El-Rufai Suffers Nosebleed in Custody, Wife Denied Direct Access — Aide Raises Alarm

by Folarin Kehinde February 24, 2026
written by Folarin Kehinde

Fresh anxiety has trailed the detention of former Kaduna State governor, Nasjr El-rufai, following claims that he suffered a nosebleed while in custody and was prevented from receiving food directly from his family.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by his media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye, who said the former governor has now spent eight days in detention after honouring an invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on February 16, 2026.

According to the aide, El-Rufai was interrogated and later granted administrative bail.

However, he has remained in custody as his lawyers seek a review of the bail conditions, a situation described as unjustified and excessive.

Adekeye alleged that on February 17, one of El-Rufai’s wives attempted to deliver food to him but was stopped from handing it over personally. She was instructed to pass the meal through an official of the commission instead.

He further claimed that the former governor suffered a nosebleed overnight while in detention, a development that has heightened concerns among his family and legal team about his health, welfare and access to loved ones and counsel.

The statement also revealed that on the night of February 18, El-Rufai was moved from EFCC custody to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission without prior notice to him or his lawyers.

Since the transfer, his legal team has reportedly applied for bail before the commission but has not received any response.

Adekeye insisted that no valid remand order has been presented to justify the continued detention of the former governor beyond constitutionally permitted limits.

He added that El-Rufai is expected to appear before the Federal High Court on February 25 in a fundamental rights enforcement suit against the Federal Government, the ICPC, the EFCC and the Department of State Services, seeking an order admitting him to bail.

The aide warned that the situation raises serious questions about due process and the protection of detainees’ rights as legal proceedings commence.

Court documents show that El-Rufai is also challenging the search of his Abuja residence by anti-corruption operatives, which his lawyers described as unlawful and defective.

Through his counsel, Oluwole Iyamu, SAN, he argued that the search warrant used was flawed and lacked proper legal basis, making the operation unconstitutional.

His legal team further claimed that documents and electronic devices were seized without an inventory, contrary to existing laws governing arrests and searches.

The former governor is asking the court to nullify the search, order the return of all seized items and award ₦1 billion in damages.

They also stated that the incident caused “significant psychological trauma, humiliation, distress, reputational damage, and emotional harm.”

The latest allegations surrounding his health and treatment in custody have intensified scrutiny of the conduct of security agencies handling the matter.

CBN Governor sacks Adesoji Ogungbesa, Mustapha Oladeji Jimoh from MINT’s board over criminal infractions; may hand them over to anti-corruption agencies

by Leading Reporters February 22, 2026
written by Leading Reporters

The Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Olayemi Cardoso has sacked Mr Adesoji Ogungbesa and Mr Mustapha Oladeji Mohammed-Jimoh from the board of the Nigeria Security, Printing and Minting company for gross abuse of office and violations of laid down principles, a discreet has revealed to LeadingReporters.

The source also hinted on possible prosecution of the duo by the anti-corruption agencies over abuse of office, and mismanagement of funds. Recall that LeadingReporters has previously made publications on the illegal employment of Adesoji Ogungbesa and Mustapha Jimoh, whose employment were said to have been facilitated by one Mr. Olakunle Abiola, a former aide to a deputy governor Emem Usoro of central bank of Nigeria.  Mr Olakunle Abiola was later sacked for falsification of his credentials.

The CBN source who revealed this to LeadingReporters hinted that the Central Bank Governor may not end at just dismissing the duo but may hand them over to the anti-corruption agencies for proper investigations and possible prosecution if found culpable.  The source said that despite series of intervention from politicians and top religious personalities from South West Nigeria, the governor was quoted to have said that sentiments had no place in his quest to position MINT and other affiliate organisations to perform optimally under his watch.

“The governor bluntly refused all the overtures made to him to upturn his decisions about the sacked board members. He has vowed to personally ensure that MINT lives up to expectation in terms of service delivery.

Meanwhile, LeadingReporters investigation revealed that both Adesoji Ogungbesa and Mustapha Oladeji Jimoh were beneficiaries of a backdoor employment arrangement as both lacked the prerequisite qualifications to sit on board of MINT.

A copy of the panel of interviewers’ report dated 22nd of December, 2023, following an interview conducted on the 21st December, 2023 exclusively obtained by LeadingReporters revealed that both Adesoji Ogungbesa and Mustapha Oladeji Jimoh did not qualify for the positions of Executive Directors. While Mustapha, a Chartered Accountants with long practicing experience was said to have been limited by his age (63 at the point of interview), Adesoji Ogungbesa was said to have no verifiable credentials to enable him work for the position of Chief Financial Officer which he was vying for at the time of interview.  Another limitation was the salary he claimed to have previously earned (N71m/pa which our investigation revealed is false) from his former employer, Sahara Group, as against N11m/pa payable for position of a senior manager in MINT.

Adesoji Ogungbesa, despite not qualified for the position of a Chief Financial Officer was said to have approached his friend Olakunle Abiola who manipulated the process that eventually landed Adesoji as an Ag. Executive Director, Corporate Services.

The source said that Mr Olayemi Cardoso is currently sourcing for highly technical and competent hands to join the board in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renew Hope Agenda.

Ramadan: Hisbah arrests nine in Kano for allegedly eating in public

by Folarin Kehinde February 19, 2026
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Kano State Hisbah Board has confirmed the arrest of nine Muslims for allegedly eating in public on Wednesday, the first day of the Ramadan fast.

The board’s deputy commander, Mujahid Aminudeen, said the suspects consist of two women and seven men.

According to him, the individuals were apprehended after they were sighted eating openly during daylight hours.

“We arrested them and they are with us, where we will teach them the importance of fasting, how to pray and read the Qur’an, and how to become good Muslims,” Aminudeen said.

He, however, did not state when the suspects would be released.

Kano State, which is predominantly Muslim, operates Islamic law alongside Nigeria’s civil legal system.

During the Ramadan period, officials of the Hisbah Board routinely monitor food outlets, markets and public spaces to ensure adherence to fasting rules among Muslims.

37 Miners Die, 25 Hospitalised After Suspected Carbon Monoxide Exposure in Plateau

by Folarin Kehinde February 18, 2026
written by Folarin Kehinde

No fewer than 37 miners have reportedly lost their lives following suspected carbon monoxide exposure at an underground mining site in Zurak community, Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Eyewitness accounts revealed that the tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday while the victims were engaged in zinc extraction at the site. Toxic fumes were said to have suddenly filled the mining tunnels, leading to suffocation and a subsequent collapse within the facility.

Sources disclosed that the affected miners inhaled the poisonous gas during routine operations underground. Most of the deceased were young men aged between 20 and 35.

Meanwhile, 25 other miners who survived the exposure are currently receiving treatment at a nearby health facility.

Confirming the development, the Executive Chairman of Wase Local Government Area, Hamisu Anani, described the incident as tragic and deeply worrisome. He lamented that the deaths occurred during the holy month of Ramadan, a period when many Muslims are engaged in fasting and prayers.

Anani stated that the mining site has since been secured to forestall further casualties and allow for thorough investigation into the exact cause of the suspected gas leak.

He appealed to both the state and federal governments to provide urgent assistance to the victims and their families, noting that the tragedy has left the community in grief.

Also reacting, the lawmaker representing Wase State Constituency assured that efforts were ongoing to support those affected, as investigations into the incident continue.

FCT Polls: PDP candidate steps down for APC’s Ishaku after Wike’s intervention

by Folarin Kehinde February 18, 2026
written by Folarin Kehinde

In a dramatic political realignment less than 72 hours to the Federal Capital Territory FCT Area Council elections, the Peoples Democratic Party PDP chairmanship candidate for Bwari Area Council, Julius Adamu, has withdrawn from the race to endorse the All Progressives Congress APC candidate, Joshua Ishaku Musa.

The high-stakes move, which followed the direct intervention of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, was finalized on Wednesday at a bipartisan stakeholders meeting in the Bwari Area Council.

The announcement effectively narrows the contest for the chairmanship seat ahead of the February 21 polls.

Addressing a gathering of supporters and party stakeholders, Adamu revealed that his decision was the product of “deep consultation” with the FCT Minister.

He framed the withdrawal as a move to maintain local harmony, emphasizing his personal ties with the APC candidate.

“I am standing here before you this afternoon to tell you that I have been in deep consultation with the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

“I have come to the conclusion that I and Joshua, we are brothers. It will not be nice for two brothers to kill themselves over one office. Therefore, I have relinquished my support to Hon. Joshua”, said Adamu.

Urging his political base to shift their loyalty, Adamu added, “I want to urge all my supporters to support Joshua to win this election.”

Wike, who has increasingly played a kingmaker role in the territory’s politics, threw his full weight behind the new alliance.

Speaking at the event, Wike incentivized the electorate by linking the APC candidate’s potential victory to accelerated infrastructure development in the area.

“The people of Bwari, let me tell you why you should support Joshua. If you vote for Joshua, I will do more roads in Bwari. Let nobody make any mistake; on Saturday, come out and make sure that Joshua wins the election”, he said.

This development comes as the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC concludes preparations for elections across the six Area Councils – Abuja Municipal (AMAC), Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Abaji and Kwali.

The Bwari contest had been viewed as a critical battleground, but this cross-party pact has now significantly alters the electoral math in favour of the APC.

The alliance also underscores the Minister’s ongoing strategy of fostering cooperation between elements of the PDP and the ruling APC, a stance that continues to define the political landscape of the FCT under his administration.

BREAKING: Tinubu signs controversial Electoral Act amendment bill into law

by Folarin Kehinde February 18, 2026
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Tinubu has signed the controversial Electoral Act 2022 (Amendment) Bill into law, formally repealing and reenacting key provisions of Nigeria’s electoral framework ahead of the 2027 general election.

Leading Reporters gathered that the signing ceremony took place on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, hours after the harmonised version of the bill was transmitted to the Presidency by the National Assembly (NASS).

It would be recalled that the amendment sparked widespread debate across the political spectrum, particularly over provisions relating to the electronic transmission of election results. Critics argue that the new law could not provide a safeguard for real-time electronic transmission of election results from polling units.

A major flashpoint is Clause 60(3), which stops short of making electronic transmission of election results mandatory in real time, instead leaving significant discretion to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to determine the mode and procedure for result transmission.

Supporters of the amendment insist the law provides flexibility for INEC to deploy technology based on prevailing infrastructure realities, including network coverage challenges in rural communities. They argue that the changes aim to prevent logistical breakdowns that could undermine the credibility of elections.

However, opposition parties and civil society groups have warned that the amendment could erode public trust in the electoral process. A former INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mike Igini, had publicly urged the President to withhold assent, describing aspects of the bill as potentially detrimental to electoral transparency.

Beyond result transmission, the new law also shortens certain pre-election timelines and adjusts procedures for candidate nomination, substitution, and dispute resolution, provisions analysts say could significantly reshape the political calendar leading into 2027.

Kaduna Terror Victims Demand Accountability for Rights Abuses Under El-Rufai Administration

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 17, 2026
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

A coalition of terror victims in Kaduna State has called for accountability over human rights abuses perpetrated under the eight-year administration of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

The victims made the call on Monday in a statement signed on their behalf by a coalition of human rights defenders including former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission ,Professor Chidi Anslem Odinkalu .

The coalition, comprising human rights defenders and victims’ families, demanded justice for the victims and an end to impunity.

“We speak today as representatives of countless individuals, families, and communities who endured eight years of profound hardship, terror, fear, and loss under the governorship of Nasir El-Rufai in Kaduna State (2015–2023),” the statement read.

The coalition cited cases of arbitrary abductions, persecution of critics, and unlawful demolitions of homes, highlighting the abduction and murder of HRH Dr. Maiwada Raphael Galadima, the Agwam Adara, and the disappearance of Abubakar Idris (Dadiyata), a lecturer and social media commentator

The statement also condemned Bashir El-Rufai’s tweet perceived as gloating over Dadiyata’s abduction and called for thorough investigations and prosecutions.

The coalition urged law enforcement agencies and human rights institutions to take action, offering testimonies and evidence to support inquiries.

“We speak today as representatives of countless individuals, families, and communities who endured eight years of profound hardship, terror, fear, and loss under the governorship of Nasir el-Rufai in Kaduna State (2015–2023). Our coalition includes citizens from all walks of life: community and business leaders, serving and retired public servants, traditional rulers, faith leaders, academics, journalists, lawyers, and other professionals.

“Among the many victims are high-profile cases that symbolize the era’s impunity:

“HRH Dr. Maiwada Raphael Galadima, the Agwam Adara (paramount ruler of the Adara Chiefdom), abducted in October 2018 and brutally murdered despite ransom payment. His killing occurred amid efforts to restructure traditional institutions, including the controversial conversion of the chiefdom into an emirate structure, deepening ethnic and communal tensions. Till date the suspects arrested for the murder of Agwam Adara are yet to be successfully prosecuted and their whereabouts can not be ascertained.

Abubakar Idris (Dadiyata), a lecturer at the Federal University Dutsenma and social media commentator critical of governance issues, abducted from his residence in Barnawa, Kaduna, on August 2, 2019. He has remained missing, effectively disappeared for nearly seven years. August 2026 will mark the seventh anniversary of his abduction and trigger the statutory presumption of death under Nigerian law.

“Shortly after Dadiyata’s abduction, on December 23, 2019, at 10:16 hrs, Bashir el-Rufai, son of the then-Governor, posted a tweet widely perceived as gloating over the incident and dismissing calls for his safe return.

“During his tenure, Nasir el-Rufai presided over a pattern of indiscriminate actions: arbitrary abductions, persecution of critics, reprisal violence, unlawful demolitions of homes, mass dismissals of workers without due process, forced sackings by employers of perceived opponents, and the displacement of citizens into exile.

“These acts bypassed constitutional safeguards and Nigerian law, turning gubernatorial immunity into unchecked impunity.

“We are deeply troubled by recent attempts to reframe this history, portraying Nasir el-Rufai as a champion of due process and human rights, while survivors and families continue to seek truth and justice.

“On behalf of ourselves, and in solemn memory of those killed or disappeared who cannot speak, we have a moral and civic duty to bear witness. Our sole demand is accountability under the rule of law: thorough, independent investigations; prosecutions where evidence warrants; and closure for traumatized victims and families. By pursuing justice, we aim to prevent future suffering and uphold the dignity of all Nigerians.

“We stand ready to cooperate fully with all relevant law enforcement agencies, judicial bodies, and human rights institutions in Nigeria. We will provide testimonies, evidence, and any material assistance to support inquiries and ensure those responsible for crimes face due process”,the statement added

Our Correspondent reports that other human rights defenders who also signed the statement calling for accountability under former Governor Elrufai’s administration included Progressive Forum (SKIPFo) and the Atrocities Watch Africa, AWA;

Community Development & Rights Advocacy Foundation ; Resilient Aid and Dialogue Initiative;

Audu Maikori, Esq;Gloria Ballason, Esq; Steven Kefas;Luka Binniyat; Midat Joseph; Segun Onibiyo;House of Justice as well as
;Southern Kaduna Indigenously
