FG flags off commencement of Airborne Geophysical Survey Aircraft

by Folarin Kehinde September 2, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Government, Thursday, flagged off the commencement of the airborne geophysical survey to determine accurate mineral deposits, with activities occurring in 19 states of the federation.

Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Olamilekan Adegbite, flagged off the event in Abuja, stating that there are only two aircrafts available for the survey, noting that the importance of the survey is to gather data through geophysical measurement that will locate mineral deposits.

He however allayed fears of residents over frequent aircraft movement in the 19 states, stating that the Ministry has been sensitizing the general public on the awareness of the aircrafts, explaining that the National Security Agency, NSA, has been briefed about the aircrafts movements.

According to him, “To allay peoples fear in the last three months, we have been going round the states, sensitizing people on the awareness of the aircraft. The data gathered will enhance our ability to know what minerals that we have and thereby attract the right investors in the sector.

“The aircrafts will be flying on an altitude of 50 meters, extensive awareness has been done in all means of communication to avoid panic. As at yesterday, I briefed the President at the FEC, so he is already aware of what is going on, we have permission from NSA with the knowledge of the Chief of Air Staff, the aircrafts will not expose the country to security threats.

“We have two aircraft on ground I think they will boost that up eventually to four. This project was scheduled to take off last year because it is best done in the dry season. Now, two aircraft are here they are starting now, they are going to work as the weather dictates, they work when it is dry, we are going to the dry season soon, work would be easier.”

Fielding questions from journalists, John Eyre, International Technical Adviser for Xcalibur Multiphysics, said “There are two aircrafts which will fly a lower altitude of 50 meters with a single pilot. It is equipped with electronic sensors.

“We have tried this in South Africa, Spain, Togo and so many other countries. We are looking at signatures of all minerals, particularly gold, lead, zinc, silver, bitumen with all metallic and non-metallic minerals, we will start on the location with dry land.”

After Sacking Two Ministers, Buhari Tells Others to Expect More

by Folarin Kehinde September 1, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Muhammadu Buhari has told his cabinet members to expect more termination letters in the coming months as his administration goes into “its critical phase” in the second term.

Buhari stated this shortly before announcing the sacking of the Minister of Agriculture, Mohammed Sabo Nanono, and his power counterpart, Mamman Saleh.

Their sacking, according to the president, would mark the “beginning of a continuous process”.

Nanono and Saleh were among 44 ministers sworn in by the president on November 11, 2019.

According to report, President Buhari had told the ministers that he would give them “implementation targets” that must be archived and which would be reviewed from time to time.

The president had vowed to ensure that every minister in his second cabinet delivered on the specific targets attached to their portfolios.

“The incoming Ministers, who will be sworn in next week, will receive clear implementation targets tied to their portfolios. We will ensure these targets are complied with; performance will be monitored by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation,” the president had said in tweet on August 14, 2019.

In what could be termed a promise kept, Buhari announced Nanono and Saleh’s exit at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday.

He also announced that, Mohammad Mahmood Abubkakar, Minister of Environment, would take over as the Minister of Agriculture while the Minister of State for Works and Housing, Abubakar Aliyu, will assume office as the new Minister of Power.

Buhari said the move was necessary to “reinvigorate this cabinet in a manner that will deepen its capacity to consolidate legacy achievements.”

He said, “In due course, substantive nominations will be made to fill the consequential vacancies in accordance with the requirements of the constitution.

“I have personally met with the departing members to thank them for their contributions to discussions in cabinet and the invaluable services rendered to the nation. Today, effectively marks their last participation in the Federal Executive Council deliberations and I wish them the best in all future endeavours.”

Buhari added, “I wish to reiterate once more, that this process shall be continuous.”

Breaking: Buhari sacks Power, Agriculture Ministers

by Folarin Kehinde September 1, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

The two cabinet members affected are Saleh Mamman, the minister of power; and Sabo Nanono, the minister of agriculture and rural development.

Femi Adesina, presidential spokesman, announced the termination of their appointment on Wednesday.

As part of the cabinet restructuring, Mohammad Mahmood Abubakar, the minister of environment, is expected to assume office as the minister of agriculture and rural development.
Abubakar Aliyu, the minister of state for works and housing, will take over as the minister of power.

President Buhari is not known for sacking his ministers or rejigging his cabinet until the end of his tenure.

He is the first Nigerian president since 1999 not to have rejigged his cabinet in a four-year tenure.

After his reelection in 2019, he explained why he decided to retain his cabinet ministers in spite of pressure from some quarters to disengage some of them.

“Although we all had a common vision, we frequently had heated debates in this room on the best way to achieve our goals. These differing views are what made the decisions we took all the more rational,” the president had said.

“It is this quality that made me retain my cabinet for the full term. Each of you in this room has a unique skill and strength.

“We are a reflection of the Nigeria we aspire to achieve – A diverse but tolerant nation where no one is silenced and where every opinion should be heard and considered.”

EU, British Council to Train Online Publishers on FOI Act

by Folarin Kehinde September 1, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

No fewer than fifty publishers of online newspapers are expected in Abuja, Thursday for capacity building on the provisions and application of Nigeria’s Freedom of Information Act.

The training is supported by the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (ROLAC) programme, funded by the European Union, but managed by the British Council.

ROLAC’s lead Consultant on the Freedom of Information Act, Dr. Walter Duru, who disclosed this to newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday said the target participants are members of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers-GOCOP and other select online publishers in Nigeria.

Duru, who also chairs the Board of the Freedom of Information Coalition in Nigeria explained that the training is put together to deepen the understanding of publishers on the use and application of the Freedom of Information Act, 2011.

While commending ROLAC for what he described as the programme’s huge investments in transparency initiatives in Nigeria, he lamented the poor use of the act by the citizens, adding that the training is one of the ways of enhancing the capacity of non-state actors, while further spreading the message of the FOI Act.

According to him, “the FOI Act aims to make public records and information more freely available and enables citizens to hold the government accountable in the event of the misappropriation of public funds or failure to deliver public services. Unfortunately, there is an embarrassingly low compliance level with the provisions of the Act in Nigeria among public institutions.”

“On the part of the citizens, there is an abysmally low use of the FOI Act. A recent FOI Implementation Assessment by the Media Initiative against Injustice, Violence and Corruption- MIIVOC, with support from ROLAC showed that the capacity level of non-state actors on the provisions and use of the FOI Act is still very low.”

“Media practitioners are also not taking advantage of the Act to access information that could enhance their profession. This is one of the reasons for this engagement.”

Thursday’s event is supported by the European Union (funded) Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (ROLAC) programme (managed by the British Council), in collaboration with the Media Initiative against Injustice, Violence and Corruption (MIIVOC); Freedom of Information Coalition in Nigeria (FOIC-N) and the FOI Unit of the Federal Ministry of Justice (FMOJ).

COVID-19: Nigerians risk sanctions for refusing vaccine – FG

by Folarin Kehinde September 1, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Government may sanction eligible Nigerians who refuse COVID-19 vaccination.

The Executive Director of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Faisal Shuaib, gave the hint at a press briefing briefing in Abuja on Tuesday.

In Edo and Ondo States, the state governments had already announced restrictions regarding some public places that those who have not taken COVID-19 vaccine cannot have access to.

Shuaib said the government may “apply the basic rule of law” against such people because they will be endangering the lives of other people.

He said, “he Presidential Steering Committee and the Federal Ministry of Health is exploring ways of making vaccines more available to all Nigerians including federal civil servants and corporate entities.

“Once these vaccines are made equitably available to all Nigerians, then we would need to have a frank discussion about justice, fairness and liberty that exist around vaccine hesitancy.

“If some individuals refuse to take the vaccine, hence endangering those who have or those who could not due to medical exemptions, then we have to apply the basic rule of law which stipulates that your human right stops where mine begins.

“So, you have a right to refuse vaccines, but you do not have the right to endanger the health of others.”

Dairy Production: Local Breed Development is Key, not mere Interventions – NIAS

by Folarin Kehinde August 31, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

Kenny Folarin, Abuja

The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian Institute of Animal Science, Prof. Eustace Iyayi has advocated for the development of local dairy breeds that has high milk yeilding capacity potential to boost dairy production in the country and reduce importation.

Iyayi while speaking in Abuja on Tuesday at a press conference noted that if local breeds are not developed, all intervention measures are just mere and will remain without lasting results.

“There is a big shortfall between what is needed in the country and what is produced, we need about 1.6 million metric tonnes of milk and we can only produce about 600 metric tonnes, so the difference has to come in through importation.

“This is huge, though CBN has tried to intervene and of course we know this is going to take a long time to develop because what is happening now is that in most cases, we are just using artificial insemination to upgrade the milk production capacity of local breed in a short run.

“But in a long run, what we have been advocating as an institute is that we need to develop our local breed that has had high milk yielding capacity potential.

“That’s the only way to go, though it can take about 10-15 years down the line but we need to start, if we do not develop our breeds that have high yield, all these intervention measures are just what they are, mere interventions that will not be long lasting so the way out is to have a long reach planning”.

According to Iyayi, the Nigerian Poultry Industry contributes about 25% to the agricultural Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and has the largest annual egg production of 650 metric tonnes and second largest poultry production of 180 million birds in Africa.

He also stated that in order to reduce food import bill, there is need to increase production and improve the agriculture value chain which is about #85 billion that is so underdeveloped and only 6% of the development in the agric value chain is being harnessed while others lack attention.

“The current high annual food import bill of over US$5 billion and US$1.5 billion on dairy product and other derivatives in the face obvious comparative advantage is an unsustainable trend particularly in the wake of dwindling foreign exchange”.

Iyayi explained that “the country has to be aware of this and the institute has been sticking out it’s neck in this direction, “we need to do something busy to reduce our food import bill”.

Meanwhile, Iyayi noted that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the dairy industry has been phenomenal with steep losses reported by farmers, whilst the feed sector has not also been spared as two essential ingredients, maize and soyabean whose cultivation and importation reduced drastically, further compounding the problem of the industry.

Organized Labour Begs FG to Shelve Increase Plan on Electricity, Petrol Price

by Folarin Kehinde August 31, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

The organised labour has appealed to the Federal Government against any plan to increase the price of electricity or petrol to avert crisis in the economy.

Mr Babatunde Olatunji, President, National Union of Chemical, Footwear Rubber Leather and Non-Metallic Product Employees (NUCFRLANMPE), made the appeal at 29th Annual Industrial Relations seminar of the union in Ibadan on Monday.

According to Olatunji, any plan to increase electricity or petrol will be a wrong step and the organised labour will do everything within its capacity to resist it.

He said that currently, power supply in Nigeria stood at 4,000 megawatts for about 200 million population compared to South Africa with 58,000 megawatts and has 50 million population.

”Industrialisation cannot take place in the absence of power. Inadequate infrastructure like bad road network is also a challenge. From the source of raw material to the market areas is dilapidated, the roads network are no longer motorable,” he said.

The NUCFRLANMPE president said that governments at different level needed to make the manufacturing sector to thrive by giving attention to factor that promoted industrialisation.

”Government should ensure adequate power, security of lives and properties as well as regulate multiple taxation and charges to allow manufacturing companies survive, thus promote Gross Domestic Products in the country,” he said.

The labour leader further said that the effect of socio-economic crises and COVID-19 pandemic on industrial relations was evidence in high number of job losses arising from redundancy and factory closure.

He said that the management of some organisation in a bid to maximise profit make staff to work for more than eight hours without overtime payment while many permanent employment are converted to casual.

He urged the management of affected organisations to treat all workers with dignity whether casual or permanent employment and also respect the International Labour Organisation’s law on workers right to form or join a union irrespective of their status.

Mr Femi Oke, Secretary, Chemical and Non-Metallic Product s Employers Federation (CANMPEF), advised the government to prioritise the sale of foreign exchange for manufacturers to boost production.

Oke advised the government to curtail inflation rate, stop multiplicity of levies, prioritise infrastructure and improve security for development of the nation.

He also called for collaboration and communication between employers and employees to ensure the survival of organisation.
