Nigerians Groan Helplessly As Food Prices Skyrocket

by Folarin Kehinde June 25, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nelson Uguwagbo, Abuja

The increasing cost of food prices is a source of great concern and anguish to Nigerians. Since 2016, almost all food items have increased by more than 150% of their original costs.

More than before, Nigerians struggle to buy food commodities as the country suffers from inflating food prices. These has made some experts warn about impeding food crisis.

Over half the population are in poverty. Millions of people especially in the northern parts of the country face hunger and food insecurities already.

The United Nations Food agency predicts that more than 19 million people will become food insecure in Nigeria this year.

The increase in cost of food items has made life miserable and difficult for Nigerians especially low income earners, the unemployed and other vulnerable people.

A simple market survey in any store confirms these facts. The price of a ‘derica’ of beans which sold for 250-300 now go for 550-600 naira.

A paint of garri in the East which was sold for N350 is now sold for as high as N800. A tuber of yam is sold for over 1000 naira. A bottle of red oil which once sold for 400 naira now goes for 800 naira while a bottle of groundnut oil which sold for 450 naira now sells for 1000 naira.

Even sachet milk and Milo which sold for 50 naira now sells at 80 and 70 naira respectively.

This relentless upward movement in food prices is biting hard for poor families in the rural areas in Nigeria. It is a source of concern and misery for many people.

LEADING REPORTERS in an exclusive interview with a trader Faith Omoerah popularly known as ‘Aunty Faith’ a local fast food restaurant owner in my area about her thoughts on the situation and how the increasing food prices is affecting her business.

Explaining, Faith said ‘Everyday, when i go to the market to buy food items, the price seems to increase. Beans and rice that I use to buy cheap before has now double in price. They said a bag of rice is now 26,000 naira.’

‘For me to make profits in my business I now have to increase the price of a plate of food. However my customers are complaining bitterly.

They don’t know that my profits from the business is very small as most of it goes into buying ingredients to make the food’.

Another neighbor of mine whom I spoke to about the situation is Mr Augustine Oparah.

Augustine Oparah, a plumber narrating her ordeal said that the high of cost of food has now made him only eat twice a day.

According to Augustine, ‘Food cost is very high now, I can only afford to eat twice a day now. Most times my morning food is 200 naira potatoes. It’s only in the night I then eat a good food.’

‘it’s only a rich man that can afford to eat three times a day in our country now ‘ he expressed.

The combinations of reasons has led to this increase in the cost of food items. They include: increased cost in transporting foods from the farms to the various markets nationwide, attack on farmers and destruction of farm produce by terrorist including the ongoing farmers-herders crisis.

Also, bizarre economic policies like blocking of land borders and banning of the importation of some food products and the devaluation of the naira against the dollar have contributed to the hike in food prices.

Monica Ayuba a trader stated that whenever they go to buy food items from wholesale sellers and they ask why the price has suddenly increased, the sellers tell them that it is because dollar price has increased thus affecting the cost of importation and custom clearance.

The consequences of this increased food costs is visible in every nook and cranny of the country. People now starve or beg for food. Malnutrition can be observed amongst children because their parents cannot afford the necessary diets to feed them.

Also crime rate is on the increase as individuals have resorted to stealing and other crimes to make ends meet.

A lot of people have pleaded with the government to declare a ‘food emergency’ and take all the actions necessary to mitigate and lower the cost of food items.

How Forex Trading Can Make or Mar Your Finances

by Folarin Kehinde June 24, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nelson Ugwuagbo, Abuja

According to the National Bereau of Statistics, Nigeria has an unemployment rate of 33% and youth unemployment of 42.5%. Also 4 in 10 Nigerians are said to live in poverty.

This high rate of joblessness and poverty has led many Nigerians to seek alternative means of making money.

This search has thus led to an increased interest by Nigerians in forex Trading.

FOREX TRADING is the buying or exchanging of one currency with another. Forex is normally traded in pairs e.g Eur/Usd where one currency is being sold while the other is bought.

Foreign exchange occurs globally and it is the mechanism that facilitates international trade and commerce.

“If a Nigerian wants to a shoe that is produced in the United States, he or she must first convert their naira to dollars before that trade can occur”.

Forex is traded on a global exchange market. It is open 24 hours a day and five days a week, although offline forex exchange happens 24/7 statistics shows that the forex market processes transaction of $6.6 trillion daily.

Previously, forex could only be traded by governments, banks and big institutions but since the advent of the Internet, individuals can now trade forex electronically over the counter.

The recent rise in forex trading interest among Nigerians begs the question of what the advantages and disadvantages of forex trading are?

The various pro’s and cons of trading forex for Nigerians is discussed below

The advantages include

1) Curbing Unemployment: The barrier of entry to start trading forex is low hence anyone can become a forex trader. This is therefore a means for people to keep themselves gainfully employed. The potential to make desirable profits also encourages an individual to put in enough hours in learning all the nitty gritty of the process.
All these activities help rid an individual of idleness and unemployment.

2) Potential for huge income:
People buy and sell currencies worth more than 6.6 trillion dollars daily on the forex market. Good positioning and making the right market decisions can make an individual huge profits. Although the forex market is hugely volatile, it is this volatility that enables experienced traders to gather huge profits from the market.

Forex trading is done 24 hours a day therefore money can be made at any hour.

In addition, trading the currencies directly is not the only means to make money as individuals can also become brokers, forex tutors, financial advisers, or forex software developers. The opportunities to make money is therefore limitless.

3) Hedge against inflation and naira devaluation: Forex can help mitigate the negative effects of inflation and naira devaluation in Nigeria. Since 2015, price of goods have increased by 20% per annum and the naira has lost over 500% of it’s value to the dollar.

With forex, one can buy a stable currency like the dollar, pounds or Euro and hold it till it appreciates against the naira. They can then sell the currency and make huge profits. This is know as long term trading.

As with most things in life, whatever has an advantage also has a disadvantages. The disadvantages of forex trading in Nigeria includes:

1)High Chance of loosing money: The forex market is very volatile and liquidation can occur in seconds. This is not helped by the fact that most forex brokers offer huge leverage that increases your chance of profits or looses exponentially.

The forex market is volatile because of changing conditions and events throughout the world. A forex trader who is not alert can lose all their money in seconds.

2) Scam Prone: while forex trading is in itself a legitimate business, a lot of sham platforms have come out to lure unsuspecting Nigerians into depositing their money with them.

After these deposits, those scam platforms make it impossible to withdraw both your initial capital and/or profits by using sham terms and conditions.

Some even go as far as closing down and running away with the money of their clients.

Also, many Ponzi investment schemes claim to trade forex as their source of revenue. These Ponzi owners offer high ROI to Nigerians but immediately shut down when they are unable to meet such targets.

3) Difficulty to Master: Difficulty to Master:
Forex trading involves learning a wide range of things which includes: world events, macroeconomics, how countries relate with each other, fundamental and technical analysis amongst others. In other to become profitable, a forex trader must learn and master all these complex subjects.

The technical knowledge involved in forex trading is so steep that most people give up after months without making any money.

In conclusion, forex trading presents an opportunity for the average person to make money. It has low barriers of entry and can be done at anytime.

However, those interested in becoming forex traders must be mindful of the disadvantages in other not to be caught unprepared.

Finally it is important for forex traders to adhere to this age long advice, “only trade or invest what you are able to lose”.

We can’t remove Fuel Subsidy – President Buhari

by Folarin Kehinde June 22, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

In a Bloomberg interview yesterday, president Buhari defended the federal governments decision to keep paying subsidy.

The president remarked that the persistent calls on Nigeria by the international monetary fund (IMF) and the world bank was untenable.

In his words, president Buhari said that “Most Western countries are today implementing fuel subsidies. Why would we remove ours now? What is good for the geese is good for the gander.”

“What our Western allies are learning the hard way is that what looks good on paper and the human consequences are two different things.

My government set in motion plans to remove the subsidy last year, but after further consultation with stakeholders and as events unfolded this year, such a move has become increasingly untenable.”

“Boosting internal production for refined products will help. Capacity is due to increase later this year and next as private players and modular refineries e.g Dangote refineries, BUA group refineries and Walter Smith refineries etc come on board.

The exchange rate is also susceptible to external shocks that can suddenly and severely affect Nigerian citizens.

As we stop up domestic production both in fuel and food, the inflationary threat will diminish and we can move towards unification”.

Stop Using Transformer Oil for Cooking, Expert Warns

by Folarin Kehinde June 21, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Experts have warned against the use of transformer oil for frying bean cakes also known as ‘akara’ or for cooking domestic meals.

Transformer oils, which contains polychlorinated biphenyls, are described as tasteless, odourless, and fire-resisting insulating liquid with high boiling point and range in consistency from an oil to a waxy solid.

Chemically known as polychlorinated biphenyls, the oil is called transformer oil as it is used for electrical transformers because it is stable at high temperatures and has excellent electrical insulating properties.

The experts spoke in Calabar, the Cross River capital, on Tuesday on the sidelines of a training and capacity building workshop for state counsel, regulatory officers, power operators and custom officers.

The event, which discussed regulations and guidelines for environmentally sound management of PCBs, was organised by the Federal Ministry of Environment and the United Nations Development Programmes.

A facilitator and consultant to the Federal Government, Prof Babajide Alo, who spoke on the danger PCBs poses to the environment and human health, said the workshop was to sensitise stakeholders on the danger of PCBs, adding that PCBs are imported and blocking their importation was a way to control their use and protect the environment as there are alternatives to PCBs.

A project coordinator, Olusanya Olubunmi said, “Although PCBs have a long history of useful applications in many facets of human endeavours, such as in power sector, as a coolant and dielectric fluid in electrical equipment, studies have shown that PCBs portend deleterious effects on the environment and human health, hence the global action on its control.”

Another facilitator, Dr Toyin Adejonwo-Osho also disclosed that its use for cooking causes cancer and birth defects and PCBs oils should not be used as hair sheen.

State Government Hindering our Water and Sanitation Hygiene Project – FG

by Folarin Kehinde June 21, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman Adamu has expressed concern over refusal of state government to key into the Water and Sanitation Hygiene Program (WASH) despite incentives and investments initiatives of the federal government.

Suleiman while speaking in Abuja on Tuesday at the Launch of 2021 Water, Sanitation and Hygiene National Outcome Routine Mapping (WASH NORM) III report.

“You’ve had in my speech mentioning that regardless of the incentives and investments and initiatives of the federal government, if states government do not key into this program, it is not going to happen”.

He explained that the entire wash sector will not be able to meet the sustainable development goals without a concerted effort by the state government to commensurate government effort at the federal level.

“what we are supposed to be doing is to provide the leadership, provide the guidance, provide the policies, but the real work is in the states and the local government and if you’re not getting that faction from that end then whatever we are doing is in vain”.

“So our focus will continue to be to support the states to encourage them. We have come with so many incentives, WASH partners for expanding water sanitation and hygiene, we care with the clean Nigeria campaign which is in line national WASH action plan and the declaration of state of emergency on the wash sector”.

Meanwhile, Suleiman noted that the ministry will focus a lot more also on the federal capital territory, as a federal government, so that we can make such a model.

“So what we are trying to do now, also we have changed our strategy a little bit, we are going to focus a lot more also on the federal capital territory, which is our territory as the federal government, so that we can make it a model”

“The entire wash sector will not be able to meet the sustainable development goals without a concerted effort by the state government to commensurate the effort we are making at the federal level, after all the population are in the states they are not in Abuja”.

Suleiman further stated that the WASH NORM III which focuses on data and survey, indicates that the urban utility component of the survey was retooled to effectively respond to SDGs and to attain such, attention must be paid to the systems and structures around urban water utilities across the country.
