The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced the arrest of 113 foreign nationals involved in cybercrime operations during a coordinated effort by officers from Zone 7 Command and the National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) in Abuja.

According to a statement issued by Police spokesman ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi on Monday via X (formerly Twitter), the operation was conducted on November 3, 2024, in the Jahi area of Abuja. Substantial evidence linking the suspects to sophisticated cybercrime activities, including internet fraud and marketing scams, was uncovered during the raid.

Items recovered during the operation included:

A Toyota Tundra vehicle, Multiple laptops, smartphones, and tablets.
High-capacity servers, routers, and drones, specialized equipment for cyber and game consoles, identity cards, passports, and travel documents.
The suspects have been arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja on serious charges, including computer-related fraud, unlawful access to data, marketing scams, money laundering, conspiracy, and illegal immigration.

The NPF’s statement noted that the arrests followed extensive investigations that exposed the suspects’ involvement in a network of cybercrime, immigration offenses, and human trafficking.

“The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) has compiled credible evidence against the suspects to ensure their prosecution under Nigerian law,” the statement read.

The NPF emphasized its commitment to collaborating with international law enforcement agencies and embassies to combat cybercrime and other transnational criminal activities. It vowed to hold perpetrators accountable and ensure justice is served.

President Joe Biden has issued an unconditional pardon for his son, Hunter Biden, who earlier this year became the first child of a sitting U.S. president to be convicted of a crime.

In June, Hunter was convicted on charges of illegal possession of a firearm and drug offenses, as federal law prohibits drug addicts from owning firearms. In September, he pleaded guilty to tax evasion charges.

Hunter Biden, 54, previously worked as a lawyer and lobbyist abroad, including in China and Ukraine. He was discharged from the U.S. Navy in 2014 after testing positive for cocaine.

In a statement accompanying the pardon, President Biden described his son as the victim of political persecution. “The charges in his cases came about only after several of my political opponents in Congress instigated them to attack me and oppose my election,” Biden said.

The president criticized the collapse of a plea deal negotiated between Hunter’s legal team and the Department of Justice, blaming political interference. “A carefully negotiated plea deal unraveled in the courtroom, with a number of my political opponents in Congress taking credit for applying political pressure on the process,” Biden stated.

The president defended his decision, saying he refrained from interfering in the Justice Department’s decisions. “No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son — and that is wrong,” he said.

Biden also praised his son’s resilience, highlighting his sobriety. “There has been an effort to break Hunter — who has been five and a half years sober, even in the face of unrelenting attacks and selective prosecution. In trying to break Hunter, they’ve tried to break me,” the president said.

The pardon is not without precedent. In 2001, President Bill Clinton pardoned his half-brother, Roger Clinton, for a cocaine-related offense committed in 1985. In 2020, President Donald Trump pardoned Charles Kushner, his son-in-law’s father, who was convicted on charges of tax evasion, witness tampering, and illegal campaign contributions.

Biden acknowledged the political ramifications of the pardon but expressed confidence in his decision. “There was no sense in delaying it further,” he said. “I hope Americans will understand why a father and a president would come to this decision.”

The Jigawa State government, under the leadership of Governor Umar Namadi, spent N1.5 billion in three months on constructing and renovating mosques and other religious structures, according to the state’s budget performance report obtained on the state’s website.

The report, titled Jigawa State Third Quarter (July – September) 2024 Budget Performance, was published on the state government’s website. It revealed that N1,040,000,000 was allocated to the construction of mosques and religious structures in 2024, while an additional N458,470,310 was spent on completing ongoing projects in the same category.

Meanwhile, Jigawa State faces a significant educational crisis. Ranked fifth in Nigeria for the highest number of out-of-school children, the state has over 820,000 children aged 3 to 18 not enrolled in school, according to a survey conducted by the Education Sector Support Programme in Nigeria (ESSPIN).

During a recent meeting with the Jigawa State House of Assembly in Kaduna, Mohammed Farah, Chief of UNICEF’s Kano Field Office, revealed that only 16.8% of children in the state are enrolled in school. He further disclosed that 44% of primary school-age children and 52% of secondary school-age children are out of school.

Farah emphasized the dire need to address these gaps, noting the low levels of foundational literacy and numeracy among the state’s children. He urged lawmakers to implement significant reforms before the next Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS), scheduled for 2026/2027, to improve the state’s educational system and secure the fundamental right to basic education for its children.

A coordinated effort by 62 countries has led to the largest drug bust in history, intercepting 1,400 tonnes of narcotics valued at $8.5 billion during a six-week international operation codenamed Operation Orion.

Authorities discovered a new drug trafficking route and seized six semi-submersible vessels, commonly referred to as “narco-subs,” used to smuggle illicit substances. The operation also resulted in over 400 arrests.

The coalition, which included nations such as Colombia, Australia, the United States, and several European countries, collaborated by sharing intelligence and deploying warships and aircraft to combat the narcotics trade.

The intercepted haul included over 1,000 tonnes of marijuana and 225 tonnes of cocaine, setting a world record for a single anti-narcotics operation.

Ejigbo, a historic town in Osun State, Nigeria, stands out as a unique community where two currencies—Nigeria’s Naira and the West African CFA Franc—are widely accepted in its markets. This unusual practice reflects the town’s deep economic and cultural ties with Abidjan, the commercial capital of Ivory Coast.

Residents frequently bring back goods and money from Ivory Coast, making the CFA Franc a practical currency for daily transactions. Market vendors in Ejigbo readily accept both CFA and Naira, ensuring flexibility for locals and visitors alike. Currently, 1,000 CFA exchanges for approximately 2,850 Naira, a significant shift from the days when one Naira equaled three CFA during former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

Beyond currency, the influence of Ivory Coast is deeply ingrained in Ejigbo’s culture. The town has adopted Ivorian traditions, from food to lifestyle. Traditional meals from Abidjan are now commonplace in Ejigbo, and many items in the markets are imported directly from Ivory Coast. This strong cultural and economic connection has made it possible for residents to enjoy the best of both worlds.

Travel between Ejigbo and Abidjan is also a testament to their enduring relationship. The journey costs around 100,000 Naira and typically takes one day under favorable conditions. However, challenges such as immigration processes can extend the trip to three days. Despite this, the bond remains unshaken, with frequent exchanges of people and goods strengthening the ties between the two locations.

For the people of Ejigbo, living between Nigeria and Ivory Coast is not just a possibility—it is their reality. Their ability to seamlessly navigate these two worlds has created a unique cultural identity, where CFA Francs and Naira coexist in their markets and Ivory Coast’s influence shapes their everyday lives.

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has pledged to rally northern lawmakers against President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reform bills, warning that the legislation could devastate the region’s economy.

Speaking in an interview with the BBC, Zulum criticized the rushed nature of the bills, comparing them to previous laws that underwent extensive debates before passage. He expressed concerns that the reforms would impoverish the north while disproportionately benefiting Lagos State.

“These bills, if passed, will lead to poverty, hunger, and hardship in the north,” Zulum said. He reminded the president that northern voters played a significant role in his 2023 election victory. “He should not ignore our concerns and the rumours that the north is not in his favour,” the governor added.

Zulum also cautioned against undue pressure on lawmakers to approve the bills, raising fears of potential political influence or bribery.

“What we fear is that some lawmakers might secretly support the bills, and politicians might bribe or persuade their members to vote for them,” he said. He urged northern lawmakers to remain vigilant and prioritize the region’s interests.

The proposed tax reforms have also faced strong opposition from Senator Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South in the National Assembly. Ndume has consistently voiced his objections, both in public and on the Senate floor, aligning with Zulum’s stance against the legislation.

The tax bills have sparked heated debate across the country, with concerns over their potential economic and political impact. Lawmakers are expected to deliberate on the proposed legislation in the coming weeks.

A boat accident along the Dambo-Ebuchi stretch of the River Niger in Niger State has claimed multiple lives, with over 200 passengers reportedly on board. The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday as the vessel, owned by one Musa Dangana, capsized while en route to the Katcha weekly market.

The passengers, including market women and farm laborers, were thrown into the river when the boat overturned. Local divers have since commenced search and rescue operations, recovering eight bodies so far. Efforts are ongoing to locate the remaining passengers.

Eyewitnesses reported that none of the passengers were wearing life jackets, a factor believed to have contributed to the high number of casualties.

This tragedy follows a similar incident on October 1, 2024, on the Muwo Gbajibo River in Mokwa Local Government Area, where many lives were also lost.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the latest disaster, but an investigation is expected to uncover the cause of the accident. The incident highlights persistent safety concerns surrounding water transportation in the region.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) bid to arraign Alhaji Yahaya Bello, the immediate past Governor of Kogi State, without his legal representation.

Bello faces a 19-count charge related to alleged involvement in an N80.2 billion fraud. The case was set for his plea before Justice Emeka Nwite, but none of his defense lawyers were present in court.

EFCC’s counsel, Mr. Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, argued that Bello’s physical presence was sufficient for the arraignment, even in the absence of his legal team. However, Justice Nwite dismissed the argument, citing a violation of the defendant’s right to fair hearing.

The judge stated that compelling Bello to enter a plea without his defense counsel would be unjust. He stressed that the absence of the legal team resulted from their lack of notice about the case’s schedule.

“It is my view that the interest of justice will be met by putting the defense counsel on notice about this abridgement of time,” Justice Nwite ruled. He added that proceeding without Bello’s lawyers would breach procedural fairness and undermine the integrity of the court process.

The arraignment was adjourned to December 13, 2024, with instructions for a hearing notice to be issued to Bello’s legal team. Meanwhile, the court ordered that Bello remain in EFCC custody until the next court date as investigations into the alleged fraud continue.

The charges against Bello include embezzlement, financial mismanagement, and abuse of office involving the large-scale diversion of state funds during his tenure.

The case has drawn significant public attention due to the scale of the alleged fraud and its potential impact on anti-corruption efforts in Nigeria.

Legal experts and observers have emphasized the importance of upholding justice and fairness in such high-profile cases. The December hearing is expected to be a key moment in the proceedings.

The government of the United Kingdom (UK) has earned over N40 billion processing visas for Nigerian nationals between June 2023 and June 2024.

Marc Owen, director of visa, status, and information services at UK Visas and Immigration, disclosed that at least 225,000 visa applications from Nigeria were processed during the period. He spoke at the launch of Africa’s largest UK Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Lagos.

“In the year to June 2024, we processed more than 225,000 UK visas for Nigerian nationals across all categories, and this new partnership demonstrates our continued commitment to ensuring our visa services are accessible, efficient, and meet the needs of all applicants,” Owen was quoted as saying by the British High Commission in Lagos.

“I’m delighted to be here in person as we celebrate this important moment together with our customers and partners,” he added.

Although Owen did not provide exact figures for visa applications, an analysis based on the UK’s six-month standard visitor fee of $150 and the 225,000 applications cited as the least figure shows the UK generated over $34 million from processing. At an average exchange rate of N1,200 to $1 between June 2023 and June 2024, this amounts to over N40 billion.

Visa application fees are non-refundable, even if the application is unsuccessful.

Earlier in 2024, data from the British government revealed that Nigeria was among five countries with increased study visa rejection rates in the second half of 2023.

In Q4 2022, one in 31 Nigerian applications was rejected, while in Q4 2023, the rejection rate rose to one in eight. Other countries with high rejection rates included Vietnam, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia, though at smaller volumes.

India recorded higher declined application numbers than Nigeria. For Nigerians, study visa issuances dropped by 63 percent compared to the final three months of 2022.

The increase in rejections coincided with stricter UK immigration policies, including changes to dependent visa rules and adjustments to the graduate route post-study work visa, which fueled negative sentiments in both countries.

As UK visa restrictions tightened, many Nigerians turned to the United States for opportunities.

During the 2023/2024 academic year, Nigeria ranked as the seventh largest source of international students globally and the highest in Africa, with 20,029 students enrolled in the US. This represented a 13.5 percent increase compared to the previous year.
