

President Tinubu’s visit to Imo gave these achievements further validation. He commissioned the Assumpta Twin Flyover, the Owerri – Mbaise – Umuahia Federal Road, and the Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu International Conference Centre.

He commended Uzodimma’s commitment to governance and urged Imolites to remain hopeful, stating that their sacrifices were beginning to produce results.

The visit symbolised continuity between state and federal efforts. It also reminded Imolites that progress must be consolidated through capable succession. As Uzodimma’s administration advances, the question grows louder: who can sustain the momentum?

That answer may well lie in Dr Ikedi Ohakim. A former governor with proven experience and a reformist mindset, Ohakim embodies continuity built on institutional memory and tested vision.

The parallels between both men are significant. Uzodimma established the Imo Roads and Bridges Agency, while Ohakim had earlier created the Imo Road Maintenance Agency (IROMA), which generated more than 30,000 jobs and transformed local road maintenance.

Whereas Uzodimma opened the state to investors, Ohakim had set up the Imo State Investment Promotion Agency to lay the groundwork for sustained private sector participation. Their efforts, though years apart, share the same philosophy of structured development.

Ohakim’s financial innovation remains a major reference point. In July 2009, Vanguard Newspaper reported that his administration launched a ₦40 billion infrastructural bond programme, with ₦18.5 billion successfully accessed in the first phase.

The bond funded key projects including the Oguta Wonder Lake Resort, rural water schemes, and road rehabilitation across the state. It was one of Nigeria’s earliest state-level development bonds and reflected financial foresight that remains relevant today.

Job creation was another hallmark. Beyond IROMA’s employment of thousands, Ohakim introduced the 10,000 Graduate Employment Initiative in 2008. Vanguard reported in November 2010 that 10,000 graduates were recruited into the state’s teaching and civil services, while a June 2011 follow-up article detailed how the scheme aimed to absorb young professionals into public service and education.

It was a structured, merit-based intervention that addressed unemployment more systematically than the ad hoc models common at the time.

Environmental renewal became his signature achievement. The Clean and Green Initiative, launched in August 2007 and reported by ModernGhana in May 2009, was implemented through the Environmental Transformation Committee (ENTRACO). It introduced modern waste management systems, tree planting, public sanitation drives, and beautification across Owerri.

By 2010, The Nation and Daily Independent reported that Owerri had been named Nigeria’s cleanest state capital for three consecutive years. The initiative restored civic pride and transformed the state’s image at home and abroad.

Ohakim also invested in long-term human capital projects. The Greater Okigwe Water Scheme, inaugurated by President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua in 2009, solved a long-standing regional challenge.

His establishment of the College of Education at Ihitte/Uboma and the expansion of the Imo State Polytechnic, now part of Imo State University, created pathways for teacher training and technical education.

These legacies continue to serve the state today.

Critics often point to shortcomings in communication during his first tenure, but what distinguishes Ohakim is his response after leaving office. Rather than retreat, he pursued further studies both at home and abroad to refine his understanding of governance.

That humility and commitment to self-improvement shaped a more grounded leader. Few Nigerian politicians have shown a similar readiness to evolve.

Political balance also weighs heavily in Imo’s calculations.

Uzodimma hails from Orlu Zone, which has produced most of the state’s governors since 1999 and has enjoyed more than twenty years in power. Okigwe Zone, from which Ohakim comes, has only completed a single four-year term instead of the eight years typically expected of each zone before power rotates.

This historical imbalance remains a key concern in the quest for justice and equity within the state’s political structure.

The Charter of Equity now points naturally toward Owerri Zone for the next cycle, but Ohakim’s re-emergence offers a unique bridge, a chance to complete Okigwe’s remaining four years while preparing a smooth and fair transition to Owerri thereafter. His inclusive leadership style, often praised by Ohanaeze Ndigbo, embodies the bridge-building spirit and sense of fairness that have long defined effective governance in Imo State.

The business community recognises his continuing relevance. His private sector experience and record in attracting investment align with current opportunities such as the Free Trade Zone, Oguta Lake dredging, and new power generation projects.

These initiatives need continuity, not disruption. Youth employment remains a national issue, and Imo is no exception. Ohakim’s 10,000 Youth Employment Initiative remains a model for structured job creation, contrasting sharply with random empowerment programmes. Its blend of public service absorption and skill development fits neatly with the new digital economy that Imo is building.

Continuity also matters in healthcare, infrastructure, and environmental management. Uzodimma’s health insurance scheme and ongoing security improvements require consolidation, not interruption. Projects like Oguta Lake and digital governance platforms demand experienced leadership with both technical understanding and historical context.

In all these, Ohakim’s blend of innovation and maturity offers the right balance.Transitions in democracy often determine whether progress endures or unravels. Imo now faces such a turning point. Uzodimma’s achievements have changed the state’s image, but their sustainability depends on who takes the baton. Ohakim represents continuity with correction, experience with humility, and vision with discipline.

This is not a contest of personalities but of purpose. The question before Imo’s people is how to protect and deepen the progress of recent years. Ohakim’s leadership style, grounded in inclusiveness and reform, provides that steady path forward.

Feedback from recent community reports shows that Imolites value stability, employment, and practical governance over political adventure.

The conversation has moved from partisanship to stewardship: who will secure Imo’s gains and widen their reach? Uzodimma’s legacy has reset Imo’s direction, though debates on inclusiveness and governance style continue. What Imo needs now is not disruption but stability. With renewed perspective, experience, and a record of reform, Ikedi Ohakim stands ready to lead that next phase.

Continuity with correction, experience with humility, and progress with prudence. That is the balance Imo State needs to ensure that the miracle of today becomes the foundation of tomorrow.

BREAKING: Tinubu’s minister resigns after certificate forgery allegation

by Folarin Kehinde October 7, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Geoffrey Uche Nnaji, has resigned from office following allegations of certificate forgery leveled against him.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the minister’s resignation, according to a statement released on Tuesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Onanuga said, “President Tinubu accepted the resignation of Geoffrey Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, following some allegations against him.”

He explained that Nnaji, who was appointed in August 2023, tendered his resignation in a letter to the President, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve the country.

The former minister reportedly attributed his decision to sustained political attacks and blackmail by his opponents.

“President Tinubu thanked him for his service and wished him success in his future endeavours,” Onanuga added.
