A pilgrim from Kano State, Shu’aibu Jibrin, has died in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, just 24 hours before the commencement of the 2025 Hajj rites.

The incident was confirmed by the spokesperson of the Kano State Pilgrims Welfare Board, Malam Suleiman Dederi, who said Jibrin passed away on Tuesday following a sudden illness.

A relative of the deceased, Sama’uddin Aliyu Kadawa, who is also in Makkah for the pilgrimage, confirmed the development to journalists. He explained that Jibrin was initially admitted to King Abdulazeez Hospital after falling ill and was discharged after showing signs of recovery.

“Unfortunately, his condition deteriorated again yesterday. He was rushed back to the hospital, but despite efforts by Nigerian doctors and the hospital’s medical team, he died around 2:50 a.m.,” Aliyu said.

He added that the late Jibrin was a farmer from Gargai in Bebeji Local Government Area of Kano State and had a history of ulcer and hypertension. According to Saudi medical personnel, the cause of death was cardiac arrest and heart failure.

EFCC Arraigns Two Chineese Illegal Miners for Unlawful Exportation of Minerals

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 4, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday arraigned two suspected illegal miners before Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke at the Federal High Court in Lagos.

The suspects were brought before the court by the Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 of the EFCC on a five-count charge bordering on unlawful possession and exportation of mineral resources.

One of the charges read: “That you, Zhang Hong Lin, Gao Pei Hai, and Gao Pei Yu (at large), sometime in 2025 in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court, conspired between yourselves and with intent to defraud the Federal Government of Nigeria of the revenue accruing therefrom and without the permission of the appropriate authority, engaged in the exportation of ‘Mica products, copper bearing and lithium bearing mineral resources’ out of Nigeria, and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 8 (a) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act, 1983 and punishable under Section 8 of the same Act.”

The defendants pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Following their plea, prosecution counsel Bilkisu Buhari requested a trial date and urged the court to remand the defendants in a correctional facility.

Defence counsel Jeremiah Okoro, however, asked the court to allow his clients remain in EFCC custody pending the determination of their bail application.

Justice Aneke declined the request and ordered that the defendants be remanded in a correctional centre. The case was adjourned to July 4, 2025, for trial.

The EFCC had arrested the two Chinese nationals on May 9, 2025, along with six Nigerians, over the alleged illegal mining activities in the Ogere area of Ogun State.

DSS Tasks Court to Stop Pat Utomi Shadow Government Rallies

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 4, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Department of State Services (DSS) has approached the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to stop former presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Professor Pat Utomi, from organizing rallies in relation to a pending suit over his alleged plan to establish a shadow government.

In a fresh application filed on Wednesday, the DSS, through its counsel Akinlolu Kehinde (SAN), asked the court to restrain Utomi and his associates from making public statements or staging rallies concerning the proposed shadow government.

The agency stated that intelligence reports indicate Utomi, who is currently outside the country, intends to return on June 6 to embark on roadshows and rallies under the pretext of exercising freedom of speech and association.

The DSS alleged that the planned activities are aimed at inciting public unrest in pursuit of the formation of an alternative government or cabinet.

The development is connected to an earlier suit instituted by the DSS against Utomi, challenging the legality of his purported plans. The case, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/937/2025, seeks a declaration that the move is unconstitutional and represents an attempt to usurp the powers of the current administration.

Justice James Omotosho has scheduled the matter for hearing on June 25.

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 3, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Deputy Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Abayomi Akinruntan, has resigned from his position, citing the need to align with the state’s conventional power-sharing arrangement.

Akinruntan, who represents Ilaje Constituency 1 and is the son of the Olugbo of Ugbo Kingdom, Oba Fredrick Akinruntan, conveyed his resignation in a letter read on the floor of the House by the Clerk, Benjamin Jayeiola, during plenary on Monday.

The former deputy speaker, who was absent from the sitting, was elected to the position in June 2023.

In the letter dated June 2, 2025, Akinruntan stated: “I hereby tender my resignation from the office of the Deputy Speaker effective from today, 2nd June, 2025. Recall the House was inaugurated June 2023 and I was unanimously elected as Deputy Speaker by members as stipulated in our standing order. My resignation is borne out of the need to align with the conventional arrangement in power sharing of elective positions in the state. I want to appreciate all members and staff for their contributions and support.”

Following his resignation, Ololade Gbegudu, who represents Okitipupa Constituency 2, was nominated as the new Deputy Speaker. His nomination was moved by Oluwatoyin Japheth (Akoko North East Constituency) and seconded by Chris Ayebusiwa (Okitipupa Constituency 1).

Benue LG Election Appeal Panel Upholds APC Victories in All 23 Councils

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 3, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Appeal Panel on Local Government Election Petitions for Benue State has upheld the elections of all 23 local government chairmen elected under the All Progressives Congress (APC), delivering a major legal victory for Governor Hyacinth Alia and the ruling party.

The panel, which sat at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) House in Abuja, delivered its verdict on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, reversing earlier decisions by the Local Government Election Petition Tribunals. The tribunals had nullified APC victories in nine local government areas following the October 2024 elections conducted by the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC).

The affected councils in the previous rulings included Vandeikya, Konshisha, Kwande, Ushongo, Otukpo, Agatu, Ado, Apa, and Ohimini.

In its ruling, the appellate panel dismissed all petitions filed mainly by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other opposition parties, citing lack of merit and insufficient evidence of substantial non-compliance with electoral laws.

Reacting to the development, Chairman of Agatu Local Government, Melvin Ejeh, described the judgment as a victory for justice and democracy. He called on opposition parties to set aside political differences and work with the elected leadership to deliver development and good governance at the grassroots.

NAF Airstrike Foil Planned Bandit Attack in Zamfara

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 3, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has carried out a successful air operation in Zamfara State, disrupting a planned large-scale attack by armed bandits on vulnerable communities.

According to a statement by NAF spokesperson, Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, the operation was conducted in the general area south of Mai-Galma in Maru Local Government Area. It was aimed at halting the movement of terrorists reportedly massing in preparation for an attack on nearby settlements.

Gabkwet said intelligence reports had earlier indicated that the armed group had killed several farmers and abducted civilians, including women and children.

“In response, NAF aircraft under Operation FANSAN YAMMA were deployed on an armed reconnaissance and potential rescue mission,” the statement said.

Upon arrival at the target area, over 30 motorcycles carrying armed terrorists were sighted heading into a forest. The terrorists reportedly opened fire on the aircraft, prompting a precision strike that destroyed several motorcycles and neutralised dozens of fighters.

“Ground forces were immediately mobilised to exploit the situation. They confirmed the destruction of enemy assets and the neutralisation of over 20 terrorists,” the statement added.

NAF reaffirmed its commitment to working with other security agencies to ensure the safety of citizens and the restoration of peace in the North-West region.

Wike Denies Rift with Governor Fubara, Opposes State of Emergency in Rivers

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 2, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has stated that he has no crisis with Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, contrary to widespread reports of political tension between the two.

Wike also clarified that he does not support the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Monday, the former Rivers State governor said Fubara had allowed himself to be used by political opponents seeking to fight him indirectly.

“I don’t have any crisis with him (Fubara). I’m not the President who declared a state of emergency; if Mr President had called me, I wouldn’t have agreed to the state of emergency,” Wike said.
