Okpihwo to Nigerians: Register, Vote to Stop Election Rigging

by Folarin Kehinde August 5, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Ahead of the 2026 Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Elections, the councillorship candidate, AMAC Wuse ward under the Labour Party, Hon. Ejiro Okpihwo has urged Nigerians to register, collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), and actively participate in the voting process to prevent electoral malpractice.

Okpihwo while speaking in Abuja on Tuesday at the 10th Much Emerging Leaders Summit and Uncommon Mentorship Awards noted that rigging of election is dominant in places where there are low turnout of voters but advised Nigerians to key into the new Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) move to ensure continuous registration process.

“Talking about these people leading us now, once the people are not there, they will rig the election because people are not there to monitor the election and also follow the election to returning officers.

“That’s where the problem is, normally they rig places that they see that the turnout was small or was not good. So that’s what they do. So I’m urging Nigerians to please come out and do their voters card now and make it a point of duty to be out to vote before the election for 2027.”. he added.

Meanwhile, Okpihwo a recipient of the award for the girl-child at the event expressed his admiration for youth-focused initiatives, noting their power to inspire and drive change.

He described how deeply moved he was by the confidence and eloquence displayed by young participants, particularly a young girl who emerged as the president of her group.

“I feel great to witness such innovative activities. This event truly motivated me,” he said. “It’s encouraging to see young people, especially girls, being empowered and taking bold steps toward leadership.”

Okpihwo revealed that he personally voted for the young girl due to her impressive performance, contrasting her courage and articulation with the perceived inaction of some lawmakers.

“If a young child can speak with such passion and clarity, what then are our leaders in the National Assembly doing? Many of them sleep on duty and fail to raise motions that benefit their constituencies. It doesn’t make sense,” he added.

Reflecting on his own political journey, Okpihwo shared that he has been addressed as “Honorable” since 2013 when he first contested for office. “I give God the glory because the name is becoming a reality now,” he said.

He concluded by emphasizing the importance of identity and belief, noting that the titles and recognition given to young people today can shape their future.

“That girl may not become president tomorrow, but she could become the wife of a president. Names carry favor and can define destinies,” he said.

On Thursday, the administration announced the suspension of the inauguration, citing the ruling of an FCT High Court.

FCT polls: INEC omits APC candidate’s name for AMAC missing

by Leading Reporters February 12, 2022
written by Leading Reporters

The All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmanship candidate’s name for the Abuja Municipal Area Council election is missing on the list of names displayed by the INEC.

However, that of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairmanship, and councillorship candidates of all other political parties were conspicuously reflected.

The missing name may not be unconnected with the legal fireworks between Alhaji Murtala Kashi and Alhaji Hassan Gwagwa.

Until last Thursday when the Supreme Court ruled in favour of Alhaji Murtala Kashi as the authentic Abuja Municipal Area Council Chairmanship candidate, Alhaji Hassan Suleiman Gwagwa has been posing as the candidate after the APC primary election that ended in confusion last year.

DAILY POST reports that accreditation of voters within the few polling units visited started at about 10.00 a.m.

There was also no sign of life threatening situation as voters are conducting themselves in orderly manner, while security operatives seem to be on a red alert around polling units and other strategic locations in Gwagwa, Karmo and Idu.

Meanwhile, the Presiding Officer in charge of Gwagwa Karmo, Mrs Agwu Agnes revealed that a total of 2,401 ballot papers were provided by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the Chairmanship and Councillorship election for Gwagwa Jiwa ward.

FCT Poll: Confusion As Two Candidates Lay Claim to AMAC APC Ticket

by Folarin Kehinde February 8, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

There is confusion in the ruling All Progressives Congress in the Federal Capital Territory as two candidates claim the chairmanship ticket of the party in the Abuja Municipal Area Council.

Two candidates, Sulaimon Gwagwa and Muritala Karshi have been campaigning at the different parts of FCT.

The two candidates had on many occasions claimed to be the candidate of the party.

According to reports, Gwagwa won the primary election with 109 votes while his closest challenger, Karshi scored 103 votes.

It was gathered that Karshi challenged the matter in court and won. Gwagwa appealed at the Appeal Court, the court ruled in his favour. Karshi, however, approached the Supreme Court.

However, revealed that Karshi’s name was on the Independent National Electoral Commission list.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the APC in FCT, Abdulmalik Usman, said there was little the party could do as the matter was at the Supreme Court.

He added that the party gave them the nod to go about their campaigns.

Usman said, “When you have a party that is strong you would see people struggling to be its candidate. There is little we can do because the issue is before the supreme court, we hope the apex court gives its ruling and declares one of them the owner of the ticket.

“But what we are doing as a party is to allow the two of them to campaign. It is the logo of the party that appears on the ballot paper and not the candidates’ names. Whoever gets the ticket in court would be our candidate for the election.”

When asked if the situation would not affect the chances of the party at the poll, he said, “It would not. The PDP candidate cannot withstand any of the two candidates. Besides, we are on the ground in the area council.

“Also, none of them has asked their supporters not to vote for APC. This is not happening for the first time. In 2007, we had two National Assembly candidates, the APC won and one of them got the mandate.

“No one should worry about what is happening. The two should carry on with their campaigns and work for the victory of the party in the area council.”

FCT Residents to AEDC: We can’t keep paying for Darkness, Lacking other Amenities

by Leading Reporters June 21, 2021
written by Leading Reporters

Residents of Gbaukuchi and Gubausabo communities in Kuje Area Council say the lack of electricity and water supply in their communities was slowing down development.

Some of the residents who spoke with the journalists said the community had been without electricity for years.

Gbaukuchi and Gubausabo are communities along airport roads with street lights just at the entrance of the community but no power supply within.

Helen Samuel, a resident of Gbaukuchi said there had never been any form of social amenity in the community since she had been residing there for over 15 years.

She regretted that politicians would always go to the community for campaigns and promise better days for the residents but never fulfilled any of the promises.

“During election, candidates of political parties will always promise to provide us basic amenities, when we vote for them to win, they will never come back.

“We do not have health facilities, no clinic, chemist, not to mention a hospital or secondary school in our community.

“The road is inaccessible owing to no bridge; during rainy season the river rises, which makes access to nearby communities difficult, resulting in loss of lives in the process.

“The inability to construct the bridge has also prevented small investors from doing business in our community, thereby making us suffer unduly.

“Construction of a bridge is needed urgently, as well as hospital, junior and senior secondary schools, to avoid children crossing the river to attend schools in nearby Ketti community.

Another resident, Mrs. Laraba Yakubu, said although a primary health care centre was provided in 2016, after years of agitation, “they are not maintaining it and no doctor to attend to patients”.

“Our people are dying of waist pain, chest pain and eye issues; we need medical personnel in our community, to help reduce death of residents.

“We carry sick people to Ketti General Hospital when the condition is critical, hence the need for a hospital, to ensure the safety of pregnant women, nursing mothers and babies in Gbaukuchi,” Yakubu said.

“I gave birth to my children at home because I cannot afford hospital fees, says Mrs. Grace Alex, a resident of Gubuasabo.

According to Alex, Gubausabo is a small community that lacks everything, not even a market for petty trading.

”If the Kuje Area Council can establish a market for residents of the community it will help people engage in trading and ease poverty and suffering.

In the same vein,  residents of Gishiri and Kasablanca communities of Nicon area of Abuja, also solicited government’s intervention in the provision of a health centre.

Some of the residents also called for the provision of mosquito nets and proper knowledge of its usage.

Hajiya Medina, a resident of Gishiri, said she bought mosquito net from the market, adding that her family had formed the habit of using it at all times.

”My experience has been wonderful because it protects my family against mosquitoes.

”My family members hardly fall sick because we use it every night and it has helped me to save money from not buying malaria drugs and hospital expenses.

”Some people in my community don’t have knowledge of how the mosquito networks, that is why I think we need sensitization.

”We also need a health center that can provide us with mosquito nets and health education,” she added.

”Most people, who live here are poor and can’t afford money to buy mosquito nets, especially the pregnant women and they also need enlightenment on proper usage,”  Isah Gishiri another resident said.

According to Gishiri, I have one which i have been using for years, i cannot afford another one now, that is why we solicit assistance.

”I am sure mine would have expired that is why it is not as effective as before.

Abuja councils polls: APC group backs Yamawo for Chairmanship

by Leading Reporters April 26, 2021
written by Leading Reporters

Ahead of the 2022 Abuja Area Councils election, a forum of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) support group has called on leadership and members of the party in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) to support Tanko Yamawo to fly its Chairmanship ticket.

Addressing a press conference at the National Secretariat of APC in Abuja Muazu Labo, who led the group said AMAC deserves the leadership of Yamawo who has remained loyal to the party despite contesting for the chairmanship position and lost on three different occasions.

Labo, who described Yamawo as a grassroot politician who has maintained close contact with his people including women and youths, expressed confidence that the politician will do a great job for AMAC and to the party.

“We know Yamawo is very good and loyal member of the party. He has been contesting for this position and lost on three different occasions, coming either second or third. Yet he didn’t leave the party for not winning the ticket. Rather he continued to support the party to ensure it won the last local council election. And today, he has come out again.

“We want the party leadership to recognize someone who has been a loyal party member who has been in the party from inception helping the party to win election in his terrain.

“He’s not like others who contest and when they lost, they go to another party but he has stood by the party. He has the party in his heart.

Speaking on the capability of the aspirant, Labo maintained that Yamawo with his vast knowledge and experience and the team of seasoned civil servants he will work with at the local government, will take AMAC to the next level.
