Zulum Gifts Anambra Health Worker Gets House, Son Employment for 24 Years of Service

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 8, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has rewarded Mrs. Marbel Ijeoma Duaka, a health worker from Anambra State, with a fully furnished two-bedroom house in recognition of her dedication and service to the state.

Governor Zulum also announced an automatic employment offer for her son, Anthony, a graduate of Banking and Finance, at the state-owned Kashim Ibrahim University, Maiduguri.

Presenting the house key to Mrs. Duaka, the governor commended her for over two decades of selfless service at the Primary Healthcare Centre in Mafa Local Government Area, where she continued to work throughout the height of the Boko Haram insurgency.

“She has been working here for over 24 years and has never left Mafa for a single month. During the Boko Haram crisis, most people fled the town, but she stayed throughout the conflict despite being a non-indigene,” Zulum said.

The governor further revealed that Mrs. Duaka had treated many members of his family, including his late mother.

“The allocation letter should be issued in your name. Do not leave Mafa, even after you retire,” he directed.

Zulum added, “Your son, Anthony, will be given automatic employment at the Kashim Ibrahim University, Maiduguri. His employment takes effect immediately.”

Police Suspend Tinted Glass Permit Enforcement Following Court Order

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 8, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Nigeria Police Force has suspended the enforcement of the vehicle tinted glass permit following a court order halting the exercise.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the development on Wednesday during an interview on AIT.

According to Adeh, the decision came after the police officially received the court order.

“Information reaching me from the office of the PRO is that the order has been received, and the enforcement of the tinted permit is now on hold pending the court’s verdict,” she stated.

She explained that the suspension would remain in effect until the legal process is concluded.

“We are waiting for the verdict. We are not against the courts, and we will continue to wait until we get a verdict,” Adeh added.

The police spokesperson further clarified that the tinted glass permit policy was introduced for security reasons, noting that some criminal activities had been perpetrated using vehicles with darkened windows.

“The law was not made by us. We are enforcers. The policy was purely security-driven. Some criminals were using tinted vehicles to commit offences, making it difficult for law enforcement to identify suspects,” she said.

BREAKING: Tinubu’s minister resigns after certificate forgery allegation

by Folarin Kehinde October 7, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Geoffrey Uche Nnaji, has resigned from office following allegations of certificate forgery leveled against him.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the minister’s resignation, according to a statement released on Tuesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Onanuga said, “President Tinubu accepted the resignation of Geoffrey Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, following some allegations against him.”

He explained that Nnaji, who was appointed in August 2023, tendered his resignation in a letter to the President, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve the country.

The former minister reportedly attributed his decision to sustained political attacks and blackmail by his opponents.

“President Tinubu thanked him for his service and wished him success in his future endeavours,” Onanuga added.

BREAKING: Yakubu step aside after 10 years INEC Chairman

by Folarin Kehinde October 7, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

After a decade of steering Nigeria’s elections through sweeping reforms and digital innovations, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, on Tuesday announced his resignation.

Yakubu, who has been at the helm since 2015, formally stepped down during the Commission’s quarterly meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners RECs in Abuja, describing the session as his “last as chairman.”

Citing Section 306 of the 1999 Constitution, Yakubu said the move would allow a smooth transition as INEC braces for a busy electoral calendar.

By consensus of the National Commissioners, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, the most senior commissioner, takes over in acting capacity pending the appointment of a substantive chairman.

In his farewell remarks, Yakubu reflected on his 10-year stewardship, pointing to INEC’s digital transformation — from biometric voter registration and electronic result transmission to online nomination and monitoring systems.

“Together, we built a foundation for credible elections in Africa’s largest democracy,” he declared.

He acknowledged support from political parties, the National Peace Committee, civil society, security agencies, the media, and especially corps members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), whom he described as “the most patriotic election officials.”

The outgoing chairman also unveiled two publications capturing his tenure: “Election Management in Nigeria 2015–2025” and “Innovations in Electoral Technology 2015–2025,” now available on INEC’s website.

Yakubu leaves with major elections looming — including next month’s Anambra governorship poll, the FCT Area Council vote in February 2026, and the Ekiti and Osun governorship contests later that year. Preparations for the 2027 general elections, he revealed, have already begun.

FG Seeks Fresh $2b Dollars China Loan For Power Grid

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 7, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Federal Government is in advanced negotiations with China’s Export-Import Bank for a $2 billion loan to finance the construction of a new electricity super grid aimed at addressing Nigeria’s chronic power supply challenges.

According to Bloomberg, the proposed project is designed to boost power transmission across the country’s eastern and western regions, where most of Nigeria’s industrial consumers are located.

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, revealed the plan during an economic summit in Abuja on Monday, explaining that the initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to decentralise power generation and strengthen the national grid.

“It’s part of plans to decentralise power generation in Nigeria and get the heavy commercial users that left the power grid because of its unreliability to return,” Adelabu said.

Nigeria currently has an electricity generation capacity of about 13 gigawatts, but only a third of that reaches consumers due to transmission inefficiencies and frequent system collapses.

The new super grid project is expected to improve reliability, encourage industrial users to reconnect to the national grid, and support economic growth through more stable energy supply.

Retired Air Vice Marshal Dies on Abuja-bound British Airways Flight

by Folarin Kehinde October 6, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

A British Airways (BA) flight from London to Abuja was diverted to Barcelona, Spain, in the early hours of Monday, after Osita Obierika, a retired Nigerian Air Vice Marshal from Anambra State, died onboard.

The aircraft, which departed London’s Heathrow Airport at 11:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 5, was scheduled to land at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, by 5:00 a.m. Monday.

However, at about 1:30 a.m., the pilot declared a medical emergency and diverted to El Prat Airport in Barcelona.

Dailytrust revealed that the deceased, believed to be in his early 80s, had been ill and was being flown back to Nigeria for further treatment when he passed away mid-flight.

He was one of only a few surviving retired air vice marshals from Anambra State.

The incident caused distress among passengers, with confusion onboard reportedly triggering a second medical emergency involving a pregnant woman.

Her condition could not be immediately confirmed at press time.

British Airways, in a message to passengers, apologised for the disruption and assured them of support. “Passengers are advised to expect an email with more information and can reach out to the airline’s Live Chat feature for support. British Airways acknowledges the inconvenience and thanks passengers for their patience and understanding,” the airline stated.

JUST IN: Tinubu’s minister dodges press briefing on forgery scandal

by Folarin Kehinde October 6, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The minister of science and technology, Uche Nnaji, on Monday failed to attend a press conference his office convened to address allegations of certificate forgery against him.

Journalists were invited to the event, scheduled for 2 p.m. at the ministry’s conference room in Abuja, with the invitation titled “Minister Speaks”.

The invitation suggested that Nnaji would personally respond to questions about an investigation that accused him of forging his University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) degree and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate.

However, after over an hour’s wait, the minister did not show up.

The briefing eventually commenced at about 3:30 p.m. and was presided over by Nnaji’s spokesperson, Robert Ngwu, alongside other officials of the ministry.

Premium Times had on Saturday published findings from a two-year investigation alleging that Nnaji falsified the academic and service credentials he submitted to President Bola Tinubu and the Senate during his ministerial screening in 2023.

Allegations of certificate forgery have trailed the minister since July 2023, when Tinubu included him among the first batch of 28 ministerial nominees sent to the Senate for confirmation.

Critics have long claimed that Nnaji did not complete his studies at UNN and that the certificates he presented to federal authorities were forged.

Kano Govt Trains 380 Youths To Fight Phone Theft

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 6, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Kano State Government has enrolled 380 youths into the State Corporate Security Institute in Gabasawa for paramilitary training aimed at curbing phone snatching, thuggery, and other related crimes across the state.

The Commandant of the institute, Captain Muhammad Mai Gaskiya (rtd), said the training programme is designed to equip participants with skills in phone snatching prevention, VIP protection, and defensive driving. He added that the exercise also includes lectures by officials from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and counselling sessions conducted by Hisbah personnel.

According to him, parade drills and physical fitness exercises are also key components of the training, intended to build discipline and resilience among the trainees.

Captain Mai Gaskiya urged the participants to take the training seriously, noting that upon successful completion, they would be absorbed as civil servants to support security operations and help maintain law and order in Kano State.

Nigerians Call for Minister Uche Nnaji Resignation Over Alleged Certificate Forgery

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 6, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Pressure is growing on Nigeria’s Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Uche Nnaji, to step down following allegations of certificate forgery.

Two prominent civil society organisations — the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) and Transparency International Nigeria — have urged the minister to resign and apologise to Nigerians over the scandal.

CISLAC’s Executive Director, Comrade Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, made the call in an interview with newsmen, stressing that public officials should uphold integrity and transparency.

Rafsanjani noted that politicians are not required to possess university degrees to hold office, as the constitution permits individuals with school-leaving certificates to serve. He, however, condemned any form of dishonesty in credentials.

“If you lie on your certificate, whether it’s a degree or not, you should simply resign once it’s exposed,” Rafsanjani said. “You cannot promote lies and fraud while in leadership. What example are you setting?”

He added that the minister’s continued stay in office may be due to his closeness to the president, but insisted that “leaders must lead by example.”

Rafsanjani further urged President Bola Tinubu to act decisively, warning that keeping officials with integrity issues undermines public trust.

“There are several ministers and public officials facing serious integrity challenges — from corruption allegations to certificate scandals,” he said. “If you want citizens to respect leadership, you cannot have people with damaged reputations in office.”

He also referenced a recent controversy involving a presidential aide who allegedly claimed a degree from a European university that later denied any affiliation.

As of press time, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), under which Nnaji serves, has not issued an official statement on the matter.

JUST IN: Many feared dead in Ogun tanker fire explosion

by Folarin Kehinde October 3, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

An unconfirmed number of people have died in a tanker fire accident that occurred at midnight along the Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the incident happened at about 1 a.m. on Friday. He explained that a 33,000-litre petrol tanker overturned due to excessive speeding, spilling its contents on the highway.

Speaking to newsmen, Akinbiyi said, “The case of an inferno caused by a 30,000-litre fuel-laden tanker which fell on its side and spilled its contents around 0100hrs today, along the Abeokuta–Kobape–Siun–Sagamu Interchange stretch of the PMB Expressway, due to excessive speed and loss of control, has been reported.

“The effect of the unfortunate incident also extended to the burning of a truck and a tow vehicle along the roadside, as well as the destruction of a PHCN cable supplying electricity to Mowe and environs.

“Though the casualty figures cannot be ascertained presently, rescue and emergency services made up of TRACE, Ogun State and Nestlé PLC Fire Service, FRSC, and the Police are still on the ground to restore normalcy and orderliness after quenching the fire and carrying out the decantation process.”

He urged road users to be patient and follow traffic diversions and re-routing measures put in place by TRACE, the police, the Ogun State Fire Service, FRSC, Amotekun, and the NSCDC.

“However, any inconveniences as a result of this unfortunate incident are highly regretted,” he added.
