NFF blasts Dessers, faults Ekong after Eagles’ draw with South Africa

by Folarin Kehinde September 10, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigeria Football Federation has openly criticised Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers and faulted captain William Troost-Ekong after Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with South Africa in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Bloemfontein.

The Eagles, who needed a victory to revive their fading hopes of qualifying for next year’s tournament in North America, suffered an early setback when Ola Aina limped off in the eighth minute.

Matters got worse when Troost-Ekong turned the ball into his own net in the 25th minute to hand Bafana Bafana the lead.

Though Calvin Bassey headed home an equaliser just before half-time, Nigeria failed to convert possession into goals after the break, with substitutes Tolu Arokodare, Samuel Chukwueze and Chrisantus Uche all unable to break down the South African defence.

In its post-match statement made available to journalists on Tuesday by the NFF Director of Communications, Dr Ademola Olajire, the NFF singled out Dessers, who was withdrawn at half-time, for particular criticism.

“Cyriel Dessers, who had an unimpressive game in Uyo where he turned out to be a substitute that was substituted, did not have a better game as he was too slow to latch onto passes, could not win aerial balls and did little in bringing alive the Nigerian attack,” the statement read.

The statement also faulted skipper Troost-Ekong for handing the Bafana Bafana the opener.

“The Super Eagles’ fighting spirit was diminished for a period after team captain William Ekong inadvertently swept the ball into his own net in the 25th minute, wrong-footing Stanley Nwabali to give the Bafana the lead and great impetus,” the statement noted.

The federation, however, praised Calvin Bassey for his resilience after the Fulham defender grabbed Nigeria’s equaliser just before the break.

“Defender Calvin Bassey showed immense fighting spirit and resilience to get Nigeria back into the game with a minute left of the first period, when he ran with the ball upfront. The ball found Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, whose pull-out Bassey met firmly to nod past Ronwen Williams for the leveller,” the federation added.

But it reserved more criticism for the team’s second-half display.

Despite dominating possession in the second half, the NFF lamented that the Eagles “delivered little,” noting that substitutes Tolu Arokodare and Dele-Bashiru failed to convert late opportunities.

The draw leaves Nigeria with 11 points from eight matches in Group C, while South Africa remain top with 17.

The Super Eagles must now beat Lesotho and Benin Republic in their remaining fixtures and also hope rivals drop points to stand any chance of reaching next year’s World Cup in North America.

Bayer Leverkusen Sacks Erik ten Hag After Two Matches

by Nelson Ugwuagbo September 1, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Bayer Leverkusen sacked Dutch manager Erik ten Hag on Monday after just two Bundesliga matches, where the team earned only one point from a loss to RB Leipzig and a draw with Werder Bremen.

The decision followed a major squad overhaul, with key players like Florian Wirtz and Jonathan Tah leaving, leading to reported dressing-room tensions and tactical failures.

This marks one of the fastest managerial dismissals in Bundesliga history, amid growing frustration over the club’s inability to maintain momentum from their previous title-winning season.

written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea is set for a warm welcome when he returns to Old Trafford for the first time as a Fiorentina player on Saturday.

The Red Devils made this known in a statement posted on their official website on Tuesday, ahead of their final pre-season fixture of the 2025/26 campaign against the Italian club.

De Gea, who left Manchester United in 2023 after 12 years of service, joined Fiorentina earlier this summer.

Signed from Atlético Madrid in 2011 as a long-term successor to Edwin van der Sar, the Spaniard made over 500 appearances for United, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, Europa League, and two Golden Glove awards during his time at the club.

His return is expected to evoke fond memories among supporters, who are preparing to give the veteran shot-stopper a rousing reception at the Theatre of Dreams.

LASUED Wins Gold at Lagos Campus Beach Soccer 2025

by Nelson Ugwuagbo July 30, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) has emerged gold medal winner of Lagos Campus Beach Soccer 2025 having secured the highest number of points across all their matches.

LASUED demonstrated remarkable resilience and tactical superiority, defeating Lagos City Polytechnic 1–0 in their opening game and holding University of Lagos (UNILAG) to a goalless draw in a tense final encounter.

UNILAG, known for its rich sporting legacy, fought valiantly throughout the tournament. However, back-to-back draws against LASUED and Lagos City Polytechnic dashed their gold medal hopes, earning the Akoka-based team a well-deserved silver medal.

Lagos City Polytechnic displayed impressive skill and teamwork, finished third—marking their strongest showing in a campus-level sports competition to date.

The tournament was flagged off by the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Sanwo-Olu on Grassroots Sports Development, Mr. Adebanji Atewogboye, who reaffirmed the government’s dedication to enhancing the quality and reach of future editions.

“This event aligns perfectly with the Governor’s agenda of promoting grassroots sports development and using it as a vehicle for social impact. We are committed to supporting initiatives like this to positively transform the lives of youths in Lagos State,” said Mr. Atewogboye.

Bamidele Adeleye, Managing Director of BrandEscort Communications, expressed his excitement over the success of the inaugural edition, revealing that plans are already underway to expand the tournament in 2026 by inviting higher institutions from other states to participate.

Organized by the Lagos State Government in collaboration with BrandEscort Communications, the Lagos Campus Beach Soccer tournament brings together top tertiary institutions from across the state in a unique celebration of sporting talent and athleticism.

Being the first of its kind in Nigeria, the tournament is designed to discover and spotlight promising young footballers from tertiary institutions within Lagos State and beyond.

TRANSFER: Three Clubs Fight For Super Eagle Star, Frank Onyeka

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 27, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka is reportedly on the radar of Burnley, VfB Stuttgart, and Fiorentina as uncertainty surrounds his future at Premier League side Brentford.

The 27-year-old recently returned to Brentford following a loan stint with Bundesliga outfit FC Augsburg during the 2023/24 season.

However, with just one year remaining on his contract and the recent departure of Brentford manager Thomas Frank to Tottenham Hotspur, Onyeka’s future remains unclear.

Speaking recently, Onyeka admitted he is uncertain about where he will be playing next season and is waiting for the club to appoint a new head coach before making any decision regarding his future.

According to transfer expert Ben Jacobs, additional clubs have also shown interest in the defensive midfielder, who may be reluctant to sign a contract extension with the Bees.

David Beckham to Receive Knighthood from King Charles III

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 6, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Former England football captain David Beckham is set to be awarded a knighthood by King Charles III next week in recognition of his contributions to football and charity, according to reports on Friday.

Beckham, 50, is expected to be named in the King’s Birthday Honours List, the BBC and other outlets reported. The honour will see him take the title of “Sir David,” while his wife, Victoria Beckham, will become “Lady Beckham.”

The football icon joins a list of celebrated British sports figures who have received knighthoods, including former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and tennis star Sir Andy Murray.

Beckham earned 115 caps for England and enjoyed a distinguished club career with Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain. He currently serves as president and co-owner of Major League Soccer side Inter Miami and co-owns English League Two club Salford City.

Previously, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2003, a lower-ranking honour in the UK honours system. Victoria Beckham later received the same title for her contributions to the fashion industry.

Last month, Beckham was named among Time magazine’s 100 most influential figures in philanthropy. He serves as an official ambassador for The King’s Foundation, focusing on youth education and environmental awareness, and has been a UNICEF goodwill ambassador since 2005.

Beckham was previously considered for a knighthood after his role in London’s successful bid for the 2012 Olympic Games. However, reports indicated his nomination was delayed due to concerns over his involvement in a tax avoidance scheme, from which he was later cleared.
