Health Ministry Warns Against Salt Misinformation, Counters Pastor Oyakhilome’s Claims

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 8, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has cautioned Nigerians against misinformation on salt consumption following a viral video in which Pastor Chris Oyakhilome urged the public to ignore medical advice on the matter.

In a statement released on Wednesday and signed by the Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, Alaba Balogun, the Ministry emphasized the dangers of excessive salt intake and the importance of evidence-based health guidance.

While acknowledging the influential role of religious leaders, the Ministry warned that misinformation could jeopardize public health. It stressed that sodium, though essential for nerve function, muscle movement, and fluid balance, can lead to serious health issues when consumed in excess.

“Excessive salt intake increases the risk of non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, stroke, heart failure, and kidney disease,” the statement read.

Citing recommendations from the World Health Organization and Nigerian health authorities, the Ministry noted that daily salt consumption should not exceed 5 grams (about one teaspoon). However, research indicates that the average Nigerian consumes more than twice this amount, contributing to thousands of avoidable deaths each year.

To address this issue, the Ministry said it is implementing a National Sodium Reduction Strategy, which includes new national guidelines aimed at lowering sodium levels across all food categories. These range from packaged foods to meals prepared at home, in restaurants, and by street vendors.

The initiative seeks collaboration with food manufacturers, regulatory agencies, and the public to reduce sodium consumption without sacrificing taste or nutrition.

The Ministry also stressed the compatibility of science and faith in promoting public health. “Both can work hand in hand to promote health and well-being,” it stated, urging Nigerians to rely on licensed healthcare professionals for medical advice.

It reaffirmed its commitment to science-driven policy and constructive engagement with all sectors of society, including religious groups, to achieve national health objectives.

NTSB Attributes Wigwe Helicopter Crash to Pilot Error, Faults Operator’s Safety Oversight

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 8, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The United States National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has attributed the February 2024 helicopter crash that claimed the life of former Access Holdings Plc Group Chief Executive Officer, Herbert Wigwe, to pilot error arising from spatial disorientation.

In its final report released this week, the NTSB identified the “pilot’s decision to continue visual flight rules (VFR) into instrument meteorological conditions (IMC)” as the primary cause of the crash. The report stated that this led to spatial disorientation and a subsequent loss of control of the aircraft.

The crash, which occurred on February 9 near the California-Nevada border, resulted in the deaths of all six people on board, including Wigwe, his wife Doreen, their son Chizi, and Abimbola Ogunbanjo, former Group Chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group Plc.

The NTSB also criticized the helicopter operator for what it described as “inadequate oversight of its safety management processes.” It noted that the company failed to ensure pilots completed necessary flight risk assessments, addressed maintenance issues, and complied with pre-flight regulatory requirements.

The aircraft, a Eurocopter EC130 registered as N130CZ, was operating under visual flight rules at the time of the crash, despite deteriorating weather conditions that warranted a switch to instrument-based protocols.

The report underscores significant lapses in both decision-making by the pilot and systemic safety management by the operator.

Tinubu Visits Anambra, Commissions Key Infrastructure Projects

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 8, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday arrived in Anambra State on a working visit to commission several infrastructure projects executed by the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

The President commissioned a number of facilities described as “legacy” projects, including the newly constructed State Government House, the Solution Fun City, a new Governor’s Lodge — the first in 34 years — and the remodelled House of Assembly complex, among others.

Tinubu landed at the Chinua Achebe International Airport, Umueri, at about 12:14 p.m. He was accompanied by top government officials including the National Security Adviser, Alhaji Nuhu Ribadu; Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State; Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State; Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State; and the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi.

From the airport, the President was driven to the Solution Fun City, where he performed the official commissioning before proceeding to the New Government House and the Governor’s Lodge.

Speaking during the commissioning of the New Government House, Tinubu commended Governor Soludo and the people of Anambra for the infrastructural strides, noting that infrastructure remains critical to national development.

“Soludo is here providing solution, and that solution is in infrastructure and in carrying people along in the area of development,” the President said. “Serving people and building institutions — this is all about democracy. It is about prosperity. It is environmentally responsive governance.”

Court Dismisses MultiChoice Suit Against FCCPC Over Price Hike Intervention

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 8, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has dismissed a suit filed by MultiChoice Nigeria, operators of DStv and GOtv, challenging the intervention of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) in its recent subscription price increase.

In a judgment delivered on Wednesday, Justice Omotosho held that the suit was an abuse of court process, citing the existence of a similar matter already pending before a court in Lagos. He noted that MultiChoice should have pursued its claims in that forum.

While affirming the FCCPC’s powers to investigate under its enabling Act, the court ruled that the commission lacked the authority to fix or suspend prices without a specific delegation from the President through a gazetted directive. The court stated that no such delegation was presented in the case.

Justice Omotosho emphasized that Nigeria operates a free-market economy where service providers are at liberty to set prices, and consumers have the right to accept or reject them. He ruled that the FCCPC’s directive to MultiChoice to halt its price hike violated the company’s right to fair hearing and appeared selectively enforced.

The judge also dismissed the FCCPC’s claim that MultiChoice occupies a dominant market position, describing the argument as untenable. He said the services offered by the company are discretionary and not essential to national survival.

Justice Omotosho cautioned that attempts by regulatory agencies to impose price controls without legal basis could discourage investment and negatively affect the economy.

The court concluded that while the FCCPC has the power to investigate market activities, it cannot lawfully impose price restrictions without proper legal backing.

MDCAN Decries Non-Implementation of Electricity Subsidy, Raises Concerns Over Health Sector

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 7, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) has condemned the federal government’s failure to implement the approved 50 percent electricity subsidy for public hospitals, warning that the development is placing an additional burden on already overstretched health facilities serving indigent patients.

The association made its position known in a communique issued in Jos at the end of its National Executive Council meeting held in Katsina. MDCAN noted that despite the Federal Executive Council’s earlier approval of the subsidy, there has been no evidence of its implementation in hospitals across the country.

Signed by MDCAN President, Prof. Mohammad Aminu, and Secretary-General, Prof. Daiyabu Alhaji, the communique described the non-implementation as detrimental to healthcare delivery and called on the federal government to fulfill its promise without further delay.

The association also called for the immediate reversal of the consultant pharmacy cadre policy, arguing that its continued implementation could disrupt the orderliness of patient care and potentially lead to avoidable crises within the healthcare system.

On the issue of manpower development, MDCAN emphasized the importance of improved welfare packages to encourage medical doctors to take up academic roles in medical schools. This, it said, would support the federal government’s policy of doubling medical school enrolment and enhancing postgraduate training in teaching hospitals.

The association further urged the government to implement the Memorandum of Understanding addressing the demand for the universal applicability of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) across all government establishments. It also expressed concern over the persistent pay disparity between doctors working in federal institutions and those in state-owned hospitals. MDCAN pledged to continue engaging the Nigerian Governors’ Forum and individual state governors to address this issue and reduce the internal migration of doctors from state to federal health institutions.

Rising inflation and its impact on healthcare were also highlighted, with the association noting that the increasing cost of goods and services is further limiting access to medical care. MDCAN urged the government to consider reducing pump prices of petroleum products as a means of alleviating economic pressure on the population.

Finally, the association reiterated that the Fellowship of Medical Postgraduate Colleges remains the highest academic and professional qualification required for the training of doctors and for career progression at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Conclave Begins as 133 Cardinals Take Oath of Secrecy to Elect New Pope

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 7, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The 133 cardinal electors of the Catholic Church on Wednesday took their oath of secrecy and entered into conclave to begin the process of electing a new pope following the death of Pope Francis on April 21.

The cardinals gathered inside the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel, where they listened to a spiritual meditation delivered by the former Preacher of the Papal Household before commencing the election process. In line with tradition, the electors will remain in strict isolation throughout the conclave to prevent external influence.

The process is governed by centuries-old rituals and protocols. A new pontiff will be announced when white smoke rises from the chimney atop the Sistine Chapel—a signal to the world that a decision has been reached.

Pope Francis, the 266th pope, was elected in 2013 and served until his death last month.

Among the prominent names being speculated as potential successors are Italian Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, and Hungarian Cardinal Peter Erdo, according to various media reports.

Those suspended include Senator Ireti Kingibe, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, Victor Afam Ogene, Amobi Ogah, and Seyi Sowunmi. The decision was made public on Wednesday following the submission of a report by a disciplinary panel set up to investigate the allegations.

After completing its investigation, the committee submitted its findings to the party leadership. The NEC, during its meeting on May 7, deliberated on the report and ratified the committee’s recommendations in accordance with the party’s constitution.

The Labour Party has yet to disclose the specific nature of the alleged anti-party activities, but affirmed that the suspensions take immediate effect.

Nnamdi Kanu Ordered Death on Tinubu, Wike – Prosecution Tells Court

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 7, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

A prosecution witness in the ongoing trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), told the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday that the separatist leader admitted to making broadcasts in which he called for violent attacks on key Nigerian leaders, including President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Led in evidence by the prosecuting counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), the second prosecution witness testified that Kanu, while giving his statement on July 17, 2021, confirmed making the broadcasts. The witness said Kanu offered a N100 million bounty for Wike’s head and called for the burning of Tinubu’s assets.

The court admitted into evidence seven recordings of Kanu’s broadcasts, which were stored on a flash drive and played openly in the courtroom.

In a broadcast dated December 12, 2020, Kanu described the Eastern Security Network (ESN) as a vigilante group, similar to the Amotekun Corps and Miyetti Allah. Toward the end of the recording, he urged followers to kill Wike, accusing the former Rivers State governor of placing a N50 million bounty on a Biafran.

“He does not deserve to live,” Kanu was heard saying, adding that any governor who presides over the killing of his people would face similar consequences.

Another broadcast played in court, dated October 20, 2020, during the End SARS protests, featured Kanu inciting violence in Lagos. He directed his followers to attack Tinubu, whom he described as a “traitor,” and to target police and other uniformed personnel.

“Tinubu’s hotel must be burnt down. Tinubu should not be allowed to escape,” he said in the recording.

In a separate recording, Kanu was heard placing a N100 million bounty on Wike, stating: “Dead or alive, Wike is N100 million. I will pay cash. Get me his head.”

Governor Zulum Bans Sale Of Alcohol In Borno

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 7, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has announced a ban on the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages in Maiduguri and surrounding areas, citing rising insecurity and social unrest.

The announcement came on Tuesday during the inauguration of a reconstituted committee tasked with revoking illegal hotels, brothels, shanties, and criminal hideouts, and addressing the growing menace of antisocial vices across the state capital.

Governor Zulum accused some military and security personnel of abetting criminal activities and promoting vices within the city. He said the ban was part of measures to curb increasing incidents of cultism, prostitution, drug abuse, thuggery, and clashes among rival groups, which have resulted in the loss of lives and property.

The newly reconstituted committee includes representatives from the military, police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Civilian Joint Task Force, as part of what the governor described as a “holistic approach” to restoring order.
