written by Folarin Kehinde

Fidelity Bank Plc’s leadership in the exports space has once again been reaffirmed with the bank’s emergence as the Export Finance Bank of the Year at the BusinessDay and Other Financial Institutions’(BAFI) Awards 2023.

The bank was presented the award at a prestigious dinner event held on Saturday, 28 October 2023 at Lagos Continental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.

“The BAFI Awards is the benchmark of distinction for institutions in the Nigerian financial services sector. Now in its 10th year, the awards recognises and celebrates organisations that excel in the delivery of financial services in Nigeria,” read a statement by BusinessDay Media Limited, the award organisers.

Commenting on the award, MD/CEO Fidelity Bank Plc, Mrs. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe said, “We are grateful for this recognition and dedicate the award to our customers who rely on us to provide the right support for operating effectively in the global non-oil exports market space. As a bank, we remain committed to our goal of helping individuals grow, inspiring businesses to thrive and empowering economies to prosper.”

It would be recalled that the bank recently hosted the second edition of its non-oil exports expo tagged the Fidelity International Trade and Creative Connect (FITCC) in Houston, Texas, United States of America. At the two-day event, the bank signed a cocoa pre-export deal with AFREXIM Bank and JohnVents Industries worth $40million dollars which has been adjudged as a landmark development by analysts in the exports space.

FITCC Houston also featured exhibitions by more than 160 Nigeria and US-based businesses as well as panel sessions as stakeholders engaged on strategies to increase the pipeline of Nigerian businesses that export into the US market. In recognition of the bank’s commitment to fostering bilateral trade and economic development between Nigeria and the USA through its FITCC initiative, the Mayor of the City of Houston, Sylvester Turner, proclaimed October 25, 2023 as FITCC Day in Houston Texas.

Ranked as one of the best banks in Nigeria, Fidelity Bank is a full-fledged customer commercial bank with over 8 million customers serviced across its 251 business offices in Nigeria and the United Kingdom as well as on digital banking channels.

The bank has won multiple local and international awards including the Best Payment Solution Provider Nigeria 2023 and Best SME Bank Nigeria 2022 by the Global Banking and Finance Awards; Best Bank for SMEs in Nigeria by the Euromoney Awards for Excellence 2023; and Best Domestic Private Bank in Nigeria by the Euromoney Global Private Banking Awards 2023.

BREAKING: Governor Fubara suspends N195bn ring road project in Rivers state initiated by Wike

by Folarin Kehinde October 31, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers state has suspended the Port Harcourt N195 billion Ring Road project, which former Governor Nyesom Wike initiated.

This decision comes as the power struggle between Fubara and Wike intensifies for political control in the state.

The sudden suspension of the high-value infrastructure project underscores the growing tension between Fubara and his predecessor.

Governor Fubara’s action is seen as a precursor to a potential showdown against Wike soon. Already, Fubara has taken decisive steps by dismissing some of Wike’s loyalists from his government. The move comes in response to attempts made by lawmakers in the state House of Assembly, who are loyal to Wike, to impeach Governor Fubara.

The political conflict between Fubara and Wike has been exacerbated by claims that, despite holding the position of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Wike has remained influential and in control of affairs in Rivers state.

The suspension of the multi-billion naira project and the political manoeuvring suggest an imminent confrontation between the two political heavyweights, potentially reshaping the dynamics of power and governance in Rivers state.

‘Call Wike to order’ – Edwin Clark tells Tinubu over Rivers Assembly crisis

by Folarin Kehinde October 30, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Elder statesmen and national leader of the South-South, Edwin Clark, has urged President Bola Tinubu to urgently call FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, to order over crisis in Rivers State.

Clark made the call at his Abuja residence on Monday, October 30, alleging that the FCT Minister plotted to remove the Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara, from office.

He described the crisis in Rivers State as sad episode allegedly orchestrated by Wike.

The South-South leader also wants the President to call to order all the security agencies being used against the current Governor Sim Fubara.

He said the Governor was threatened by security operatives during his visit to the State House of Assembly complex on Monday following an explosion on Sunday night that set the chambers ablaze.

The First Republic Minister said if allowed to degenerate into the dark past and the Niger-Delta region by extension, the crisis will distabilise the country’s economy.

BREAKING: UK court adjourns Diezani’s case to 2025

by Folarin Kehinde October 30, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Westminster Magistrates Court in the United Kingdom (UK) has adjourned hearing on the suit involving former minister of petroleum resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, to November 2025.

Alison-Madueke has been on trial over an alleged £100,000 bribe.

Leading reporters gathered that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is also seeking Diezani’s repatriation to Nigeria over alleged corrupt dealings during her time as minister.

Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), Nigeria’s Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, has submitted a warrant of arrest and request to the Crown Prosecution Services of the United Kingdom for the immediate extradition of a former Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Allison-Madueke.

The request, made on the orders of President Bola Tinubu, followed a written official request by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to the office of the AGF earlier in October.

A top Federal Government source said that in making the extradition request, the office of the AGF cited Section 2 (2) of Nigeria’s Extradition Act, CAP E25, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, and the London Scheme of Extradition within the Commonwealth otherwise known as “The Scheme,” a multilateral treaty which governs extradition between the United Kingdom and Nigeria.

BREAKING: Nigeria Bigger Loser, not Me – Atiku Declares

by Folarin Kehinde October 30, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said that Nigeria is the bigger loser of the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the election of President Bola Tinubu.

In a press conference on Monday, Atiku said that the court’s decision implies that “crime is good and should be rewarded.”

“If the Supreme Court says that it is okay for the president to forge his certificates, then what does that say about the future of our country?” Atiku asked.

“If the president can get away with this, then what other crimes will he commit?”

Atiku also criticised the Supreme Court for refusing to consider the academic records of President Tinubu, which Atiku had sought to tender as fresh evidence.

“The Supreme Court’s decision to refuse to consider the evidence is a travesty of justice,” Atiku said.

“It shows that the court is more interested in protecting the president than in upholding the law.”

Atiku’s comments come after the Supreme Court on Friday dismissed his appeal challenging the results of the February presidential election.
