Trump begins deportation, orders raids on churches, schools, hospitals

by Folarin Kehinde January 22, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Donald Trump has ordered raids on schools, churches and hospitals to enforce arrest of illegal immigrants in the United States.

The onslaught which is coming in the wake of close to 100 presidential orders has raised concerns in Nigeria and other countries.

The policy change ends more than a decade of restrictions that protected these “sensitive areas.”

The change was announced in a statement by the Department of Homeland Security which oversees Immigration, Customs Enforcement and Border Protection on Tuesday.

It emphasized the importance of eliminating spaces where individuals could evade arrest.

“Criminals will no longer be able to hide in America’s schools and churches to avoid arrest.

“The Trump Administration will not tie the hands of our brave law enforcement, and instead trusts them to use common sense”, according to the Guardian.

The new directive, issued by Acting DHS Secretary Benjamine Huffman, also reinstates the use of expedited removal nationwide.

Under the policy, ICE is empowered to quickly deport undocumented individuals who cannot prove they have resided in the United States continuously for more than two years.

The changes align with a broader immigration crackdown by the Trump administration.

This week, the president signed several executive actions, including measures to suspend the refugee system, block access to an app used for facilitating entry into the US, and strengthen cooperation between ICE and local governments.

As part of this initiative, ICE agents are set to conduct nationwide operations to arrest and deport undocumented individuals.

Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, confirmed in an interview that these efforts would begin immediately, stating that ICE officers across the country would be actively enforcing immigration laws.

“We Don’t Want To Be Americans” – Greenland PM Tells Trump

by Nelson Ugwuagbo January 21, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede declared Tuesday that the Arctic island would determine its own future, rejecting U.S. President Donald Trump’s renewed comments about taking control of the Danish autonomous territory.

Speaking at a press conference, Egede said, “We are Greenlanders. We don’t want to be Americans. We don’t want to be Danish either. Greenland’s future will be decided by Greenland.” He emphasized that Greenland’s people and government would determine the island’s destiny.

Trump, who took office on Monday, caused concern in early January by refusing to rule out military intervention to bring Greenland and the Panama Canal under U.S. control. On Monday, while he did not mention Greenland during his inauguration speech, Trump addressed the matter when questioned by reporters in the Oval Office.

“Greenland is a wonderful place, we need it for international security,” Trump said. “I’m sure that Denmark will come along — it’s costing them a lot of money to maintain it, to keep it.”

Greenlandic and Danish officials strongly defended the island’s right to self-determination in response.

Egede noted the country’s openness to dialogue with the U.S. to address security interests in the Arctic, particularly amid rising tensions with China and Russia. However, he described Trump’s recent remarks as “worrying” but urged calm.

Greenland, the world’s largest island, is home to a U.S. military base in the northwest and occupies a strategic position in the Arctic, where melting ice is opening new shipping lanes. It also holds significant untapped mineral and oil reserves, though oil and uranium exploration are prohibited.

“We have cooperated with the U.S. on security issues for more than 80 years,” Egede said, adding that efforts were underway to arrange a meeting with U.S. officials to clarify Greenland’s stance.

Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen condemned any attempts by nations to seize another country. “Of course, we can’t have a world order where countries, if they’re big enough, can just help themselves to what they want,” he said.

Greenland is set to hold elections before April 6, with independence expected to dominate the agenda. Currently, the territory relies on subsidies from Copenhagen, which account for a fifth of its GDP, alongside its fishing industry.

Although Greenland enjoys autonomy, Denmark retains control over judicial affairs, monetary policy, foreign affairs, defense, and security.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reaffirmed the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination but highlighted the importance of Denmark’s alliance with the U.S., describing it as Denmark’s most critical partnership since World War II.

Frederiksen also acknowledged the challenges posed by Trump’s presidency, writing on Instagram that Europe would need to “navigate a new reality.”

Key Danish party leaders were briefed on the situation Tuesday, with Green Left leader Pia Olsen Dyhr describing the upcoming years as “difficult.”

Trump Sacks First Woman To Head A US Military Service

by Folarin Kehinde January 21, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Donald Trump’s administration has removed Admiral Linda Fagan — the first woman to lead a US military service — as the head of the Coast Guard.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees the Coast Guard, did not immediately respond to a request on Tuesday for comment on Fagan’s dismissal.

Fox News cited a senior official saying reasons included her failure to address border security threats, excessive focus on diversity, equity and inclusion, and an “erosion of trust” over the Coast Guard’s investigation into sexual assault cases.

Trump and other Republicans have long railed against government programs aimed at fostering diversity, and border security is a key priority for the president, who declared a national emergency at the US frontier with Mexico on Monday, the first day of his new term.

“She served a long and illustrious career, and I thank her for her service to our nation,” acting DHS secretary Benjamine Huffman said in a message to the Coast Guard, which is one of the five US military branches.

Fagan had led the Coast Guard since 2022, and previously held posts including vice commandant of the service.

She “served on all seven continents, from the snows of Ross Island, Antarctica to the heart of Africa, from Tokyo to Geneva, and in many ports along the way,” according to an archived version of her biography, which is no longer available on the Coast Guard website.

JUST IN: President Trump officially withdraws United States from the World Health Organization

by Folarin Kehinde January 21, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Donald Trump is pulling the U.S. out of the World Health Organization for a second time, the White House announced late Monday.

The day-one executive order fulfills Trump’s campaign promise to reject global institutions. Health experts worry it isolates the U.S. with consequences for pandemic and disease response and diplomatic relations worldwide.

The U.S. is and has historically been the largest funder of the global health agency headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. WHO, part of the United Nations, is tasked with preparing for and fighting health emergencies. The U.S. has strongly influenced the agency since its founding after World War II.

Trump criticized WHO for its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, even as his administration faced scrutiny for being slow to respond to the crisis. In 2020, at the height of the pandemic, he began the process of pulling out from WHO.

In sweeping orders, Trump aims to remake federal policy on border, gender, climate change

Despite his promise, he failed to do so under U.S. law governing the timeline for withdrawal and funding obligations to the agency. Former President Joe Biden reversed Trump’s decision after taking office and restored funding to WHO.

Trump threatens mass deportation of all illegal migrants into US

by Folarin Kehinde January 20, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

US President Donald Trump has promised to deport millions of “criminal aliens” who illegally gain entry into America.

The 47th United States leader made this known in his inaugural speech on Monday after he was sworn in to succeed Joe Biden.

“All illegal entries will immediately be halted and we will begin the process of returning millions of millions of criminal aliens back to the places from which they came,” Trump declared before four past presidents including Biden.

“We will reinstate my ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy,” he said, vowing to “rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America”.

Trump, who was sworn in alongside his deputy, 40-year-old JD Vance, promised that America “will not forget our God” during his administration. He promised to “bring free speech back to America”.

Trump, 78, was a political outsider at his first inauguration in 2017 as the 45th president, but this time around he is surrounded by America’s wealthy and powerful.

The world’s richest man, Elon Musk, Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg, Amazon chief Jeff Bezos and Google CEO Sundar Pichai all had prime seats in the Capitol alongside Trump’s family and cabinet members.

While Trump refused to attend Biden’s 2021 inauguration after falsely claiming electoral fraud by the Democrat, this time Biden has been keen to restore the sense of tradition.

Biden joined former presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton at the Capitol. Former first ladies Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush were there but ex-first lady Michelle Obama pointedly stayed away.

Donald Trump Sworn In As 47th US President

by Folarin Kehinde January 20, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Donald Trump was sworn in for a historic second term as president on Monday, pledging a blitz of immediate orders on immigration and the US culture wars as he caps his extraordinary comeback.

With one hand raised in the air and the other on a Bible given to him by his mother, the 47th US president solemnly took the oath of office beneath the huge Rotunda of the US Capitol.

Republican Trump and outgoing Democratic President Joe Biden had earlier traveled by motorcade together to the Capitol, where the ceremony was being held indoors — and with a much smaller crowd — for the first time in decades due to frigid weather.

Earlier, they and their spouses met for a traditional tea at the White House.

“Welcome home,” Biden said to Trump as he and First Lady Jill Biden greeted their successors at the front door to the presidential residence.

Musk, who bankrolled Trump’s election campaign to the tune of a quarter of a billion dollars and promotes far-right policies on the X social network, will lead a cost-cutting drive in the new administration.

JUST IN: TikTok to be banned in the US from Sunday

by Folarin Kehinde January 17, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The US Supreme Court on Friday upheld a law that will ban TikTok in the United States, potentially denying the video-sharing app to 170 million users in the United States on January 19.

In a major defeat for TikTok, the court ruled that the law does not violate free speech rights and that the US government had demonstrated legitimate national security concerns about a Chinese company owning the app.

South Korean President Arrested After Failed Martial Law Decree

by Nelson Ugwuagbo January 15, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was arrested on Wednesday, marking the end of a weeks-long standoff with authorities over his failed bid to impose martial law. This makes him the first president in the nation’s history to be detained.

Yoon faces charges of insurrection following his attempt to declare martial law last month. In a pre-recorded video message released after his arrest, Yoon stated that he chose to cooperate with investigators to avoid “bloodshed,” though he disputed the legality of the investigation.

The former prosecutor and leader of the conservative People Power Party (PPP), who won the 2022 presidential election, could face life imprisonment or the death penalty if found guilty of insurrection.

Yoon had evaded arrest for weeks by remaining in his fortified residence, protected by loyal members of the Presidential Security Service (PSS). His security detail installed barbed wire and barricades around the compound, drawing criticism from opposition leaders who likened it to a “fortress.”

An earlier attempt to arrest Yoon on January 3 failed after a tense, hours-long standoff between his guards and anti-corruption investigators.

However, early on Wednesday, hundreds of police officers and investigators from the Corruption Investigation Office surrounded the residence once again. Some officers scaled walls and used back trails to reach the main building. After a five-hour standoff, authorities confirmed Yoon’s arrest.

The former president was taken in a convoy to the offices of the Corruption Investigation Office, where questioning began shortly after his arrival, according to Yonhap News Agency

16 people confirmed dead in Los Angeles fire incident

by Folarin Kehinde January 12, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

“We’re a nervous wreck,” Sarah Cohen told the Los Angeles Times of the threat to her Tarzana home.“Every time they drop water, it gets better. But then it gets worse again.”

At least 16 people were now confirmed dead from fires that have ripped through the city, leaving communities in ruins and testing the mettle of thousands of firefighters — and millions of California residents.

Despite heroic efforts, including precision sorties from aerial crews, the Palisades Fire continued to grow Saturday, pushing east towards the priceless collections of the Getty Center art museum and north to the densely populated San Fernando Valley.

“We’re a nervous wreck,” Sarah Cohen told the Los Angeles Times of the threat to her Tarzana home.

“Every time they drop water, it gets better. But then it gets worse again.”

Footage from the Mandeville Canyon area showed one home consumed, with a wall of flame licking up a hillside to menace others.

A brief lull in the wind was rapidly giving way to gusts that forecasters warned would feed the blazes for days to come.

“Critical fire-weather conditions will unfortunately ramp up again today for southern California and last through at least early next week,” the National Weather Service said.

“This may lead to the spread of ongoing fires as well as the development of new ones.”
