written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea is set for a warm welcome when he returns to Old Trafford for the first time as a Fiorentina player on Saturday.

The Red Devils made this known in a statement posted on their official website on Tuesday, ahead of their final pre-season fixture of the 2025/26 campaign against the Italian club.

De Gea, who left Manchester United in 2023 after 12 years of service, joined Fiorentina earlier this summer.

Signed from Atlético Madrid in 2011 as a long-term successor to Edwin van der Sar, the Spaniard made over 500 appearances for United, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, Europa League, and two Golden Glove awards during his time at the club.

His return is expected to evoke fond memories among supporters, who are preparing to give the veteran shot-stopper a rousing reception at the Theatre of Dreams.

17-year-old Yobe student emerge world best in English language

by Folarin Kehinde August 5, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nafisa Abdullah Aminu, a 17-year-old student from Yobe State, has been named the World Best in English Language Skills at the 2025 TeenEagle Global Finals held in London, United Kingdom.

Representing Nigeria through the Nigerian Tulip International College, Nafisa outshone over 20,000 participants from 69 countries, marking a historic achievement that has brought global academic recognition to both her state and country.

The TeenEagle competition is an internationally recognised contest that assesses English proficiency, critical thinking, and communication skills among students from both English-speaking and non-English-speaking nations

Nafisa’s win was confirmed in a statement by the head of her family, Hassan Salifu, who attributed her success to dedication, discipline, and the enabling support of the state government.

“Our daughter’s global success would not have been possible without the visionary support for education by His Excellency, Governor Mai Mala Buni, whose efforts have brought international honour to our state and nation,” Salifu said, as quoted by Leadership.

He also noted that Nafisa outperformed students from native English-speaking countries, a feat that, according to him, highlights her intelligence and preparation.

Her victory has sparked celebrations in Yobe and beyond, with her family extending appreciation to Governor Buni and the staff at NTIC for nurturing her academic potential.

“Nafisa’s success is a testament to the power of educational investment. Governor Buni’s commitment has not only transformed schools in the state but also positioned Yobe and Nigeria on the global stage,” the family added.

LASUED Wins Gold at Lagos Campus Beach Soccer 2025

by Nelson Ugwuagbo July 30, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) has emerged gold medal winner of Lagos Campus Beach Soccer 2025 having secured the highest number of points across all their matches.

LASUED demonstrated remarkable resilience and tactical superiority, defeating Lagos City Polytechnic 1–0 in their opening game and holding University of Lagos (UNILAG) to a goalless draw in a tense final encounter.

UNILAG, known for its rich sporting legacy, fought valiantly throughout the tournament. However, back-to-back draws against LASUED and Lagos City Polytechnic dashed their gold medal hopes, earning the Akoka-based team a well-deserved silver medal.

Lagos City Polytechnic displayed impressive skill and teamwork, finished third—marking their strongest showing in a campus-level sports competition to date.

The tournament was flagged off by the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Sanwo-Olu on Grassroots Sports Development, Mr. Adebanji Atewogboye, who reaffirmed the government’s dedication to enhancing the quality and reach of future editions.

“This event aligns perfectly with the Governor’s agenda of promoting grassroots sports development and using it as a vehicle for social impact. We are committed to supporting initiatives like this to positively transform the lives of youths in Lagos State,” said Mr. Atewogboye.

Bamidele Adeleye, Managing Director of BrandEscort Communications, expressed his excitement over the success of the inaugural edition, revealing that plans are already underway to expand the tournament in 2026 by inviting higher institutions from other states to participate.

Organized by the Lagos State Government in collaboration with BrandEscort Communications, the Lagos Campus Beach Soccer tournament brings together top tertiary institutions from across the state in a unique celebration of sporting talent and athleticism.

Being the first of its kind in Nigeria, the tournament is designed to discover and spotlight promising young footballers from tertiary institutions within Lagos State and beyond.

by Nelson Ugwuagbo July 25, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

President Bola Tinubu has approved the full payment of allowances and match bonuses for the Super Falcons ahead of their final match against Morocco in the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, disclosed this to reporters in Abuja on Thursday, confirming that all entitlements for players, coaches, and officials—covering the entire tournament up to the final on July 26—had been disbursed for immediate payment.

Dikko described the move as a reflection of the administration’s renewed commitment to Nigerian athletes, referring to it as “policy in motion.”

“This is now the standard—timely payments without drama or delays,” he said.

FIGC Bans Maduka Okoye for Two Months Over Betting Scandal

by Nelson Ugwuagbo July 23, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Udinese and Nigeria goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, has been handed a two-month suspension by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) over his involvement in a betting-related misconduct during the 2023/2024 Serie A season.

The 24-year-old was found guilty of sporting misconduct after he allegedly sought to deliberately receive a yellow card during a league match against Lazio. The caution reportedly triggered unusual betting activity, prompting an investigation into possible manipulation.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the FIGC’s National Federal Tribunal confirmed that Okoye had been sanctioned for intentionally committing an act to influence betting outcomes. The ruling followed a disciplinary inquiry into the incident.

The development has reignited concerns over the integrity of the sport and the growing threat posed by illegal betting syndicates.

Okoye’s two-month ban will take effect from the first official match of the 2025/2026 season, ruling him out of all sanctioned competitions during that period.
