Trump Slaps Additional 25% Tariff on India For Buying Russian Oil

by Nelson Ugwuagbo August 6, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order imposing an additional 25 percent tariff on Indian goods in response to New Delhi’s continued purchase of Russian oil — a major funding source for Moscow’s war in Ukraine.

The new tariff, which takes effect in three weeks, will be applied on top of another 25 percent duty scheduled to come into force on Thursday. Existing exemptions for products already covered by sector-specific tariffs, such as steel and aluminum, will remain in place, as will exclusions for sensitive categories including pharmaceuticals.

The move marks a significant escalation in Washington’s efforts to pressure countries maintaining energy ties with Russia, even as it risks straining trade relations with India.

Arab and Muslim States Call for Hamas to Disarm, Hand Over Gaza to Palestinian Authority

by Nelson Ugwuagbo August 4, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Arab and Muslim nations including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt have, for the first time, collectively urged Hamas to disarm and relinquish control of the Gaza Strip in a bid to help end the ongoing war in the territory.

The unprecedented joint appeal was part of a declaration endorsed on Tuesday at a high-level United Nations conference in New York, co-hosted by Saudi Arabia and France. The statement received backing from the 22-member Arab League, all 27 members of the European Union, and an additional 17 countries.

The gathering was focused on advancing “the peaceful settlement of the question of Palestine and the implementation of the Two-State Solution.” The declaration outlines a series of measures deemed critical to achieving lasting peace.

“Governance, law enforcement and security across all Palestinian territory must lie solely with the Palestinian Authority, with appropriate international support,” the document states. It goes on to stress that, as part of efforts to bring the Gaza war to an end, “Hamas must end its rule in Gaza and hand over its weapons to the Palestinian Authority, with international engagement and support, in line with the objective of a sovereign and independent Palestinian State.”

The declaration also strongly condemned Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, which triggered the current conflict, and proposed the establishment of “a temporary international stabilization mission” in Gaza — to be deployed at the invitation of the Palestinian Authority and “under the aegis of the United Nations.”

We welcomed the readiness expressed by some Member States to contribute in troops,” the document noted, signaling possible international military participation aimed at stabilizing the region as part of any post-war transition.

Donald Trump Celebrates With Chelsea After Clinching Club World Cup Trophy

by Nelson Ugwuagbo July 14, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

U.S. President Donald Trump made a surprise appearance on the trophy presentation stage following Chelsea’s 3-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in a pre-season match held in New Jersey on Sunday.

Trump presented the winners’ trophy to Chelsea captain Reece James but remained on stage longer than expected. He stood beside James and goalkeeper Robert Sánchez, applauding as the Blues lifted the trophy, before eventually exiting the stage along with FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Speaking after the ceremony, England international James said: “They told me that he was going to present the trophy and then exit the stage, and I thought that he was going to exit the stage, but he wanted to stay. He just congratulated me and the team for lifting the trophy and told us to enjoy the moment.”

Chelsea forward Cole Palmer, who scored twice in the match, said he was aware of Trump’s attendance but not his involvement in the post-match presentation. “I knew he was going to be here but I didn’t know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy,” Palmer said.

Trump watched the match alongside Infantino and praised the atmosphere in an interview with DAZN during half-time. “I’m having a really great time,” he said.

In a longer interview aired later on Sunday, Trump referred to Infantino as “a friend” and commended his leadership in global football. “He’s done such a great job with the league and with soccer – or as they would call it ‘football’, but I guess we call it soccer. I’m not sure that change could be made very easily,” Trump said.

When jokingly asked if he could issue an executive order to rename the sport “football” in the U.S., Trump smiled and replied: “I think we could do that. I think I could do that.”

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Liberian President Receives Surprising Compliment on English from Trump

by Nelson Ugwuagbo July 10, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday complimented Liberian President Joseph Boakai on his command of the English language, despite English being Liberia’s official language and widely spoken by its citizens.

The remark came during a White House luncheon with African leaders. After brief comments by Boakai, Trump turned to him and asked, “Thank you, and such good English… Where did you learn to speak so beautifully? Where were you educated?”

Boakai, a business graduate who was educated in Liberia and speaks English as his first language, responded briefly. Facing away from the media, his low-toned reply made it difficult to discern his reaction, though it appeared restrained.

Trump, seated among several French-speaking West African presidents, continued, saying, “It’s beautiful English. I have people at this table can’t speak nearly as well.”

The exchange drew attention for its awkwardness and the apparent unfamiliarity with Liberia’s linguistic background.

Texas Flood Death Toll Surpasses 100 as Rescue Operations Continue

by Nelson Ugwuagbo July 8, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The death toll from devastating floods in Texas has risen to over 100, officials confirmed on Monday, as rescue teams continue the search for victims swept away by raging waters.

Among the dead are at least 27 girls and camp counselors who were attending a youth summer camp on a river when the floods struck during the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Authorities have warned of the possibility of further flooding, as ongoing rainfall continues to drench already saturated ground. The worsening weather conditions have complicated recovery efforts, which involve helicopters, boats, search dogs, and more than 1,750 emergency personnel.

Israel Strikes Iran, Targets Nuclear Facilities and Senior Military Figures

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 13, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Israel launched a large-scale airstrike on Iran early Friday, targeting approximately 100 sites including nuclear facilities and military command centres. The strikes resulted in the deaths of several high-ranking Iranian officials, including Armed Forces Chief of Staff Mohammad Bagheri and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander Hossein Salami, according to Iranian media.

Among the key targets was Iran’s Natanz atomic facility, which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described as central to Tehran’s nuclear enrichment programme. “These strikes will continue as many days as it takes,” Netanyahu stated, warning that intelligence indicated Iran was nearing the “point of no return” in its nuclear development.

Defence Minister Israel Katz said the operation sent a “strong and clear message,” asserting that individuals involved in efforts to destroy Israel would be “eliminated.”

In response, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed a “bitter and painful” retaliation. The Iranian military declared there would be “no limits” to its response, and later launched about 100 drones toward Israel. The Israeli military reported that its air defences intercepted the drones outside Israeli territory.

Neighbouring Jordan also reported intercepting drones and missiles that had violated its airspace, with air raid sirens sounding in the capital, Amman.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump told Fox News he had prior knowledge of the Israeli strikes, while emphasising that Iran “cannot have a nuclear bomb.” The U.S. government, however, stated it was not involved in the operation and warned Tehran against targeting American personnel or interests.

Iran dismissed the U.S. denial, saying the scale and coordination of the Israeli strikes could not have occurred without Washington’s involvement. “The United States will be held responsible for the consequences,” Tehran stated.

Musk vs. Trump: Billionaire and President Clash Over “Big Beautiful Bill”

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 6, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

President Donald Trump and billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk are locked in a bitter public feud that has gripped Washington and beyond. What began as a policy disagreement over Trump’s sweeping domestic legislation has spiraled into a war of words, with personal insults, explosive accusations, and threats of economic retaliation dominating headlines.

The conflict ignited when Musk, former head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), publicly denounced Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” a landmark legislative package that narrowly passed the House last month.

The bill, championed by Trump, promises massive tax cuts, significant reductions in federal spending, and strengthened border security.

Musk, however, slammed it on X as a “disgusting abomination,” warning that its projected $2.4 trillion to $5 trillion deficit increase would undermine his efforts to curb government waste.

His posts urging lawmakers to “KILL the BILL” put him at odds with Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson, who defended the legislation as a cornerstone of a broader fiscal strategy.

Tensions had been simmering long before the public clash. Musk’s 130-day tenure at DOGE, ending on May 30, 2025, was marked by bold moves—slashing federal jobs and disrupting agency operations—but also friction with White House insiders.

Chief of Staff Susie Wiles reportedly grew frustrated with Musk’s unilateral actions, such as issuing directives to federal workers via X without consulting senior staff.

Earlier in the year, Musk’s push to dissuade Trump from imposing widespread tariffs, citing risks to Tesla’s global sales and broader economic stability, further highlighted their diverging priorities.

Trump’s refusal to relent, coupled with Musk’s public spats with trade adviser Peter Navarro, laid the groundwork for the current conflict.

The feud exploded on June 5, 2025, when Musk and Trump traded barbs on X and Truth Social. Trump accused Musk of opposing the bill to protect Tesla’s interests, particularly as the legislation eliminates electric vehicle tax credits.

He escalated the attack by mocking Musk’s loyalty, suggesting he suffered from “Trump Derangement Syndrome,” and threatening to cancel billions in federal contracts with Musk’s companies, including SpaceX, a vital NASA partner.

Musk fired back with unprecedented ferocity, claiming on X that Trump’s 2024 election victory relied on his $270 million in campaign support, decrying the president’s “ingratitude.”

He endorsed a post calling for Trump’s impeachment and replacement by Vice President JD Vance, and in a stunning escalation, alleged that Trump’s name appears in the unreleased Jeffrey Epstein files, writing, “That is the real reason they have not been made public.

Have a nice day, DJT!” Trump retaliated by pulling the nomination of Musk’s preferred NASA chief and renewing threats against SpaceX contracts.

Musk briefly announced plans to decommission the Dragon spacecraft, critical for NASA’s space station missions, before backtracking to avoid crippling U.S. space operations.

The feud’s repercussions are far-reaching. Tesla’s stock plunged 14.3% on June 5, erasing roughly $150 billion in market value, as investors braced for potential fallout from Trump’s tariff policies and contract threats.

The rift has also strained Republican unity, with House members caught between loyalty to Trump and Musk’s financial influence through his super PAC.

Representative Troy Nehls called Musk’s attacks “irresponsible,” while others, like Representative Gabe Evans, expressed hope for reconciliation.

In the Senate, Musk’s opposition could tip the scales against the bill, already facing skepticism from fiscal hawks like Senators Rand Paul and Mike Lee.

Nonpartisan analyses warn that the bill’s deficit expansion, combined with Trump’s tariffs, risks economic turmoil, potentially triggering a recession by late 2025, as Musk has cautioned.

Elon Musk Resigns from Trump Administration

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 29, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has formally announced his departure from President Donald Trump’s administration, where he served as a senior advisor and de facto head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Musk, who was appointed to the role in November 2024, made the announcement on Wednesday night via a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating that his term as a Special Government Employee had come to an end.

“As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” Musk wrote. “@DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.”

Reuters reports that Musk exited the administration without holding a formal conversation with President Trump. His resignation came just hours after he publicly criticized the president’s newly introduced tax bill on Tuesday.

No official statement has been released by the White House regarding Musk’s departure.

Djibouti’s President Guelleh Eyes Sixth Term Despite Constitutional Limit

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 23, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Djiboutian President Ismail Omar Guelleh has not ruled out the possibility of seeking a sixth term in the country’s 2026 presidential election, despite a constitutional age limit that would bar his candidacy.

In an interview published on Friday by The Africa Report, the 77-year-old leader declined to give a direct answer when asked if he would run in April 2026.

“I won’t answer that,” Guelleh said. “What I can say is that I love my country too much to lead it into a reckless venture or sow division.”

Under Djibouti’s current constitution, candidates over the age of 75 are prohibited from contesting presidential elections, meaning a sixth term would require constitutional amendments.

Guelleh, widely known by his initials “IOG”, secured a fifth term in 2021 with 97 percent of the vote. His ruling party, the Union for the Presidential Majority (UMP), maintains a firm grip on parliament.

Guelleh came to power in 1999 after serving as chief of staff to Djibouti’s founding president, Hassan Gouled Aptidon, for 22 years. His tenure has been marked by political stability in a region often plagued by unrest.

Djibouti’s strategic location at the Horn of Africa has made it a key military hub for global powers, including the United States, France, and China, all of which maintain military bases in the country.
