Tension has engulfed Yelwata community in Benue State following a fresh gunmen attack in the early hours of Monday, leaving several people dead.
Eyewitnesses said the incident triggered a protest by local women, who marched through the streets demanding the withdrawal of soldiers stationed in the area.
The protesters also called for immediate relocation to Makurdi, citing a lack of safety in the community.
“They should take us to Makurdi because the government cannot protect us,” one of the demonstrators told reporters.
Monday’s assault comes less than two months after suspected herders attacked Yelwata on June 13, killing an estimated 200 people including internally displaced persons — with many victims burned alive in a night of violence.
