by Folarin Kehinde September 20, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Kano has declared Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress, APC, winner of the Kano governorship election.

The tribunal gave the final judgement after cancelling some votes recorded by the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, candidate and Kano Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The Presiding Judge, Justice Oluyemi Akintan Osadabey said the margin of votes scored by the NNPP was not enough to give Governor Yusuf victory.

It said some of the votes credited to Yusus were invalid.

APC’s Gawuna won all the three grounds presented before the tribunal which include over voting, invalid votes and not being a member of the party as at the time of the NNPP primary election.

The Tribunal ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to retrieve the Certificate of Return issued to Yusuf and give same to Gawuna as the original winner of the election.

She declared that the position of the law states that one most be a bonafide member of a political party before he was allowed to contest an elections, while in the case of Abba Kabir Yusuf he wasn’t a member of NNPP 30 stipulated dates before the conduct of the general elections.

After the deduction of votes, Gawuna was declared winner with 897,000 votes, while Abba got 850,000 votes.

Benue Governor approves monthly allowances of N103,000 for Benue medical students

by Folarin Kehinde September 18, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has reestablished the bonding agreement for medical students at the College of Health Sciences, Benue State University.

This was revealed during the 9th Professional Induction and Admission Ceremony for the 2023 Graduating Doctors of the college, held in Makurdi on Monday.

Under this renewed bonding arrangement, the state government is committed to providing monthly allowances of ₦103,000 to all medical students at the institution until their graduation.

However, this comes with a condition that they must serve the state for a mandatory period of not less than two years before deciding on their future engagements.

Originally introduced during the administration of Gabriel Suswam, the bonding agreement had been discontinued during Samuel Ortom’s government.

This discontinuation led to a constant exodus of graduates seeking better opportunities outside the state.

Governor Alia, while making the announcement, encouraged medical professionals from Benue who had left the state in search of better prospects to return, assuring them of improved opportunities within Benue. He emphasized his commitment to supporting the state-owned university and achieving the clear objectives of his administration’s policy statements.

He applauded the foresight and dedication of the founding fathers and staff of the university’s Medical School, acknowledging their resilience in building the institution from its foundation to its present status despite numerous challenges.

Governor Alia commended the medical graduates of the institution for their remarkable contributions to the healthcare sector worldwide.

He announced an increase in the admission quota for the MBBS program from 75 to 150 students, accrediting this to the institution’s outstanding medical facilities and the high-quality doctors it produces.

US Loses $80 Million F-35 Fighter Jet

by Folarin Kehinde September 18, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The US military has asked for the public’s help to locate one of its $100m (£80m) F-35B fighter jets after the pilot ejected from the aircraft.

It went missing on Sunday afternoon when the pilot was flying over the southern state of South Carolina.

The pilot, who has not been named, ejected and parachuted safely. He is in a stable condition in hospital.

Officials said the aircraft was involved in a “mishap” but did not offer details of what that was.

It was left in autopilot mode when the pilot ejected, a spokesman at Joint Base Charleston told NBC News, adding that it may have been airborne for some time.

Officials said they were focusing their searches around Lake Moultrie and Lake Marion, north of the city of Charleston.

The search area was based on the jet’s last known location.

Nancy Mace, a Republican congresswoman for South Carolina, asked on X, formerly Twitter: “How in the hell do you lose an F-35?

“How is there not a tracking device and we’re asking the public to what, find a jet and turn it in?”

The aircraft is a stealth jet – meaning its airframe, sensors and systems are designed to operate undetected by enemy radar.

Joint Base Charleston posted its appeal for help on X. “Emergency response teams are still trying to locate the F-35,” it said.

“The public is asked to co-operate with military and civilian authorities as the effort continues.”

It encouraged anyone with information that could help its recovery teams to contact its operations centre.

Flight tracker Flightradar24 posted an image on X showing several aircraft scouring the area.

The Marine Corps said in a statement to the BBC its knowledge of the incident was “limited” at the moment, it was still trying to gather more information.

It added that the mishap would be “under investigation”.

The jet costs around $100m, its manufacturer Lockheed Martin told the BBC.

A second F-35 flying at the same time returned safely to base, military spokeswoman Maj Melanie Salinas told Associated Press.

In 2018, the US military temporarily grounded its entire fleet of F-35 jets after a crash in South Carolina.

BREAKING: Cult clash leaves 20 dead in Sagamu

by Folarin Kehinde September 18, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

At least 20 young men were said to have been killed by cultists in Sagamu, the headquarters of Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State.

DAILY POST reports that the cultists of the Eiye and Aiye confraternities resumed their usual supremacy battle on Saturday.

Since then, the cultists have gruesomely killed about 20 young boys, including secondary school pupils.

In gory videos and photos shared online by residents, some of the victims of the attacks were seen lying in the pool of their blood, with one of their hands cut off by their assailants.

The Nigeria Police Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, has reacted to the cult killings in Sagamu.

Adejobi, on his X handle, said the situation in Sagamu goes beyond the deployment of an anti-cultism squad only, saying all hands must be on deck.

“Sagamu case goes beyond the mere anti cultism squad. The elders know how to handle them. The politicians know what to do. I was in their midst in Sagamu between 2006 and 2008. But no single cult clash before I left in 2008. I worked then with the late Akarigbo, Oba Michael Sonariwo and others,” he said.

The Force PRO added that the Ogun State Commissioner of Police should look inward and take action on the report by some residents that the cultists are well known to security agents.

“I will engage the CP on this. Whoever is dealing with cultists and criminals must not compromise. That person must stand firm, and operate against all odds.”

Adejobi added, “Most of those who cause this wahala (problem) in Sagamu are not even Sagamites. At times, they come from Ijebu Ode or Ago Iwoye to strike and move. In some cases, they come as far as Edo State. It’s a problem that the whole system must tackle, not only the security forces. It requires multi-track diplomacy.

by Folarin Kehinde September 18, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The breakdown of relations between Edo state governor, Godwin Obaseki and his deputy, Philip Shaibu, took a new turn on Monday, September 18, with the governor’s decision to bar his estranged deputy from the Government House.

When Shaibu arrived a his office on Monday morning, he saw that the gate to the deputy governor’s office at Dennis Osadebey Avenue and the main door leading to the storey building were both secured with chains and hefty padlocks.

He and his aides waited for about an hour before leaving. Shaibu, during that period reportedly made frantic phone calls to his principal, Governor Obaseki but to no avail.

An assistant to the deputy governor who made the pictures available to the public anonymously disclosed that his principal had some discussions with the Commissioner of Police and the Director of State Services, informing them of how he was locked out of his office.

According to him, there was no official communication to the effect that the deputy governor’s office had been locked.

Shaibu was consequently said to have summoned the Camp Commandant at the Government House, SP Ibrahim Babatunde, questioning why he was locked out of his office.

“He said it was a directive from above adding that the CSO in government house, Wabba will be in a better position to explain”, the aide said.

Shaibu was said to have put calls to Wabba Williams who promised to come to the scene, but never came all through the period Shaibu waited.
