BREAKING: Niger’s military rulers arrest 180 from former gov

by Folarin Kehinde August 1, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The new military rulers of Niger, who took over the government in a coup a few days ago, have detained at least one hundred and eighty (180) members of the ousted democratically elected administration, the previous ruling party said on Monday.

The president of the Nigerien Party for Democracy and Socialism, Foumakoye Gado, Mines Minister, Ousseini Hadizatou and the Energy Minister, Mahamane Sani Mahamadou were among those detained, the party’s spokesman, Hamid N’Gadé said.

N’Gadé added that Transport Minister, Oumarou Malam Alma and his deputy, Kalla Moutari, including Interior Minister, Hama Adamou Souley were also detained by the coup plotters, NAN reports.

The “abusive arrests” were evidence of “the repressive, dictatorial and unlawful behaviour” of the military, N’Gadé said.

On Wednesday, officers from General Omar Tchiani’s elite unit declared Niger’s democratically elected president Mohamed Bazoum, of the PNDS, out of power. Tchiani later appointed himself as the new ruler on Friday.

Shortly afterwards, the coup plotters suspended the West African country’s constitution and dissolved all constitutional institutions. The coup has been internationally condemned.

The West African community of states ECOWAS issued an ultimatum to the coup leaders on Sunday saying that if Bazoum was not released and reinstated within a week, ECOWAS would take measures that could include the use of force.

On Monday, the military governments of neighbouring Burkina Faso and Mali warned ECOWAS against intervening.

Any military intervention against Niger would be equal to a declaration of war against Burkina Faso and Mali, a joint statement by the two transitional governments said.

Lassie Foundation Drums Support for Quality Education, Healthcare Services for the Girl-Child

by Folarin Kehinde July 28, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

In a bid to ensure the realization of the Sustainable Development Goal 4 on Universal primary and secondary education for all, Lassie Foundation, a non-governmental organization has advocated for support the girl-child in the country.

The Convener, Barrister Pamela Ozigbo while speaking recently at an outreach at Kuchingoro Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) Camp in Abuja stated that government and stakeholders need to ensure that every girl-child have access to education and basic health services in the country.

Ozigbo who lamented the increase in gender based violence in the country, said her organisation over the years have been in the forefront, advocating for the rights of the girl-child, hence every girl-child deserves their rightful place in the society.

She however opined that high representation of women at the National Assembly would help mitigate the effects and many challenges of the girl-child hence enjoined participation of more women in politics and be a voice for the girl-child.

Meanwhile Barrister Ozigbu stated that the foundation has adequate plans to drastically reduce the number of girls on the streets .

Her words:

“At lassie foundation one of our core projects for this year is to reduce the number of disadvantaged girl-child on the streets, by doing this, we’ll be able to empower them with desired skills”.

Corroborating, an associates of the foundation and founder, Star Crest for Women in Africa Foundation, Barrister Esther Omenka stated that women are always marginalized in Africa considering the patriarchal mentality that it’s a man’s world.

Omenka lamented that women are not given enough opportunities and privileges stated that her NGO is fully committed to bridging the gap.

Her words:

“My NGO is about the empowerment so for underprivileged women or children across the African continent, and we can’t do that without including girl child in our scope.

“We have organized several Back to School programs for the underprivileged African child because we believe that every child, every African child deserves to go to school and have basic universal education,”.

BREAKING: Police Withdraw Officers Attached To Buhari’s Wife, Brother, Others

by Folarin Kehinde July 17, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) has withdrawn the Police Mobile Force (PMF) personnel previously attached to prominent individuals, including Mrs Aisha Buhari, wife of former President Muhammadu Buhari, and his brother, Mallam Mamman Daura.

Other personalities affected by the withdrawal include Boss Mustapha, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and Iyorchia Ayu, a former Senate President.

The order for this withdrawal was contained in a Police Wireless Message obtained by Channels Television on Monday.

According to the authorities, this move comes as part of an ongoing reassessment and reorganization of security details by the Nigerian Police Force. The decision aims to optimize the deployment of police personnel and ensure the effective use of resources in line with prevailing security challenges in the country.

The withdrawal of PMF personnel from these high-profile individuals is not indicative of any specific threat or security breach. Instead, it aligns with the broader goal of streamlining security arrangements to meet the evolving security needs of the nation.

While the affected individuals may no longer have PMF personnel assigned exclusively to their protection, it is important to note that they will still benefit from other security arrangements provided by relevant agencies.

Tope Alabi Defends Ifa Slang, ‘Aboru Aboye’ With Bible Reference

by Folarin Kehinde July 11, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Fast rising Nigerian gospel singer, Tope Alabi has supported her claim with biblical reference after using ifa initiates slang ‘Aboru Aboye’, in one of her recent ministration.

It would be recall Alabi in a recent video referred to herself as ‘ebo’ literally meaning sacrifice, while also singing the words, “Abiye ni mi, Oruko mi ni yen. Mo de bo, mo ru, mo ye,” (I am a sacrifice, that’s my name. I am a sacrifice accepted by God, that’s my name).

The lyrics had since triggered a flurry of reactions in the media space as her fans and some Christian leaders took sides over her choice of words.

Meanwhile, Alabi who explained with bible reference also clarified that her deft use of the language remained her peculiar style as a gospel artiste.

Her words:

“It was recorded that David made a sacrifice of faithfulness to God. Why was the word sacrifice not written as the same English word in the Yoruba version of the Bible? It is a Yoruba language. There is no special language for traditionalists. We are all speaking the Yoruba language.

“If some people say they want to use the language in their own style, it is not bad. We have also decided to use it in our own style.”

In establishing her points with specific reference to a bible passage which is Romans 12:1, she said, “Brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. The word ‘acceptable’ is the ‘Aboru’ while ‘living sacrifice’ is Aboye.”

Ignore Satanic Rumours, Governor Akeredolu is Alive, APC Chieftain

by Folarin Kehinde June 29, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo, Olusola Oke has called on the people of the state to continue to pray for the ailing Governor Rotimi Akeredolu and ignore satanic rumours of death.

Recall that Akeredolu proceeded on medical leave, had handed over to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, to act as the governor till he returns.

However, reports had surfaced on social media claiming that the governor had passed away but the reports had been found to be fake as the governor’s aides had refuted, saying the governor is still alive.

Meanwhile Oke, in a statement entitled “Stop this satanic verse” issued, Thursday, described the various reports about the governor as satanic and warned those behind them to stop the rumours.

His words:

“The orchestrated rumour of the death of Governor Akeredolu by some political profiteers have become a grave concern to me and men and women of good conscience in Ondo state. In the past, I have ignored the tune as a mere political adventure but the latest version of the woven wicked rumours from their mill is satanic and totally inhuman.
