Russia to support Iran nuclear programme – Kremlin

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 18, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Russia has declared its willingness to support Iran in addressing issues related to its nuclear programme.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made this known in an interview with the Iranian news agency IRNA on Tuesday.

Peskov emphasized that Moscow values its strong ties with Tehran and is committed to enhancing cooperation across various sectors.

“Iran support includes providing assistance in dealing with important matters like the nuclear programme,” he stated.

He further stressed that diplomatic efforts remain the preferred approach to resolving international concerns over Iran’s nuclear activities, provided all parties demonstrate the necessary political will.

In 2015, Iran reached a nuclear agreement with the United Kingdom, Germany, China, Russia, the United States, and France. The deal granted Tehran sanctions relief in exchange for restrictions on its nuclear programme.

However, in 2018, then-U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew from the agreement and reinstated sanctions on Iran. In response, Tehran gradually scaled back its nuclear commitments, including increased uranium enrichment.

Trump: US government to deport 201 Nigerians

by Folarin Kehinde February 17, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The United States government has announced plans to deport at least 201 Nigerian nationals.

According to U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria Richard Mills Jr., 85 of these individuals have already been cleared for immediate deportation.

The deportees, who will be taken to Lagos, include those serving jail terms in U.S. prisons for various crimes.

The development follows the enforcement of President Donald Trump’s immigration policy by the US government.

The government has carried out deportation of citizens of countries such as Colombia, Mexico and India, among others.

The envoy said: “Those to be repatriated would be dropped in Lagos.

“There wouldn’t be room for whether it should be in Port Harcourt or Abuja.

“The first group will be convicted prisoners – those who committed crimes and are in U.S. prisons.

“Some of them are those who have clearly violated U.S. immigration laws.

“They appealed but were denied yet they are still in the U.S. They have committed immigration crime.”

Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has appealed to the U.S. government to treat the deportees with dignity. She expressed concern over the use of handcuffs and leg irons on some of the deportees, many of whom are not violent offenders.

Mrs. Odumegwu-Ojukwu also urged the U.S. government to allow the deportees sufficient time to retrieve their assets and settle their affairs in the United States.

The minister expressed concern over the future of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The minister expressed concern over the future of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

She said: “We can’t say whether it’s outright suspension. A lot of NGOs are worried and waiting for clarification.

“We will just make that appeal on behalf of the NGOs in Nigeria.

“Even less than a month into the 90-day review, there have been concerns.

“I know before the completion of the review, there’s already humanitarian issues in Nigeria and Africa.

“We will appeal that this initiative be preserved.

“Even if it’s abrogated as an agency, there must be a way of keeping the ideals to ensure that the poor beneficiaries in the communities, not just in Nigeria but Africa, are not abandoned.”

92-year-old Cameroon’s Biya seek re-election after 40 years as President

by Folarin Kehinde February 12, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Cameroon President Paul Biya, the world’s oldest head of state, turns 92 years old on Thursday after more than four decades in power but remains tight-lipped on whether he will run for another term in elections this year.

Many people including the deeply divided opposition are in little doubt that the leader, who first won election in 1982, will stand for an eighth term in the October vote.

After highly contested elections in 2018, Biya further toughened his autocratic grip on power, with dissenting opinions firmly met with repression, arrests and prison terms, human rights activists say.

“The president has already said that he will make known whether or not he is a candidate in this election at the appropriate time,” government spokesman and Communication Minister Rene Emmanuel Sadi said last month.

Biya has refrained from picking a successor and the subject of who would replace him remains taboo.

“In the current context, even if he were lying on a stretcher, candidate Biya will be re-elected,” said former minister Garga Haman Adji in an interview with the daily Mutations in July.

Concerns about Biya’s health grew last year when he disappeared from public view for several weeks.

Persistent rumours prompted authorities to release a statement saying Biya was in Switzerland, where the leader has regularly spent long periods staying at luxury holiday resorts.

The government then formally banned local media from discussing the state of his health.

Since his return to the country on October 21, Biya’s public appearances have been limited — a few official photos at the presidential palace, a regional summit in the capital Yaounde and a handful of speeches broadcast on television.

As in previous election years, voices from across society are calling on him to again stand for office.

“My determination to serve you remains intact and is strengthened on a daily basis, given the scale of the challenges we face,” Biya said in his end-of-year address, welcoming a “massive support”.

In January, traditional leaders expressed their “total and unwavering” support. On Facebook, some supporters said Biya was “still strong” and can withstand two more terms.

Europe Trails China, U.S. in AI Innovation – Macron

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 10, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

French President Emmanuel Macron has warned that Europe is falling behind in artificial intelligence (AI) development and must take urgent steps to compete with the United States and China.

In an interview with CNN, Macron acknowledged that Europe is “not in the race today” and stressed the need for a clear AI agenda to bridge the gap.

“We are not in the race today, we are lagging behind,” he said. “We need an AI agenda because we have to bridge the gap with the United States and China on AI.”

He highlighted funding and computing power as major challenges, noting that Europe controls only three to five percent of global computing capacity. Macron emphasized the need to increase this share to at least 20 percent.

His remarks come ahead of the Paris AI Summit, which begins on Monday and will bring together global tech leaders to discuss AI innovation, investment, and regulation.

According to French publication TF1, France is set to announce €109 billion in AI investments at the summit’s opening session. This includes €20 billion from Canadian investment firm Brookfield for AI projects in France, with an additional €50 billion expected from the UAE in the coming years.

Macron’s call for AI advancement follows major developments in the sector, including China’s DeepSeek making significant breakthroughs and the United States launching its $500 billion Stargate project to expand data centers and strengthen AI dominance.

France is also making strides in AI through Mistral AI, a Paris-based startup specializing in open-weight large language models (LLMs), which officially launched on February 6, 2025.

U.S. Slaps Sanctions on ICC Under Donald Trump’s Order

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 7, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

U.S. President Donald Trump has authorized economic and travel sanctions against individuals involved in International Criminal Court (ICC) investigations targeting U.S. citizens and allies, including Israel.

The move, announced Thursday, comes amid Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington. Netanyahu, along with Israel’s former defense minister and a Hamas leader, is facing ICC warrants over the ongoing war in Gaza.

It remains unclear when the U.S. will release the names of sanctioned individuals. This action mirrors measures taken by the Trump administration in 2020 when Washington imposed sanctions on then-ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda and a senior aide over the court’s probe into alleged war crimes by U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

The ICC has yet to respond to the latest sanctions, which include freezing U.S.-based assets of targeted individuals and barring them and their families from entering the country.

The 125-member ICC prosecutes individuals for war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and aggression within its jurisdiction. However, the United States, China, Russia, and Israel are not members.

Trump’s executive order follows last week’s failed attempt by U.S. Senate Republicans to pass legislation imposing similar sanctions on the ICC.

Anticipating financial restrictions, the ICC has taken precautionary measures, including paying staff salaries three months in advance, sources told Reuters. In December, ICC President Judge Tomoko Akane warned that such sanctions could severely disrupt the court’s operations and threaten its existence.

Russia has also taken action against the ICC. In 2023, the court issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin over the alleged illegal deportation of Ukrainian children. Moscow retaliated by banning ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan and placing him and two ICC judges on its wanted list.

Trump Signs Executive Order Banning Men From Competing in Women’s Sports

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 6, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order barring transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports, marking his latest policy move on transgender issues since returning to office.

“From now on, women’s sports will be only for women,” Trump declared at a White House signing ceremony attended by children and female athletes. “With this executive order, the war on women’s sports is over.”

The order empowers federal agencies to withhold funding from schools that allow transgender athletes to compete on women’s teams. “If you let men take over women’s sports teams or invade your locker rooms, you will be investigated… and risk your federal funding,” Trump warned.

Among those present at the event were top Republican figures, including House Speaker Mike Johnson and Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Trump also announced plans to pressure the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to revise its policies on transgender athletes ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. He directed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to convey the U.S. position to the IOC, stating, “We want them to change everything having to do with the Olympics and this absolutely ridiculous subject.”

Additionally, Trump tasked Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem with blocking visa applications from individuals “attempting to fraudulently enter the United States while identifying themselves as women athletes to try and get into the Games.”

The executive order follows a series of actions targeting transgender rights since Trump’s second-term inauguration. He previously declared that U.S. government policy would recognize only two genders, banned transgender individuals from military service, and restricted gender transition procedures for minors.

Trump has consistently made transgender issues a focal point of his political messaging, using the topic as a key attack against his 2024 election opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris. One of his prominent campaign slogans, “Kamala Harris is for they/them. President Trump is for you,” underscored his opposition to her stance on gender identity policies.

His latest order aligns with recent Republican-led legislative efforts, including a House bill passed in January imposing restrictions on transgender participation in girls’ and women’s sports.

6,000 deported in first two weeks of Trump’s illegal immigration crackdown

by Folarin Kehinde February 5, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

In response to illegal immigration, the Trump administration has deported no fewer than 6,000 migrants within the first two weeks of Donald Trump’s second term, Daily Mail reports Wednesday.

The report disclosed that in the 15 days since Trump has been in office, deportation rate averaged 370 – 400 per day.

According to Federal Data shared with Daily Mail, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement deported 512 illegal immigrants on Monday alone and arrested 715 individuals with outstanding immigration violations, 73 per cent of whom have known criminal convictions or pending charges, including homicide, sexual crimes against minors and drug trafficking.

In addition to the arrests, the agency’s crackdown targeted gang members, including six affiliates of the Tren de Aragua cartel and nine other migrant gang members.

The first flights of migrants to Guantanamo Bay in Cuba that started on Tuesday reportedly included members of the gang and other ‘high-threat’ aliens tied to the cartel.

“Guantanamo Bay will hold the worst of the worst. That starts today,” Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem wrote on X on Tuesday alongside images of migrants getting deported.

The base has reportedly been ramping up operations to turn the military installation into a holding facility for deported illegal aliens as the last time the base was used for migrant operations was in 1994.

The report added that an official disclosed that since Trump’s swearing-in in January, nearly 9,000 immigration violators have been arrested, many of whom have multiple convictions or charges.

“President Trump’s administration is carrying out his promise to arrest and deport criminal illegal immigrants. There’s more to come. This is just the beginning,” the senior White House official was quoted in a text to DailyMail.com.

He was quoted as saying, “The volume of crime that they have and the viciousness of the crimes, these people are horrible people, and if somebody thinks they’re going to be wonderful citizens someday, they’re wrong. It’s not going to happen.

“If I can get them out of the country and be in some other country where they’re glad to have them because they make a small fee compared to what we’ve paid to a private prison, or to put them in one of our prisons and cost even more money, I think it would be great.

“I’d love to get them the hell out of our country.”

Trump’s Gaza Takeover Proposal Condemned as ‘Ethnic Cleansing’

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 5, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

US President Donald Trump’s proposal to take over the Gaza Strip and redevelop it has drawn sharp criticism, with rights groups and analysts condemning it as a call for ethnic cleansing.

Trump, speaking alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Tuesday, said, “The US will take over the Gaza Strip and we will do a job with it too.” He added that the US envisions “a long-term ownership position” and would create “unlimited numbers of jobs and housing” in the area.

The remarks have sparked backlash, with critics warning that such a move would forcibly displace Palestinians and violate international law. Steve Cutts, interim CEO of Medical Aid for Palestinians, called the proposal “tantamount to ethnic cleansing and a war crime.”

“Gaza belongs to the Palestinian people, not the United States or Israel,” Cutts said in a statement, warning that the fate of two million Palestinians “hangs in the balance.”

Investigative journalist Antony Loewenstein also condemned the remarks, saying they reflect longstanding Israeli far-right policies. Speaking on CNN, Loewenstein described Trump’s comments as “a wish for ethnic cleansing,” linking them to historical efforts to remove Palestinians from their land.

Saudi Arabia reiterated its stance on Palestinian sovereignty, stating its commitment to an independent Palestinian state remains “firm and unshakable.”

Meanwhile, Netanyahu appeared open to Trump’s proposal, saying the idea could “change history” and that Israel’s priority remains ensuring Gaza is no longer a security threat.

Trade War: China Hits US Energy and Auto Industries with Fresh Tariffs

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 4, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

China announced on Tuesday that it will impose a 15% tariff on imports of coal and liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States, responding to Washington’s recent decision to levy a 10% tariff on Chinese goods.

In a statement, China’s Ministry of Finance also revealed plans to introduce a 10% tariff on US crude oil, agricultural machinery, pickup trucks, and vehicles with large-displacement engines, such as sports cars.

Beijing described the move as a direct response to the “unilateral tariff hike” imposed by the United States over the weekend, accusing Washington of violating World Trade Organization (WTO) rules.

“The US tariff increase seriously violates WTO regulations, fails to address its own economic challenges, and disrupts normal trade cooperation between China and the United States,” the ministry stated.

The new Chinese tariffs are set to take effect next Monday.

The US had earlier announced sweeping tariff measures against major trade partners, including China, with an additional 10% duty imposed on Chinese imports on top of existing levies.

US President Donald Trump justified the tariffs as a measure to penalize countries that, he claimed, had failed to curb illegal migration and drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl, into the United States.

Americans Panic As Chinese Firm Launch Cheap AI Model “DeepSeek”

by Nelson Ugwuagbo January 27, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The release of DeepSeek R1, an open-source artificial intelligence large-language model developed in China, has unsettled the U.S. tech sector, raising concerns over the nation’s AI dominance.

Trained on a budget of just $6 million, DeepSeek performs on par with leading AI models, challenging assumptions about the high costs and scaling requirements of advanced AI development.

Venture capitalist Nic Carter described the launch as evidence that OpenAI does not have an unbeatable advantage. He noted that the release dispelled long-held beliefs about the scalability, value accrual, and cost barriers in AI model development.

The launch has also undermined perceptions that China was trailing the U.S. in AI innovation. Previous reports had suggested the country was six months behind the United States, but DeepSeek’s release and performance suggest otherwise.

China’s progress comes despite an AI chip embargo imposed by the United States in October 2022. The restrictions, aimed at blocking the export of high-performance computing chips from companies like Nvidia and AMD, did little to hinder China’s efforts. Chinese firms turned to domestic manufacturing and cloud-computing platforms, such as Amazon Cloud Services, to access the required hardware.

In August 2023, China further accelerated its AI innovation by relaxing regulations. The move included scrapping financial penalties for AI firms that deviated from industry regulations, fostering a more flexible development environment.

DeepSeek’s release not only intensifies the global AI competition but also casts doubt on Silicon Valley’s ability to maintain its lead, fueling unease in the ongoing technological rivalry between the U.S. and China.
