Terrorists plan fresh attacks in Ondo, Kogi —DSS

by Folarin Kehinde October 22, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Department of State Services, DSS, yesterday, raised the alarm over an imminent terrorist attack on some communities in Ondo and Kogi states by the Islamic State of West Africa Province, ISWAP.

A confidential memo dated October 20, 2025, that was addressed to the Brigade Commander of the 32 Artillery Brigade, Nigerian Army Corps of Artillery, Owena Cantonment, Akure, the security service warned that credible intelligence confirmed plans by the insurgents to launch coordinated assaults on several communities.

Signed by Hi Kana, Director of Security, DSS Ondo State Command, the memo, specifically listed Eriti Akoko and Oyin Akoko in Akoko North-West Local Government Area as well as Owo town in Owo Local Government Area, as potential targets.

The Secret Service warned that the terrorists had already commenced surveillance on soft targets in the affected areas and called on the military to heighten security operations to forestall any attack.““Intelligence confirmed plans by members of ISWAP to carry out coordinated attacks on communities in Ondo and Kogi states anytime soon.

“The level of security alertness across the identified communities should be immediately scaled up to prevent loss of lives and property.”

Recall that this security alert is coming three years after the June 2022, massacre at St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, where over 40 worshippers were killed by suspected ISWAP in cold blood during morning mass.

Vanguard gathered that a security meeting held on Tuesday with stakeholders from the two Police Area Commands in the Akoko region — Ikare and Iwaro-Oka, by the state police commissioner Adebowale Lawal, was in connection with the security alert.

Spokesperson of the Ondo Police Command, Ayanlade Olayinka said that the meeting is “in a renewed effort to prevent the breakdown of law and order, and in line with the proactive policing strategies of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun.

“The Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Command, CP Adebowale Lawal, on Tuesday, convened a high-powered security meeting and community engagement session with stakeholders from the two Police Area Commands in the Akoko region — Ikare and Iwaro-Oka.

Firm to Build $15bn Refinery in Ondo, Nigeria’s Second Largest After Dangote

by Folarin Kehinde August 2, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Backbone Infrastructure will build a $15 billion refinery in Nigeria’s Ondo State, with a capacity of 500,000 barrels per day. This facility will be the country’s second largest, trailing only the Dangote refinery.

Backbone Infrastructure Nigeria Limited (BINL) announced on Wednesday, July 9, that it will construct a new crude oil refinery with a capacity of 500,000 barrels per day in Ondo State. The project, estimated at around $15 billion, will be developed in partnership with the state government through the Ondo State Development and Investment Promotion Agency (ONDIPA) within the Ilaje industrial free zone.

The memorandum of understanding is scheduled for signing on July 15, 2025. According to BINL officials, discussions are also underway with the state-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) to include the public enterprise in the project.

No details have yet been provided regarding the mobilization of resources required for the infrastructure.

It is confirmed, however, that the project will be implemented in phases. The first phase, a 100,000-barrel-per-day unit, is scheduled for completion within 48 months. BINL also plans to develop related infrastructure such as roads, storage tanks, terminals, and handling equipment.

With its announced capacity, the future refinery will become the second largest in Nigeria, trailing only the Dangote Group’s facility, which has a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day. The Dangote refinery began production in 2023, following a construction process that cost nearly $20 billion, with expenditures largely inflated by COVID-19-related logistical delays.

According to Wale Adekola, Vice President of BINL, the project is designed to supply petroleum products to the domestic market, feedstock to local industries, and finished products for export.

The announcement is part of a broader strategy by BINL, which plans to invest $4 billion in Nigeria’s mining sector, relying on public-private partnerships.

If the initiative materializes, it could strengthen Nigeria’s energy sovereignty while boosting local growth and public revenue. However, its success will depend on financial close, regulatory stability, and the ability to stay on schedule in an environment where delays are common.

written by Folarin Kehinde

A vehicle reportedly belonging to the convoy of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has killed a seven-year-old girl identified as Saratu Lawal in Akure, Ondo State.

The incident was confirmed by multiple eyewitnesses.

The First Lady was in the state to launch the South-West phase of the Renewed Hope Initiative, a federal programme aimed at improving the welfare of women and girls nationwide. As part of the event, over 10,000 professional kits were distributed to nurses and midwives across the region.

The incident took place around the Oba Ile area, as the convoy was en route from the Akure Airport to the programme venue, sources say. The sources also confirmed that the vehicle, a butter-coloured Hilux in the motorcade was said to have hit the girl.

“A seven years old girl by the name Saratu Lawal, and a pupil of Islamiyar Arabic School, Shasha, was knocked down by a butter-coloured Hilux in the government convoy of her Excellency, the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is on official visit to Ondo State,” a source disclosed.Nigerian cultural tours

The source further revealed that the accident occurred near the Oba Ile Central Mosque on Thursday morning.

“It claimed the life of the child as every effort to save her could not yield the desired result even when she was rushed to the primary healthcare in Oba Ile,” the source added.

The father of the deceased, Malam Lawali, a trader at the Oba Ile Market, confirmed the loss of his daughter and said he has “handed everything to God.”

Saratu’s body has since been returned to the family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

As of the time of filing this report, the police have not issued an official statement regarding the incident.

Ondo NULGE chairman dies after slumping at filling station amid fuel scarcity

by Folarin Kehinde September 10, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The fuel scarcity crisis in Nigeria has taken a tragic turn, as the chairman of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) for Akure South Local Government, Oluwatuyi Olasoji, has passed away.

Olasoji collapsed while waiting to purchase fuel at a filling station in Akure, Ondo State.

Local reports indicate that the incident occurred last week when Olasoji was attempting to buy Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

After slumping, he was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Center in Owo, where he underwent surgery. Despite efforts to save him, he passed away on Monday, September 9.

Fuel scarcity has worsened nationwide, leading to long queues at petrol stations and increased transport fares. As traffic conditions deteriorate, many commuters have been left stranded.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) recently addressed the issue, stating that the situation would improve in the coming days.

“The market has been deregulated, meaning that petrol prices are now determined by market forces rather than by the government or NNPC Ltd. Additionally, the exchange rate plays a significant role in influencing these prices,” the NNPCL said.

The nation awaits the anticipated commencement of fuel lifting from the Dangote Refinery, scheduled for mid-September.

BREAKING: Ondo Lawmakers Meet, May Declare Aiyedatiwa Acting Governor

by Folarin Kehinde November 24, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Ondo State House of Assembly is set to hold a plenary session today to discuss the state’s political situation, including the possibility of declaring Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa as acting governor.

Sources close to the matter have indicated that the lawmakers may take this step due to Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s ongoing health issues, which have prevented him from resuming his duties. Governor Akeredolu is currently recuperating at his private residence in Ibadan, Oyo State.

While some lawmakers are reportedly in favour of declaring Aiyedatiwa acting governor, others have expressed opposition. It has also been gathered that the National Secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reportedly given its approval for the plenary session.

“The lawmakers are ready to meet today (Friday). One of the agenda of the sitting is the declaration of Lucky Aiyedatiwa as the acting governor. Though some of the lawmakers may not be at the meeting today because they are not in support of Aiyedatiwa becoming an acting governor the national leadership of the APC knows about and has approved the meeting. So they may declare Aiyedatiwa acting governor today,” the source reportedly said.

Olatunji Oshati, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, confirmed the development but declined to say definitively whether or not Aiyedatiwa would be declared acting governor. He stated that the House would be “reviewing the political situation today as directed by our national leaders.”

Recall that President Bola Tinubu has fixed today to meet with members of the Ondo State House of Assembly in Abuja to discuss the ongoing political crisis.
