15 EndSARS Protesters Still Detained In Lagos Prisons 3 Years After – Amnesty International Reveals

by Folarin Kehinde October 20, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Amnesty International has revealed that some protesters arrested during the #EndSARS protest of 2020 are still being arbitrarily detained three years later. It said 15 of the arrested protesters are still in custody.

The international organisation on Friday said in a statement on its website that the majority of the protesters are in Kirikiri Medium Correctional Centre and Ikoyi Medium Security Correctional Centre in Lagos without trial.

The organisation also accused the authorities of filing trumped-up charges including theft, arson, possession of unlawful firearms, and murder against many of the protesters

Our investigation shows the Nigerian authorities’ utter disdain for human rights. Three years in detention without trial is a travesty of justice. This shows the authorities’ contempt for due process of law. The protesters must be immediately and unconditionally released,” said Isa Sanusi Director of Amnesty International Nigeria.

It listed seven #EndSARS protesters, Daniel Joy-Igbo, Sodiq Adigun, Sunday Okoro, Olumide Fatai, Oluwole Isa, Shehu Anas, and Akiniran Oyetakin to have been arbitrarily held in Kirikiri Medium Correctional Centre

DSS recovers over N580 million from former EFCC chairman Bawa

by Folarin Kehinde October 20, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nigeria’s secret police, the Department of State Services (DSS), has reportedly recovered over N580 million from former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa.

Leading reporters gathered that Bawa has been in DSS custody since June 2023.

Sources say that the former EFCC chairman has coughed up over N580 million illegally acquired during his time as the head of the agency.

“Over N580 million has been retrieved from the incarcerated former chairman of the anti-graft agency, EFCC,” one of the sources told SaharaReporters.

This comes amid pressure on the DSS to either release Bawa or charge him with offences the secret police’s investigation has found that Bawa committed.

President Bola Tinubu suspended Bawa indefinitely as the chairman of the EFCC in June “to allow for proper investigation into his conduct while in office” following “weighty allegation of abuse of office leveled against him”.

Bawa was taken into custody by the DSS on June 14 hours after his suspension by the president and has since remained in detention.

In August, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) threatened to sue President Tinubu’s administration over the continued detention of Bawa by the DSS without arraignment for proper charges.

Similarly, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, knocked President Tinubu’s administration over the continued detention of Bawa and the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, without trial.

Nigerian ambassador to Morocco confirmed dead

by Folarin Kehinde October 20, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigerian ambassador to Morocco, Alhaji Mansur Nuhu Bamalli, has been confirmed dead.

Until his passing, Bamalli was also the Magajin Garin Zazzau and biological younger brother to the Emir of Zazzau.

A statement by the Media and Publicity officer of the Zazzau emirate council said Mansur Nuhu Bamalli died at a private Hospital in Lagos while on transit to Morocco.

The statement added that “funeral prayers will be announced later.”

He is survived by a wife and 2 children. Ex-President Muhammadu Buhari had appointed the deceased a year ago.

In a letter dated October 7 and signed by the then Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, he had said the appointment was in recognition of the decades of your meritorious service to our fatherland in the Nigerian Foreign Service.

“You shall be invited in due course for the ceremony of investiture. Please, accept my warm felicitations and those of the Honourable Minister of State, the Permanent Secretary and the entire staff of the Ministry,” the letter read.

Before his appointment he was a deputy director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Foreign Affairs Ministry had issued a notice for the recall of Nigeria’s ambassadors, both career and non-career envoys across 300 foreign missions worldwide, but the diplomats are yet to return to the country owing to logistics, including Authority to incur Expenditures (AIEs) for passages.

AIEs are the details of the entitlement of each envoy in terms of their passages and other travel arrangements to return to Nigeria.

BREAKING: Israel withdraws diplomats from Turkey, asks citizens to leave

by Folarin Kehinde October 19, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Israel withdrew all of its diplomats from Turkey on Thursday, including Ambassador Irit Lillian, days after raising its travel advisory to its highest level.

Israel’s National Security Council (NSC) warned against travelling to Turkey on Tuesday, citing fears that Israeli travellers might be targeted.

It urged all Israeli citizens in Turkey to leave as soon as possible after raising its travel advisory to its highest level, four.

The diplomats left on Thursday due to security concerns and not because of a diplomatic crisis between the two countries.

One source said that the Israeli NSC advisory didn’t differentiate the diplomats from ordinary Israeli nationals and had called on all Israelis to leave.

Tuesday’s NSC advised Israelis to exercise all necessary precautions, such as minimising their presence in public spaces and avoiding gatherings.

Demonstrations have gripped Istanbul and Ankara recently, with rallies outside Israel’s missions in both cities after 13 days of punishing air strikes on Gaza, a tiny enclave home to more than 2.3 million Palestinians.

Israel began bombing Gaza on 7 October when Palestinian fighters launched a surprise assault on Israel, which killed more than 1,400 people.

Retaliatory Israeli air strikes have killed over 3,500 Palestinians, including 1,500 children and 1,000 women. Around one million people have been displaced and forced to shelter in hospitals and schools as Israel tightens its siege of the enclave.

Since the conflict erupted, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has repeatedly offered to play middleman and help negotiate an end to the hostilities.

Homosexuality: Reps call for ban of children book, Queen Primer

by Folarin Kehinde October 19, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The House of Representatives has asked all tiers of government to ban a popular children’s book, Queen Premier, due to its content.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion moved by Sulaiman Gumi, on the floor of the House on Thursday.

Moving the motion, Gumi said the book contains words like “gay” and “eros”, which according to the lawmakers, are words that are introducing “gay and lesbians” to children.

He said there is a “high influx of foreign educational materials introduced in nursery and primary schools in Nigeria which tend to teach and promote certain morals that are alien and inimical to our cherished norms and values.”

Speaking in support of the motion, Bello el-Rufai said he had to withdraw his children from a popular school in Abuja because of the words.

He said that despite living in the United States for years, he was able to remain “upright” because of his religious background.

Consequently, the House resolved to ban the book and other similar books that encourage pervasive culture.

The house also resolved that using such books is criminal.

Witches and Wizards not responsible for road accidents – FRSC tells Nigerians

by Folarin Kehinde October 19, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Thursday, said that witches were not responsible for road traffic crashes in Nigeria but recklessness of road users.

This was disclosed by SC Istifanus Ibrahim, Sector Commander, Cross River Sector Command of FRSC during the flag-off of 2023 Ember Month Safety Campaign.

NAN reports that the theme of the campaign for 2023 was: “speed thrills but it kills, drive responsibly and avoid overloading”.

Ibrahim said the last four months of the year were characterised by increased vehicular and socioeconomic activities, hence, commercial drivers respond to the period by trying to make more money.

He said the Ember months were like every other month of the year, but road traffic crashes increased during the period due to the tendency of motorists to drive at excessive speed, while neglecting regulations.

“I wish to also use this opportunity to disabuse our minds from the belief that evil spirits are responsible for the increased crashes during this period of the year.

“This is unscientific, as crashes are caused by human, mechanical and environmental factors.

“Therefore, the essence of the Ember months campaign is to compliment other mechanisms that have been deployed to stamp-out overloading, speed and other attitudes that can hinder our goal of five per cent reduction of road traffic deaths and injuries,” he said.

On his part, Gov. Bassey Otu, who flagged off the campaign said speed was often exhilarating, but it came with a significant risk when it was not managed responsibly.
