BREAKING: APC National Chairman Umar Ganduje resigns

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has resigned from his position.

Ganduje’s resignation was confirmed in a post by a former media aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad on Friday.

Ahmad wrote: “The National Chairman of our great party, the All Progressives Congress(APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has resigned from his position, effective immediately, as confirmed by multiple sources.”

Though APC has yet to issue an official statement on his resignation, sources familiar with the matter hinted that Ganduje cited health reasons, suggesting that political tension within the party may have also played a role in his decision to step down.

BREAKING: Tinubu Set to Reinstate Fubara, Bars Him from Seeking Re-Election

President Bola Tinubu has agreed to reinstate Siminalayi Fubara as Governor of Rivers State, but under the condition that Fubara must not seek re-election in 2027.

The decision followed a closed-door meeting held on Thursday night at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

In attendance were FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Governor Fubara, suspended Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly Martins Amaewhule, and several lawmakers.

It is understood that the agreement is part of a broader peace deal aimed at restoring political stability and democratic order in Rivers State.

Under the terms of the truce, Fubara will serve out his current four-year term but is barred from contesting for a second term.

“The arrangement is clear: no second term, no local government control, and peace will return,” a presidency source familiar with the negotiations said.

The deal also grants Wike political leverage. According to sources, the FCT Minister will nominate all local government chairpersons across the 23 Local Government Areas of Rivers State. This move is expected to restore grassroots control to Wike’s camp.

“The president made it clear that Rivers cannot afford a prolonged crisis. The deal is about restoring calm, but it comes at a steep cost for Fubara,” another source explained.

In addition, Fubara has agreed to pay all outstanding allowances and entitlements owed to the 27 lawmakers loyal to Wike, who were earlier suspended by the state assembly. In exchange, the lawmakers will refrain from pursuing any impeachment proceedings against him.

“Wike is the real winner here. By controlling the local government chairmen, he retains significant influence over the state’s political machinery, which will be crucial for 2027,” a source added.

Wike, Fubara End Political Feud After Tinubu-Led Peace Meeting

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, on Thursday night confirmed that the political crisis between him and Governor Siminalayi Fubara has been resolved.

Wike disclosed this to journalists after a closed-door reconciliation meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, which was brokered by President Bola Tinubu.

According to the FCT Minister, both camps have reached a final agreement to put their differences aside and work in unity.

“We have all agreed to work together with the governor, and the governor also agreed to work together with all of us. We are members of the same political family,” Wike stated.

He acknowledged that the disagreement had persisted for several months but maintained that Thursday’s resolution marked the end of hostilities.

“Yes, just like humans, you have a disagreement, and then you also have a time to settle your disagreement,” he said. “And that has been finally concluded today, and we have come to report to Mr. President that this is what we have agreed. So for me, everything is over.”

Wike also called on political supporters on both sides to remain calm and embrace unity going forward.

“I enjoin everybody who believes to work with us, to also work together with everybody. There’s no more acrimony. There’s nothing to say,” he added.

Tinubu Conference Centre Already booked till 2027 – Wike

Federal Capital Territory FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has again defended the decision of the President Bola Tinubu administration to renovate the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja, saying in spite of the criticisms, the structure has now been booked till 2027.

He said he is trying to adjust the timetable to see how the FCT Administration can accommodate an application by the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review to use the place.

The minister spoke on Thursday during the commissioning of the Kugbo Bus and Taxi Terminal.

BREAKING: Tinubu rejects NDLEA bill over crime proceeds clause

President Bola Tinubu has declined to sign the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Bill, 2025 into law.

The President’s decision not to sign the bill passed by both chambers of the National Assembly was contained in a letter read in the Green Chamber on Thursday during plenary.

The President, citing Section 58(4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), explained that the proposed law seeks to empower the NDLEA to retain a portion of the proceeds from drug-related crimes, a move he said contradicts existing financial regulations.

He noted that under the current system, “All proceeds of crime are paid into the government’s Confiscated and Forfeited Properties Account. Disbursements to any recovery agency, including the NDLEA, can only be made by presidential approval, subject to the consent of the Federal Executive Council and the National Assembly.”

The President maintained there was no compelling reason to alter a process designed to uphold accountability through executive and legislative oversight.

Tinubu would have been on the streets if he weren’t president – Ali Ndume

The lawmaker representing Borno South Senatorial District, Ali Ndume has condemned the activities and policies implemented by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Ndume in an interview with Arise Television on Tuesday said that with the growing hardship, economic instability and insecurity across states in Nigeria, Tinubu would not have been silent if another person were to be the president.

Stating that the president is known as someone who does not hesitate to speak on issues of governance, Ndume said Tinubu would have led a protest if he were not in charge of the government.

“I am a son of nobody who became somebody without knowing anybody.

“Ask the president (Tinubu); I’m not his dependent, I’m his ally. If there’s one thing I like and I copied from Mr. President, you can get somebody to argue on that. If we were to swap positions and I were the president doing the same thing he is doing now, he would have been on the street.

“He has done it before, to protest, even if the government belongs to him. If the wrong thing is happening,” Ndume noted.

He also stated that he would continue to be on the side of truth irrespective of whose ox is gored.

“Even today, somebody from the government is saying, look, why don’t you come over, I will not come over, I am a Senator and under a real democratic setting, the president is supposed to lobby me on issues because he doesn’t have a vote for me, I have a vote for him.

“Whether in the Senate or the general elections. And you know? I strongly believe that this power or this position is God who will take it away from me, not anybody. But there’s a responsibility on me to always speak the truth,” he added.

President Bola Tinubu has announced his resolve to visit Benue on Wednesday following the continued killing of some residents by suspected Fulani pastoralists.

The president disclosed this on Monday when he commissioned The Greater Abuja Water Supply Network, Loops 1, 2, 5 & 6 of the Federal Capital City, FCC.

“While I sympathise with the Benue people, I have spoken to the governor, the leadership and people of Benue to accept our condolences and try hard, very consciously, to maintain peace and harmony among themselves.

“I have always said we are one single, huge family living in the same house, say in different rooms but living together in harmony which should be the result of our diversity for prosperity. We should be able to manage our anger and frustrations.

Vanguard Newspaper has ignited widespread criticism for its decision to prioritize a front-page story on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike commissioning a water supply project in Abuja, while the gruesome killings in Benue State over the weekend were relegated to lesser coverage.

The attacks, which took place in Daudu and Yelewata communities of Guma Local Government Area, claimed at least 59 lives, with local sources estimating up to 200 deaths, including military and civil defence personnel. The violence, attributed to suspected armed herdsmen, has intensified calls for urgent federal action to address the escalating insecurity in Benue.

The choice of Vanguard’s front-page headline on Monday, June 16, 2025, drew sharp reactions on social media, particularly on X, where users accused the newspaper of downplaying the tragedy to favor political optics. One user, @Winningmindset7, expressed dismay, stating, “Over 200 people killed in Benue, and Vanguard’s front page is about Tinubu and Wike’s water project? This is shameful.” Another, @pereyiii, questioned whether political influence swayed the editorial decision, asking, “Has Tinubu’s APC bought Vanguard’s silence on the Benue massacre?”

The Benue killings, described by witnesses as brutal and systematic, involved homes being torched and entire families slaughtered. President Tinubu responded on Sunday, condemning the “senseless bloodletting” and directing security chiefs to restore peace, as stated by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga.

However, the federal government’s response has been criticized as inadequate, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and civil society groups like HURIWA demanding stronger measures, including declaring a state of emergency in Benue to curb the recurring violence.

2027: We will vote Atiku if Shettima is dropped – APC members threaten as Crisis rocks Party

Tension gripped Sunday’s All Progressives Congress North‑East stakeholders’ meeting in Gombe after delegates threatened to back former Vice President Atiku Abubakar if current Vice President Kashim Shettima is removed from President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 ticket.

The gathering at the International Conference Centre was intended to reaffirm support for Mr. Tinubu’s second‑term bid, but erupted in chaos when Zonal Vice Chairman Mustapha Salihu concluded his speech without mentioning Shettima. Video footage showed an enraged party member hurling a chair at Salihu as he fled the stage, while another delegate lobbed a plastic bucket in protest.

Salihu had told the audience, “We have no business not supporting this party with all the juicy appointments and responsibilities given to us by this government. I would want all members of the zonal executive committee to stand up so that we will do the proper endorsement, because it is the zonal executive committee that holds the ticket. We want to reaffirm and also adopt the endorsement earlier done by the national working committee, that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is endorsed to be a sole candidate for the 2027 election.”

The omission prompted a chorus of “Shettima! Shettima! Shettima!” and swift intervention by security operatives. “It’s an insult to the entire region that our own son, the Vice President, was not even mentioned,” fumed a Borno delegate. “This is a calculated attempt to sideline Shettima, and we will resist it with everything we have.”

Before the fracas, the governors of Yobe, Borno and Gombe—Mai Mala Buni, Babagana Zulum and Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya—had each voiced their backing for the Tinubu‑Shettima ticket. Governor Yahaya declared, “The North‑East is fully behind the President and the Vice President. Their leadership has brought renewed hope to this region.”

LEADING REPORTERS learned that Despite that show of unity, APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje’s closing remarks failed to quell anger. Though he acknowledged Shettima—“we are proud of his deputy, his Vice President, it is one ticket according to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”—many delegates remained unconvinced and chanted, “No Shettima, no APC in the North‑East.”

Several threatened mass defection to the Peoples Democratic Party. “If Shettima is dropped, I will personally lead my people to vote for Atiku,” warned an Adamawa chieftain. “We won’t be taken for granted.”

The meeting ended abruptly as dignitaries exited amid shouts and chairs being thrown. Outside, police deployed teargas to disperse hundreds of agitated party faithful. An eyewitness, James Abass, warned, “This is more than just a misunderstanding. It’s a sign of serious internal divisions within the ruling party that could trigger mass defections or the rise of a counter‑movement if not urgently addressed.”

A source familiar with the zonal working committee disclosed that all North‑East NWC members—except Mustapha Salihu—had formally supported Tinubu and Shettima. The lone dissenting voice, the source said, was Salihu himself, against four colleagues who backed the joint ticket.

Presidency Apologizes After Naming Living Icons in Posthumous Honours

A moment meant to celebrate Nigeria’s democratic heroes took an awkward turn on Thursday when the Presidency mistakenly listed two living figures—Pa Reuben Fasoranti and Dr. Edwin Madunagu—under its posthumous honours during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Democracy Day speech at the National Assembly.

The blunder drew swift public attention and raised eyebrows, prompting a formal apology from the Presidency just hours later.

In an official statement, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, admitted the mistake, calling it an unfortunate oversight.

“Under the Posthumous Award category, the names of Pa Reuben Fasoranti, the Afenifere leader, and Dr. Edwin Madunagu were incorrectly included,” Onanuga acknowledged. “Both distinguished individuals are very much alive and should not have appeared in the posthumous category.”

Onanuga assured the public that the Presidency is taking immediate steps to correct the error across all State House communication channels.

“We sincerely regret this oversight. We shall make the necessary corrections across all State House digital platforms. We appreciate your understanding,” the statement added.

The Democracy Day ceremony was intended to honour a range of individuals—both living and deceased—who have played significant roles in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement.

Despite the unintended gaffe, the event saw the recognition of several notable national figures for their sacrifices and contributions.

Observers have called on the Presidency to tighten vetting processes for such sensitive recognitions to avoid future errors that could embarrass or misrepresent national icons.
