ASUU To Appeal ‘Back To Work’ Court Order

by Folarin Kehinde September 22, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The  Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) says it will appeal a court ruling which directed the union to call off its nationwide strike.

Delivering a ruling on Wednesday, Polycarp Hamman, the judge, granted the federal government’s application for an interlocutory injunction to restrain ASUU from continuing with the strike.

The judge ordered members of the union to resume work pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.

He held that the strike is detrimental to public university students who cannot afford to attend private tertiary institutions.

In a terse statement sent to members of the union on Wednesday by the Chairman of Lagos Zone of ASUU, Adelaja Odukoya, the union urged its members to “remain calm.”

Counsel to ASUU, Femi Falana, said the ruling will be challenged at the court of appeal.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has criticised the ruling, describing it as a betrayal of equity.

Giwa Temitope, NANS national public relations officer, said the court’s decision does not offer a permanent solution to the dispute and that lecturers cannot be forced to resume their duties.

Akeredolu Lambasts FG Over Kastina Security, Says Amotekun Will Bear Arms Soon

by Folarin Kehinde September 22, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has called out the federal Government over their double standards towards state security outfits in the Nation.

A video surfaced showing the Kastina security outfit openly obtaining Ak47 arms, while the Western Security Network was denied the right to bear arms by the federal government.

Akeredolu condemned this approach stating that denying Amotekun the rights to legitimately bear arms is a repudiation of the basis of true federalism which we have been clamoring for.

“That Katsina was able to arm its state security force, with the display of AK47 means we are pursuing one country, two systems solution to the national question.

“If the Katsina situation conferring advantages on some, in the face of commonly faced existential threats, it means that our unitary policing system, which has failed, is a deliberate method of subjugation which must be challenged.”

Governor Akeredolu said Nigeria’s independence agreement was based on a democratic arrangement to have a federal state and devolved internal security mechanics. We must go back to that agreement.

According to the Akeredolu, the southwest is facing life threatening security challenges, hence it is a necessity for them to protect themselves.

In his words

“It is also a deliberate destruction of our agricultural sector. It is an existential threat. We want to reiterate, that what is sauce for the goose, is sauce for the gander.”

The statement announced that the Ondo government, under the doctrine of necessity, “have decided to fulfil its legal, constitutional and moral duty to the citizens of the State, by acquiring arms to protect them”.

“This is more so, given that the bandits have an unchecked access to sophisticated weapons. The State government cannot look on while its citizens are being terrorized and murdered with impunity. We will defend our people.”

Yesufu Slams Mahdi – North Christians Are Tired Of Being Used

by Folarin Kehinde September 22, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Popular and renowned Nigerian activist, Aisha Yesufu has responded to the viral video of Mahdi Shehu, calling it vile and disgusting.

Mahdi Shehu who is a Kastina activist, went to address Northern Christians and cautioned them never to vote for a candidate of Southern Extraction, most especially Peter Obi.

According to Shehu, northern Christians have no business voting for a southerner as the southerners don’t care about the north.

Shehu made claims that southern candidates don’t care about any Northern Christian. That they see anybody from the north as a northern and won’t hesitate to lynch them when they are breakdown of law and order.

He claimed that the agenda of Peter Obi is only for his tribe hence a vote for Peter obi is a vote for Biafra and the decimation of the north.

Aisha Yesufu in her own video, made a rebuttal and called the statements of Mahdi as shameful, distasteful and disgusting.

She tasked Northern Christians to looked at themselves and ask what they have benefitted from voting for northerners all this while.

According to her, Deborah Samuel, a northern Christian was murdered in Sokoto by fellow northerners. No Southerner was involved in her death.

“Where was Mahdi when Deborah was killed, did he condemn the act? Did he stand for Deborah?

Aisha expressed her disappointment that considering the insecurity and poverty faced by most people in the country, Shehu still had the audacity to play the ethno-religious card in the upcoming elections.

Where was Mahdi when people in the north were being killed in their homes, farms and place of worship. Was any southerner responsible for their demise?

She questioned Northern Christians to look at how the APC does not value them by selecting a muslim-muslim ticket in a diverse country like Nigeria.

When it was time to choose the vice-presidential ticket, many statements were flying around that the north cannot vote for a northern Christian, even as vice-president.

Now when they need your thumbprints, they remember that you are northern.

Aisha stated that the elites of the north do not care about northern Christians. She urged Northern Christians to disregard the statements of Mahdi Shehu and not to take the 2023 general elections as business as usual.

Flood Destroys Over 14,000 Farms In Kano

by Folarin Kehinde September 22, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Massive flood has destroyed about 14,496 farms in five local governments of Kano State.

This information was revealed by the Director General of the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA), Mustapha Habib, during an on-the-spot assessment tour of communities ravaged by flood in Warawa and Wudil LGAs of the state on Wednesday.

Few days ago the popular, Tiga dam overflowed its banks, and flooded Kiru, Kura, Bebeji Wudil Rano, Warawa and Dawakin Kudu local government areas, where thousands of farmlands were submerged.

The affected communities are Warawa Gishiri Wuya, where 1,113 farms were washed away, Larabar Gadon Sarki with 1,135 farms affected and Wudil, which had 4,808 farms destroyed as a result of the disaster.

Other affected areas include Bebeji, 1,405 farms; Rano, 260 farms; and Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area, 5,775 farms.

According to Mustapha, the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had directed that an assessment of the damage caused by the flood be conducted immediately.

The Director-General gave the assurance that the assessment report would be compiled and submitted to the ministry of humanitarian affairs, disaster management and social development for onward submission to President Buhari.

The executive secretary of Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Dr Saleh Jili, explained that the increase in farm flood was a result of the spillway of Tiga Dam.

While speaking on behalf of the victims, Malam Nasiru Qayya, appealed to the federal government to assist them and also repair the road from Ladin Makole to Larabar Gadon Sarki Warawa local government.

INEC Rejects APC New Results On AMAC Elections

by Folarin Kehinde September 21, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Independent National Electoral Commission has completely rejected the results tendered to the FCT election tribunal by the APC, in a case against Hon Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, the winner of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) election.

Responding to the trial Judge in response to the authenticity of the result the APC tendered at the lower tribunal, INEC Council Barrister Umar Alhassan, represented by Hassan Aminu, insisted that the People Democratic Party, PDP, candidate who polled 19,302 votes to defeat Murtala Karshi of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who scored 13,240 votes.

The electoral umpire therefore, reaffirmed that the document it tendered at the lower Tribunal is the true reflection of what occurred at the February 12, 2022 FCT Area Councils election that announced the candidate of the PDP as the authentic winner of the election.

Also, at the three man Appeal Panel led by the Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Suleiman Belgore, INEC Counsel informed the Tribunal members that the result presented by their lawyers at the lower which upturned the Zakka’s election subsides.

However, in a clear dislocation of justice, the lower Tribunal had early on Friday, allocated over 21,000 votes to PDP’s challenger, Mr. Murtala Karshi with the current AMAC Chairman Zakka still maintaining 19000 votes.

Just In: Court Orders ASUU To Call Off Strike

by Folarin Kehinde September 21, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The National Industrial Court has ordered the Academic Staff union of Universities (ASUU) to call off its seven months strike and return back to the classroom.

The order followed the granting of an injunction sought by the counsel to the federal government.

The federal government’s counsel, James Igwe, had applied for an interlocutory injunction to restrain ASUU from continuing with the strike pending the determination of the referral by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige.

In his ruling in Abuja on Wednesday, Justice Polycarp Hamman granted the government’s application.

He also dismissed the argument of Femi Falana, counsel to ASUU, that the interlocutory injunction should be dismissed and the court should instead grant an accelerated hearing for the referral earlier filed by Mr Ngige.

ASUU strike has been going on for over seven months as it commenced on the 14th of February, 2022. Negotiations between ASUU and the federal Government had been unsuccessful, prompting the Government to take the matter to the National Industrial Court.

Breaking: Governor Wike Camp Withdraws From Atiku Campaign

by Folarin Kehinde September 21, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and supporters loyal to him have pulled out of the Atiku campaign given that the parties national chairman, Iyoricha Ayu has refused to step down.

Wike’s camp said that they will not participate in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential campaign until Ayu resigns as party’s chairman.

The group made its position known after a long meeting which started at about 7pm last night and ended by past 2am this morning at the private residence of Wike in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

Some members of the group were recently appointed as leaders and members of the campaign council for the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Allies of Governor Wike are insisting that the National Chairman must resign and a person from southern extraction be chosen to fill the role before peace can reign.

Present at this defining gathering at Wike’s residence in Port Harcourt include  Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State; former Governors Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo, Ayo Fayose of Ekiti, Donald Duke of Cross River, Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe and Jonah Jang of Plateau, former Attorney General of the Federation, Mohammed Adoke.

Others at the meeting are elder statesmen, Olabode George, Jerry Gana; South-South Chairman of the PDP, Dan Orbih; former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chibudom Nwuche; Senator Suleiman Nazif, Nnenna Ukeje, among several others.

After over seven hours of private meeting from 7pm on Tuesday, September 20 to past 2am on Wednesday September 21, they gather to briefing journalists on the outcome, with George stating the shocker.

The PDP has been in turmoil since May when Atiku was elected as the standard bearer of the party.

Wike, whom many thought would be chosen as the party’s vice-presidential candidate, was ignored by Atiku who picked Ifeanyi Okowa, governor of Delta, as his running mate.

Allies of Governor Wike are insisting that the National Chairman must resign and a person from southern extraction be chosen to fill the role before peace can reign.

This decision may be disastrous for the PDP and its Presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar as campaign for the 2023 general elections are scheduled to begin on 28th of September, which is just a week away.

INEC Releases Final List Of 2023 Elections Candidates

by Folarin Kehinde September 21, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released its Final list of Presidential and National Assembly candidates for the 2023 general elections.

This is in line with Section 32(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 and item 8 of the timetable for the 2023 elections.

The list was released in a press conference signed by INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye.

According to the commission, 18 political parties’ field presidential candidates and their running mates, while for legislative elections, 1,101 candidates are vying for 109 Senatorial seats and 3,122 candidates for Federal Constituencies, that is, House of Representatives seats.

A total of 4,223 candidates are contesting 469 legislative positions.

The commission added that 3,875 of the candidates are male, made up of 35 for Presidential and Vice Presidential, 1,008 for Senate and 2,832 for House of Representatives, while 381 females, comprising one for Presidential, 92 for Senate, and 288 for House of Representatives are contesting the elections.

INEC also noted that there are 11 Persons with Disability in the race.

The released list for Akwa Ibom Federal Constituencies contains the name of the state’s ex-Governor, Godswill Akpabio, under the All Progressives Congress’ Senatorial candidate for Akwa Ibom North West.

The inclusion of Akpabio on INEC’s final list signals an end to the controversy surrounding his nomination by its party.

It is observed that the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, and his contender, Bashir Machina, miss out on the list as no senatorial candidate was listed for the APC in Yobe North.

The list for State elections would be published October 4.

Waste: Over 54 Billion Naira Spent On Local Refineries Without Results

by Folarin Kehinde September 20, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company limited (NNPCL), according to its August 2022 FAAC report, spent the sum of N54.663 billion on rehabilitating refineries in the country between January and July 2022.

The highest amount was spent in June, when the sum of N18.221 billion was spent on rehabilitating refineries.

Despite these investments in the health of refineries, Nigeria’s refineries have continued to suffer a mysterious ailment that has defied the billions spent on them. The refineries’ outputs remain low.

Warri refinery, Kaduna refinery and Port Harcourt refinery are some of the major refineries in the country. These three refineries have a combined capacity of producing over 400,000 Barrels per day but have failed to live up their capacity for years.

Nigeria still relies heavily on refined petroleum importation to meet its daily needs, and the failure to refine crude at home has left the country at the mercy of international market forces and allowed the ball and chain of subsidy to remain, gulping huge revenue that is not justifiable compared to the income of the sale of crude. Between 2015 and 2019, Nigeria spent a sum of $37.85 billion dollars on petroleum importation.

The NNPC announced in 2021, that it spent N100 billion to rehabilitate refineries although the refineries have yet to bridge the gap on refined petroleum products despite the investments

While the Nigerian government has defended its decision to rehabilitate refineries, experts have opined that spending money on rehabilitating refineries is not the right direction, rather the country should invest on new ones. The International Energy Agency (IEA), has also stated that the country will be better off investing in new refineries, stating that plans to rehabilitate the ailing refineries may not materialise.

Others have argued that the country should privatise the refineries to ensure investment in them and efficient running. The NNPCL appears to agree with this argument and have said they already have proposals from private entities for the management of the country’s refineries. However, the ailing refineries will only be handed over to private management after they have been restored to full health and are operational.

It is anybody’s guess when that will be because Nigeria’s investments in the health of its refineries has not led to any “healthy” outcomes.

In March 2021, the federal executive council approved the sum of $1.5 billion for Port Harcourt refinery upgrade. In August of the same year, $1.48 billion was approved for Warri and Kaduna refineries upgrade.

In March, 2021, a dollar averaged N378, meaning the sum approved for Port Harcourt refinery equaled N567 billion. In August, at an average dollar rate of N411, the amount equated to N608.28 billion. This is contrary to the NNPC’s claim of spending N100 billion on refinery rehabilitation in 2021.

Whatever amounts paid to resuscitate the refineries, ill health has persisted and they are not operational.

Between April 2020 to April 2021, the Warri, Kaduna and Port Harcourt refineries made operating losses of N91.856 billion. During this period, the refineries only received 8,266 Metric Tons of crude Oil. This was received in December, 2020 (3,949), January 2021 (3,851), February (466). In other months, the refineries received zero crude oil inputs.

It appears as if the country does not believe in the resuscitation of its “ailing” refineries nor in its capacity to meet local demands as the hopes for increased local production appears to rest on the privately owned Dangote refinery with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day.

The Federal government, through the newly rebranded NNPCL acquired a 20% stake in the refinery and according to the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, Mele Kyari, they are very proud of this acquisition.

The excitement notwithstanding, NNPCL has said ailing and new refineries combined will still not meet local demands, which means subsidy will likely remain “a thing around Nigeria’s neck” for a while longer.
