King Charles Image Revealed On British Coin

by Folarin Kehinde September 30, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

King Charles III’s image on coin has been revealed for the first time.

The 50p coin is the first piece of new money that features the new monarch and will begin circulating in December.

The King’s portrait will first begin appearing on a special £5 Crown as well as on 50p coins that commemorate the Queen, MyLondon reports.

Nicola Howell, chief commercial officer at the Royal Mint said: “We expect customers will start to be able to receive the commemorative range from October and then we expect the 50p memorial circulating coin to be appearing in people’s change probably from December.”

Martin Jennings sculptured the King’s effigy which the Mint said has been personally approved by Charles.

Chris Barker from the Royal Mint Museum said: “Charles has followed that general tradition that we have in British coinage, going all the way back to Charles II actually, that the monarch faces in the opposite direction to their predecessor.”

He described the portrait as: “Dignified and graceful, which reflects his years of service”.

The Latin inscription surrounding the effigy reads: “• CHARLES III • D • G • REX • F • D • 5 POUNDS • 2022” which translates to: “King Charles III, by the Grace of God, Defender of the Faith”.

Anne Jessopp, chief executive officer of the Royal Mint, said: “The Royal Mint has been trusted to make coins bearing the monarch’s effigy for over 1,100 years and we are proud to continue this tradition into the reign of King Charles III.

“Although technology has progressed, we continue to honour British craftsmanship passed down through the centuries.

“Our team of skilled modellers, tool makers and engravers will ensure that the King’s effigy will be faithfully replicated onto millions of coins.

“Her Late Majesty ruled with heart and devotion for 70 years, and this memorial collection commemorates her remarkable legacy as Britain’s longest-serving monarch.

“To ensure everyone can hold a piece of history in their hand, the 50p will also enter circulation in the UK.”

Liz Truss Under Fire As British Pound Fall To Record Low

by Folarin Kehinde September 26, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Liz Truss the new British Prime Minister who replace Boris Johnson has come under sharp criticism after the pound hit record low against the dollar.

This was due to last week’s huge tax-cutting budget.

The main opposition Labour Party lambasted Truss for the massive spending plans, which some economists warn could further fuel inflation.

Labour’s finance spokeswoman Rachel Reeves described the situation as a “national emergency” and likened Truss and her chancellor of the exchequer Kwasi Kwarteng to “two desperate gamblers in a casino chasing a losing run”.

“The message from financial markets was clear on Friday and this morning that message is even more stark: sterling is down. That means higher prices, as the costs of imports rise,” she said.

“The cost of government borrowing is up. That means that more taxpayers money will go into paying the interest on our government debt.

“And in turn that means the cost of borrowing for working people will now go up to with higher mortgage repayments,” she told Labour’s annual conference in Liverpool, northwest England.

Britain has been facing a cost-of-living crisis with soaring energy prices coupled with inflation and wage stagnation.

Kwarteng was appointed finance minister by Truss earlier this month after she took office following a leadership battle to replace Boris Johnson as head of the ruling Conservative Party.

On Friday Kwarteng unveiled a multi-billion-pound package to support households and businesses.

He also slashed taxes, bringing forward a plan to cut the lowest rate of income tax and reducing the highest to 40 percent from 45 percent to kickstart the economy

But investors were spooked by the huge amount of borrowing likely needed for the package, which critics said would benefit the rich far more than the poorest hit by the cost-of-living crisis.

The cost of the energy support measures alone have been calculated at £60 billion ($65 billion) for only six months.

But economists estimate the whole tax package at between £100-200 billion.

The pound on Monday struck an all-time low at $1.0350 before regaining some ground to stand at $1.0728 around 1115 GMT.

The pound had already suffered a series of 37-year lows against the greenback this month on UK recession fears propelled by high inflation.

Russians Flee Country After President Putin Announce Mobilizaiton

by Folarin Kehinde September 23, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

A lot of Russians have been queuing up to leave the country after President Vladimir Putin announced a mobilization 300,000 reservists to join the war in Ukraine.

This mobilization is Russia’s first since World War two and one that has drawn a lot of criticism from leaders all over the world.

In a rare Television address to his nation, Putin declared a ‘partial mobilization’ of his country’s citizens.

He said: “When the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, we will certainly use all the means at our disposal to protect Russia and our people. This is not a bluff.”

“Those who are trying to blackmail us with nuclear weapons should know that the wind patterns can also turn in their direction, the president added – accusing the US and allies of seeking to destroy Russia.

After his address, google recorded a spike in searches like ‘How to leave Russia’ and ‘How to break an arm at home’. Also, there is a traffic jam at the border between Russia and Finland, as many desperate citizens try to flee the country to avoid mobilization.

The queue is reportedly more than 20 miles long and growing by the hour.

Independent journalist, Sotiri Dimpinoudis took to his social media to share first-hand footage of the traffic jam.

He said that the border is the only one still open to Russian civilians with Shengen visas.

Also, the mobilization announcement has led to an anti-mobilization protest by Russians in the city of Tomsk.

The addition of this troops would mean a major escalation of the Russian campaign in Ukraine, even as the Ukrainians are starting to chase Russia out of occupied territories.

Donald Trump Hints 2024 Presidential Run

by Folarin Kehinde September 8, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Former United States President Donald Trump has hinted that he might run for President in the 2024 Elections.

He dropped this hint at a White House campaign, with the former US president telling Indian television that a run for office would “make a lot of people very happy”.

“Everyone wants me to run. I am leading in the polls,” Trump said in an excerpt of an interview with NDTV to be broadcast in full later on Thursday.

“In every poll, in Republican polls and in Democrat polls, and I will make a decision in the very near future, I suspect. And I think that a lot of people are going to be very happy,” he added.

Donald Trump also asserted his claims that the 2020 election in which he lost to current President Joe Biden was rigged.

According to him, they were tremendous proof and evidence to back his claim.

The Republican has faced intense legal scrutiny over his efforts to overturn the results of the poll and over an attack on the US Capitol by his supporters on January 6 last year.

He is currently under investigation for potential mishandling of classified documents, with the FBI raiding his Florida home last month.

Trump has denied wrongdoing and called the raid “one of the most egregious assaults on democracy in the history of our country”.

In a speech on Saturday in Pennsylvania he hit back at assertions by Biden that he and his supporters are undermining US democracy, calling Biden an “enemy of the state”.

Liz Truss Emerges UK’s New Prime Minister

by Folarin Kehinde September 6, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Liz Truss, Britain’s 47-year-old foreign secretary has been appointed as next prime minister of UK and leader of the conservative party.

Truss is taking over from her former boss Boris Johnson who was ousted from downing street by lawmakers in his party.

Liz Truss gathered 81,326 votes against her rival, former finance minister Rishi Sunak who got 60,399 votes.

She will become the third female prime minister of the United Kingdoms after Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May.

In addition to the war in Ukraine and the fallout of Brexit, the new prime minister will inherit a vast range of economic and political problems. The Bank of England predicts Britain will suffer through protracted recession, beginning as early as October. Inflation already stands at 10 percent, with economists warning that 15 percent is possible.

In her acceptance speech, she reaffirmed that she will lead as a conservative true to her campaign.

“We need to show that we will deliver over the next two years. I will deliver on a bold plan to cut taxes and grow our economy; I will deliver on the energy crisis dealing with people’s energy bills but also dealing with the long-term issues we have on energy supply. I will deliver on the National Health Service. But we all will deliver for our country,” Ms Truss said.

She will be confirmed as Prime minister by Queen Elizabeth later today in the Balmoral Castle, Scotland.

Boris Johnson will tender his resignation to the Queen who will, after accepting, announce Ms Truss as the new prime minister.

China Arrests 100’s Over Bank Fraud

by Folarin Kehinde September 2, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Police in China have arrested 234 suspects allegedly involved in a rural banking scandal, a month after hundreds of depositors protested over their lost savings in one of the largest demonstrations the country has seen since the pandemic began.

Four banks in central China Henan province suspended cash withdrawals in April as regulators cracked down on mismanagement, freezing the funds of hundreds of thousands of customers and sparking protests that at times ended in violence.

Police said they had now arrested 234 people in connection with the scandal and that “significant progress” was being made in recovering stolen funds.

“A criminal gang… illegally controlled four village and town banks… and was suspected of committing a series of serious crimes,” police in the city of Xuchang said in a statement on Monday.

it said a criminal gang led by the alleged mastermind, Lv Yi, took control of four rural banks including Yuzhou Xinminsheng Village Bank, luring depositors with promises of annual returns as high as 18%.

Anguished depositors have staged several demonstrations in the city of Zhengzhou, Henan’s provincial capital, over the past two months to demand their savings back, but their calls had fallen on deaf ears.

In July, more than 1,000 depositors from across China gathered outside the Zhengzhou branch of the country’s central bank, the People’s Bank of China, to launch their largest protest yet. The peaceful demonstration was crushed violently by authorities, with police and plain-clothed security personnel forcefully dispersing protesters.

Following the protest, Henan’s financial regulator said depositors would be refunded, with the first payments being sent to bank customers with a combined total of less than 50,000 yuan ($7,200) deposited at a single bank.

On Monday, the financial authorities said they would launch another round of repayments to customers, this time focusing on those with deposits of between 400,000 yuan ($57,800) and 500,000 yuan ($72,200).

Depositors who have lost more would receive an initial sum of 500,000 yuan with the remainder reserved for now, according to the regulators.

“After this round of repayments, the centralized repayment work will be largely completed, and further matters will be dealt with by the four rural banks,” the statement said.

Runs on small Chinese banks have become more frequent in recent years and some have been accused of financial improprieties or corruption. But experts worry that a much bigger financial problem could be looming, caused by fallout from a real estate crash and soaring bad debts related to the Covid-19 pandemic.

About a quarter of the total assets in China’s banking system are held by around 4,000 small lenders, which often have opaque ownership and governance structures and are more vulnerable to corruption and the sharp economic slowdown.

China Suffers Severe Drought After Massive Heatwave Strikes Country

by Folarin Kehinde August 25, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Severe drought has hit China exacerbated by a record heatwave has spread across half of China and reached the normally frigid Tibetan Plateau, according to official data released ahead of more searing temperatures on Thursday.

The world’s second-largest economy has experienced over 70 days of heatwaves, flash floods and droughts — phenomena that scientists say are becoming more frequent and intense due to climate change.

Southern China has recorded its longest continuous period of high temperatures since records began more than 60 years ago, the agriculture ministry said this week.

Experts have said the intensity, scope and duration of the heatwave could make it one of the worst recorded in global history.

A chart from the National Climate Centre showed Wednesday that swathes of southern China — including the Tibetan Plateauwere experiencing “severe” to “extraordinary” drought conditions.

The worst-affected area the Yangtze river basin, stretching from coastal Shanghai to Sichuan province in China’s southwest is home to over 370 million people and contains several manufacturing hubs including the megacity of Chongqing.

The China Meteorological Administration predicted continued high temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in Chongqing and the provinces of Sichuan and Zhejiang Thursday.

But some regions gained relief from the heatwave. Parts of southwestern Sichuan were battered by heavy rains overnight, causing the evacuation of almost 30,000 people, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

And in the southeast, Typhoon Ma-on made landfall in coastal Guangdong province and Hong Kong Thursday morning.

“High temperatures have basically been alleviated in the regions of south China, Jiangxi and Anhui,” the meteorological administration said.

“But high temperatures will continue for the next three days in regions including the Sichuan basin and provinces surrounding Shanghai.”

SEVERE THREAT

China’s State Council on Wednesday announced a 10 billion yuan ($1.45 billion) subsidy to support rice farmers experiencing drought conditions, which authorities have warned pose a “severe threat” to this year’s autumn harvest.

China produces more than 95 percent of the rice, wheat and maize it consumes, but a reduced harvest could mean increased demand for imports in the world’s most populous country — putting further pressure on global supplies already strained by the conflict in Ukraine.

Wednesday’s CCTV evening news broadcast showed trucks supplying villagers who lacked drinking and agricultural water in rural Sichuan and Chongqing.

These regions have also been battling wildfires since last week, exacerbated by high temperatures and water scarcity.

Livestock owners have fared badly, with Chongqing authorities pledging emergency measures to protect pig farms and a Sichuan farmer’s tearful plea going viral after she said all her chickens had died due to the heatwave and power cuts.

Some Chongqing residents complained on social media about queueing for hours in sweltering heat for compulsory mass testing required in the wake of a Covid outbreak.

In parts of Sichuan and Chongqing, locals seeking cooler temperatures have taken to sleeping in car parks and subway stations due to daily power cuts.

Temperatures as high as 45 degrees Celsius (113 Fahrenheit) have led multiple Chinese provinces to impose industrial power cuts, as cities struggle to cope with a surge in demand for electricity.

Record low water levels on the Yangtze River have also put pressure on the region’s hydropower generators, with the National Energy Administration pledging Wednesday to make up the shortfall by ramping up coal production.

Recent heat broke records in Sichuan, where one county recorded a temperature of 44 degrees Celsius (111 Fahrenheit) Wednesday.

China To Forgive Debt of 23 African Countries

by Folarin Kehinde August 23, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The People’s Republic of China has committed to forgive interest free loans of 23 African Countries.

The Chinese foreign minister made this statement known in a forum on China-Africa cooperation. According to him, the 23 countries whose debts would be forgiven have debts that have matured since 2021. Wang Yi however failed to specify the particular African countries that would be forgiven.

He pledged that China would continue to actively support and participate in the construction of major infrastructure projects in Africa through financing, investment and assistance.

We will also continue to increase imports from Africa, support the greater development of Africa’s agricultural and manufacturing sectors, and expand co-operation in emerging industries such as the digital economy, health, green and low-carbon sectors.”

“What Africa wishes for is a favourable and amicable cooperation environment, not the zero-sum Cold War mentality,” Wang said, according to the post.

Since the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation took place in Senegal in November 2021, Beijing has delivered $3 billion of $10 billion of credit facilities pledged to African financial institutions, Wang said in the speech.

In addition, this year China has agreed to tariff-free entry to 98% of exports from 12 African countries and has provided emergency food assistance to Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia and Eritrea, he said.

“So far this year, China has signed exchange of letters with 12 African countries on zero tariff for 98% of their export items to China. We have provided emergency food assistance to Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Eritrea. More African agricultural produce has reached the Chinese market through the green lanes,” he added.

It is to be noted that China is the leading lender to over 32 African countries and the continent owes China more than $148 billion dollars combined.

Kenya Elections: Results To Be Announced Soon

by Folarin Kehinde August 15, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Kenyans are moving closer to learning the outcome of their closely-fought presidential elections after days of anxious waiting.

Kenyans voted on Tuesday last week in six elections, choosing a new President as well as senators, governors, lawmakers, women representatives and some 1,500 county officials.

Deputy President William Ruto was leading with slightly more than 51 percent of the vote against 48 per cent for Raila Odinga, based on official results from more than 80 percent of constituencies, according to a tally published by the Daily Nation newspaper.

Ruto, 55, is deputy president but is effectively running as the challenger after outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta threw his support behind his former foe Odinga, the 77-year-old veteran opposition leader making his fifth bid for the top job

Both men had on Sunday appealed for calm as the wait for the final results of the August 9 vote dragged on.

Polling day passed off largely peacefully, but memories of vote-rigging and deadly violence in 2007-08 and 2017 still haunt Kenyans.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission is under intense pressure to deliver a clean poll in a country regarded as a beacon of stability in a troubled region.

Results must be issued by Tuesday at the latest, according to Kenya’s constitution.
