Mixed Reaction Trails Rumored Sack of CBN Governor, Emefiele

by Folarin Kehinde May 26, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Mixed Reactions has continued to trail the widely circulated media report of the rumoured sack of the Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele on Wednesday.

The Apex Bank, Central Bank of Nigeria denied the sack of its Governor describing the report as an unfounded rumour.

It was rumoured on Wednesday morning that Emefiele had been sacked by Nigeria’s President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), purportedly for his presidential ambition.

The PUNCH had earlier sought clarification from the CBN’s spokesman, Mr Osita Nwanisiobi, but got no response from him.

However, several papers are quoting Nwanisiobi as denying the trending report, saying, “I heard it just the way you got it too. As far as I am concerned, it’s a rumour. I’m not aware of any sack.”

It would be recalled that Emefiele had on May 9 Emefiele headed to a Federal High Court in Abuja to seek a constitutional interpretation on his non-resignation while pursuing his presidential interests.

It was also revealed that Emefiele is a member of All Progressives Congress in Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State.

Meanwhile, Chairman of Ward 6 in the Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, Mr Nduka Erikpume, , had said the CBN governor had registered as an APC member.

When asked whether Emefiele had registered in the APC, Erikpume said, “Yes, he has registered since February 2021. He is our member.”

Condemnations have trailed Emefiele’s involvement in politics, with experts saying it could jeopardise the integrity of the country’s financial system.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Kunle Adegoke, in a telephone call with The PUNCH, had said the CBN governor should resign his appointment and become a politician if he intended to contest in the 2023 general elections.

He said, “The governor of the central bank is expected to be impartial and not be driven by his own personal interests or the interests of a political party. Emefiele, as the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, represents all Nigerians and in that capacity, he is obliged under the constitution to serve each person irrespective of their political party or affiliation.

“The honourable thing for him to do is to resign if he is the one behind all these calls for him to come and contest. Where he is not the one, he ought to have come out earlier than now because we could see on social media, the branded vehicles and then the claim that farmers have spent N100m to buy him a nomination form of the All Progressives Congress. That is questionable.

“The few farmers who are debtors under the Anchors Borrowers’ Programme cannot now be deploying their resources towards this.”

A former Assistant Director at the CBN, Prof Jonathan Aremu, had also said any political participation by the CBN governor could compromise the integrity of the central bank.

Aremu said, “I am not going to quote the specifics of the CBN Act, but I will give you an objective view of this. Because of the special importance of the central bank, I don’t think it is right for the CBN governor to be political. It is important to have a monetary policy that is relatively seen to be objective because governments come and go.

“If you want to go into politics, for the relative independence of the CBN, then you have to leave the position. When people lose confidence in issues of money, it tends to be a serious issue. In some countries, central bank governors disagree with presidents and resign.”

Some lawyers, however, have argued that the CBN Act provides that Emefiele can only be removed with a two-thirds majority of the Senate.

A precedent was, nevertheless, set with the indefinite suspension of a former CBN Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Peter Obi Dumps PDP, State Reasons

by Folarin Kehinde May 26, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has explained that “recent developments” within the Peoples Democratic Party were responsible for his resignation from the opposition party and withdrawal from its presidential primary slated for end of May.

Obi was one of the 15 PDP presidential aspirants cleared by the Senator David Mark-led Presidential Screening Committee last month.

However, the ex-governor, in a statement addressed to the PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, explained that the recent developments won’t make it possible for him to make “constructive contributions”.

The letter was titled, ‘Resignation From Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Withdrawal from the Presidential Contest’.

Obi said, “I am writing to intimate you of my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party, which was conveyed to the Chairman of Agulu Ward 2. Anaocha LGA Anambra, effective Friday 20 May, 2022. Consequently, I am by this letter informing you of my withdrawal for the PDP Presidential Primaries.

“It has been a great honour to contribute to nation-building efforts through our party. Unfortunately, recent developments within our party make it practically impossible to continue participating and making such constructive contributions.

“Our national challenges are deep-seated and require that we each make profound sacrifices towards rescuing our country. My commitment to rescuing Nigeria remains firm, even if the route differs.

“I wish to thank you personally for your graciousness and leadership. I wish you well and best of luck in the service of the country.”

Some groups had bought the N40m PDP presidential nomination form for Obi last month.

PDP presidential aspirants include former Vice President, Abubakar Atiku; two former Senate Presidents, Bukola Saraki and Anyim Pius Anyim; Governors Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto); Nyesom Wike (Rivers); Bala Mohammed (Bauchi); Emmanuel Udom (Akwa Ibom); businessman, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen; former governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose; Sam Ohunabunwa, and Dele Momodu.

The party had thrown its presidential ticket open of late attracting rebuke from socio-cultural organisations like the Ohanaeze Ndigbo which maintained that political parties like the PDP and the All Progressives Congress should zone its ticket to the South-East geopolitical zone.

by Folarin Kehinde May 25, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Muhammadu Buhari, has bagged the Global Integrity and Anti-Corruption Award of Excellence.

This is to recognize his lifetime outstanding commitment to the fight against corruption and selfless service with exceptional integrity.

Buhari has been honoured with the Chartered Institute of Forensics and Certified Fraud Examiners of Nigeria (CIFCFEN) GLOBAL INTEGRITY AND ANTI CORRUPTION AWARD OF EXCELLENCE.

A statement signed by Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President, Media & Publicity stated that the President was presented with the Award on Tuesday in Abuja by the Chairman Governing Council CIFCFEN Board of Trustees, Dr Iliyasu Gashinbaki.

The award is the highest honour of the Institute reserved for only African Heads of States with impeccable character and unimpeachable ideals.

The Nigerian leader is the first African leader to be bestowed with the award. Receiving the award, President Buhari thanked the Institute for the honour, saying:

This recognition further imbues in me hope that we will as individuals and citizens of this country begin to live right and imbibe the ideals and ethos of the founding fathers of this great nation.”

The President pledged ”to look into and assent accordingly” a bill seeking the formal establishment of CIFCFEN, acknowledging that the Bill is presently before him.

He commended the Institute for working and effectively complementing the efforts of law enforcement agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) and the Police.

He directed the anti-corruption agencies to continue partnering with the Institute for the benefit of the country.

Furthermore, the President directed the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning to work with the Institute in areas of providing technical assistance and capacity building to all revenue generating agencies and regulators in the public sector.

The President lauded the Board of Trustees for issuing the first independent review of graft fighting strategy of the country, adding that he is pleased to receive copies of the latest flagship publication, the Annual (2021) CIFCFEN Country Report, themed around the review of the Country’s National Anti-Corruption Strategy 2017-2021.

”This is the first independent review of graft fighting strategy and I commend the Institute for this initiative.”

Justifying the importance of forensics and fraud examination in the fight against corruption, President Buhari said:

”The need for forensic experts arises in educating, preventing, detecting and prosecuting fraudsters, while fraud examination helps mitigate vices like embezzlement, money laundering, misuse and mismanagement of public resources.

”Many Nigerians, who are serious about eliminating corruption in our country, will welcome this review of the National Anti-Corruption Strategy midwifed by the Federal Ministry of Justice and the Presidential Advisory Committee on Anti-Corruption in 2017 and supported by our International friends.

”This has been our flagship effort in fighting corruption and we did this by distilling all previous strategies geared towards fighting corruption into a single strategy, while this review comes with recommendations that will be carefully reviewed by the Office of the Attorney General and adopted in our 2nd National Anti-Corruption Strategy that will be unveiled shortly.

”This effort by the Institute to undertake the review of the national anti-corruption strategy is highly commendable and it has shown the usefulness of partnerships with professional bodies and my administration will continue to partner with the Institute and as well as other private institutions, the academia and other stakeholders in the fight to stop sleaze and mitigate corruption.”

EFCC Blocking Me from Presidential Screening, Okorocha Raises Alarm

by Folarin Kehinde May 24, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Former Governor of Imo State and Presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rochas Okorocha, has raised the alarm that he’s currently under siege.

Okorocha, who spoke to journalists at his Maitama residence in Abuja, called on the stakeholders in the country to prevail on the operatives of EFCC to vacate his residence.

The politician wondered why his house would be invaded on the screening day of all the Presidential aspirants of APC, saying he never received any invitation or got court summons from any quarters.

,”Frankly speaking, the situation I find myself is a situation of what I call hostage. Policemen and EFCC operatives are currently in my compound and they want to possibly whisk me away… my gate is blocked.

“All I am asking for now is to allow me to go for my screening because I am a Presidential aspirant and our election comes up on Sunday. If I am not allowed to go for this screening, I might miss it”.

”I am not an unknown person in the country. I have an address and people know me in the country. All what it takes for the EFCC is to send me an invitation and I will gladly oblige,” the lawmaker said.

Investigate N1.5 trn Fraud Against me, NIMASA Boss, Jamoh, writes EFCC

by Folarin Kehinde May 24, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Bashir Jamoh, has written to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate an allegation of N1.5tn fraud levelled against him.

One Ude Jackson, in a tweet on Saturday, had traced N1.5tn fraud to Jamoh.

He wrote: “Fraud in Buhari govt as N1.5tn, $9bn traced to NIMASA boss, Bashir Jamoh’s personal accounts.

“Bashir Jamoh, DG of NIMASA has told his friends he doesn’t know anything about N1.5tn in any account. And that all the story is a lie and fake news. When I wake up, I will drop his receipt. He just ate the bait”, he added.

Bashir Jamoh, however, in a letter referenced NIMASA2020/DG/EFCC/VOL1/09, asked the EFCC to thoroughly investigate the allegation in order to put the record in the public space.

“I write to bring to your attention the attached online publications and tweets that have gone viral since Friday 21 of May 2021.

“The publications emanated from a series of tweets of one Jackson Ude alleging the sums of N1.5tn and another US$9,557,312.50 were traced to my personal account.

The allegation of money laundering which impugns my integrity, character and family name has been circulating on social media also suggested that the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria be invited by security agencies to give reasons why such huge sums of money were transferred to my personal account instead of the Treasury Single Account.

“In view of this weighty allegation and the insidious and perniciously damaging effect on the government and the country, I hereby request that a thorough and painstaking investigation be carried by your commission with a view to unravelling the truth or accuracy of the allegation.”

NCDC to Nigerians: Protect Yourselves, No treatment for Monkeypox

by Folarin Kehinde May 24, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has said there are no specific treatments available for the monkeypox infection.

The centre also urged Nigerians to take certain measures to prevent contracting the disease.

This is just as the Minister of State for Health, Dr Olorunnimbe Mamora, allayed the fears of Nigerians, saying the NCDC is doing everything possible to mitigate the spread of the disease.

The PUNCH reports that monkeypox, a rare disease that is caused by infection with the monkeypox virus, belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus in the family Poxviridae.

The disease, which according to the World Health Organisation, is endemic to West and Central African countries, has surfaced in some European countries.

While the NCDC noted that 15 out of the 46 suspected cases reported had been confirmed, countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Portugal, Spain, Israel, Lebanon and Canada among others have started to report cases.

The WHO in a statement it released last week noted that the outbreak of the monkeypox disease is being discovered in countries where it is not endemic.

But the NCDC’s post on its website, which was obtained by The PUNCH on Monday, noted that there are no specific treatments available for monkeypox.

The message read, “There are no specific treatments available for monkeypox infection, although various novel antiviral have in-vitro and animal data supportive effects such as Brincindofocir and Tecovirimat.

“Measures that can be taken to prevent infection with monkeypox virus include: avoiding contact with animals that could harbour the virus, both sick or dead animals in areas where monkeypox cases have occurred; avoiding contact with any material that has been in contact with a sick animal;

“Thoroughly cooking any animal that might have come into contact with an infected animal; handling them with standard precautions and observing monkeypox symptoms for 30 days and washing with soap and water after contact with infected animals.”

Can unclean environment produce clean president?

by Leading Reporters May 22, 2022
written by Leading Reporters

By Tonnie Iredia

Several political aspirants seeking to become Nigeria’s president in 2023, along with many other citizens hold the view that all the country needs now is good leadership.

The strength of the argument is that a good leader with great visionary capacity is best positioned to show the nation, by personal example, the appropriate direction to sustainable development.

The limitation to the theory however, is that leadership is not an independent variable; it does not function on its own. It is instead subject to other variables such as followership, situations and circumstances. The contention is that good leadership is more likely to flourish with good followership.

Personal virtues alone may not be enough. As one analyst aptly put it the other day, the Pope cannot successfully lead a congregation of thieves. That is why it is said that a society deserves the leadership it gets.

Nigerian politicians should therefore tune down their claims of having a monopoly of the required capacity to lead Nigeria aright because an unclean environment can distort the acclaimed capacity of a clean leader.

They should talk less of their so-called qualifications and experiences and emphasize how they intend to use such credentials to overcome the myriad of factors which make their country unclean.

It was for this reason that this column last week, called for strong societal institutions and not just strong leaders. On account of the nature of the Nigerian society, many political leaders often generate several eloquent narratives supposedly for nation building when in reality they have very little motivation to go beyond the subsisting penchant for greed and nepotism that can only serve the self and its acquaintances.

When properly condensed, that inclination is common to many presidential aspirants. Otherwise, how come our expected Messiahs are always general and peripheral but hardly specific about the issues of the moment that are calling for action?

For over a decade, the issue of insecurity has hit the country hard making it perhaps the foremost item presidential aspirants should focus upon. Last week, insecurity in the form of mob action recurred on a large scale in at least 3 locations – Sokoto, Lagos and Abuja.

Those who had to deal with the trend were as expected Governors Tambuwal and Sanwo-Olu of Sokoto and Lagos respectively as well as Mohammed Bello, Minister of the Federal capital territory.

The best story teller would have very little to say about the reactions of our presidential aspirants. While an insignificant few made some tangential references to the subject, many went mute. Instructively, it was an opportunity for aspirants to leave in the hearts of compatriots, their commitment to an end to insecurity.

If the number one Muslim in the country, his eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto was able to condemn mob action on religious issues, political aspirants should have at least issued soothing statements to calm frayed nerves.

It would appear that having failed to say anything about the Sokoto episode, it became difficult to react to the bizarre killings by Okada riders in Lagos and Dei-Dei in Abuja which occurred sequentially at about the same time.

As a result, many aspirants missed the opportunity to transit to agents of national unity. Yet, they are suggesting daily that because the nation has never been this divided, one of their immediate objectives is to unify the country.

One can only hope that Nigeria is not headed to worse days if those whose mission is to unify the country fail to find their voice at the appropriate junction. Indeed, bearing in mind that some of the aspirants have accused the present administration of insufficient capacity to unify the country, how are we sure that the nation’s post 2023 era is likely to be better?

One thing that is certain is that events leading to 2023 are not in any way cleaner than those of previous general elections. First, there is saturated attention of stakeholders to the presidential election; its aspirants who are in search of becoming the flagbearers of their political parties are all over Nigeria overshadowing every other thing.

If such aspirants are everywhere visiting different opinion leaders especially traditional rulers while looking for the party ticket, what they would do when they become candidates for the election proper would be unimaginable.

Meanwhile, the presence of over 40 presidential aspirants who have for the same reason appeared now and again in Ekiti and Osun states whose governorship elections are a few weeks away has become confusing.

In addition, the environment in those states have been quite volatile. In Ekiti State for example, one of the leading governorship candidates, Segun Oni of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and his running mate have more than once cried out for help over assassination attempts allegedly by state actors.

At the same time, campaigns for party primaries have taken over governance throughout the country. Unfortunately, the preoccupation has been how to play one aspirant against the other. Reports of the old culture of conducting delegates elections while hoarding the official result-sheets have resurfaced.

The party officials are themselves unable to prepare their members for a clean contest as they have both eyes on what other parties are doing. This has resulted in hurried packaging of the requirements in the electoral act. In the circumstance, all political parties are on the same page, making passionate appeals to the electoral body to review the already published timetable to provide more room for concluding party arrangements which diligent handling could have dispensed with before now.

INEC deserves commendation for rejecting the request which could open the door for more demands to the detriment of credible elections. At the last count, the list of delegates of the parties have remained uncertain especially as last minute amendments made to the electoral act so close to the contests are still awaiting presidential assent.

The above scenario represents the unclean environment to which political parties are hoping to deliver clean office-holders. For such dirty environment not to overwhelm future leaders, we dare say so much has to be done.

First, Nigerian politicians need to learn to contribute to the progress of the nation irrespective of whatever party they belong to. Although it is not only presidential aspirants that should make such contributions, they happen to be the focus of this piece. Consequently, it would have been exciting if any of them had rescheduled his campaign train and returned to Kaduna to make substantive statements on insecurity and support Governor Nasir El Rufai who has of recent had several security challenges.

Apart from another attack a few days ago on the Abuja-Kaduna road, the governor has raised an alarm that insurgents had begun incursion into his state. Considering that where, when and how a statement is made can be strategic, any aspirant who seized such opportunity would have involuntarily but markedly projected himself as one who would not give insecurity a chance anywhere in the country if elected our next president.

The point to be made is that although Nigeria has many competent presidential aspirants, they need to know that it’s not everything they are harping on right now that Nigerians are anxious to hear.

I know for certain that many people would easily buy the idea that our next president must be ready to move the nation away from consumption to production. Nigerians must eat what they grow and grow what they eat. Such a campaign message is attractive as an obvious solution to a major challenge of the nation.

It is hoped that the media would assist the nation to place emphasis on such messages. It is also necessary to correct wrong narratives, a good example being the credit taken away from former Minister Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba. Whereas Nwajiuba unlike his colleagues resigned before the Presidential ultimatum to do so, Nigerians were erroneously made to believe that he was one of those directed to resign. Placing this story in the correct perspective would put on record that there are still some Nigerians who are honourable enough to quit when it is due.

Wike fears Makinde may not deliver SW for him; threatens to stop plunging more funds

by Leading Reporters May 22, 2022
written by Leading Reporters

A close ally of Governor Nyesom Wike who doesn’t want his name in print has described the Executive Governor of Rivers State as a sailor who’s currently sailing the rough waters of politics without a compass as threats of betrayal hits his camp. The source said that Governor Wike is worried that his South West ally and colleague, Governor Seyi Makinde, the Oyo State Governor is delivering little when compared with the huge resources and money the Presidential hopeful has staked to curry the votes of South West PDP delegates.

The source said that Governor Wike has so much invested in South West political project that he was not expecting anything less than the total votes of the delegates, but the reality on ground is a far cry from what is envisaged.

Invariably, the source hinted that the PDP South South strong man is shopping for Governor Makinde’ replacement, preferably a very influential person from South West to cushion the effect of the “glaring deficiencies” of Governor Makinde in getting the job done.

Wike was said to have expressed dismay over recent turn of events, especially in regions he has hitherto believed he held sway. Aside from South West, the source said Wike was apprehensive that despite funding the North Central perennially, he may received a last minute shocking betrayal from delegates, according to information availed him from a reliable source.

“You know Governor Wike hopes on massive supports of delegates from North Central and South West to become the presidential flagbearer of the People’s Democratic Party. He knows some Core Northern States are a no-go for him. Same with South East. His chances of getting full support of South South delegates are slim with Governor Godwin Obaseki in charge of Edo PDP, Okowa in Delta and Emmanuel Udom in Akwa Ibom. Wike is leaning on the support of Donald Duke to grab Cross River delegates’ votes.

“There seems odds that money cannot mend at this point and that worries His Excellency, Governor Wike greatly. However, he keeps pushing”. The source hinted

Zodiac Signs and Attitudinal Behavior (Pt 1) SANGUINE

by Folarin Kehinde May 21, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Kenny Folarin, Abuja

Ever wondered why people behave in certain ways and are judged rationally or most times irrationally based on how they speak or relate.

Human being are social animal and most interact, communicate with man (interpersonal), communicate with themselves (intrapersonal), communicate with machine (man-machine) including other forms of communication.

Considerably, everybody is unique but the manner of interaction, mode of approach to issues has adjudged everyone different such that some people would prefer to interact with some than others, this is not far from zodiac sign.

The major zodiac signs which includes Sanguine, Choleric, Melancholic, Phlegmatic are commonly expressed people irrespective color, tribe, nationality or region.

Firstly, the Sanguine (hot and moist) refers to the air element and the signs Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius.

The Sanguine personality is curious, creative, spontaneous, impulsive, goal-oriented, optimistic, and cheerful.

A sanguine is capable of talking to new friends like they have known them for a longer time.

They are Friendly, outgoing, inspiring to others, relationship oriented, enthusiastic, warm, optimistic, ability to see the bright side of life and the good in other people. They genuinely like people, are rarely found alone, and freely interact with people.

Sanguines revel in good times and good relationships. To be a better friend to this type, invest in quality time. Make time for sanguine friends “not just as a perfunctory task,” Laraine says, “but to genuinely enjoy and appreciate their presence.”

Sanguine personality types are energetic, social and adventurous. You can motivate them by putting them in a team environment, asking them to tackle new challenges or projects, and providing them with the opportunity to present in front of their coworkers or clients.

With all this laudable attributes, the Sanguine are weak in the following ways

a) The decisions of the sanguine person are wrong in many cases, because of lack of deep knowledge and understanding, inability to foresee difficulties and potential dangers, and due to the shallow ability for relationship with people.
b) The accomplishments of the sanguine may easily fail because he always takes success for granted, and therefore does not give sufficient attention to possible obstacles, and does not make necessary backup and alternative plans.
c) Sanguine person usually has poor insight because he always caters to the external and is reluctant to enter into himself, and to give deeper thought to his own actions.
d) Sanguine person may move away from genuine friends that he considers being boring or dull. Being friends with a Sanguine is often as simple as knowing each other’s face and name. Thus, in many cases he cannot sustain deep and rich emotional friendship and romantic relationship.
