Army denies hijack of armoured vehicles, kidnap of 150 in Sokoto

by Folarin Kehinde September 2, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Defence Headquarters has denied that bandits in Zamfara State hijacked two armoured vehicles.

It also refuted claims that a large number of civilians were killed and mass buried by terrorists, as well as reports that over 150 terrorists were kidnapped also by terrorists in Sokoto State.

The DHQ’s response was following videos that had emerged over the weekend.

In the first video, the bandits claimed they hijacked two armoured vehicles from the troops and were seen celebrating it.

In another video, terrorists were shown conducting a mass burial for citizens, while the last video claimed that over 150 residents were kidnapped in Sokoto State.

In a statement on Monday, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj Gen Edward Buba, said the videos were fake.

Explaining what happened in Zamfara, he said the two Armoured vehicles got stuck due to the swampy nature of the area while troops were trying to outflank the terrorists gathering at Kwashabawa Village.

He added that the troops demobilised the vehicles to prevent the terrorists from making use of it.

Buba said, “ On August 29, troops of OP HADARIN DAJI deployed at FOB Zurmi in Zurmi LGA of Zamfara State, embarked on fighting patrol to dislodge terror gathering at Kwashabawa Village. Troops engaged the terrorists en route to the location.

“During the fight, while attempting to outflank the terrorist. Quantity 2 of troops MRAPs got bogged down due to the swampy terrain occasioned by the rain. While troops tried to extricate the MRAPs, the terrorists massed up, knowing the challenge troops had encountered with the MRAPs.

“Subsequently, troops dismounted and demobilised the MRAPs when efforts to backload them were futile. The sad demobilization of the MRAPs by troops was to prevent it from being useful to the terrorists after abandonment. These situations further illustrate the effect of weather in changing conditions for ground operations.”

Buba also said the trending video of terrorists conducting mass burials for citizens never happened in the country.

He said, “In a related development, the attention of DHQ has been drawn to a trending video propagated from the terrorist camp. The video depicted the killing of several civilians in a mass grave. It must be noted that the incident never took place in Nigeria. Rather, it sadly took place in a nearby African country faced with terrorism. “

He stated that the rumoured abduction of citizens in Sokoto was planted by terrorists to rubbish the win recorded by troops.

Buba said, “The terrorist, in an act of desperation, tried to manipulate the situation to mislead gullible members of the public. The armed forces unequivocally state that at no time were 150 persons abducted in Gobir (Sokoto State). The rumoured abduction was deliberately planted by the terrorist to undermine troops’ winning efforts and cover up terrorist weakness.”

Buba, therefore, urged the citizens to be mindful of the antics of the terrorists, adding that the terrorists resorting to propaganda is not uncommon in war.

He said, “On the whole, the public is urged to be circumspect of the antics of the terrorist to propagate misinformation, disinformation and fake news as part of their war propaganda effort. These situations are not uncommon in war.

“The dynamic and ever-changing environment of war creates some of these experiences. Nevertheless, troops retain operational flexibility to make adjustments in achieving the strategic objective of winning the war.”

US Drone Kills Al-Qaeda Terrorist Leader

by Folarin Kehinde August 2, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

A United States drone strike killed Al Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri at a hideout in the Afghan capital, President Joe Biden said Monday, adding “justice had been delivered” to the families of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

In a televised address, Biden said he gave the final go-ahead for the high-precision strike that successfully targeted Zawahiri in the Afghan capital over the weekend.

“Justice has been delivered and this terrorist leader is no more,” Biden said, adding that he hoped Zawahiri’s death would bring “closure” to families of the 3,000 people killed in the United States on 9/11.

A senior administration official said Zawahiri was on the balcony of a house in Kabul when he was targeted with two Hellfire missiles, an hour after sunrise on July 31, and that there had been no US boots on the ground in Afghanistan.

“We are not aware of him ever leaving the safe house. We identified Zawahiri on multiple occasions for sustained periods of time on the balcony of where he was ultimately struck,” the official said.

According to the official’s account, the president gave his green light for the strike on July 25 — as he was recovering in isolation from Covid-19. Biden said there were no civilian casualties in the operation.

Bank of Agric MD Regains Freedom After Family Paid Ransom of N100m

by Leading Reporters April 7, 2022
written by Leading Reporters

The Managing Director of the Bank of Agriculture, Alwan Hassan has regained his freedom, LeadingReporters can authoritatively report. His release was said to have followed a ransom of N100m paid to secure his release.

The terrorists bombed the Abuja-Kaduna bound train on Monday last week, killing many passengers and abducting many others.

The MD who was travelling to Kaduna was abducted alongside many others who are still being held captive for ten days now.

Before he was released, terrorists released a video showing the Agric Bank Managing Director standing between them.

The terrorists could be seen in military camouflage and in veiled faces to hid their identity, while fully armed.

In the video, terrorists broadcast to the Nigerian government to do the needful to ensure the release of other captives.

In the about one minute and twenty one seconds video broadcast, the terrorists told government that they don’t need money, but “government should do the needful”

“We are releasing this captive, Alwan Hassan, just because of the month of Ramadan and his plea because of his age.

We are not interested in money but the government knows what we want and if they don’t act fast to secure the release of the other abductees, we would not have any regret for our action”, one of the terrorists said in the video.

The Bank of Agric Managing Director who was directed to Bank of Agric MD Regains Freedom After Family Paid Ransom of N100m to government in the video, pleaded with the Nigerian government to accede to the need of the terrorists so that other captives can be released.

‘’There are many captives with our abductors here and out of pity, they decided to release me and due to the month of Ramadan, I am appealing to the government to save the lives of others with them,’’ Alwan Hassan said.

Though, the terrorists said they didn’t need money, a close family source involved in the negotiation confirmed that a sum of N100 million was paid as ransom.

The terrorists have since confirmed that they were responsible for the Abuja-Kaduna bound train attack on March 28.

The cost of toying with insecurity.

by Leading Reporters May 14, 2021
written by Leading Reporters

Security or the lack of it is a very serious issue. In Nigeria, neither the government nor the people are doing anything about the bourgeoning insecurity beyond the usual condemnation.

The National Assembly is making permutations for the next round of elections in 2023. Remi Tinubu for instance, is already seeing herself in the seat of the first lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Her desperate ambition would make her dismiss anyone who dares speak against the chaos in the land as a wailing opposition member. Her husband is no better either.

Tinubu of the ‘where are the cows’ fame sees the presidency as his legal right, and whatever hurdle in his way must be removed, even if it is the entire south west. If he has to rule over the ashes of a burned down Nigeria, so be it.

Muhammadu Buhari, the president of Nigeria is laid back. He watches as the conflagration continues to consume the country. One cannot tell whether he is incapable or unwilling to arrest the situation. He is just there, managed by abusive, ambitious and arrogant sycophants such as Femi Adesina and Garba Shehu. These two unprofessionally dish out statements that ought to be heard at peppersoup joints as ‘presidential’ position on sensitive issues of security.

The People’s Democratic Party,  Nigeria’s main opposition party is still trying to reconcile itself to the fact that it is not a non-government organisation but a political party whose major concern ought to be putting the monstrously chaotic APC on its toes. The PDP is still weeping from behind its secretary’s keypad, typing absolutely boring press statements that ordinary Nigerians are too hungry to read.

The people are more likely to be worse that all the political stakeholders mentioned above. They sit in the market, in the buses, in beer parlours, church fellowships, jumaat services and their village meetings talking in hushed tones about the unfolding carnage but none has the balls to join Sowore, Adeyanju and Aisha Yesufu in protesting.

So, we allow the marauders to go on rampage unabated. They kill, maim, rape, close down schools, destroy economies, scare people from the farms and do as they please. To make matters worse, the fear of the kidnappers and killers has caused schools to close down.

Recently, we heard that the horde of killers are converging on Abuja. And the army had taken steps to form a ring around the Villa, NNPC and the barracks. This sends only one signal to the vulnerable people: you are on your own. Veritas University and other schools around Abuja hurriedly closed down and students sent home.

No one is taking time to analyse the implications of these now until we appear in other countries after ten years from now and being to act like people from the stone age. The implications are too far reaching to be over emphasized. One of the results of this enchanted complacency and docility is that we are going to have to triple our efforts to catch up, if we ever will, with other countries in terms of technology and development, after Buhari’s reign of anachronism. Forget the joke about a certain Digital Economy. We know that we are opposite of being digital.

Microsoft and the Federal Government have decided to partner in the interest of the masses. According to reports, the partnership is to create thousands of direct jobs and hundreds of thousands of downline jobs. This is a very good initiative. It is quite commendable that the government is this thoughtful. But would Microsoft set up their office in a country where the president begs terrorists to release their victims? Would they endanger the lives of their staff to send them here only to be kidnapped? Would they take the most unreasonable risk of setting up an office with multimillion dollar equipment only to be bombed to ashes by a bad of pampered terrorists who would be arrested and rewarded?

Already, we have a very archaic educational system that churns out misfits for the evolving manpower demand. Then we are closing schools. In a decade from now, there would be a yawning human resources gap in Nigeria. We would have to import expertise and even mid level know how to man sensitive positions, leading to huge financial haemorrhage from an already pauperised economy.

Unless the next administration is manned by a learned, committed, patriotic and technocratic leader, the country is going to be so broke that citizens would migrate to hitherto poorer countries.

Another major consequence would be the already glaring famine. Given that bandits, herdsmen and Boko Haram have combined to kill farmers and farming in Nigeria, food supply has declined internally. Then the government has decided to block food importation. The only option left is to scramble for the little that’s within the country at very exorbitant prices. This is inflation. Now, the government is pronouncing itself broke. It is going to cut salaries but not that of the legislature and executive. Theirs is sacrosanct. The masses who form the bulk of everyday transactions are being rendered powerless. It can only mean one thing. Increased prices and inadequate purchasing power. A trader can’t sell below his cost price, and the buyer cannot buy at his new price. That’s a dilemma.

Another foreseeable problem is brain drain. We must not kid ourselves,  many people are running out of this country daily. Forget Lai Mohammed’s tantrums. The country is emptying its best into other countries. Doctors, engineers and other professionals are all running away from a collapsing Nigeria. After spending decades studying in Nigeria’s excruciating education climate, no one would wait for an unlettered member of a rag tag army of Boko Haram to waste him. The best is to run away.

The next president of Nigeria has a lot of work on his hands in an attempt to lift Nigeria out of the current abyss it has found itself in. And we all have a job on our hands before we begin to look up to Benin republic for regional leadership.

The time to salvage our country is now. We must all stand up to be counted.

To be continued.

Recall that the National Security Adviser Mohammed Babagana Monguno has recently alleged that the immediate past Army leadership could not give account of the Billions of Dollars collected by it for arms purchases, a position he later shifted and claimed to have been quoted out of context.

Nigerians decried the recent non-career appointment of the immediate past Service Chiefs by President Muhammadu Buhari, insisting that the appointment was hastily done by President Buhari to give the Service Chiefs a shield from prosecution over many allegations bordering on criminal diversion of funds and corruption enrichment of selves by the service chiefs at the detriment of Nigerians who are daily killed, maimed and raped by terrorists, bandits and other criminals.
