Envoy Sets Agenda to Boost Nigeria-Israel Trade Ties

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 21, 2026
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo
Nigeria’s Ambassador to Israel, Amb. Nkechi  Ufochukwu, has said efforts are underway to deepen the trade agreement between Nigeria and Israel as part of a broader plan to boost bilateral relations and economic cooperation.
Speaking over the weekend in Abuja at the maiden edition of the Nigeria-Israel Business Forum (NIBF) the envoy said strengthening trade ties between both countries remains a top priority of her diplomatic agenda.
“My main point and plan is to strengthen the trade agreement between the two countries, to strengthen bilateral trade agreement between the two countries,” she said.

Ufochukwu noted that beyond trade, her focus would include promoting Nigeria’s culture, agriculture, and investments, as well as facilitating training in cybersecurity and information technology.
She assured stakeholders of her commitment to delivering on her mandate and working collaboratively with partners to achieve results.
“I will put in my best in what is required of me to do the work which has been given to me, let us keep communication open and get the work done.”she said
Stakeholders at the forum stressed the need for Nigeria to address structural challenges hindering business growth, drawing comparisons with Israel’s innovation-driven economy.
A member of the forum, Pastor Henry Opara, emphasised the need for formal bilateral agreements, noting that existing engagements are largely informal and driven by individual relationships.
“What we have now is more of person-to-person business relationships, which is not ideal. With proper bilateral agreements, it becomes government-to-government engagement guided by laid-down rules,” he said.
Opara added that although some Nigerian businesses already partner with Israeli firms in areas such as security and technology, formalising these relationships would yield greater benefits.
Also speaking, a member of the forum Mr. Oseagha Solomon described Israel as a country that enables growth through clear regulations, reliable power supply, and strong institutional trust, while noting that Nigeria’s environment, though high in potential, is weighed down by operational challenges.
“Nigeria is a high-potential but high-friction environment. Entrepreneurs battle unstable power, policy inconsistencies, foreign exchange volatility, and costly financing,” he said.

Oseagha urged policymakers to prioritise innovation, invest in research and development, and ensure policy consistency, including stable foreign exchange and enforcement of regulations.
Osuji highlighted key Israeli exhibitions such as Agritech and Israel Food, noting Nigeria’s successful debut pavilion led by former Agriculture Minister Akinwumi Adesina, which attracted international business deals.
She pointed to additional opportunities in security and cyber technology conferences, urging Nigeria to actively participate for knowledge transfer and innovation.
National Cordinator
Osuji also called for sustained support for NIBF, stressing that the body currently lacks a functional office and secretariat despite its strategic role in Nigeria-Israel relations.
She recounted securing a medical training agreement with an Israeli hospital for Nigerian doctors, but lamented lack of follow-through from Nigeria’s Ministry of Health.
Osuji concluded with an appeal for practical implementation of bilateral agreements, stressing that NIBF remains ready to facilitate trade, training and cooperation initiatives.

• JUST IN: Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in today’s massive US and Israeli strikes on Iran, according to Israeli sources. The news comes shortly after Iran claimed its leaders were “safe and sound.”

• About the attack: US President Donald Trump has indicated the ongoing military operation is aimed overturning Tehran’s government. More than 200 people have been killed in Iran, according to state media.

• Unprecedented retaliation: Iran unleashed strikes on US military bases, Israel and other targets across the Middle East, rocking densely populated areas and disrupting air travel and oil shipments.

Honorable Wole Oke and the Israeli Lobby: A Question of Loyalty and National Interest

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 9, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

“Loyalty to foreign lobbies is treachery to national interest”

In an era when foreign influence has become the new frontier of modern geopolitics, Nigeria must guard its sovereignty with vigilance.

The quiet infiltration of foreign lobbying and disinformation networks has reached alarming levels globally, and Israel has emerged as one of the most aggressive players in this new information battleground.

Recent reports and observations of Honourable Wole Oke, Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, engaging closely with Israeli diplomats, therefore raise troubling questions about where national loyalty begins and where foreign agendas intrude.

Israel’s strategic communications networks have long extended beyond conventional diplomacy. Across Europe, the United States, and Africa, Tel Aviv has invested heavily in influence operations, funding think tanks, online campaigns, and political proxies to push narratives that align with its foreign policy objectives.

From normalization efforts in the Middle East to countering pro-Palestinian solidarity in Africa, Israel has sought to shape political attitudes through selective partnerships, soft diplomacy, and targeted elite engagement.

In this context, any Nigerian public official cultivating unusually close ties with Israeli diplomats must be viewed through the lens of strategic caution.

Nigeria’s foreign policy anchored historically on justice, non-alignment, and African solidarity stands at odds with Israel’s aggressive lobbying strategies, particularly as Gaza continues to bleed and international consensus calls for restraint and accountability.

Hon. Wole Oke’s recent interactions with Israeli officials led my Amb Michael Freeman have not gone unnoticed within diplomatic circles.

While parliamentary diplomacy is legitimate, the perception of alignment with a foreign agenda especially one that conflicts with Nigeria’s official positions at the United Nations and the African Union is deeply problematic.

Nigeria’s position on Palestine has remained consistent since independence: a call for a two-state solution, human rights, and international law.

To be seen “hobnobbing” with Israeli envoys at a time when the world condemns Tel Aviv’s actions risks undermining the integrity of Nigeria’s diplomatic voice and emboldening those who seek to divide African consensus on issues of justice and peace.

Nigeria’s leadership in Africa has always been grounded in principled foreign policy, not transactional alliances. The nation has stood with oppressed peoples from South Africa under apartheid to Palestine under occupation guided by moral consistency rather than short-term gain.

For a senior legislator to lend legitimacy to a foreign power currently accused of human rights violations and information manipulation campaigns is not only tone-deaf; it is contrary to Nigeria’s moral and diplomatic heritage.

We’re fully ready for war– Iran to Israel

by Folarin Kehinde October 2, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Iran has said that it was fully ready for whatever Israel may come up with.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, gave the order to launch missiles against Israel.

Daily post reported that Iran launched over 180 ballistic missiles into Israel early Tuesday.

The Israeli military said it has received no reports of injuries from the Iranian missile attack.

The Israeli military spokesperson, Rear Adm Daniel Hagari, said the country’s air defenses intercepted many of the incoming missiles, though some landed in central and southern Israel.

However, a senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran “is fully ready for any retaliation”.

Meanwhile, the Iranian mission to the United Nations has defended the country’s missile launches against Israel, calling it a response to “terrorist acts” by Israel.

Over 100 premature babies risk death as Israel cuts fuel supply to Gaza

by Folarin Kehinde October 23, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The United Nations children agency, UNICEF, has warned that about 120 newborn premature babies on incubators in war-torn Gaza’s hospitals are at risk of death as fuel runs out in the war ravaged zone.

Leading reporters gathered that over 1,750 children have already been killed by Israeli strikes launched against the Gaza Strip in retaliation for the October 7 Hamas attacks, according to the Palestinian territory’s health ministry.

Currently, hospitals face a dire lack of medicines, fuel and water not only for the thousands wounded in more than two weeks of the war between Gaza militants and Israel but also for routine patients.

“We have currently 120 neonates who are in incubators, out of which we have 70 neonates with mechanical ventilation, and of course this is where we are extremely concerned,” said UNICEF spokesman Jonathan Crickx on Sunday.

Power is one of the main worries for the seven specialist wards across Gaza treating premature babies to help with breathing and provide critical support, for example when their organs are not developed enough.

Israel ordered a complete blockade of the territory after the Hamas attacks, in which the Islamist group killed 1,400 people, mostly civilians, according to Israeli officials.

Amid widespread electricity cuts, the World Health Organization warned on Thursday that hospitals had already run out of fuel for generators.

The WHO said that about 1,000 people needing dialysis will also be at risk if the generators stop.

Twenty aid trucks crossed from Egypt into Gaza on Saturday but there was no fuel in the consignment.

Israel fears that fuel could help Hamas, although the limited supplies still in Gaza were being diverted to keep the generators for medical equipment running.

“If they (babies) are put in mechanical ventilation incubators, by definition, if you cut the electricity, we are worried about their lives,” the UNICEF spokesman told AFP.

Gaza’s health ministry said on Saturday that 130 premature babies were in danger of dying due to the lack of fuel.

War in Israel: Hamas surprise attack out of Gaza stuns Israel and leaves over 250 dead in fighting, retaliation

by Leading Reporters October 8, 2023
written by Leading Reporters

Backed by a barrage of rockets, Hamas militants stormed from the blockaded Gaza Strip into nearby Israeli towns, killing dozens and abducting others in an unprecedented surprise attack during a major Jewish holiday Saturday. A stunned Israel launched airstrikes in Gaza, with its prime minister saying the country is now at war with Hamas and vowing to inflict an “unprecedented price.”

In an assault of startling breadth, Hamas gunmen rolled into as many as 22 locations outside the Gaza Strip, including towns and other communities as far as 15 miles (24 kilometers) from the Gaza border. In some places they gunned down civilians and soldiers as Israel’s military scrambled to muster a response.

Gunbattles continued well after nightfall, and militants held hostages in standoffs in two towns. Militants occupied a police station in a third town, where Israeli forces struggled until Sunday morning to finally reclaim the building.

Before daybreak Sunday, militants fired more rockets from Gaza, hitting a hospital in the Israeli coastal town of Ashkelon. The hospital sustained damage, said senior hospital official Tal Bergman. Video provided by Barzilai Medical Center showed a large hole punched into a wall and chunks of debris scattered on the ground of what appeared to an empty rooms and a hallway. There was no report of casualties.

Israeli media, citing rescue service officials, said at least 250 people were killed and 1,500 wounded in Saturday’s attack, making it the deadliest in Israel in decades. At least 232 people in the Gaza Strip were killed and 1,700 wounded in Israeli strikes, the Palestinian Health Ministry said. Hamas fighters took an unknown number of civilians and soldiers captive into Gaza.

The conflict threatened to escalate with Israel’s vows of retaliation. Previous conflicts between Israel and Gaza’s Hamas rulers brought widespread death and destruction in Gaza and days of rocket fire on Israeli towns. The situation is potentially more volatile now, with Israel’s far-right government stung by the security breach and with Palestinians in despair over a never-ending occupation in the West Bank and suffocating blockade of Gaza.
