NDLEA Intercept N6bn Drugs for Boko Haram

by Folarin Kehinde September 8, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, said it has intercepted N6bn worth of illicit drugs (Captagon) meant for insurgents.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Agency, Mohamed Buba Marwa, disclosed this during a media briefing on Wednesday.

According to him, several quantities of Captagon, a brand of Amphetamine were intercepted by the Agency at the Apapa port in Lagos.

“Captagon was the name of the drug found on the phone of the French-Tunisian terrorist who killed 84 civilians in France on Bastille Day in 2016. That is the drug we have on our hands now.

“This is the same condition we have presently with insurgents, bandits, cultists, robbers, kidnappers and herders spilling rampaging across the country.

“Given the dark and dangerous background of Captagon, its not difficult to guess correctly that the destination for the seized drug is none other than the camps of insurgents and bandits all over the country,” he said.

Marwa, explained that the agency had received intelligence from its international partners on the shipment of illicit narcotics to Nigeria from the Middle East through the Apapa port in March 2021.

He added that the container passed through three countries and was transloaded in a North African country.

The NDLEA Boss said that with the first attempt to examine the container on Thursday, August 26, 2021, three pieces of marble polishing machines, otherwise called sanders were discovered.

“Further scrutiny on Monday, August 31, with the NDLEA sniffer dogs turned up a positive indication on the rotor coil of one of the three machines. The next day, Wednesday, 1st September, 18,560 tablets of drug suspected to be Amphetamine (Captagon) weighing 3.2kg was found deeply concealed in one of the coils.

“The following day, Thursday, September 2, the other two machines were dismantled, and in all, a total of 451, 807 tablets, weighing 74.119 kilograms, were discovered hidden inside their rotor coils.

“Going by the street value of about $25 per tablet, the importer would have raised $11.3m, which is equivalent to N6bn.”

Marwa noted that this is the first time such drug is being brought into any African country South of the Sahara as its production and sale is controlled by militias and large criminal groups in the Middle East.

Read Also: The cost of toying with insecurity.

“Imagine the impact of this drug in the hands of criminal gangs or a fraction of the profit from its sale being used to fuel criminalities across the country, we can think of our worst-case scenarios and they will still be farther from the repercussions that could be unleashed on the country.

“This tiny, highly addictive pill, widely available across the Middle East, produces a euphoric intensity in users, allowing them to stay awake for days, making them fearless, predisposes them to reckless action that puts the lives of people around them in jeopardy.

“And beyond any doubt, Captagon has been linked to the escalation of the Syrian Civil War. A lot of seizures have been made since 2017, mostly in the Arabian Peninsula, and in Italy and Turkey, and the point of origination, almost all the time, were traced back to Syria and Lebanon.

“This gave rise to the theory that ISIS is behind the production and sale of Captagon as a means of generating funds for weapons and combatants, and for use as a stimulant to keep them fighting.

“If these facts are not grim enough, we should all remember a lesson from history, when in World War Two, Nazi Germany wreaked havoc across Europe with chemically-enhanced soldiers that the combined forces of Europe could not tame,” he said.

He assured Nigerians that the Agency would continue to work hard with support from local and international partners to block availability and access to all manners of illicit substances across the country.

by Folarin Kehinde September 8, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Executive Council has approved the National Policy on Fifth Generation (5G) Networks for Nigeria’s Digital Economy.

The 5G Policy was approved at the Council meeting today, Wednesday, following the presentation by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Ibrahim (Pantami).

According a statement signed by the Technical Assistant on Information Technology to the Minister, Dr Femi Adeluyi, implementation of the National Policy is with immediate effect.

The National Policy has been developed over a period of 2 years, due to the need for extensive stakeholder engagement and the need to ensure adequate public awareness and sensitization.

The stakeholder engagement was thorough and multi-sectoral in nature. It also took into account the report of the 3-month 5G trials that commenced on the 25th of November 2019.

The report critically reviewed and studied the health and security implications of deploying 5G in Nigeria.

Leading international organisations such as the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), an organ of the United Nations, have confirmed that the deployment of 5G networks leave no adverse health effect and are safe.

Experts say 5G networks offer significant advantages over the current technologies.

Some of its advantages include much lower latency, higher bandwidth, greater device density, longer battery life for nodes and greater network flexibility. Several countries have already commenced the deployment of 5G and are enjoying its benefits. These countries include the United States, United Kingdom, Republic of Korea, South Africa and Lesotho, to mention but a few.

The National Frequency Management Council (NFMC), chaired by Minister Pantami, said it will soon release spectrum to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for the Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) that meet all the required conditions.

The NCC, the regulator of the telecommunications sector, has promised to continue to engaging stakeholders with a view to developing the regulatory instruments required for the successful deployment of the technology in Nigeria.

“The solution is that what we need is to bring investment, there are private sector people in Nigeria today, but are afraid to invest there money in the country, so our foreigners are not bringing their money, Nigerians are taking there money out, so how do we give that confidence that will make private sector keep their money in the country”.

Chairman, NESG, Mr. Asua Ighodalo, corroborating, stated that
days of going cap in hand to the federal government for FAAC for funds and fund request are far gone, the resources of the federal government are tight and dwindling, revenues haven’t gone up nationwide, so states has to become ingenious to where they will find revenue and resources.

Ighodalo explained that each state have to start looking inward on areas of comparative advantage and in this circumstances, and should enact laws that will allow them to take advantage of these areas where they have comparative advantage.

He added that states should concentrate on how to encourage investments into their state, make themselves attractive and bank on what they have advantage on and how to make them critically important and positive for their state.

“States can make life easier and reap the benefits of investment, investments now are moving to states that are more investment-attractive”.

Speaking on tax collection, he said “there are certain things we have capacity to do in terms of land laws, multiplicity of taxes, each should make taxe easy for investors in their state, they should centralize tax collection both at the local and state and later distribute accordingly”.

Annie Idibia Slams 2Baba For Allegedly Spending Night With Baby Mama

by Folarin Kehinde September 3, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

Annie Idibia, wife of popular Nigerian music star 2Baba, has expressed anger over his relationship with one of his baby mamas, Pero Adeniyi.

The actress made this known in a post via her Instagram story, where she expressed anger that some of the actions of the singer are bringing public disgrace to her.

Pero is 2Baba’s first baby mama who gave birth to three kids for the music star.

However, Annie lamented that she deserves better from him for always being by his side even when it was glaring that 2Baba’s family never liked her.

“Your baby mamas constantly use your children as an excuse for all sorts of rubbish, ” she said.

She accused 2Baba for sleeping under the same roof with his kids’ mother, Pero Adeniyi, whenever he visits the children.

She went on to call out Tuface’s brother, Hyacinth Idibia, for housing the singer, his kids and Pero under the same roof.

“I’m a patient woman, I’m not a fool innocent. Your family never loved me from the beginning!

“No matter how hard I tried, I was never worthy to them. I have made so many sacrifices for you and all your children and God knows I have tried.

“I try to stay gracious; you are not the first man on the planet to have kids by different women. Everything I do is to show the good human that I am, but today this move you, Efe Frankie and your family took is unacceptable,” she wrote.

The music star, who is a father of seven shares five children from other women and two with his wife, Annie Idibia.

Annie and Pero have been at loggerheads for years. The rift between them could be traced back to 2015 and 2016 when they both called each other out on social media.

Their frosty relationship took a front burner when photos of 2Baba reportedly kissing Pero at the singer’s nightclub back in 2015 broke the Internet.

Reacting on Twitter, Charles Idibia who is a brother to Tuface said the singer is dying slowly because he is unhappy.

He said, “You got married into a family of peace lovers, so peaceful that it is even a family flaw as I have come to realize. Perhaps, this has made you think we are fools but we are not.

“You are bringing up a Disney trip that happens pre-COVID because you somehow cannot totally have your way today like you used to?

“Trying to paint your husband bad publicly because he is a very private person. Is your threat tool a means of gaining control? I thought you were smart or the dealer gave you the wrong dose today?

“Asking your mum who lives in one of the rooms to add more fire to the juju pot would have been a smarter move but as God will have it, you chose today to expose yourself.”

Over 70 Nigerians missed Pilgrimage Due To COVID-19 Test Results

by Folarin Kehinde September 3, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

Over 70 pilgrims have been denied pilgrimage to Jordan due to late release of COVID-19 test results.

This is coming shortly after the National Primary Health Care Development Agency warned that Holy cities such as Saudi Arabia and Jerusalem have made it mandatory for pilgrims to provide proof of vaccination before they can be granted access for pilgrimage.

The Executive Director, Faisal Shuaib on Tuesday had disclosed that many countries have made vaccination a requirement to gain access to their country as the COVID-19 vaccines have become available worldwide.

He said, “I would like to remind all Nigerians that evidence of vaccination against COVID-19 is now mandatory for all pilgrims to the holy cities of Saudi Arabia and Jerusalem.

“I therefore urge adherents of both religions who are planning to perform pilgrimage next year or in the future, to get vaccinated now to avoid any delays.”

However, the Delta State Government on Friday decried the decision of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission to centralise COVID-19 tests for intending pilgrims in the state, as 77 pilgrims from the state were not airlifted.

The State government through the Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu, said that the centralised COVID-19 test as directed by the NCPC had caused untold hardship to the intending pilgrims.

“Because of in the haphazard release of the test results, 77 of them were not airlifted to Jordan.

“It was disappointing for the intending pilgrims especially as the State had accredited centres to carry out the COVID-19 test in the state,” he said.

According to him, a total of 315 Deltans were supposed to have been airlifted to Jordan from the Port Harcourt International Airport.

He said 223 eventually travelled as 15 reportedly tested positive for the virus and 77 could not travel due to late release of their results.

written by Folarin Kehinde

While the country continues to groan under inflation in prices of food stuffs and other essential commodities, sacked Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Alhaji Sabo Nanono allegedly spent 1bn to renovate his office.

The recently furnished office would be best described as a state-of-the-heart studio

Recall that on September 1, 2021, President Muhammadu Buhari announced the sacking of two of his cabinet members.

The affected cabinet members were Saleh Mamman, minister of power, and Sabo Nanono, minister of agriculture and rural development.

Special Adviser to the President on media and publicity, Femi Adesina said the ministers were not removed owing to weak or poor performance but to consolidate on “legacy performance”.

“Matter of fact is that the president said he had reviewed the performance of the cabinet and needed to reinvigorate for the last run. He said he wanted to consolidate on legacy performance and projects,” he said.

“He needed some reinvigoration but he didn’t say anything about weak or poor performance.”

He also noted that the contributions of the two ministers could be considered weak and not in tandem with the goal of his administration.

Adesina said the ministers were not removed owing to weak or poor performance but to consolidate on “legacy performance”.

Mohammad Abubakar, minister of environment, is expected to assume office as the minister of agriculture and rural development, while Abubakar Aliyu, the minister of state for works and housing, will take over as the minister of power.
